Hi all,
at the meeting on Wednesday, we set dates for a couple more things:
Thursday 11th April (First thursday back after the break). We're having an
AGM/Social Night. We'll head to a pub (possibly starting off at Manning or
the Stand), and have a bit of a meeting, and elect everyone (ie You! - if
you want) into the committee, all whilst providing everyone who comes with
a FREE beer!!! (or alternative drink...) From there, we'll see if we can
match our stellar effort in the trivia at the last social night, and win
thousands of prizes for the canoe club..or nothing, one of the two. And
there is talk of stealing Dave's new paddling video, and holding Manning
Bar staff to ransom until they play it on the huge screen in the Bar. so
i'm sure it will all work out in the end...maybe...
But we'll send out more details later - for now, make sure you keep the
night free!
4-5 May Ok, we stuffed up the first one, but this time we're going to bribe
Huey with all the prizes that we'll win at the above trivia night to send
down rain for the next 4 weeks in the catchment of all paddable rivers. And
then we might just have enough water for another Beginner's Whitewater
Trip!! Garth is going to head up this one, but for the moment, stay tuned,
and keep the weekend free.
And in all the weekends between, we'll see how the water levels are, and
maybe do some drop of the hat trips.
And (again) - if you still have no plans for easter, you have till 8:30am
tomorrow morning, to get into gear, and get to HK Ward for the Easter
Whitewater Trip.
cheers,
richard
Hi all,
unfortunately we couldn't borrow the sports union ute for the weekend, and
we are currently short of a decent car to pull the trailer up the
hills...thus can everyone go home tonight and plead with their
parents/friends/relatives to borrow any kind of car that is possibly
capable of pulling a trailer of boats for a 'short' trip up the coast.
even if you can't get a car that can pull a trailer, still see if you can
borrow a car, cause we might need all of them that we can get...
cheers,
richard

God said let their be rain... and there was rain (sorry for any biblical
inaccuracies)
WE ARE GOING WHITEWATER THIS WEEKEND :)
I have just got off the phone from the guy at goolang creek. It is pissing
it down there. Goolang is expecting water coming down the river shortly and
all the near by rivers have water in them... We're ON
The drive up will be tomorrow (friday) morning, 8:30am at the container
(behind HK ward gym).
Its a bit hard to organise transport, I think we should be right tho. If
you have a car bring it, if you have paddling gear bring it, if you have

I have just got off the phone from the people at goolang creek... They are
waiting for it to rain... but they like their chances the final decision
will made early tomorrow...

"stop playing scrabble arthur it won't save the human race"
dcoote@...
I probably shouldn't write off yahoogroups... it evidently does work and
I am just an idiot
here is what I wrote earlier... sorry to clog up inboxes
Alrighty... The final decision will be made tomorrow on what
option we take
here is a list of the options.
Please if you are on campus come to the meeting at 1pm on the sunken lawn
(near
manning) with any questions. And to help finalise transport arrangements
The options:
1) Goolang creek beginner/intermediate whitewater trip. Its about a 9
hour
drive so go on the theory of leave early friday (8am at the container) To
return monday afternoon (which will probably turn into tuesday morning)
2) Flatwater trip to Kangaroo valley. This doesn't have the same
excitement as
a whitewater trip but is still a good weekend. Its a bit like doing a
bush walk
with canoes, the scenery is nice and the social aspect (which is half the
fun)
of a camping trip away from sydney is still there. This isn't such a long
drive
so the plan is to leave sydney (either boatshed or container) on thursday
evening at about 6:30 and return saturday night
3) A whitewater trip somewhere else. Both this option and number 1) are
very
weather dependent. So chances are if it doesn't rain enough to go to
goolang it
won't rain enough to go anywhere else... but I will check river levels.
What is required for these trips is pretty much the same.
Camping gear
any paddling gear you own
anything else you would take on a camping weekend (frisbee, soccer
ball... a
case)
PS it is very hard to buy beer on good friday... I have tried before.
So if you are interested and haven't already told me reply and tell me.
And I
think we still need people who have cars... so if you have a car can you
tell
me that too.
Final decision will be made tomorrow dependant on rain... I have phoned
goolang creek but am waiting on a reply
if we go Whitewater trip meet 8:30ish at the container on friday morning to
return monday night
if we go flatwater meet 7pm at the container on thursday to retun sat.
Anyone who hasn't given a reply who is still keen its not too late, I also
need to know about cars ie who has them..
Anyone on campus please turn up to meeting wednesday 1pm sunken lawn.
I swear I wrote a more detailed version of this earlier today...
yahoogroups sucks arse.
------------------------------------------------------------------
"stop playing scrabble arthur it won't save the human race"
dcoote@...
1) it rains and we go to goolang creek (see previous emails)
beginner/intermediate whitewater
2) the backup plan. Flatwater trip this is if 1) doesn't happen. The idea
is to pile in cars and go down to Kangaroo valley or other location. It
is flatwater, but hell its a trip...
So as with other trips if you are interested reply with
Name:
Experience/ability if any: (eg absolutely nothing!, flatwater day,
paddled a little/lots of whitewater before, paddled some/lots of
flatwater before, polo) Transport: (if you have a car, and how many people it can take, if
it has a towball, or if you need a ride + when you want to leave Camping Gear: (if you need to borrow a tent, or if you have a
spare spot in your tent, or extra gear - especially sleeping mats) Prefered option: will you come on the non prefered option. (ie
have you anything against flatwater)
I am forwarding a message from Ash regarding training at Lane Cove Pool.
I hope that the keen paddlers amongst you will be able to attend this Sunday at 7pm. If you are thinking of coming it might be an idea to drop me a line so I can organise enough gear.
Thanks,
Cass

Howdy All,
There will be no Thursday night or Sunday night polo training at Lane Cove
over the Easter weekend.
There is still Sunday night training for C grade and beginners starting at
7pm this Sunday (24th) and it will recommence on Sunday the 7th of April.
The next Thursday night training for A/B grade players will recommence on
Thursday 11th April.
Good luck to all those people competing at the Interstate Championships over
Easter.
cheers,
ash.

Dear all,
This is a bit of variation to getting multiple emails from Dave. His email
has temporarily died so he has asked me to do the honours.
The plan for tonight is to meet at 6pm on the balcony on the bar level (3)
at Manning.
There is happy hour from 5pm - 6pm so if you are early at least you can be
happy.
This is followed by trivia for an hour. This is serious training for the
canoe club's resurgence as trivia champions at the next canoeing IV trivia
night!
After that we can head over to the North Indian Diner in Newtown (or
elsewhere if there are better suggestions) for a feed. And leave the rest
to fate.
See you there,
Celia.

Hi all,
for those who get this email this morning,
just a reminder we have regular wednesday lunchtime meetings (1pm Sunken
Lawn) to discuss what's going on, and dream up trip ideas. so bring your lunch.
we'll also start organising the easter whitewater trip (it has to rain by
then!), and work out the social night (tomorrow night?), and AGM/social
night (possibly monday, or after the break).
cheers,
richard
Did i read in a previous message
that March 21 is the sucanoe social night, or was i just imagining
it??
Ok, I
think I did mention this, but have since completely forgotten to
organise anything at all. So if anyone has any brilliant ideas post them
to the list and we might do that. If not how 'bout meet at manning at
about 6 ish then move on from there... so bring 1) inspiration, 2)
beer money... and a 3) desire to go paddling on all the fountains round
sydney (if you feel the need, ignore 3)

Well, did
I mention a raindance? I have phoned the people at goolang
creek, there is no water running at the moment. They are waiting on
rain.
So stay tuned for more updates... I will call them again next week. The first
trip will run as soon as it rains pretty much anywhere, so it
might be kind of spontaneous.

After a
slow start to the year (everyone do a rain dance NOW) we should be able
to get a trip happening in Easter.
It isn't
actually that far away, Good friday is the 29th of March. The current
plan (and I can't see any reason it would) is to go to Goolang creek this
is near grafton, probably 8-9 hours driving.
Goolang
creek is dam controlled so it WILL be running (actually I will phone and
check this week). It is a fairly short section of river with lots of
rapids of varying levels. It is a good place to learn (I did my first
ever trip there, (am I over using brackets today or what)) as there are
some very easy sections, and if you feel confident you can attempt the
slightly harder stuff (I also got munched). It is also good if you an
intermediate paddler, there are lots of play spots and waves. There is a
possibility there may be a rodeo competition that weekend, which may in
turn lead to demo boats being around for people to try out (don't quote
me)
The
current plan is drive up early friday (29) paddle sat, sun, mon and drive
back either monday (2 April) evening or tuesday. The trip never moves so
if people want to join us later they can provided transport can be
arranged. So who is keen, and who has cars etc...
For those who are coming, please reply (again) to this email
(keeping the subject header) with: Name:

paddled a little/lots of whitewater before, paddled some/lots of

it has a towball, or if you need a ride + when you want to leave Camping Gear: (if you need to borrow a tent, or if you have a
spare spot in your tent, or extra gear - especially sleeping mats)
Summary, the trip is cancelled. If you were going please email myself and
richard to let us know you got this
rwood@...
extended rant. Damn
lack of rain. Basic deal is there is no water in the barrington or the
murrimbidgee. This left us with one other option, which is Childowlah,
which is damn controlled. I phoned the damn for details and they couldn't
tell me if they would be releasing or not... surprisingly unhelpful...
Which means we could have a 5 hour drive to stare at some rocks. The other
option for this weekend. As I don't like piking on trips I am figuring
another flatwater day/ bbq thing. So I am going to be at Manly dam on
Sunday. The plan is either be there at 11 or the container at 9:30ish
Bring meat, beer, bbq type stuff. Future
trips... We will organise another beginners trip as soon as it rains
somewhere useful. It also means that the intermediate trip for the
weekend after is cancelled. The easter
trip to goolang creek is still on... This is also a good place to learn.
So could become our first beginner trip for the year, again this is dam
controlled so I need to make a call... But I believe they are fairly
reliable.
Anyway if you were going on this trip don't forget to reply... otherwise
I shall have to phone 30 people
Hi everyone,
this is just to let people who couldn't make the meeting know what's going on.
Firstly, everyone needs to do a rain dance for Canberra, cause we need more
water!
We are meeting behind HK Ward at the shipping container at 6pm on Friday.
We will load all the boats and gear, and probably head off by 7pm.
Currently, the people driving down on Friday are: Eloise Cotton (+4
people), David Shoebridge (+3 people) Alex Edwards (+4people) The Ute (+2
people) and possibly Ben and Celia? (+2 people?), Mitch???. The people I
have down as going on Friday are the above plus: Brian Curry, Patricia
Tsang, Deidre, Nikki Graf, Saricha, Sara, Michael McCabe, Jeremy Carrol,
Todd Gately, Paul Miceli, Andrew Middleton, Lisa, Cara, Dave Coote. This
just scrapes in for the number of spare seats for transport, so if any
others have a car, it might come in handy.
On Saturday morning, we have Anton driving, from Glebe, picking up Erica,
me, Kathy and Daniel Cox from HK Ward at 5am, and Tip Lou a bit down the
road. If these people are able to make it to the container on Friday
evening with their gear to help load for a bit, and also to give their gear
to someone to take down, it would be handy, as there won't be much room in
the car on Saturday.
so that's transport...hopefully those arrangements are ok with everyone.
We are heading down the Hume Highway to Canberra area, to paddle the
Murrimbidgee (or however you spell it..), as long as there is enough
water...(quick do rain dance)
Currently there seems to be a massive shortage of tents and sleeping mats,
can everyone be as self sufficient as possible, and anyone who has extra
gear, please throw it in. It might be an idea to put in a blanket if you
don't have a mat. Also, please make sure you have some warm gear, and a
spray jacket. Vinnies is a good source of woolen jumpers which are perfect.
And, you have to be self sufficient with food. There will be an opportunity
to buy dinner on Friday night on the way down, and I hear cold pizza is
awesome for breakfast the next day. And make sure you have a waterproof
lunch ready for the two days, although I hear that cold wet pizza is
"awesome" for lunch the next day. On Saturday night, you may be able to
convince people to take you to the nearest town to stock up on pizza for
the next 24 hours, or bring food to cook around the campfire. There'll be
an opportunity to stock up on beers etc on the way too, if you so desire.
And by the way, we are NOT carrying gear, we are way too lazy, we are base
camping, and will be at the cars in the morning before paddling, and after
paddling.
Also, could people make sure they have reasonable change for petrol money
to distribute between the drivers. Its a long way, and hauling lots of
boats burns up the petrol, thus this might be an overestimate, but if you
can have up to $40-50 in smallish denominations (no this is not to buy
drugs - just makes it easier with change.)
I think that covers most of the questions people have asked.
If I have missed anyone in the list above, please reply asap. If you have a
car, it would be very handy...
ok, i think that's all the really fun logistics out of the way. now we just
have to get paddling...
richard
Hey everyone!
I am desperate to go on the camp, but i do not have any gear.....please help
me... if you have any spare stuff, ie....sleeping bags, tent , just about
everything, would you be so kind to lend it to me.....(for two
people....sari)
thanks, kind regards, your sincerely, cheerio,
sara

Hi everyone,
hope you're not too sick of all the emails yet! - but i guess it means
there's stuff going on!
Just trying to work out logistics for the weekend...
Currently the people who I have interested in the whitewater weekend are:
Murielle, Linda, Marcus, Megan, Sara, Tip, Deidre, Daniel C, Eloise C,
Ellen D, Dave W, Gabe H, Jonathan M, Brian C, Jeremy C, Andrew M, Kathy R
(plus Dave, Alex, myself, possibly Mitch) If I have missed anyone, or
others are interested, please let me know asap (wed lunch meeting at
latest). And it would be great to get one or two more experienced
people!! If we don't, we may have to limit numbers of beginners to
somewhere between 10-15.
For those who are coming, please reply (again) to this email (keeping the
subject header) with: Name:
Experience/ability if any: (eg absolutely nothing!, flatwater day,
paddled a little/lots of whitewater before, paddled some/lots of
flatwater before) Transport: (if you have a car, and how many people it can take, if
it has a towball, or if you need a ride + when you want to leave (6pm
Fri, or one car leaving 5am Saturday) Camping Gear: (if you need to borrow a tent, or if you have a
spare spot in your tent, or extra gear - especially sleeping
mats)
A reminder that you will have to supply your own food (and beer/wine if
so inclined :) and warm clothes for the weekend. It will probably be
possible to buy dinner on saturday night in town if you want to. You will
need warm clothes such as thermals, a wind jacket, woolen jumpers, as
well as shoes to wear in the river.
We will also be camping. You'll need your own sleeping bag/mat, but we
can source some tents if needed.
The only cost for the weekend is contribution to fuel costs and food (and
beer/wine:)
Should be an awesome weekend!!
hope everyone's getting psyched up for it!
And don't forget, meeting to work out everything will be WEDNESDAY LUNCH,
SUNKEN LAWN (just east of Manning) at 1pm!!!!!!!
Hope to see everyone there!
As the
whitewater weekend had to postponed by a week we decided to have a
flatwater day, less organisation required. The day kicked of in much the
same way as every trip loading up the trailer with boats from the
container, and as normal did not estimate enough time to do this leaving
us 20 minutes late or for our arrival to the boatshed in glebe. After
this things ran fairly smoothly. Those with paddling experience gave
those without lessons on going straight lines and turning, I also
learnt a new skill of deepwater rescues after a few spontaneous capsizes.
After a hour or so of practising we were psyched for a trek out to the
harbour. This is not the most senic of areas to come from, the paddle
from blackwattle bay takes you to the docking areas in glebe. And the
chop increases considerably. We did manage to get past this to an area
Bob tells me is used to film water rats, it also gives a nice view of the
bridge. By this time the increased traffic of other boats became a worry,
the venture out to the harbour proper might have to be done on another
day, we turned around and came back to the calm suroundings of
blackwattle bay. Before packing up and heading to the Rose for drinks.
After discussion at the pub we have come up with a brief
calender.
(15)/16/17 - Beginners weekend (barrington or murrimbidgee, a final
decision will be made wednesday)
This is a beginner trip the river will be of a fairly easy level. An
ideal way to get into whitewater paddling, you don't need to have come to
the flatwater day as there will be brief paddling instructions on the
first day. If you feel you are past beginner level it is also a good
social event, we will be camping over night and you can meet everyone
around a fire with beers in hand. There is still a need for more advanced
people so to you older members if you have a free weekend... We also need
transport so those who are coming along send richard an email if you have
access to a car or towball
Contact Richard for more details rwood@...
Easter Weekend (28) 29 Mar - 1, 2 April - Intermediate, beginner trip to
goolang creek
Goolang creek is up off north near coffs harbour. The river is short and
reasonably easy but has quite a few good play holes. That cater for most
levels, if you have never paddled before there are some very easy
sections you can practise on. Those with more experience can break off
and perfect their cartweels and surfing. Again this is open to everyone
it is less of a teaching weekend than the beginner trip, but no
experience is necessary. The social side is again important bring a
frisbee, soccer ball and a case as there will be time to fill that will
not be spent on the water.
Contact Dave (that would be me) dcoote@... 0403 797 018
That leaves a weekend in the middle with nothing happening, as I am the
kind of guy who is off paddling anyway I will leave that open for an
intermediate trip. If anyone who has done a reasonable amount of paddling
before is keen give me a call or an email, this has no organisation yet.
You don't have to be brilliant (hell I'm not) but good enough to get down
easier rapids without assistance.
We will also try to fit in a social night, so keep thursday the 21st
free.
Polo happens every week, so you can paddle in a pool every week on
tuesday or thursday, contact mitchell misa2181@... or cass
CCaldwell@...
DON'T FORGET MEETINGS EVERY WEDNESDAY LUNCH 1pm the snken lawn outside
manning
If you for any reason can't make any of these weekends but are keen for a
bit of boating action, then give myself, richard or garth,
greucassel@..., an email and we shall start the calender for the
second half of semester with more trips to your level.
Hi,
Canoe Polo games start at Birrong this week. Draws have not yet been
released so be there for a 7:15pm start. There looks to be a few beginners
coming for C grade, so if you want to give it a go come along. C grade is
played indoors and is quite warm so you don't really have to worry about
thermals etc.
Any questions or problems call me on 0416 199 899.
Cass
Just a reminder about next few days:
Saturday: There's a beginner flatwater day. Meet at back of HK Ward
gymnasium at 9:30am, or at the Glebe boatsheds at 10am ( Women's Rowing
Sheds at Glebe. (Bottom of Ferry rd - which goes off Glebe Pt Rd)) finish
about 2pm?. Just turn up. If you aren't a member, or have friends who
aren't, that's ok, we'll have membership forms there. Bring
thermals/windjacket if you can. No cost. And there's a request for a canoe
polo ball - if anyone has one kicking about, can they bring it? (for gear
purposes: there's been interest from ~15 beginners so far)
Sunday: Canoe polo practice/coaching day at Lane Cove pool. Free coaching
on the basics or not so basics of canoeing. Plus, if enough people can go,
we can have a practice match against Macquarie Uni - so it would be a good
way to find out what canoe polo is about. It would be really good if some
of the people who expressed interest in C grade went along. Contact is
Cass - 0416 199 899.
Tuesday: This is the first night of canoe polo for the season. So far, the
people who I have who are interested in playing C grade are Ben,K Melanie
B, Michael O, Erin T, Serge, me and possibly Erica or Anton or Saricha.
We'll meet at the back of HK Ward at 6:30pm (I might be a little late cause
I have a lecture then..). If the people above can confirm they can make it
on Tuesday, it'd be appreciated. If other people are interested, please let
me know. More info is available on the web at
http://www.physics.usyd.edu.au/~rwood/canoe/polo.html It is held at Birrong
Pool, about 20-30 mins west of Uni.
Think that's it!

Hello paddlers,
Every Sunday arvo at Lane Cove Pool there is polo training for any beginners
interested in canoe polo. It is run by top polo players who are there just
to help beginners. Everything from how to paddle correctly, to how to roll.
Therefore it's possibly good for those of you wanting to get involved in the
other canoeing disciplines as well.
As a bonus there are a group of Macquarie Uni beginners heading there this
weekend and are looking to play a game against anyone from Sydney Uni who
can make it. It won't be serious and the standard will be that of a
beginner, so how about giving it a go???
Anyone that is interested please reply to this e-mail. If you want more
information and want to come this weekend, please call me on
0416 199 899.

Hi everyone--
Sorry, but this email has nothing to do with the clubs. I was wondering if you
have heard of the HUGE party (rave) this weekend called Two Tribes?? If you
like Dance music at all, it is definitely a party you shouldn't miss!! I am
writing because I have an extra ticket. I just got to Sydney a couple weeks ago
and bought two tickets when I heard about Two Tribes, but unfortunately have not
found anyone to buy my extra ticket yet. It costs $85 but I think it is
definitely worth it!! These are just a few of the HUGE djs that will be there
from all over the world:
Mauro Picotto (Italy)
Fergie (UK)
Tiesto (Holland)
Seb Fontaine (UK)
Steve Lawler (UK)
Pete Heller (UK)
Goldie (UK)
MC Rag (UK)
Jeff Mills (US)
Storm (UK)
Let me know as soon as possible if you are interested!! Either reply to this
email (make sure you aren't replying to everyone!) or call me at 0421 967 484.
It is THIS Saturday, March 9 from 9pm-8am. See ya!

Hi all,
Welcome to the Canoe Club for 2002.
Ok this email might be long, but bare with me. Its in 4 sections:
1. How we/you get in contact.
2. Upcoming Trips
3. Canoe Polo
4. Note for experienced/older people
1. This email list is the easiest way to communicate to the group at large.
The address is sucanoe@yahoogroups.com
We also have weekly meetings about upcoming trips at the Sunken Lawn
(just east of Manning) on Wednesdays at 1pm,. starting this week! So
please, if you get this email this morning, come along.
We've got a web page now that has info about the club and upcoming
events, that we'll try and keep updated as much as possible:The current
address is http://www.physics.usyd.edu.au/~rwood/canoe, hopefully we'll get
it changed to something easier to remember like
http://www.usyd.edu.au/canoe soon...
2. We've got two trips planned in the next little while. We've had to
postpone the beginners trip one weekend, apologies for that. So the current
plan is:
This Saturday (9th), we'll do a beginner flat water day, where you can
learn the basic skills, out at the Penrith Whitewater Course. You can
practice on a rapid, and if you're a really fast learner (or know it all
already..) then you can go down the course. The flatwater part is free, the
course costs in the order of $20 for the day, plus transport costs. We plan
to meet out there at 11am, and if you are coming from near uni, we'll meet
at the back of HK Ward Gym at 9am to sort out gear and transport. If you
have transport, or need transport, let us know. Please let us know if you
intend on coming, so we can organise gear.
Next Weekend (16th-17th will be the beginners weekend, with a whole lot of
fun (but not too hard) rapids, plus a bit of camping in between. If you
are interested in going on the beginner weekend, please let us know (even
if you wrote your name on the list at o-week, please still reply to this
email). Most transport will leave Friday night, and return Sunday night,
there'll be at least one car heading up early Saturday morning.
3. Canoe Polo is starting next week. So far, we have teams entered in all
grades. B grade is Wednesday night, C grade is Tuesday night. Even if
you've never paddled before, canoe polo is great fun. If you'd like to
play, please get in touch. For those who have already expressed interest,
we'll organise transport soon (maybe let us know if you are coming from
near uni, and if you have a car)
There is more info about canoe polo at
http://www.physics.usyd.edu.au/~rwood/canoe/polo.html
4. If anyone has any gear, we might need it for the next couple of weeks,
so please let Garth know, or return it to the locker. If any experienced
people can help out on the trips, it would be much appreciated (and kind of
needed...).
I think that's it! if you have questions, you can email me reach me on 9351
3384 or rwood@..., or Garth on 0419 011 434.
Hope to see you on a trip or at the Wednesday meetings (1pm, Sunken Lawn)
Richard
Hi everyone, sorry to have to change things already,
the flatwater day this weekend is being changed to the Uni boatsheds at
Glebe. Meet at the boatsheds at 10am ( Women's Rowing Sheds at Glebe.
(Bottom of Ferry rd - which goes off Glebe Pt)), or at Uni (back of HK Ward
at 9:30am).
You'll need to bring something to get wet in, some warm clothes (that stay
warm when wet such as thermals or wool), maybe a bit of food, and that's
about it.
We'll have a bit of a paddle around, maybe go check out the harbour bridge.
Will finish early afternoon (~2pm?). Still please let me know if you intend
to come.
cheers,
Richard
