Hi,<br>I have just joined this club and browsing
the messages.<br>I am using 6.1 and have tried
setting it up for cable modem.<br>Once you have the cable
modem running from Windows, get the IP address that is
assigned by DHCP server. You also need to find out the
address of the DNS that are used for this
connection.<br>The rest is that you need to enter the network setup
manually in Linux. The drawback is that whenever the IP
add change then you need to re-do it. I do not know
whether there is a DHCP client running on Linux. ANybody
knows about this please share.
There is a DHCP client for Linux. During setup
using YAST1 (and probably in YAST2), if you elect to
set up your install as a real network (not in
loopback mode) one of the next questions is do you want to
set up your system as a DHCP client. I can't remember
if 5.3 did that, (my last prievious full version),
but I am pretty sure 6.2 asked the same thing. You
can always go back into YAST and configure DHCP to be
started during the boot senquence. The DHCP should fill
in all the needed info including DNS servers. I have
a friend with a cable modem and dynamic addressing.
He says his IP address is always the same, but you
can't count on that. <br><br>Interesting also... I use
DSL service with a static IP, however, I noticed one
of the packages in 6.4 is a PPPoE service. (DSL
doesn't use DHCP, but something else that I think this
PPPoE is the Linux equivalent to) Would be fun to play
with but I have no need.<br><br>Jamie
Hi,<br><br>I just examined my boot messages and
found out that there is one Failed message.<br>It said
that /dev/pts failed to be mounted or already
mounted.<br><br>I do not know what is device pts. Can anybody in
this forum tell me how to solve this? Where should I
look to see the pts
device?<br><br>Regards<br>Fespehana
what version of SuSE and can you post the entire
boot output so I can see where it is coming up.
<br><br>you can use SHIFT + PAGE UP to move the console
screen back up to look at errors or just post your error
log file here.
If the problem is that its remounting a
device<br>thats already mounted you can examine<br>your
'/etc/fstab' file to see if there are<br>different lines
pointing to the same device<br>/dev/pts<br><br>just a
thought..
Hi,<br>Thanks for the advice.<br>I have fixed the
problem by editing the file fstab, I deleted the lines
referring to device pts. But I still do not know what is
device pts for. What I know is that withour this device,
my system can still run and I don't miss
anything.<br><br>FE
Do you have a backup copy of your fstab<br>I
would like to see what the line looked<br>like ( the
line that you deleted ), what was<br>its mount
point.<br>You should comment things out with a '#' at<br>the
beginning of the line instead of
deleting<br>them.<br><br>If the mount line was there it probably needs<br>to
access the /dev/pts device somewhere or other.
Someone let me know what package you use to view
videos. I got a digital camera that takes videos that I
want to play in linux instead of windows.<br><br>I
have 6.4 amd k6-2 266 64MB ram. <br><br>Thanks.
I came back form my holiday and turned on my
Linux computer, I it all loaded up properly and I got
the ushall log in screen, when I whent to log in it
gave me a messge "/usr/X11R6/lib/xdm/GiveConsole
exited with a non-zero status."<br>I when into root
shell with out any problems and tryed to start kde from
there, It said that there was a problem with my X
server. I'v tryed to reconfigre the x server but it wont
let me. If you could help please let me know.
I wonder if anyone has tried the new Y! Messenger
Beta release for linux users... they say that has been
tested on Redhat 6.0 and later... <br><br>I tried just
now on my computer with SUSE 5.3, but I was unable to
install the program because of the lack of several
libraries... But the reason could simply be that my SUSE
version is too old... let me know if it works with the
more recent SUSE release... thanks!<br><br>Marco
It does in fact work on kernals later than 2.2.13
, I have in up and running now, and it's fine. the
only thing I miss, is that it doesn't allow me to log
in under invisible, (I have to change once logged
in). I'm using SuSE 6.4, and it does a great job.
when i try to install software using the command ./configure it fails out at
"checking for X..". what am i doing wrong? please let me know thank you Rob
hi, what kind of software are you
installing<br>and do you have the x server up while you<br>run
'configure'?<br>if configure is a shell script you can open<br>it an
any editor and see where its getting<br>stuck.
Hello, I wonder if some of you ran into
this.<br>I have a username with which I log into<br>my
system ( sometimes its even 'root' )<br>I have a login
name with the ISP that is totally<br>different that my
user accounts in linux.<br>I was able to configure the
POP side of kmail<br>to read my mail from the ISP
irrespective of <br>what user I'm logged in as on the
system.<br><br>Sending mail is a problem still. If I'm logged<br>in as
root and I send email using kmail, it tries<br>to send
email as root@... and, of course,<br>SMTP server
rejects the request.<br><br>Is there a way in Kmail to
configure the Identity<br>of the email sender ( independent
of the login<br>account )<br><br>The obvious
workaround is to create a login <br>account on the system
that matches the login<br>name with the ISP, <br>but
I'm not totally satisfied :-<)D
Has anyone seen a sendmail8.11.0 rpm for suse
6.4. Id like to upgrade our mail server, but can't
seem to locate a new rpm. Has suse not put one out
yet? I realize Suse7 has the new rpm, but I don't want
to upgrade the whole server to 7 yet. Thx
I think there is a utility called<br>kmpg. I use
the file manager utility<br>that very closely
resembles the windows<br>explorer and it has this utility (
kmpg or<br>something like that ) associated with
mpeg<br>files. If kmpg from the command line doesn't<br>work let
me know. I'll look into it for you.<br><br>I think
xmms now has a plugin for viewing<br>mpeg files. Go to
www.xmms.org to find out<br>more about it. I pesonally didn't
install this<br>plugin because it relies on other
software to<br>actually process the mpeg file which I
didn't<br>like.<br><br>HTH.
Thanks for responding! I will look into
kmpg<br>and the other one tonight.<br><br>I have a new
digital camera that takes mpegs that<br>I would like to
view within linux.<br><br>I need to get usb working
too but may wait for 2.4.0 to come out.<br>Thanks
again. -steve.
Im wondering if anyone else has had this problem.
When I go to the display properties, my system locks
up, and my monitor states that the frequency is out
of range. I went to the kde control panel, and when
I click on the screensaver section, it does it
again. Is the screensaver changing resolution or is
there a bug somewhere. I've never encountered this
problem before. Changing to a lower resolution is not an
option Im looking at, any others?
I'm running 6.4 here and ymessenger is running
fine now, but I had the problem before.<br>I THINK I
HAD SQUID2 RUNNING WHEN I HAD THE PROBLEM BUT I'M NOT
POSITIVE. Maybe ymess doesn't like proxies, should be easy
enough to try lot's of luck
Hi list,<br><br>I've the problem that I can not 'switch' my ATI Rage 128 to
hardware acceleration. That mesasoft-stuff is quite slow.<br><br>Thanks for any
advise.<br><br>bohermann
Are you using the Accelerated drivers? <br>What
version of S.u.S.e. are you using <br>6.3 or 6.4. If you
using 6.3 thyen you need<br>to go to SuSe's web site
and get a XFree86-3.3.6<br>server it has been
modified to Acclerated X servers. If you have 6.4 then the
XFree 4.X server has the drivers for the 3D cards. Or
you could get XFree 4.0 had install it on
6.3.<br><br>Carl Spangenberger
I'm using Suse 7.0 with XFree 4.0. The server is called r128. According to the
description it is the rigth one but Sax2 doesn#t offer me the `knob' to select
acceleration.<br><br>Harald Bonse
You need to go into the XFree86.conf file <br>and
see if there is a <br>Option "Accel" "on"<br>line in
the file were the ATI Driver is found.<br>If there is
not one then put one in. <br>If the is one but it
says "Off" or "no" <br>then change it to "on"
