Subject: I found the solution to the iDVD problem I had at the Sept meeting.
davstrom
Send Email Send Email

I was not able to burn a DVD or create a disk image with iDVD.

What fixed the problem was my switching from Best Quality to Best
Performance in my iDVD project. Right after I tried this, I was able
to make a disk image, and burn DVDs from that using Disk Utility. (I
wish I was sure of the error number I got before; I think it was
34506. I searched the Apple iDVD forums and found this advice.)

Another thing I did that likely helped was to make more free hard
drive space on my iBook. (That was advice I got at the Sept meeting.)
I had less than 4.7 Gig free, and when I tried to burn a DVD-R disk
from the Finder, my iBook told me I needed at least the size of the
DVD I was burning free on my system hard drive. (I was able to burn
the same information from iPhoto onto a DVD-R. Go figure.) I suspect
that iDVD wants at least 4.5 Gig free hard drive space before it tries
to burn a DVD or a disk image.

Hey Dave,

Anything about a MUG discount, at least for the exhibit halls (that's all I
really go for)?

Corwin,

What OS are you running? Norton System Works has received poor
reviews for OS X, though it used to be a preferred product for OS 9
and earlier. Other than what Norton is telling you, how do you know
there is a problem? In other words, what is the Mac actually doing?

And, what Mac is it? We'd need to know which Mac &definitely which
version of the OS you are running to be able to help you.

The easiest way to check on memory requirements is to use the MemoryX Web site,
and compare the two models. They carry memory for nearly everything,
Apple, PC, Sun, Cisco, etc. Good prices and good service. Most
carry a lifetime warranty and few hassles about replacements.

The answer is: If it is main memory, yes. Check the specs, usually
on a paper tag on the memory module to be sure, but the EDO DIMMs
from the 6500 will work in the 7500. Note that the reverse is not
always true. The 7500 is not very discriminating in its memory
requirements and can use DIMMS that the 6500 can't.

Also note the prices. VERY cheap. I wasn't even aware there were
$4.98 DIMMs, other than at the flea market.

Lynda,

Thank you for the email.

“What OS are you running?” OS X 10.2.8

“Other than what Norton is telling you, how do you know there is a problem?”

I don’t know other than what Norton is telling me.

“In other words, what is the Mac actually doing?”

The Mac itself is not doing anything unusual.

“And, what Mac is it?”

It is a new Mac to me but it is a slightly used one that somebody bought for his wife who did not want to use a Mac and so I got Norton for it.

When I run Norton Disk Doctor that is loaded onto my Desktop I get:

Problem:

A major error was found in the Volume Header Block.

The free block count is incorrect.

The Volume Header Block and its Alternate store important information about your HFS Plus disk, such as the number of files and folders on the disk (1,1,9)

Recommend: You should fix this problem.  To Fix a major problem on the startup disk, restart your computer from the Norton Utilities CD and run Disk Doctor from the CD.

But when I put the CD into the tray, up come two icons but I do not find Disk Doctor.

Personally, I am an old timer from Silicon Valley at age 50 and from that I have seen at least a file header but so far, I have not accessed a file that I cannot read.

It has been about 8 years since I have been exposed to IT type information though.

It doesn’t seem significant to me that the free block count is incorrect, as I know that currently I have plenty of space.

Thank you for any help,

Corwin Pon

This part is what is most important:

“Other than what Norton is telling you, how do you know there is a problem?”

I don’t know other than what Norton is telling me.

Others can certainly chime in with different (or the same) opinions, but I've not heard anything good about Norton on OSX.  For that reason I wouldn't trust what it tells me, especially if there are no other issues.

Here is what I use for maintenance  on my Mac.  Others will have different ideas, opinions & procedures, though.

Repair permissions:  You can do this using Disk Utility, in the utilities folder (it comes with your Mac, or rather, with the OS).

Disk Warrior - this is a third party product.

Mac Janitor - Freeware, can be found on Version Tracker (the free part) http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/

and, TechTools Pro, when there's a real problem.  I don't usually use this at all, unless something is glitching and the other apps don't solve it.

Hope that helps.

The Santa Rosa, CA MUG (aka NCMUG standing for "North Coast ..")
appears to be a large, active, well-run group - operating about 85
miles to the North of us (Menlo Park). In the fall each year, they
sponsor a free one day event called XXX which features vendor booths,
technical talks, and a lunchtime panel discussion. Spouse Gayle & I
have attended for the last three years, largely to attend the
"break-outs" (talks). This year there were 9 of these - done in sets
of 3 parallel sessions at 10, 11, and 2pm. Speakers are primarily
book authors - most of whom live in the Bay Area or up in the "North
Coast" and generally both good speakers and well informed about their
topics. Some of the talks are also given by regional computer
specialists (think Balin, Brown, Geller, Gousha, ...).

This years lunch time panel discussion featured Rik Myslewski,
MacAddict Editor in Chief plus two authors - Tom Negrino and Dori
Smith. The authors are a married couple with a number of Mac and/or
PC books to their credit (check Amazon). An NCMUG coordinator
presented a set of prepared questions to the trio - which they
addressed for about 1h 15m -- followed by 15 minutes of general Q&A.
The general title for this talk was "Future of Mac, a Discussion".
Since the panelists had been given the prepared questions in advance,
responses were direct, detailed, and opinionated.

I thought at the time (as I'm a pathetic note-taker) how nice it
would be to have somebody prepare notes for this session that could
be passed on to the world at large. Back home that night, I was very
pleased to find that somebody had done exactly that and posted them
in a blog at MacDevCtr (MDC). If you don't know about MDC, I commend
it to you highly. It's the extensive Mac-oriented "forum" that
publisher O'Reilly supports -- starting from their basic web address
of
    http://www.oreillynet.com
In addition to MDC, O'Reilly supports a variety of other forums for
various programming systems, applications, etc. If you recall that
many early O'Reilly books featured cover art depicting some of the
world's lesser known animals -- it seems as if many of those animals
now have their own "forums".

Between us, Gayle & I sampled aprx 7 of the 9 break-out sessions -
covering topics such as PhotoShop, Tiger, Automator, .Mac features,
podcasting, iLife 05 (parts of), etc. I could only wish that the guy
who documented the lunchtime panel's talk -- could have done the same
for all of the breakouts -- in that the ones I sampled were every bit
as good as the better programs we're able to have at our local MUGs
and far less commercial than most.

If you'd like an idea of who spoke about what, NCMUG appears to still
have their explanatory material up on their website, which is at
    http://www.ncmug.org
Note that this event was publicized on both the SMUG & SVPAL mail
lists recently via the monthly User Group Bulletin.

Below I include the URL to the blog at O'Reilly's MacDevCtr site that
summarizes the lunchtime panel AND I'm including the main questions
that were asked of that panel.

Cheers, Scott

Question 1: Why did apple really switch to Intel, and should I hold
off on purchasing?

Question 2: If you could have two new features in the next OS, what
would they be and why?

Question 3: Apple has two iPods that are USB only. What does this
mean for Apple Hardware? Is Firewire dead?

Question 4: Do you see any significant changes in software
development for the Mac as opposed to the PC?

Question 5: If I'm a windows user considering a switch, what are the
pros and cons?

Question 6: We now have Tiger and Intel OS update. What's the next
paradigm shift for the next cat?

Question 7: Do you see a shift toward more laptops as they're more mobile.

I have a non functioning P3 tower but I currently have a P3 laptop.  Can you tell me know to get to the RAM please?  Also, is that the name of the website, www.memoryx.com? Interestingly, I go to the local college flea market for some of my needs but they are currently not yet up to speed unfortunately but rarely do I see any PC type stuff there.

Thank you,

For any kind of HFS errors I would always run "fsck" in Single User mode. There's tons of websites that explain how to do this such as http://macs.about.com/od/osx/a/running_fsck.htm   but in short:

- Turn on the power of your Mac and immediately hold down the "Apple" and "S" keys together
- At the black screen with white letters  type "/sbin/fsck -fy" (leave of the quotes)
- Type "reboot" (again leave off the quotes)

Regards,

Chris

Corwin,

There are actually several ways to find this folder. To get a larger
perspective about what all is on your Mac, you might want to click on
your desktop, to make sure you are in 'Finder'. Then use your 'Go'
menu to get to 'Computer'. This should give you a Finder window with
your computer's name in it. Mine says 'Lynda's Powerbook'.

Next click on the icon that will get you a column view. You should
see three columns. The Utilities folder is in the Applications
Folder, though, if the above info is too confusing.

Here's a couple of alternate suggestions for you. i) You might want
to check out PlanetMUG, which is a BBS that is a lot more active than
this list. There's quite a few folks asking and answering questions
about many many topics concerning the Mac. You'd get more people
answering there than there are here. PlanetMUG.org will get you
there. There is a cost, but at $25/year it really is very very cheap
tech support, and I've gotten answers to questions within hours of
asking (doesn't always happen that way, but often does).

ii) Pick up a copy of David Pogue's book, Moc OS X, The Missing
Manual. Since you are running 10.2, Jaguar, you'll want the Second
edition of that book, unless you decide to upgrade soon, to Panther
(10.4).

If you still can't find the Utilities folder from what I've written
above, email me off line (llf4nlp@...), and, if we can find a
time to talk on the phone, I'll talk you through it.

Good Luck, ;-)

Open up a Finder window, go to Applications, and under there you will
find a folder called Utilities. There are a number of neat things in
there... Grab (for screenshots), Grapher (like a graphing calculator),
NetInfo Manager (be careful in there, can do Bad Things if used
improperly), etc.

Laptops are all so proprietary that you need to know not only the
make, but the exact model. Check the manufacturer's Web site for a
service manual. The more enlightened PC makers actually make it easy
to get to the RAM and put the instructions in the User's Guide.
Other are so arcane and complex to service that no one bothers.

Hello A32, SVMUG members and friends,

I will be taking a break this month from our usual Saturday morning tutorial sessions, at the CompUSA training facility at the Blossom Hill store. However, we will  resume on November 12th, 10 AM to noon. The reason for the break is that I plan on being at the RoboNexus exposition that day. If any of you will be there, please let me know and we will join up.

The October 12th Wednesday night meeting will be the usual business meeting, plus I will offer a tutorial on using the system preferences.

Also, be sure to catch the October 17th SVMUG meeting, where John Rizzo will be the presenter. John is the author of Mac Annoyances. Be assured, he is really a Mac fan.

I have seen solutions like hotconference.com, but they are just for

Thanks.

After the Apple announcement on Wednesday, I downloaded the new iTunes 6.0 and bought a video from the iTunes Music Store. It did not play.

This morning when I opened iTunes, there was a message that I needed to download an update to Quicktime in order to play the video. I did not recall seeing any notice of the need to update to QuickTime 7.0.3 yesterday, but easily could have overlooked the notice.

After updating to QuickTime 7.0.3 this morning, my video now plays.

Yes, there should have been a warning dialog when you first started iTunes.  It only shows up once, and it's easy to mistake for one of the preference-setting dialogs.
The videos (and maybe the new audios as well) have a newer FairPlay protection on them.  You need Quicktime 7.0.3 to get the support for your new purchases.  If you're not purchasing new stuff, then you can get by without it, but you'll want it at some point for the other bug fixes that are also in there.

Hello everyone,

A couple of years ago, it was also "no brainer" to predict that
musical artists would leave major labels in favor of being an
independent, marketing their work via iTMS and similar venues. When
the end-user plans to put the music on an MP3 player, why so you need
the intermediate media of CD's? The CD media will not die - but it
will (even now) have a new role: the personally created playlist CD
for use in legacy audio systems, when an MP3 player can not be
properly connected.

If the music can be purchased without needing physical media, you do
not need brick-and-mortar stores. No stores, no purchasing agent. No
purchasing agent, no gala parties and glad handing by the record
label marketeers. The big record label becomes unnecessary.

Touring? Big venue tours were always for marketing, and did not
really do much for the fans or the artists. Except for the Grateful
Dead. Who kind of proved the point about the need for big label
marketing.

New model: practice, practice, practice, write, write, write, record
in an audio engineer's cottage studio, upload to iTMS, get a few
bloggers to mention you, may some internet "radio" streams. What
about over-the-air radio? No longer apropos. MTV? Ahh.. well read on.

Now we have video on iTMS. Choice music videos and a handful of video
dramas, such as "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost". These are heavy
hitters.

Right now, the concept is "if you miss it on broadcast television,
you can catch it the next day on iTMS." But consider the relationship
of a video series production company with broadcast television.

Broadcast TV is based on time slot competition. The choicest slots
have competitive programming of the best programs the networks can
offer (which can be arguably not so good, after all). As a
consequence, many fine productions will be cancelled, because the
show attracted only 20 million viewers instead of 21 million. Each
network (ABC, CBS, NBC, UPN, WB, Fox) will change the offerings,
despite critical opinion, in favor of that show which draws in the
magic "first in time slot." This attracts more advertisers, which in
turn allows the network to charge more for the advertisements shown
during that slot.

So what happens if time slots cease to be important? We have already
seem how TiVo and similar time shifting devices have upset the
commercial networks, to the extent that they have tried to obtain
legislation against time shifting and in particular commercial
skipping. But suppose a video production company has a completely
different venue for their work, one that is not based on
advertisement revenues at all.

Suppose just like musicians, a video production team (writers,
producers, directors, actors, craft staff) could conceive of
projects, e.g. "Firefly", create the episodes, and put it on an
Internet subscription or individual episode sales basis. Let us say
the price per episode is two dollars, and the purchaser gets to
download, keep, and view the episode forever, or until he or she
needs the disk space. (Burn to DVD?) Suppose the production is a nice
one, drawing a loyal viewer base of one million souls, Worldwide. The
gross revenue is $2,000,000 per episode, split between the Internet
retailer (e.g. Apple) and the production company. Suppose they get
$1.5 million per episode - not too shabby. Of course, it may take
awhile to build the loyal fan base, e.g. "Firefly", but a production
company interested as much in their art and craft as well as pure
profit might be willing to ride a production though some lean times
to get to the good.

And suppose two college kids with a Sony FX1 do the same thing,
shooting for a viewer base of 4000 people, with a revenue of $8000
per episode, where they get $6000. Churn out 24 episodes per year, on
shoestring production budgets, and we are talking viable cottage
industry.
