I been Mac user only since 1976, now use iBook into flat monitor. In
recent months I bought a laptop HP Presario PC with XP. I keep this
co-active, alternate, with my Mac, on a KVM switch. I add PC because
PC laptops now cheap, and adequately usable. There are programs that
aren't available on a Mac. I can check cross-platform issues. The
extra screens, keyboard, mouse help enormously with diagnosing
malfunctions. Rudundancy is good. Now I have my own Mac-PC
laboratory. It took me a couple weeks to become comfortable with XP.
OS X is preferable. No contest.

I don't find any user groups that cater to bivalent users like me. I
wouldn't know where to look. Maybe MS or Apple both feel threatened
in facilitating such cross-capability home users. There are issues.
Some applications are offered in both systems, but work acceptably
only in one.

I think you'll find many Mac users are in a similar, dual-OS environment.  My two primary computers are a Windows computer for CAD (and for the random Windows-only applications I absolutely MUST use), and my iMac for everything else.  So, if you have any specific questions, ask away, you may be surprised at the depth off knowledge here!

Hi All,

Before I start digging thru the Apple Support message boards, I was wondering if anyone has had or resolved this problem.

After my iMac G4 sits for a while, it will lose its network connection. The only way I have found to restore it is to reboot. Ive tried swapping cables and ports, but that didnt help. Other devices plugged into the same hub or even the same port do not have a problem.

Any clues? I use a d-link 624 router and the mac has the latest system on it.

Thanks,

-Rob

Hey Rob,

I had the same problem with my macmini hooked up to a
comcast motorola cable modem. I had to keep resetting
the modem and the mac...then just the cable modem... I
replaced the modem and the problem is gone..

Sounds like maybe your just losing your DHCP Lease.  Try opening the Network preferences and under Ethernet and TCP/IP.  Click the button for "Renew DHCP Lease" and see if this start the connection working again.

Some applications such as email will do this automatically from what I understand but some browsers may not.

Just one idea.

Hi All,

Just to let you know for future reference, a lot of users of 10.4.3 are having the exact same problem. Currently the only solution is to reboot or use the terminal window and stop and restart the network adaptor:

sudo ifconfig en0 down

sudo ifconfig en0 up

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=230519

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=231874

I hope apple fixes this problem soon.

FYI, the renew DHCP lease and starting Mail did not work for me.

I've tried to renew the DHC lease but without success.  I have not been able to isolate the problem either to my provider or to the machine. However, the email trick always works.

Hello. The new SVMUG website is up now. You can access it from http://
svmug.org/ . There is a link to the Yahoo! Group up near the top on
the left-hand side.

If you have already created an account but did not receive your
password, do not create another account. Instead, go to http://
svmug.org/user/password and request a new password. During our
testing, emails were not being properly sent out, hence if you're in
this situation you'll need to do this to get your account working. If
you can't figure it out, email me@... and I'll fix it for you.

For those of you who have yet to create accounts, now would be a good
time as any to create one. With an account, you'll have access to
lots of cool things, so be sure to check out the site while logged in
to take the best advantage of the site.

Feedback is welcome; for now, you can reply to this email to submit
feedback. In the future, a forum may be setup for such a purpose.

Enjoy!

Hello A32, SMUG, and SVMUG members,

I am addressing this to whole membership, so you will know about the
new features, and to the user group leaders for action if they wish
to be involved.

O'Reilly is asking if user groups might be able to help them. They
are putting up a link page for interesting podcasts, for the user
group community. If we prepare our own podcasts of an interesting
meeting, O'Reilly will add a link on their page to it, and maybe
feature the podcast (if it is really hot).

Also they are interested in interviews with user group speakers - say
a pre meeting discussion of what will be presented, or a post meeting
recap, or just a general interview. These would go into their online
magazine show "Distributing the Future" .

The quid pro quo is that we (the user groups) have a publicity
channel, and O'Reilly obtains content.

The podcast page is at http://www.oreillynet.com/podcasts .

The Distributing the Future magazine is at http://www.oreillynet.com/
future .

For leaders: under separate cover I am sending you a contact name and
e-mail address for submitting links and ideas.

Hi Tom
I think you need to sign in at yahoogroups and change you email address there.
That is what I did the last time I needed it done.

The 20gig internal hard drive on my Titanium G4 was full. So I went to DT&T in Fremont, which someone had suggested, and had an 80 gig HD installed. Now I want  to put the old internal 20 gig HD into a case and use it as a spare external drive. I bought a SanMax HD 227 combo (USB & Firewire) case. The instructions are not in clear English. It says "All devices must select and jump to Master Mode". Could someone please tell me what this means and how I can do it.
Thanks

If your 20G drive was the only HD in your Macintosh (and probably was, since yours is a laptop), it's already in Master mode. Don't worry about it.

Does anyone in the the SVmug group have an HP printer, still being
sold, on which they are making long-continuous multi-page charts in
the range of 10-20 pages? If so, what model? Any other current
manufacturers? No general recommendations please. I want to hear
from people that are using currently sold printers for z-fold
printing.

HP specs shows that many of their new printers will do banner
printing, 20 pages, z-fold or fanfold.

And the old tractor-drive printers did this z-fold feed reliably.

I know that older HP printers did this. For example the HP845C ,
using a lever that opened up the headroom between input paper
cartridge, so the z-fold joint can turn over smoothly. And printer
driver software options have to

On my OS 10.2 Mac at the time, I tried one of HP's then new
Photosmart printers a couple years ago.

	 http://www.imaging-resource.com/NEWS/1060859603.html

The specified "HP Banner Paper" HPC1820A did not successfully feed.
There was not sufficient headroom for the fan-fold paper, so jamming
and alignment control was not consistent. Printer driver options
were not helpful. I returned the printer.

I decided, if the HP printer manual did not go beyond specifying
z-fold paper to clarify banner printer procedures (as the old manuals
did), I would not buy another HP for the purpose.

Problem is, I don't know another manufacturer that does this well either.

I found one HP Professional Printer that writes about banner printing
in their user manual, but it costs $450. I would be happy with a
black only printer, or minimal color, that does long z-fold charts
reliably.

I have discovered that HP's current DeskJet 6500-6800 line are built
for serious banner printing.

HP's Photosmart printer line are intended for photo buffs, not for
office documents and long charts. Photosmart is about color
fidelity, lifetime, resolution. Banner printing is an afterthought,
and marginal at best. I already have a very nice 5-color plus black
Epson color printer. I don't need another.

NONE of several PhotoSmart printers at Office Max have the
unmistakable z-fold banner icon on their paper supply cartridge.
That includes Photosmart 7850 and Photosmart 8450, both recent
products
.
HP DeskJet is for making office documents in quantity, with one black
cartridge for black or grayscale, and with only a single tri-color
cartridge. For DeskJet, photography is an afterthought. Fine with
me. The models at Office Max are the 6500 series and 6800 series,
which are same external, heavy duty hardware. These are sturdy
machines by comparison to the Photosmart line, with substantial,
thick plastic components. The 6540 with USB is at $130. The 6840 is
with both Wifi and Ethernet networking at $180, worth the price for
us PC-Mac networked users.

Both Deskjet 6500 and 6800 series are built to handle z-fold
properly, and produce functional color pages as well. Probably
adequate for most amateur photos as well. 6500-6800 User Manuals
have instructions for how to banner print: leave off the output bin
when printing banner, exposing a smooth tall flat banner entry
window. This should work reliably, as opposed to the the banner
loading "headroom" defect I had identified with the early PhotosSmart
line previously.

It remains to be seen whether HP's print software for Mac is as
comprehensive as it's likely to be for windows.

I don't believe zapping the parameter RAM is going to help in this situation. If disk writes were taking place when the power went out, you're more likely to have a problem with the hard disk. With that in mind:

Boot the iMac with the Mac OS X DVD that came with it. Do that by inserting the disc and holding down the 'C' key until you see that the computer is booting.

You eventually will see a window appear for the Installer. Do not proceed with the Installer. Instead, look in the File menu (or one of the menus; I think Apple has changed things a bit recently), you should see an option to launch Disk Utility. Launch Disk Utility.

Select the iMac's hard disk and click the "Repair Disk" button. Alternatively, you might click "Verify Disk" first to perform a dry run, determining if Disk Utility can even identify any damage that has taken place.

No guarantees on whether Disk Utility will be able to repair the damage, but this is the place to begin.
