We are pleased to announce the next 6IG meet; the theme of this meet is "Mobility & IPv6".
Theme - Mobility & IPv6
Venue - Hotel Nahar Heritage, Senate Hall, 4th Floor, No.14, St. Marks Road, Bangalore 560 001. Tel:2278731-36
Date - Friday, 16th May 2002
Time - 5:30 PM to 8 PM
Agenda under consideration is.
Welcome Address
Mobility in IPv6 : Motivation, Features and Challenges - Sabarinath VN, Technical Lead (Telecom & Media), IBM Global Services
Abstract:
This presentation begins by examining the evolution of mobile data communication leading upto Mobile IP. Features of mobility in IPv6 are outlined and advantages over IPv4 established. Challenges upon Mobile IPv6 including key security concerns are examined. An emerging idea to handle possible frequent unreachability inside Wi-Fi networks is presented. The presentation is then summarised and conclusions drawn.
Mobility support in IPv6 with Demonstration - Mr. Anil Bhaskarwar - Wipro Technologies
Abstract:
Demonstration of the mobility factor of mobile IPv4. How? The Demo will show the charts and necessary thing along with the real demo. Further explaining the issues in Mobile IPv4 and how it is being resolved in Mobile IPv6. The focus will be more on mobility support in IPv6.
Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 mobility management - RFC Discussion - Mr. Praveen Rajendran, Samsung India.
Abstract:
HMIPv6 introduces extensions to Mobile IPv6 and IPv6 Neighbour Discovery to allow for local mobility handling. Hierarchical mobility management for Mobile IPv6 reduces the amount of signalling between the Mobile Node, its Correspondent Nodes and its Home Agent. The Mobility Anchor Point described in this document can also be used to improve the performance of Mobile IPv6 in terms of handoff speed.
Registration is Free for the meet, however the number of participants is restricted, so it will be on early register and confirmation basis. Please send in your confirmation for participation by e-mail to me, with the subject line, "Confirmation for 6IG meet - Theme - Mobility & IPv6"

Dear friends,
I´m trying to make a lab, with 2 lans and a router between then, just using
ipv6 address.
Just one information.
In Ipv4 we have some reserved address like:
10.0.0.0/8
172.16.0.0/19
192.168.0.0/16
In IPv6, what is the range for LAN address....??? if it exists....

fe80 = link-local prefix
192.168.20.137 = my IPv4 (im behind a NAT)
5efe = what is this??
I understand that this address is supposed to be an
IPv4-compatible address..correct me please..help

Theme - Security & IPv6
Venue - Infosys Technologies, Electronics City
Date - Friday, 20th December 2002
Time - 5PM to 7PM
It was a wonderful feeling to be at the Most admired company - Infosys, it was a treat just to be there and the 6IG meet was the Icing. the IPv6 focus group @ Infy were great hosts, As we had the snacks(wonderful samosas) people started trickling in and what a crowd ! !, the strength surpassed all other meets in both strength and participation.
Mr. Deependra Moitra, General Manager-Research, Infosys
He welcomed the gathering and explained about the demands in the networks of networks society, where we live in a Technology enabled life, This has put in an increasing demand on internet, for reliablity/availablity/capacity/feasiblity/accessiblity/security issues and as of now the Internet working engine is designed for "X" and we are making a heavy overload, and the market in the infrastructure and security arena and what was expected out of new technology, he also spoke in depth about the market requirements and how technologists need to make a difference by understanding the requirements end to end, and also the committment of Infosys both towards the IPv6 interest group/Forum and also ushering this technology in India fully. he said he was very happy to be part of the initative.
Enhance Security with IPv6, Mr. S. Mallik Prasad, Celstream Technologies.
We started out analyzing the requirements of Applications/Services of todays world, the requirement to establish the origin of any data request, which could be hampered by Spoofing or session replays, and also the essential "data privacy at the network layer", Data integrity as of now "User authentication is Available" but no way we could "Authenticate the Host" but these type of security service is not available in todays internet which is based upon the "fundamental foundation of trust". the only thing which is available to todays internet as a retrofit is " IPSec". The post IPSec era has made a lot of Secure Tunneled traffic across the internet "VPN's" with a less integration into the enterprise environment and applications cannot demand IPSec services. We discussed the Anycast, Unicast, Multicast features of IPv6 and the positives of having no Broadcasts, compared IPv6 and SSL, which was like comparing Apple with an Orange and we explored the features which made it different. We explored the Security features of IPv6 how IPSec is mandated in IPv6, The Authentication Header and Encapsulation Security Payload. We explored the impact on applications, Firewall scenarios, ways of exchanging the public keys.
PKI Overview with RFC Update - Mr. Madhur Nanda, Infosys Technologies
Discussed Industry Information Security requirements, and the requirements of a inherently strong protocol Why Ipv6? Discussed in detail about IPSec with Authentication Header(AH) and Encapsulation Security Payload(ESP). Explored how IPSec is implemented in Ipv4 and Ipv6 with a detailed Comparison of security features provided in IPv4 and IPv6 PKI Overview. Discussed a case study: PKI and IPSec based Remote Access Connectivity what was the requirement of the customer, how did the technical team weigh the consequences and delivered it to the customer. Discussed issues with NAT and tunnelling protocols with a demo. How the Fragmentation issues can bother the network and how PMTU feature in IPv6 can handle it.RFC 1981 (with demo)
Demo - Comparison of IPSec in IPv6 and IPv4 - Mr. Anil Bhaskar, Wipro Technologies
The demo on "Comparison of IPSec between IPv4 and IPv6" showed how IPSec in IPv6 is better than IPSec in IPv4.He explained and demonstrated following points:
IPSec is add on and optional in IPv4 which causes interoperability problem between different vendors product, where as IPSec is standard in IPv6 so every vendor has to include IPSec in their product.
He showed using one demonstration how NAT and IPSec can not go together. He also explained disadvantages of NAT.
The final point which was made and showed in the demonstration is how tunnel ESP and AH in IPv4 causes overload on the server and how in IPv6, it can be removed.
In the demonstration, the following were demonstrated:
How NAT server swaps source and destination IP address, as well as source and destination port number, unfortunately which is not allowed in AH and ESP IPSec.One packet with 1518 bytes (Ethernet Max Transfer Unit) was sent to the VPN server enabled with tunneled ESP, which after encapsulating has to go for fragmentation and End Tunnel server has to reassemble, decrypt the packet, which causes overload on the server. The same can be avoided using Path MTU Discovery Mechanism, which is optional in IPv4 and standard in IPv6.
This will be available on the web in a shortwhile alongwith presentation.

Hi
Freenet6 also provides an address on the 6bone, given by
anonymous-ip-address.servername.freenet6.net (valid for 5 days from last
use)
or
authenticatedusername.servername.freenet6.net (3 month validity)
Thus, if anybody on this list manages to get on the 6bone (or already is),
please visit
http://manusbhardwaj.tsps1.freenet6.net/
and tell me what you see. Thank you.
Manu
PS: Corrigendum - In my previous email, the line
# s iptables ....
can be considered
# sudo iptables .....
That is, s==sudo. Also, the config file defaults to
/usr/local/tsp/bin/tspc.conf, and not to /usr/local/tspc.conf as I mentioned in
one place.

Hi
I managed to get on the v6 internet this morning, and this is the method
I used to get there: my mini-howto titled
SUCCESS!, or How To Connect To The InternetV6 From Behind A Static NAT
Using FreeNet6 Tools
Prologue
I connect to the Internet via a NAT. I have a private static IP address
(say 172.16.10.20), my gateway is (eg) 172.16.0.1 locally, and the gateway's
globally static IP address is (say) 200.1.100.2.
I use galeon and connect to www.kame.net . I see a turtle that isn't
moving :-( (ie IPv4).
1
I first made my own kernel. I couldn't get make xconfig to work for the
latest beta kernel at the time (2.5.53) (Reason: xconfig relies on QT in
2.5.x!) , so I used the latest stable (2.4.20) instead.
2
To enable IPv6, I had to say yes to the first option in Code Maturity
Level Options. The IPv6 protocol comes under the subheading "Networking
Options". I also had to choose a driver for my network card under
"Network Device Support".
3
In a few minutes, I had a new kernel image installed - let me take this
opportunity to plug for Debian GNU/Linux - it's make-kpkg option is
fantastic - a new kernel needed just three lines
# make xconfig
# make-kpkg kernel_image --revision=xxx
# dpkg -i ../linux-2.4.20xxx.deb
4
Booting into the new kernel, I used the command
#ifconfig | grep inet6
to get the output as automagically assigned IPv6 addresses
inet6 addr: fe80::200:21ff:feaa:bbcc/10 Scope:Link [eth0]
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host [lo]
You will notice that the inet6 address my eth0 has been assigned is a
mangled 64-bit version of my 48-bit MAC address (00:00:21:AA:BB:CC).
This has been done using an IETF specification for conversion of 48- to
64-bit MAC addresses, and then appending it to an fe80:: prefix.
5
I next proceeded to download the freenet6 Linux source, available at
http://www.freenet6.net/cgi-bin/download.cgi?fn=freenet6-0.9.7.tgz
which was followed by a command
$ tar -zxvf freenet6-0.9.7.tgz
The README file included asked me to run the lines
# make all target=linux
# make install target=linux installdir=$INSTALLDIR
I warn you that this may overwrite your /etc/radvd.conf - make a backup
of it first.
I recommend $INSTALLDIR==/usr/local/tsp as the default tspc.conf that
comes with the source, has that as default (i.e. the line
tsp_dir=/usr/local/tsp). In any case, I will assume it to be true for now.
I now had the freenet6 package ready. (Note: Debian users are advised
that after an apt-get install freenet6, you may have to manually write your
radvd.conf. In my case, I still don't have a radvd.conf on my box.)
6
On recommendation from freenet6.net, I then visited this site:
http://www.daemonnews.org/200009/ipv6.html
It is an old page that talks about connecting to Freenet6 from behind a
NAT (exactly my situation), and refers to a very old freenet6 package
and old IPFilter rules.
The new freenet6 kit contains a configuration file
(/usr/local/tsp/bin/tspc.conf) and an executable (/usr/local/tsp/bin/tspc).
7
In short, the page told me to
a. Modify /usr/local/tspc.conf, specifically change the lines
username=xxxxx
passwd=yyyyy
(both values can be received from freenet6.net by filling a form there;
you can also do anonymous logins (default)),
and the line
client_v4=zzzzz
NOTE: zzzzz is NOT 172.16.10.20 (see Prologue), it is to be set as
200.1.100.2 (your gateway's public IP).
8
Now run
# /usr/local/tsp/bin/tspc -vf /usr/local/tsp/bin/tspc.conf
You will get the output
"

--- End of configuration script. ---

Exiting with return code : 0 (0 = no error)
"
if everything goes well. Note that the command
# ifconfig
now suddenly shows you a THIRD device, namely sit1 (the v4 tunnel for
your v6 packets).
9
And that's it!
The rest of the steps are very easy. Here is the general idea:
eth0 has the v6 address fe80::200:21ff:feaa:bbcc
sit1 is the tunnel connecting you to the glorious v6 Internet. The
tunnel has the (permanently static! globally accessible! free!) address
3ffe:abcd:0001:dcba:0000:0000:0000:0002
Now all you have to do is route all outgoing packets from lo/eth0 to
sit1, and all incoming packets from sit1 to lo/eth0.
I used the tool ip6tables (a v6 version of iptables) to do this.
Remember to enable iptables while making your kernel.
This is done with the commands
# s ip6tables -t filter -I OUTPUT -s fe80::200:21ff:feaa:bbcc -d
# 3ffe:abcd:1:dcba::2
(for outgoing packets)
and
# s ip6tables -t filter -I INPUT -d fe80::200:21ff:feaa:bbcc -s
# 3ffe:abcd:1:dcba::2
(for incoming packets)
10
Now is the fun part.
I ping6 www.kame.net.
I access www.kame.net on galeon. Dancing turtle! (IPv6!)
And that's it.
Note: A simple sequel for dialup users. I don't know if you are assigned
globally static IP addresses during the course of you dialing up. If
so, things become much simpler - no ip6tables is involved.... I think.
If not, you just have to find your gateway's IP address out, and use
your local IP as the equivalent of 172.16.10.20, and do the whole
process above. By my reckoning, it should work.
Try it out, and correct me if I am wrong.
Cheers
HTH

Hi all,
Last few days of research with my dial up internet
connection has got me confused like crzy.Now , Ill
just run thro' to my current state:
1) I edited /etc/sysconfig/ifup-ppp and set some
parameters and got 6to4 configured.
2) then ... #/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart
#/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart
I got a message saying "starting xinetd-ipv6 [OK]"
3) accessed http://ipv6.research.microsoft.com
4) Tried pining that host .. host not reachable.
So what does this mean.I can access a IPv6 page via
browser but cant ping6 it ?? Or is
http://ipv6.research.microsoft.com also a ipv4 server
?? Can someone confirm me that ?
regards
prady - confused.

Ya thats precisley my point .. Does it mean that I
cant ping any IPv6 host without a global IPv6 address
?

Lucky you, do I envy you or what.Now the only drawback
that a I face is that I dont haev a netowrk with a
static IPv4 address.. :-( , else it would have been
great fun working and R&Ding on IPv6.
Once I have that ... yeah !! Woudld be cool.

If you are able to ping6 to your machine, means your kernel is configured
for ipv6. And also or ipv4, means DUAL stack. That what we want here.
But I dont find any global v6 address, in the output you have paseted
here. If you dont have global v6 address, you can get it from
freenet6.net, 6bone.net. I suggest you should go for freenet6.net, its
very easy to get v6 global address from there.
The only thing you need is one public ipv4 address, to creat the other
point of tunnel. After creating tunnel, that tunnel is access by sit0,
sit1 interfaces. sit stands for simple interface tunnel.
If you are going to get public v6 address for router, you need to
configure and setup RADVD in your network. RADVD is routing adv deamon.
When I was student at PESIT, I've done all those things. works well. I
really enjoyed v6 stuff.

IPv6 sites" but cant ping them .It takes a long time
and then reports "Host Unreachable".
<ifconfig>
[root@gallahad root]# ifconfig
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:192.168.0.1 Mask:255.255.255.0

</ifconfig>
