I think the Droid ad was referring to a LED that will serve as a
camera flash on the soon-to-be seen Droid phone. Very limited utility.
Of course, it is always possible to boost the equivalent ISO of a CCD
sensor, at the expense of signal to noise ratio.
Let us face it: a camera built into a cell phone is intended for
twitter pics. For substantive photography, get a good SLR.
A real innovation would be a centered behind the screen video camera,
for A/V iChats. As it happens, Apple got a patent on that.
And while I tossing around the cold water of reality, I note that
after all the fussing and griping about AT&T taking so long to allow
multi-media SMS, I have not yet had a single occasion to send some one
a picture via SMS.

You'll need to view the world through teen-aged eyes for that!
Updated your Facebook page in the last 2 hours? Not heard from your friends since lunch time?
Send them a picture! Remind them you still exist since last sending them something this morning.

For 5M pixels to be of any use, the aperture of the cameras need to get bigger. Think iPhone hybrid with a SX-70 transforming package. That was slickest instant camera of that era. Is that what the Ad was going after?

I have a Nokia N95 that I used all the time until I got my iPhone and it has a 5MP Camera with flash
It still was not as good as my older 5MP Canon camera but darn close and the flash made all the difference in the world for low light focus.
Sure you can get some stills to be reasonable on the iphone with low light if you hold really still but with a flash you can "snap" pics more readily with a better chance of getting useable photos. The N95 was a great phone and had a reasonably good camera such that I did not need to carry a 2nd camera on my business trips. The iphone is OK as well, I just have to work harder to insure my shots get illuminated well especially if inside under florescent lighting.
The overall productivity and application diversity of the iPhone left the N95 in the dust so I haven't looked back. If I know I am going to be taking important project pics I take along my pocket canon..
This follows a reasonably smart market roadmap scenario for Apple. Just like Laptops increasing speeds, we'll want to upgrade iPhones every year to get the next level in performance. We just got 3MP - we can probably expect 4MP next year. Flash doubtful, apple still needs to work on battery life for that. My N95 only needed a charge about once a week..

Aperture size relates to the amount of light the lens allows through to the sensor, and affects brightness of the image - more light (larger aperture) means a brighter image. Aperture size (f-stop) is usually expressed as the ratio of the diameter of the aperture to the focal length of the lens.
As far as I know aperture size and sensor resolution (or number of pixels) have no direct relationship to each other.. Why would they?
--- On Tue, 10/20/09, Jack Gratteau <jackgrat2005@...> wrote:

There are two issues at work - diffraction limitation of resolution, and sensor gain. With a small aperture, the smallest feature you can discriminate is described by the Rayleigh criterion.
For a given focal length and aperture diameter, there is a minimum focal spot on the image plane. From a green center at 550nm to blue at 450 and red at 650, the difference usually doesn't matter.
Having more pixels, or pixels smaller than the smallest feature you can focus produces no improvement in the image. On the contrary, the pixels should be as large as possible to collect as much light. Then other factors relating to pixel size - charge capacity, readout speed, and read noise can be optimized.
The focal length also plays to another short coming of CCD and CMOS sensors - shading - the pixel gain across the image varies. Light that strikes the pixel at an angle, is not recorded as well as those in the center of the image. The short focal length to get the numerical apertures desired for packaging makes it worse. So the processing of the image has to jack up the gain to flatten the image, and that adds noise to outer pixels.
The dimension of the blur circle gets worse when spherical and chromatic errors are applied. It simply makes no sense to apply mega-pixel resolution to a pin-hole camera.

I totally agree with you that the iPhone takes good photos in the dark. In fact
using the "Night Camera" or ProCamera" apps it takes GREAT pictures in the dark.

This message comes using my Sierra cell modem; I can send the same message out through the same server (the only one I have) with a dial-up modem. This same address has worked fine since ATT changed its security settings starting last February (that took several weeks to solve).
As far as I know, I am receiving all of my mail with no problem.

Announcing O'Reilly Answers A useful site that's, well, a different kind of animal
We're launching the beta of O'Reilly Answers http://post.oreilly.com/rd/9z1z8i13mrbooo4mec0utvi5bklnshuhhipsrkfat60, and I'm inviting you to be part of it. In brief, O'Reilly Answers is a community site for sharing knowledge, asking questions, and providing answers that brings together our customers, authors, editors, conference speakers, and Foo (Friends of O'Reilly).
Why Answers, and why now? O'Reilly is at the center of an amazing exchange of knowledge sharing and idea generation. We've created the usual means of facilitating communication between customers, O'Reilly folks, and the outside experts we call "alpha geeks" who contribute to O'Reilly books, conferences, and websites. We can connect through reader reviews, errata submissions, book forums, blog comments, Get Satisfaction, our customer service department, and more. But too much of this conversation is siloed, and not enough is public (e.g., discussions on our internal mailing list for editors, or personal responses to customer questions). O'Reilly Answers will be the place where much of that communication happens from this point forward.
Why participate? The lofty reason: Like O'Reilly, you want to "change the world by spreading the knowledge of innovators." That's our mission, and we've been fortunate enough to build a community of passionate, committed people who love to learn and share their knowledge as they work towards a better world for us all.
The "nice, but what's in it for me" reasons: reputation, recognition, and rewards.
Get Recognized: "Find interesting people" is a core activity at O'Reilly, and an important component of our success. We see Answers as an important way to discover and connect with our next authors, online instructors, videographers, and speakers.
Build Your Reputation: You've learned a lot, why not get credit for all that knowledge? As your submissions to Answers are voted up, your personal reputation on the site increases. At launch, your reputation will be based solely on your participation in O'Reilly Answers. Soon, we're expanding across oreilly.com, so the book errata and book reviews you've submitted, books you've registered, and conferences you've attended, will add reputation points. You'll also earn badges http://post.oreilly.com/rd/9z1z7fmkf3edt8ndprv5kbhjo2tmqb7csagdlpuf9q8 to mark accomplishments and milestones.
Earn Rewards: Glory is great, but discounts and deals are nice, too. We want to reward your contributions to the O'Reilly community. Shortly we'll have a point-based system in place that you can redeem for books, training, courses, and conferences. Details soon, but in the meantime, any actions you take now will count towards your total points.
This is just v.1: The best part of any project on the web is watching it take on a life of its own. With that in mind, we're looking forward to *your* suggestions about where O'Reilly Answers should go, what features should be added, and what benefits and rewards we can offer all of you.
I'd like to acknowledge the projects that have proceeded Answers and inspired us, such as SitePoint Forums (we distribute their books), StackOverflow, Yahoo! Answers, Knol, and many others. They're great resources, and we think the O'Reilly community can create a useful site that's, well, a different kind of animal.
One last thing: O'Reilly Answers is in beta and you may encounter bugs. We're still working on many improvements to the site, such as feeds for each tag, but would love to hear your suggestions for features and improvements. Please send any suggestions/questions/bug reports to answers at oreilly.com.

I think I finally found the problem, after spending hours on the ATT web pages (with false leads), more hours at the ATT store on El Camino and Kiely, etc.
The trouble started after the last Mac Software Update at the SVMUG meeting.
They got worse after trying a few solutions suggested by ATT.
When I opened System Preferences, I noticed MobileMe was there. I never saw it before the last update; I have never used it.
Finally I carefully re-entered all of the settings for Mail that I used last March.
Magically, problems have disappeared. I hope they stay disappeared.

No experience with themacsale.com but did download a half dozen apps free recently from Macheist, which seems very consumer friendly (developer friendly too?).

As many of you know, I have subscribed to the O'Reilly books online service - Safari - ever since its inception. I consider the resource to be a vital tool for my professional work. Essentially for a flat annual fee, I have online access to the full set of O'Reilly technical books, via a web browser. Besides viewing the books online, I am allowed, via a monthly token allocation system, to download and print PDF versions, on a chapter by chapter basis. Finally, should I decide that a physical copy of a book would be useful, I received a discount.
In truth, I use the service almost exclusively online, neither printing or purchasing a physical copy. By nature, whenever I developing, I have Internet access, so the online library is always there.
O'Reilly has recently improved the service with a nicer, cleaner interface. To introduce people to the newly redecorated service, a ten day free trial is being offered. The details are given below, in an announcement sent to us by Marsee Henon.

-- editor for SVMUG

Announcing our latest video--Great Java If you're learning something new, doesn't it make sense to learn how to do it "well"? Great learning from O'Reilly helps you do just that: from start to finish, we teach you tried and true methods for every topic we cover, from Java programming to HTML coding, and more. And, rather than just sitting and watching, you learn by "doing," in real time. It's as if you're sitting next to a good friend (and programming expert) as he shares what he knows and you follow along, step-by-step. It's simply a great way to learn.
Throughout the course, you'll progressively learn to code and compile programs, work extensively with text, and declare, convert, and cast between data types. You'll also read files, get user input, and build arrays, including multi-dimensional arrays. Finally, you'll move into objects, modeling your data and behavior into core Java structures.
Great Java: Level 1 will teach you the fundamentals of Java, from the basics of compilation through methods, objects, and the key concepts of good programming. By the time you're through these lessons, you'll be programming, and programming well. http://post.oreilly.com/rd/9z1zdd2kc55v4g7mqqr2jmp9co5qku80dklmf42rdh0
