I stand (partially) corrected. It is not possible to write directly into
these 'files'. I've just checked, using 'cpuinfo' as an example. Even
though it's possible to apparently add wrire access (via chmod), it's
still not possible to write directly into this 'file'.

No offense taken. Burning DVD's are fairly new to me. I was using Nero with
the Data DVD option. Is there someway I can tell from the actual DVD whether I
might have goofed? Sounds possible.

Thanks,

Dave

Just a suggestion. Please don't be offended, but did you tell your DVD
burner that it was to burn an ISO image rather than to copy this as a
file? I mention this because I have just made this mistake without
  thinking what I was doing.

YES! I have that setup on my FreeBSD machine and I love it. Very small

You can't write to cpuinfo because there is no reason, therefore no allowance
for, writing to that field. If it was writeable it would have no value since
it would be meaningless. You can't e.g. add CPUs by writing to /proc.

On the other hand there are several hundred kernel parameters which you *can*
change by writing to /proc, and Georgina gave you one very clear example.

This is an example of how linux compares to old school unix - on solaris, to
change such values, you edit /etc/system and reboot. On hpux, you change the
kernel parameter in sam, recompile the kernel and reboot. Yikes.

In linux, you just write the desired value to the appropriate location in
/proc, (or preferably issue a sysctl command to do the same thing) and the
change is immediately effective.

Clearly so.

I chose that randomly just to try.

Stick the DVD into the drive and look at the files that it contains. If
you did the job correctly, then you will see all the files which make up
the installation disc. If you simply copied the ISO, then you will see
just the ISO file name.

If you used the Data option, you have probably only copied the ISO.

I have a Win 98 box here (also containing Nero Express 6) that I can
fire up for occasions like this. The option to burn a disk image is
headed "Disc Image or Saved Project".

Good luck

Hi,

I am new to Linux but have Suse 10.0 installed OK and use it for email
and WEB surfing.Really like it and intend to move to 10.1 (or .2) in
the near future.
It has been working fine with a CRT monitor but I scored a really good
HP LCD.

Plugged it in and booted into Linux and the desktop comes up fine and
clear with one exception. Smack in the middle is an error box that says
"Image is Outside of range'. Try as I might I can't get rid of it.
This monitor was working fine on a WIN XP machine so I suspect it
might be a Linux issue but I don't know enough about Linux to be sure.

The machine is is installed on is a Compaq Deskpro EN 866mhz with
512MbRAM.

Can anybody suggest how to sort this issue?

I have seen this message on my LCD, but I have experienced it with both
Linux and Windows. My LCD allows for a maximum refresh frequency of 75
Hz. Many CRT's go higher.

I also find that you can have a number of settings for the display not
optimally set for the hardware, and have it work with a CRT while not
working at all with an LCD. The easy solution has been for me to borrow a
crt off of some other computer temporarily and change the video settings to
ones that I'm sure will work with the LCD, and then changing back.

I'm fairly new to SuSE 10.0 too and this group also so hello everyone.
I have had issues with video cards so have experimented a little.

You may want to move your mouse cursor over the resolution setting
(icon) at the top bar. I assume you can see this. It will tell you
the resolution and vertical refresh rate.

You can also click the icon and see the possible resolutions that SuSE
thinks are available, or you can configure the display settings. You
can also tweek the H & V ranges under 'monitor' - change.

Actually SuSE 10.1 seems to be better at deciding monitor capability.
At least I found it to more closely match the resolution choices and
resolution capabilities of my unlisted monitor. If I let SuSE 10.0
decide it thinks I have a Compaq P70 when in fact I have an IBM P70.
The difference is that the monitor ends up being driven below it's
sync capability and the monitor shuts down and SuSE hangs.

If you change anything be sure to 'Test' first, when given the choice
otherwise you could end up with a blank monitor and no simple way to
see what is happening. If that happens...

CTL + ALT + F1

log in as root
init 3
sax2 -l

'save'

init 5

and try again.

Since I am fairly new at Linux I hope I'm on the right track here.

I'm fairly new to the linux scene, but I'm pretty good with computers.
I installed SUSE 10.1 w/ KDE over the weekend on my spare computer,
and following the install of the OS I decided to install a new hard
drive. It was freshly formatted with NTFS. When I plugged it in
linux could see it fine, but when I selected it from the sysinfo:/ it
and error of "permission denied". I thought this may have been
because of the NTFS permissions, so i loaded YaST up and went into
system and selected the partitioner. I selected the partition /hdb1
and edited it. I formated it with the Reiser. I'm still getting the
"permission denied" error when try to access it through sysinfo:/

In YaST partitioner it doesn't show anything for the mount point, and
it doesn't have anything under mount by. I thought that KDE was
supposed to mount the drive when it started, or when i clicked on it.
Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing?

Thanks for you help

I reply:

I agree with Ken. Most people can get started with Linux now and with a
little effort, learn their way around. I dabbled with Linux for a long
time but, for a long time it was just too hard! I approached Linux, as a
user and wanted to be able to install it and do most major tasks without
a lot of study. I wanted to have something to work with before I had to
learn the techy stuff.

People did spend a lot of time becoming familiar with windoze, but they
started with a working system (for the most part), and then began to
learn how to use and/or fix all the problems. That is what I was looking
for in Linux. I wanted a reasonably easy install that would get me up
and running so I would have something to learn on.

When I installed SuSE 9.0, I believed that Linux was finally almost
there and began working with it in a dual boot configuration. Since,
9.2 I have installed SuSE on many systems, including some laptops, and
have not found the problems to be any greater than I experienced early
in learning Windoze. Certainly by 10.0 most people can install and begin
working and learning it on most systems. I now work exclusively in SuSE
and will never go back to M$!

Learning Linux is harder than learning windoze, but not because it is so
obscure (that once was true, but I do not believe it is now). The reason
is that when people began learning windoze they did not know anything
else (except maybe DOS for some of us old timers ;-)). Most people
trying to learn Linux have to struggle with the fact that it does not
work just like they are used to so it seems harder. And it does not come
already installed on your PC!

Ken and Georgina gave some good advice. I might add, if your main
problem is getting it installed then download the disks or if that is
not workable for you, you might google "linux distros" and you will be
able to find a number of places that will sell you the disks (CD's or
DVD's) for pretty cheap. Hang in there!

I don't know why these things hit me after start asking for help, but
I'm going to write what i did icase it helps someone else.

I had to start up a rootshell instace, so I'd have root permissions. I
then ran a couple commands:

mkdir /mnt/hdb1
mount /dev/hdb1 /mnt/hdb1

Note: I knew it was hdb1 from looking at the partitioner in YaST.

This made it so that i could get access to the drive, but when I
rebooted it wouldn't let me in again, so i repeated the process of
mkdir.... and mount.... once i was back at that part i loaded YaST and
went into the system and selected partitioner. Once i was in there i
selected the partition that i was having issues with. I went to edit.
From there i selected fstab options and then i checked the option of
user mountable. Then i selected ok and backed out and applied the
changes. After I rebooted it seems to be working fine for me, and it
mounts itselft whenever i start up the machine. [:)]

This linux stuff is quite a bit different than the M$ system i'm used
to, but I'm really liking it. Rock On Linux!

David, Ken is exactly correct. If you were creating a data disk and
dragged the iso image over to the disk, it copied the ISO FILE to the
disk. You need to tell Nero to "Create Disc from Image".

And there were typically plemty of (recurring) problems to fix! In
Linux, once something is sorted, it almost always stays sorted.

Ah! Another old DOSer. Actually, this is an advantage because under
Linux, familiarity with the command line is a real advantage, but not
essencial for normal use of say SuSE Linux.

Apps like Open Office, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc should not present too
many problems. KDE desktop manager can look much like MS Windows. Not
too much to frighten the horses.

I suggest that the main areas of concern/difficulty arise from:

The shear size of the typical Linux installation. Bear in mind though,
that not only is the operating system being installed, but also probably
most of the application software that you will ever need. Hence all the
questions at the start of an install.

Linux provides a very comprehensive system of file access privilages.
This can cause a lot of confusion. It is one of the reasons why Linux is
such a secure environment. Do spend time to become familier with this.

> And it does not come
> already installed on your PC!

Not entirely true! PCs can now be obtained with Linux preinstalled, but
you will need to search for them.

And DO get yourself a good book about Linux. You can then absorb it all
in bite (byte?) sized chunks.

I have a copy of "Beginning SuSE Linux -- From Novice to Proffessional"
by Kier Thomas (publishers Apress, 2005, ISBN 1-59059-458-4). This is
based on SuSE v9.1, but IMHO is a very good intro.

However, I am not sure about my iPod Nano. Will it run sm00thly with suse 10?
What will I use instead of iTunes, and will I be able to share files

I bought a Linux Format magazine that comes with some desktop
managers, so I installed one that I thought it was interesting to give
a try. FVWM. I installed it, when the starting window appeared I
selected that desktop, the default desktop was KDE and I could choose
Gnome and the some others.
I choose FVWM, but now it won't load. And the Linux cannot load the
startup window to select again KDE to go back to my default desktop.

If I try to run in safe mode, I just enter in the system with no
desktop and really I don't have idea how to load a desktop in safe
mode from the terminal. Or how to reset to the original desktop.

I don't want to reinstall Suse again for that experiment I made.

Anyone has an idea what can I do to go back to my default desktop KDE?

Markus,

I know there are some alternatives to I-Tunes written for Linux native.
Unfortunately someone else it going to have to help you with that
because I don't have an IPOD so I've never used them.

If you are looking at using Wine, however, you MAY wish to check out
Crossover Office (http://www.codeweavers.com/). It's a front-end to
wine and it makes installing MANY of the Windows applications you need
to install a snap. I BELIEVE that I-Tunes is even one of their
supported applications. I've been using crossover office for years and
I LOVE it. It sure beats having to manually configure wine.

Subject: bmw files in Linux?

Hello Everyone,

I need a program that will read .bmw files, break them apart into music scores
and the midi files, and play the tunes.

I attempted to run bagpipe music writer under wine. It almost works. No sound.
I can get music scores, and it attempts to pipe the sound to the pc speaker, but
nothing comes out. It should be piping the midi music to the sound card, but in
Linux there is no way to configure the program to pipe the midi music to the
speakers connected to the sound card.

The Bagpipe Music Reader program works well in Windows.

So, does anyone know of a program in Linux that will read .bmw files?

Or how to get midi sound out of wine?

Thanks,

roland

The default desktop GUI should come up in run level 5. If you want to
try to load it from the terminal mode...

init 5 (after logging in as root.)

Of course if the default is now the GUI that doesn't work then I don't
know, I'm fairly new.

Daniel,

There are a number of desktops in SuSe, and I don't rem which one is which off
the top of my head.

A couple of the desktops are a bit ... weird. They look like nothing is there,
but it is. They look like a plain blue or plain gray screen, and no icons.
However, if you right or left click on the screen a menu pops up. I do not
recall if FVWM is one of these desktops. Try right and left clicking on the
desktop and see if a menu pops up.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for that - have a couple of CRT monitors, including the one I
am replacing with the LCD, so I guess the best thing would be to
locate a manual for my LCD first. Never got one with the monitor
which is second hand. Mr Google should know where to look!

Then I'll have to have a look at what the current settings are and
adjust as necessary.

Fingers crossed...hope I don't let the smoke out of the LCD in error

Hi Folks. this is more a request than a problem.
I run 10.1 on both a desktop and laptop. great no problems really, but
as a user not a computer expert it's always a real pain getting DVDs
and AVI's etc to work. right now a week after a clean install I have
pictures but no sound on both. would it be possible for a simple list
of RPM codec's be produced that would get all xine/Mplayers to work.

I realise that some people still believe that Linux is for
the "Educated few" and if you can't manage to work it out, go back to
Windows, but I am a growing number of people how use linux because I
prefer it as a OS, and enjoy what I can do with it, without really
understanding the Kernal or wishing too.

Anyway if you can help Many thanks,, and you experts, THANKS for a

It's pretty easy if you grab dvdcss from somewhere, and add the goodies from
packman - I think this is about all I have from packman, but I'm not sure
which ones were absolutely necessary for the multimedia stuff. I did it with
apt, but you might want to use smart or something to make it easier than just
downloading rpms and doing trial and error install attempts.

-r-xr--r-- 1 name users .....)
> ls -la package.rpm
