Hi all!
I think I have personally welcomed you all aboard, but if I have
overlooked some one, let me tell you that I consider this onelist
list to be community property. You are all invited to share your
business opportunities here, and your "experience, strength, and hope"
of being a woman in the computer business. Whether you are a
webmistress, an MLMer, or anyone trying to do business on the web, I'd
like to hear from you.. Introduce yourself to list, feel free to post
articles, opinions, struggles with obstacles, and exactly what you do in
the computer/internet field.
I have included a newsletter from another group at onelist, and found
the "mess article" one that I identify with.. The subscription info is
in the letter, if you'd like to subscribe.

Now then,
I'll introduce myself, and invite you all to do the same --
My name is Marlene Jones, and I have been exposed to the internet since
1993. I started out chatting on IRC and am still amazed how quickly, and
sometimes deeply, friendships and relationships in general happen via
the internet.
My business, Sunflower Creations, began in 1992, when I began selling
the handcrafted beaded jewelry that I make. It was an offline business,
and I JUST got my first web site in September of 1997.
I had been thinking of going online with my jewelry for about a year,
but although I am literate to a degree in computers and software, the
term HTML, had me thinking it was some computer programming language!!
And it took many months of searching before I found FreeYellow, and
their free web site giveaway program. They also have the "page wizard"
which makes it possible to make a web site without knowing HTML. This
wizard is the wizard found in Netscape communicator, and I am guessing
they lease that service from netscape.. Anyway, the URL of that site is
http://www.freeyellow.com/members/mandyky/ I also give away free
websites there, and there is a business opportunity that goes with doing
that. But anyone is welcome to get a free lifetime website, and not do
the business opportunity thing.
I have become what they refer to as a web site "junkie" and have many
pages for myself and some I have built for friends and clients. As a
result of promoting my own website, I explored a lot of marketing ideas,
and it landed me a Director's position at TronMalls. The URL to my
online office at Tron is http://www.tronmalls.com/consultants/mandyky/
and anyone who does web design, we are looking for consultants in
hometowns world wide.
In my brief but intense time as a webmistress I have found many
marketing programs to help promote web sites, and things you can add to
websites to make some extra money. I love sharing the info with others,
as well as networking with other business people on and off the web, and
that is one reason I began this list.
Women are kinda of new to the computer arena as far as the internet
goes... I think... and many women can work from home now, and be with
their preschoolers and there for their other children, after school.
I have a 16 month old and love being able to work from home.
I'd like us to address struggles of scheduling and such for other work
at home moms, and share solutions some of us have found in the process.
I want you all to feel free to invite subscribers to our list, post
anything you'd like to about your online business/es, challenges,
ideas, etc. Our subscription page is
http://www.onelist.com/subscribe.cgi/wmncompbiz and just forward
one of our newsletter/posts to anyone you think might like to join us.
If we get lots of folks, and lots of posts you may want to go to onelist
and change to digest format.
Once again, welcome, and make yourself at home here. Anyone with ICQ,
my UIN# is 6045550 and feel free to add me to your contact list.
Have a great weekend,
Marlene

Focus on Cleanups
by Gary Lockwood

We all have messes in our lives. If you have stacks of paper around
your
desk, you have a mess. When you procrastinate on an incomplete project,
it
is a mess. Each time you drag out making an important decision, you
have
another mess.

Messes are situations of disorder, conflict and incompletion.
Consciously and
subconsciously, your mind keeps coming back to these messes. They cause
you to be distracted, lose energy, break concentration and reduce your
confidence. These loose ends can include finances, relationships, your
workspace, physical well-being, agreements and legal contracts.

We donšt create a mess on purpose. It just happens. We get busy and put
off
making that important change in our office. We dread taking that
unpleasant
action and delay it again and again. We allow an off-hand comment to go
without a response because we donšt want to deal with a confrontation.

On each of these occasions, we leave behind a situation that is
unresolved.
Throughout the day, day after day, week after week, our minds wander
back
to the mess. Because your mind keeps processing this complication, you
do
not fully concentrate on the truly important work at hand. Often,
self-doubt
sets in, causing us to question ourselves. All this eats up your energy
and can
make you feel weary. When you hear people say they are mentally
exhausted, you can bet they have messes.

When you clean up an unresolved predicament, then it stops stealing
brain
cycles. When you resolve the situation, you can move on to new
opportunities. Each time you clean up a mess, you increase
concentration,
confidence and energy.

So how do you go about this cleanup? Here are a few tips... The first
requirement is to recognize the messes. So often, we keep plugging away
at
our lives without realizing that wešre devoting lots of time and energy
just
coping with all these unresolved issues. In my business coaching
practice, Išll
frequently see clients lugging around twenty or thirty messes that are
complicating their lives. When we begin articulating these loose ends,
we
often discover that some can be cleaned up in a matter of hours or even
minutes.

Herešs a good exercise to start making you consciously aware of your
cleanup opportunities. On a piece of paper, draw two lines that divide
the
sheet of paper into four sections. In one section, write down all the
projects
that you have started, but not yet completed. This should include small
and
large projects at home and at the office.

In another section, note the projects you have not started yet. These
are the
ones that you have been thinking about or considering, but have not
taken any
action. Use the third section for tasks that you are not doing, but
want to
start. These may include things like blocking off some quiet time each
day,
call a few key clients, write a letter, balance the checkbook, exercise
or read
to your children.

In the fourth section of your sheet of paper, identify the things you
would like
to change. This may include tasks you would like to stop doing, the
organization of your staff, your working hours, or the technology you
have in
place.

Everything you have written in the four sections of this paper
represent an
opportunity for cleanup. Some may be quick and easy. Do those right
away.
Others may take awhile. Choose one or two to tackle this month. If you
clean
up a mess a month, you will see and feel a tremendous difference in
your
attitude, energy and ability to focus.

Herešs another exercise that will help eliminate the messes. On another
sheet
of paper, write down the things that you are tolerating. We all have
things we
are putting up with. We endure that sticky computer key because we
donšt
want to bother fixing it. We condone an insolent staffer because itšs
so much
trouble to replace them. We allow a supplier to make consistently late
deliveries because we donšt want the confrontation.

Most of us discover that we have quite a list of tolerations. There are
two
ways to remove a toleration from the list. One way is to decide once
and for
all that we really want it this way. We prefer it. We embrace this
situation and
are happy the way it is.

The other way to get a toleration off the list is to take action. Donšt
put up
with it anymore. Do something about it. Get rid of the problem. Notice
that I
donšt say this is easy. Some of these things have been around a long
time and
take some work and tough decisions to fix. Yet, here again, when you
stop
abiding by unacceptable situations, you increase your peace of mind,
concentration, confidence and energy.

Clearly, cleaning up messes and eliminating the things you tolerate are
major
steps toward simplifying your life at work and at home. The world is a
complicated, messy place in which to live. Donšt make it any harder by
piling
on more obstacles.

Take stock of your opportunities for cleanup. Take action to simplify
your
life. Clean up those loose ends. Target a mess a month and feel your
energy
and attitude soar.

Questions About Spamming
by: Ava Farrington
Copyright 1998 All Rights Reserved

Why do people spam other people when they know the risks involved?

In this writers opinion stupidity!

It is vital that you portray honesty and integrity to your customers if
you are to be truly successful.

Does spamming portray this image? NO, it is amateurish at best.

There are no several bulk email programs on the market today which will
hide the identity of your ISP. However you have to give some kind of
contact information in the email for potential customers to reach you
and thus they still gain your identity!

Most if not all Home Based Business opportunities on the Net strictly
forbid the use of Spam in promoting their products or services and
people who are discovered will be removed from the program.

This being the case why would anyone work their behind off only to
jeopardize it all by Spamming?

Will we ever see the end of Spam? Not until everyone who gets a spam
message reports the offense and refuses to do business with the
individuals who use spam as part of their marketing plan!

I can't say I have never read a spam email that I received, however I
have never purchased anything from a business that has sent me spam nor
will I ever.

Another question: Why would anyone harvest the email addresses from an
advertising mailing list?

Everyone that is a member of the list can send their ads directly to the
list. One post reaches every member. And to top it off these people have
agreed to receive your ads or they wouldn't be one the list right?

Well about a month ago I joined one such list and within a few days I
started getting from 4 to 10 Spams a day.

How do I know they came from that list you ask? Because I opened a new
email account just for that list, so I could track my advertising
efforts.

I got a few offers that I actually spent time going out and looking for
a different representative of the same company to purchase the product
they offered in the spam.

So you see the Spammer only succeeded in advertising for their
competition!

Do you think that was their intention? I think not!

The spammer got a nice thank you for showing me the product, and was
informed that I purchased it from someone else because I did not feel
they were a trustworthy person to deal with because they spam.

So as they say this is my opinion and you can take it or leave it :~)

Spam is a very hot issue for a lot of folks and being a business person
that has to spend a few hours a day just answering email, I get mighty
sick of the delete button at times.

Autoresponders

I have a program I want to talk to you about that I think will save you
a lot of time and money.

In my online search to find a company to host an autoresponder for me I
came across this program called The Rubberband Autoresponder.

It is a shareware program that you can download and use for 30 days free
of charge. To register the program only costs $24.95. Which is darn
cheap in my opinion.

The cheapest autoresponder I found was $24.00 a year for one.

With this program you can set up as many as you like and your email
message can be as long as you like. Their are no limits (after
registration) on the amount of hits your responder gets.

And best of all you do not have to log on to the internet to change your
autoresponders unless you want to configure it to auto start when
opened.

It is really a great little program. *Deep Blush* I have to admit that
is when the newsletter is so late going out today as I spent most of the
day playing with this program.

HOW TO START A PROFITABLE HOME-BASED BUSINESS

In these days, it's becoming increasingly difficult to make ends meet
with just
one source of income. Thus, more and more people are investigating the
possibilities of starting their own extra-income business. Most of
these
part-time endeavors are started and operated from the comfort and
privacy
of the home.

Most of these people are making the extra money they need. Some have
wisely and carefully built these extra income efforts into full-time,
very
profitable businesses. Others are just keeping busy, having fun, and
enjoying
life as never before. The important thing is that they are doing
something other
than waiting for the government to give them a handout; they are
improving
their lot in life, and you can do it, too!

The fields of mail order selling, multi-level marketing, and in-home
party sales
have never been more popular. If any of these kinds of extra income
producing ideas appeal to you, then you owe it to yourself to check
them out.
But these aren't the only fields of endeavor you can start and operate
from
home, with little or no investment, and learn as you go.

If you type, you can start a home-based typing service; if you have a
truck or
have access to a trailer, you can start a clean-up/hauling service.
Simply
collecting old news papers from your neighbors can get you started in
the
paper recycling business. More than a few enterprising housewives have
found success and fortune by starting home and/or apartment cleaning
services. If you have a yard full of flowers, you can make good extra
money
by supplying fresh cut flowers to restaurants and offices in your area
on a
regular basis. You might turn a ceramics hobby into a lucrative
personalized
coffee mug business. What I'm saying is that in reality, there's
literally no end
to the ways you can start and operate a profitable extra income
business from
your home.

The first thing you must do, however, is some basic market research.
Find out
for yourself, first-hand, just how many people there are in your area
who are
interested in your proposed product or service, and would be "willing
to
stand in line and pay money for it." This is known as defining your
market and
pinpointing your customers. If after checking around, talking about
your idea
with a whole lot of people over a period of one to three months, you
get the
idea that these people would be paying customers, your next effort
should be
directed toward the "detailing" of your business plan. The more precise
and
detailed your plan - covering all the bases relating to how you'll do
everything
that needs to be done - the easier it's going to be for you to attain
success.
Such a plan should show your start-up investment needs, your
advertising
plan, your production costs and procedures, your sales program, and how
your time will be allocated. Too often, enthusiastic and ambitious
entrepreneurs jump in on an extra income project and suddenly find that
the
costs are beyond their abilities, and the time requirements more than
they can
meet. It pays to lay it all out on paper before you get involved, and
the clearer
you can "see" everything before you start, the better your chances for
success.

Now, assuming you've got your market targeted, you know who your
customers are going to be and how you're going to reach them with your
product or service. And you have all your costs as well as time
requirements
itemized. The next step is to set your plan in motion and start making
money.

Here is the most important "secret" of all, relating to starting and
building a
profitable home-based business, so read very carefully. Regardless of
what
kind of business you start, you must have the capital and the available
time to
sustain your business through the first six months of operation.
Specifically,
you must not count on receiving or spending any money coming in from
your
business on yourself or for your bills during those first six months.
All the
income from your business during those first six months should be
reinvested
in your business in order for it to grow and reach our planned first
year
potential.

Once you've passed that first six months milestone, you can set up a
small
monthly salary for yourself, and begin enjoying the fruits of your
labor. But the
first six months or operation for any business are critical, so do not
plan to
use any of the money your business generates for yourself during that
period.

If you've got your business plan properly organized, and have
implemented
the plan, you should at the end of your first year be able to begin
thinking
about hiring other people to alleviate some of your work-load. Remember
this: Starting a successful business is not a means towards either a
job for
yourself or a way to keep busy. It should be regarded as the beginning
of an
enterprise that will grow and prosper, with you as the top dog.
Eventually,
you'll have other people doing all the work for you, even running the
entire
operation, while you vacation in the Bahamas or Hawaii and collect or
receive regular income from your initial efforts.

selling,
order fulfillment, and other aspects of home-based businesses, watch
