The installation program should have done that automatically. If you changed
your video card after installation, an easy fix is to login as root, migrate
to /etc/X11, open xorg.conf in a text editor, find the line in 'Section
"Device"' that says 'Driver, and replace whatever driver that is there with
'radeon'.

Alternatively, go to a text terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6], login as root, and
run 'sax2' to create a whole new xorg.conf file using the radeon driver.

All the above assumes use of a SuSE version prior to 11.2. In 11.2, you
should be able to delete xorg.conf entirely and have X automatically use the
radeon driver. It is possible in 11.2 that you would still need to perform
the above procedure.

This is my first foray into the world of LINUX and I am in Over My Head w/SUSE
Enterprise Desktop & HP-2133. I got this little gem because it did have LINUX
already installed, along with Open Office, which I have been using on Windows
for several years. I was attempting to use the unit to display some Impress
presentations using the VGA port. I tried it on the LCD display from my
computer and it appeared to work correctly. The next time I tried using it,
with a 52" LCD TV and it's VGA input, I could not get any display. SO, I
started to play with the Display configuration program. It was setup for the
800x600 display on the computer and a much higher definition for the monitor
port. I changed it to 800x600 to match the computer LCD. It tested OK but when
I clicked the box to save the changes, it froze the system up. NOW, when I
boot-up LINUX, it cannot start the GUI and ends up in command line mode. How
can I fix this???

I use pidgin. It support about 20 different IM protocols, and
like kopete, can handle multiple simultaneous logins on the same
or different networks

it doesn't have cam support yet, but it's excellant.

Login as root, then do 'init 3; sax2' to close down the login manager and
start the GUI configurator. If it doesn't work well enough to suit you, try
'man sax2' to see what options may apply to make it work better. After
running sax2 and saving its efforts as a new xorg.conf file, you can execute
startx to test the result, bypassing the login manager, which can be a good
idea until you know the new config is acceptable. Once it's working OK, log
out of X, then do 'init 5' to get your login manager back.

No, wait, that is a trademark.

YEEHAA!

Got my problem fixed! The GUI is back.

Now, can anyone guide me to a step-by-step procedures for upgrading my
SUSE and OpenOffice? I have a 3GB RAM Disk and a 2GB SD card in this
machine and several 2GB USB sticks to work with. I also have an older,
USB, HP, R/W CD Drive, if that is any help.

The computer came with LINUX already installed - it is what it is.

I have no idea what is going on or which file(s) are the problem. All I
can do is what the system suggests - Am using e2fsck correctly even??

My goal in buying a LINUX machine was to start at the GUI level and work
back towards the command line environment. In other words, I am a total
beginner in the LINUX world.

My other alternative would be to re-install the whole distribution,
downloaded from HP. However, I don't have a clue as to how to approach
that as it has no CD drive and the one external drive I have doesn't
seem to be recognized by the OS.

Ah, ok. I mistakenly presumed you're a more experienced user.

please show us the output of this command typed on the command line:

Let's avoid that. Yes, in Microsoft "reboot, re-install, reformat & reinstall"
is the time-worn method for "solving" a problem (it doesn't solve anything --
it just puts you back where you were before the problem bit you -- but the
source of the problem continues to exist.) but there are usually much better,
less destructive, and ultimately less time-consuming ways of solving problems.

OK, I don't have a "%" command prompt but, I tried to mount from what I have.
These are the last few lines transcribed from the screen:

fsck failed. Please repair manually and reboot. The root
file system is currently mounted read-only. To remount it
read-write do:

      bash# mount -n -o remount,rw /

Attention: Only CONTROL-D will reboot the system in this
maintenance mode. shutdown or reboot will not work.

Give root password for login:
(none):~ # mount
/dev/sda2/ on / type ext3 (rw,noatime,nodiratime)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw)
(none):~ #

I BELIEVE that XEN presents pseudo-devices which will not
be using the same drivers as the actual hardware on your
machine, you'll have to take the appropriate action as if
you swapped out a motherboard and other significant
components (disk drive ID's probably won't match, either).

Windows gets mad if registered installation has more than
4 significant items change between boot-ups, and you have
to make phone call to Redmond to clear up that situation.
If your computer has been on the public internet, then
it has most likely registered itself for all practical
purposes, by sending an encryption of your key and a
hardware inventory to Microsoft's database of installed
systems, and if the comparisons mismatch by too much,
your installed system will be flagged as a pirated install,
and will go into a limp-mode (only a couple tasks can be
run at once, shutdown every 60 minutes, etc.)

Then, the question becomes, will they LET you run it in
a virtual machine -- some Windows licenses specifically
prohibit running the OS on a virtual machine.

It's OK to be new & learning. I upgraded from 11.2 -> 11.3 not long ago, so if I
understand you correctly, maybe I can help.

If you installed 11.2 yourself, the simplest upgrade is pretty much like your
initial install. Get the file. Burn to disk. Boot from the burned disk. Follow
the prompts.

That's straightforward if ...

- You have only OpenSuSE 11.2 running on your machine now.

- You want the same applications, disk layout & etc.

I looked at the page here: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Installation
It's a bit confusing.

Prep ...

-- You probably want to get your 11.2 up to date first. Use the updater applet,
or YAST ->  online update.

-- It's always a good idea to backup you user data first.

-- You might want to know which partitions your installation is on & whether you
have Gnome or KDE desktop. (The installers will generally duplicate your
previous choices. But, when there's a prompt sometimes it's scarey to guess.)

Upgrade ...

-- Burn the image file you downloaded to a disk. (In KDE, the burner application
is "k3b".)

-- Put the disk in the drive & restart the computer.

-- Follow the prompts.

Aftermath ...

-- You probably want to do an "online update" right away to sweep up any
security updates or similar.

-- 11.3 installs a different NVidia video driver. If you have an NVidia graphics
card, it might behave a little differently. (Did for me, but I was using 2
monitors.)

Alternative ...

*In principle* there is an online upgrade via the package manager. I say *in
principle* because I haven't done this myself. See here for instructions:

A long delayed follow up question. Can XEN run OS/2. I would be installing from
the origional floppies and CD disk.

Thanks, Andy

"attach" the existing windows 7 partition to XEN so I can boot linux then boot
windows 7 under it? If so how please???

Subject: Problem with wireless configuration with 11.3 SUSE
therrera1550
Send Email Send Email

Hi All,

I upgraded last night from 11.0 to 11.3 upon learning that there is a two year
support window for SUSE versions. The upgrade went smooth for the most part
except I noticed that my wireless settings were not preserved. Not only that
but that instead of YAST the wireless is not controlled / configured via a
network management application that I have not seen before. I am not very
technical with SUSE and used YAST to configure my networking interfaces and
services.

There is some kind of bug with the new management tool for the networking and it
crashes just as I am changing the dhcp settings (default) to static ones that
coincide with my network layout.
I would like to know if there is a way to let YAST continue to be the tool of
choice for networking? When I run YAST a message informs me that networking is
configured by the management tool and it only lets me see the configuration but
not change it.

How can I set it back? Is there a config file that needs to be edited or is
there a software switch in some app that will let YAST handle this task?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Tony
