Fellow Smallworlders,

(My apologies to those who have received a similar message via other mailing
lists)

I am compiling a list of examples about how Smallworld's GRID capabilities
have been used to model terrain-type engineering problems. Of particular
interest are any examples that involve hydrological models, soil slope
stability analyses and other non-electrical engineering applications in a
hydro-electric context. The examples, however, do not need to be restricted
to hydro-electric projects.

I would appreciate any examples, stories or simply pointers to other people
who might know.

Hello,

"Smallworld GIS 2.2(1) Release Notes" on page 6-30 mentions
a utility "swdevcaps". I don't find it. Where is it?

Their seem to be a bit of interest in the Legend Class for
Smallworld.
This is something I work on from time to time but is by now way
complete. I am willing to distribute the source but would like to
turn it into a "Freeware" professional class product. With
contributions from other magik programmers and evolve it into a fully
functional class.

The zip file for the module can be downloaded from 9:30 to 5:00 GMT
from:
ftp://midget.mdx.ac.uk
login as anonymous

I can mail it to people who cant access at thses times.

David.

Robert,
I have developed a legend class for displayin legends on screen,
which I guess could be adapted for plots, If you would like to see a
copy mail me. It is not completely finished and provides a legend
for the objects in the main graphics window only.

Hi,

there is a legend in the German Base Model (Smallworld base extension
for German market). I don't know if you could use the legend separatly
from GBM. But contact Smallworld GmbH at support@..., they
will for sure help you. Also you can try to contact isys Software GmbH
(markus@...) to ask for their legend module.

Just my $0.02.

Hi,

I want to add a legend to my drawings and plots.
I've checked out the "Fixed Legend" software
component (anybody using it?), but it's not flexible
enough for my purposes.

Any info is highly appreciated,

Thanks,

Highly relieved it is year 200 compliant, though I'm not sure what operating
system that would have been then : Windows NT (Neanderthal Technology) ?

Seriously, I did some Y2K testing for a client, and came across no problems. The
system level stuff worked ok (trying to type in invalid leap years, etc). One
curious feature was that the client site was set up to accept only dd/mm/yy as a
date format, and disallowed dd/mm/yyyy : however, it got the date right (using a
50 yr pivot rule) and I understand you can change this default.

Of course, customisation (checking that work orders opened in '99 can be closed
in '00) will be site specific, and more interesting.

Hello,

according to a memo available at

http://www.smallworld-us.com/technology/tech_tech_index.asp

Smallworld is fully Year 200 compliant.

This is rather reassuring. Nevertheless, I'd like to know
if anybody has been doing or is planning to do more than
just reading this memo to ensure Smallworld's Y2K compliance
at his or her site?

Please respond directly to the list, thanks,

You could try getting hold of the agent for the text_item. The class
comments on the canvas_agent says "It
will process damage, mouse and keyboard events and send
appropriate methods (where given) to a specified receiver." You may
also have to deal with the note_change and/or handle_event methods.
Sorry this is not more specific, but it should give you some ideas.

"From within a Magik method, given the url 'http://xy.com', how do
launch the users browser to view the associated HTML file?"
If you're running NT, you can try: system.do_command("start
http://xy.com")
This will start whatever program is associated with the file name
extension. Basically whatever you can 'start' from the DOS command
prompt you can do here.

Hope this helps.
Keith.

Hello everybody,

As at least two other members of this list, I'm working on an
electricity application as well.

In the past two weeks, exactly 30 subscribers (from the following
domains, fyi: au(2), ca(3), ch(2), com(5), de(3), edu(1), fi(3),
fr(1), net(1), nz(4), pt(2), th(1), uk(2) ) have joined.
I think this is a good time to explain, why I created this list.

While developing our applications, we often had good ideas most
of which we did not follow through because of either lack of
time or because we ran into technical problems (which would again
take a lot of time to resolve). Nontheless, we developed a couple
of tools that could be of interest to other developers as well.
For example, we wrote a method that generates a report about the
current settings in the authorisation database for all users.
In the same way, you have perhaps written some piece of code
that could be useful to someone else.

So the kind of questions I think appropriate for this list would be:

"Has anybody written a method that generates a report about the
current settings in the authorisation database for all users?"

"I'm interested in the GeoView SOM product. Anybody knows if it is
possible to view a substation schematic in DWG format in an internal
world or can I just connect the DWG file to the geographic world
(the world with universe_id=0 and world_id=0)?"

"From within a Magik method, given the url 'http://xy.com', how do
launch the users browser to view the associated HTML file?"

"Anybody knows of an alternative to the Smallworld 'Report Generator'?"

I believe an associated web site would be ideal to share code snippets.
(David Bolsdon, I'm already interested in your source code for
legends...)
Evidently, nobody will post source code that could be sold for good
money,
but as I said, often you just need that one trick to keep you going.

It's not the intention either to short-circuit official Smallworld
customer support (who is doing in my case a very fine job indeed), but
some questions are just more appropriate for an international audience
such as this list's subscribers.

Of course, as Adam Bennetts suggested, users reviews/impressions of the
various third party solutions would also be extremely welcome.
Other discussions could revolve around system administration issues,
such as "how did you configure the plot driver for this particular
printer?", yet others about data modeling issues or external database
interface issues.

So I hope this list will make our Smallworld-life yet more exiting;-)

Please agree or disagree, but I want this list to be a place where we
can discuss Smallworld-related matters in a professional manner,
see you soon,

Robert

P.S. if you have some information on my last three questions above,
      please let us know

To Adam and all,

I saw a demo last autumn of an application that showed video of the
insides of water pipes that worked in conjunction with the GIS. The
GIS could be used to bring up the video at a certain position, then as
you fast forwarded or rewound the video it would show on the GIS where
you were. If you contact them I am sure they could point up in the
direction of the developers.

I am working on a Smallworld electricity application as well and am
just getting into the SmallworldWeb stuff so I would be interested in
hearing what you have managed to do with it. Being mainly a magik
programmer with some VB3 era knowlegde I have found VBScript somewhat
limiting.

Cheers,

Dave Haddock

Best list of Smallworld sites that I have seen so far!!
Lets get them up on a web page with the aims of the discussion group.

One of the free servers, would be OK as its not going to be a high
traffic site. I would also be willing to put up some of my magik
source for legends etc for testing.

I am willing to spend a _small_ amount of time on this.
Just a standard list, perhaps with a few links to list members home
pages.

David.

official Smallworld sites

Smallworld US
-------------

http://www.smallworld-us.com/
http://www.smallworld.co.uk/

These are the main Smallworld sites. They appear to be mirror sites.
Contain news releases, articles, interviews, product info, etc.
Contain also the Smallworld component catalogue at

Smallworld UK

Smallworld UK has a superb area to download patches and to read the
"Technical Support Bulletins", but you need a password to access it.
I once asked Smallworld for access, but they changed the password they
sent me after one week ;-(

Smallworld Germany
------------------

http://www.smallworld.de/

Some information on Smallworld's german activities.
The only site (?) to have a reference to Smallworld View.

Smallworld Australia

Mainly references to the Smallworld US site, but has some extra info
(for example a document describing the Smallworld partner program at

Hi Steve, an other list memebers.

As you are going to be developing Smallworld Applications a good
oplace to start is the Smallworld Web Site:
http://www.smallworld.co.uk or the US Site on
http://www.smallworld-us.com.

Theres loads of GIS books out now and it would probably be best to
pick one from your own application area.
But a good reccomendation could be:
GIS A computer science perspective by Mike Worboys.

Hope this helps,
Dave.

Hi all,

Hopefully this list will grow... At least I'd contribute questions to keep the
traffic up ;)

For the start, can someone recommend good book or, preferably, WWW site where I
can get some good GIS overview? My background is mostly object-oriented software
development (Smalltalk). I recently moved to GIS arena (just finished Magik
programming course) and need some overall GIS understanding to put things into
perspective.

Cheers,
Steve

Hello,

I'll quite happily join and swell the ranks of this list.

I'm a GIS Technician at TrustPower, an electricity utility in Tauranga,
New Zealand. I've been using Smallworld for nearly two years but have
only recently had the time to start doing some app dev work (previously
I was running the data capture projects and training/supporting users).

At TrustPower we're currently connecting Smallworld to SQL Server (where
our maintenance and works information is to be held) and extending the
SmallworldWeb client.

Cheers,
Adam.

I would like to introduce myself to the sw-gis mailing list.

I am a Research Fellow at Middlesex University in London and have
been working with Smallworld GIS since February 1997. I am
constructing databases for the analysis of Road Traffic Accidents.

My main areas of expertise lie in the areas of the Modelling of Road
networks and am familiar with most areas of the product although I am
getting to grips with the SmallworldWeb Application at the moment.

I look forward to seeing the discussions develop on the list and hope
to be able to help and contribute as much as I am able.

Thanks,
David.
