Re: [stv-voting] Re: BC-STV referendum 12 May 2009

Thankyou Dave R.

Ive had a look at your trial elections. Very nicely set-up, which is
important. Clean lines, not cluttered.
I looked at the map then moved to the area including Burnaby. I was foiled
in taking my revenge on the local Burnaby Now on-line paper that wouldnt
print my letter responding to a defamer of the BC Citizens Assembly, because
they give priority to local letters. Yet there was no other reply for
several weeks.
I thought, well, I'll vote in this Burnaby shadow election as a sort of
pseudo-citizen. I saw straight away that I wouldnt vote for Adriane Carr,
after, electoral reform-wise, she cut her nose to spite her face. But living
on the other side of the globe I didnt know any of the other candidates
personally. What matters more from your point of view, I think, is that
British Columbians may not want to anticipate their own decisions, in this
way.

Anyway, I went to the animal elections and voted in one, actually. But my
feeling is that you should have left out instant run-off voting. Thge count,
tho not the vote, is quite different from STV, as you know, but the voters
mostly wont. IRV examples will only confuse people.
My recommendation is, for the purposes of the coming referendum, stick to
STV mock elections. I think it would be helpful if you had some STV animal
elections. This would focus on how the system works, without worrying the
voters unduly about whether they are making the best ranked choice, as they
might when considering actual candidates who have stood or will be standing
in the provincial elections.

In attempt to counter the forces of evil as described by Richard Lung, I
have worked with a few BC people to prepare:

I would like to invite readers of this list to try it. We need to get the
ballot boxes stuffed to the point that meaningful results are available, and
could use some feedback regarding the user experience. We will be
populating the candidate list to provide a full STV shadow election as their
names become available.
