Monthly DB2 Update
All,
Here are new DB2 related topics over
the past month or so.

Illuminata: IBM's DB2 Database
for Enterprises' Masses
(ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/software/data/pubs/tech-consult/illuminata.pdf)
In this report dated October 4, 2005,
analyst Jonathan Eunice at Illuminata shows why DB2 stands alone for enterprises'
data coordination, integration and analytic requirements.

DB2 Blogs, Discussion Groups
Jay's Note: this
comes from a colleague of mine in the Midwest. I wanted to share
it with you, as I've already pointed some of you to Chris Eaton's blog
for hints and tips.
In addition to the DB2 Developer's website,
more of the IBM DM IT community are starting blogs which could be useful
if our customers are aware of their existence. White papers, useful
scripts, etc are available from these blog sites. Some of the same collateral
that is presented at the IDUG and DB2 Tech Conferences. The IDUG site (www.idug.org)
also has some similar collateral. I think it would be good to let our DB2
User Groups know about these types of sites.
Dwaine Snow: http://dsnowondb2.blogspot.com/
Chris Eaton: http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/database/technology/
Willie Favero (DB2 on zOS): http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/database/db2zos/
A blog search site that can be used
to locate other useful database blogs is at: http://search.blogger.com/?as_q=&ie=UTF-8&ui=blg&bl_url=&x=45&y=3
There are also DB2 discussion groups
that feature discussions among customer DBAs and some IBM developers. 'Listening
in' to these discussions can be very useful in picking up practical hints.
One of my favorite groups is the LazyDBA. The home page is
at: http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/billg/ I subscribe to the DB2 discussion.
I just setup a rule with Lotus Notes to dump the posts within a separate
folder. When I find some extra time I can read the posted problems/solutions.
Another good DB2 discussion group is

SAP Solutions on IBM DB2 UDB V8.2.2
Handbook
(http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg246765.html)
IBM and SAP share a vision for responding
to customers' specific requirements for tighter integration, platform flexibility,
lower total cost of ownership, and improved performance. DB2 UDB V8.2.2
is an SAP-optimized version that uses autonomic computing technologies
specifically tuned to help SAP users streamline installation, improve performance,
and increase availability.
This IBM Redbook provides information
for SAP consultants and SAP system administrators. It includes the latest
DB2 UDB architecture details, SAP-related features and functions, practical
advice on SAP NetWeaver 2004 installations, and DB2 configuration in SAP
environments.
We describe DB2 UDB’s logical and physical
database objects, storage management, SAPs data classes, and space reclamation
strategies, and provide the best practices for intelligent storage subsystems.
We also discuss how to use DBA Cockpit
to monitor your system, DB2 UDB log file management, database backup and
recovery, and high availability and clustered solutions. We introduce the
Problem Description / Problem Source Identification (PD/PSI) methodology,
and the troubleshooting approaches for common problems. Finally, we include
a discussion of the new features of SAP NetWeaver 2004s Business Intelligence
(SAP BI) with DB2 UDB V8.2.2.

On demand Webcast: Boost Performance
of Your XML Data in DB2
(http://www-306.ibm.com/software/sw-events/webcast/W723111L49756O16.html)
This webcast discusses new native XML
storage, indexing techniques, and access methods designed to deliver high
performance for your XML data.
Today, most XML content is stored either
in file systems or in relational or pure XML databases. When stored in
relational databases, the XML data is either shredded or stored as a single
object. These methods have their advantages, but retrieving and updating
this data can be expensive and time-consuming. Most pure XML databases
cannot scale to meet the growing needs. Find out how DB2 plans to solve
these performance problems.

DB2 Universal Database imperative:
Why Oracle isn't ready for the on demand era in e-business
(ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/software/data/pubs/brochures/G507-1468.pdf)
Your data volumes are soaring as your
business moves towards real-time, on demand operations. To keep pace, you
need an enterprise database that not only offers the highest performance
at the lowest price, but also provides a complete view of your business.
It must embrace open standards, rather than fight them. It must scale on
demand while delivering superior availability. It must help organizations
simplify content management, meet regulatory compliance demands, and integrate
and deliver information with on demand ease. And it should be part of a
larger information infrastructure that integrates and adds insight to all
your activities.
Read this study of how Oracle® stacks
up against DB2®. When it comes to the usual decision metrics--reliability,
scalability, manageability, openness, grid computing, price/performance
and flexibility--DB2 beats Oracle hands down.

IBM Single System View Monitor
for DB2
(http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/db2top?Open&ca=daw-flnt-100605)
This tool was developed by IBM technical
field specialists and development labs for the purpose of quickly and efficiently
monitoring a complex DB2 Database Partitioning Feature (DPF) environment.
It uses simple and familiar monitoring user interfaces and combines DB2
snapshot information from all partitions in a DB2 DPF system in order to
provide a unified view of the database.
This monitor for DB2 UDB is specifically
designed for DPF environments. It provides a unified, "single-system
view" of a multi-partition DB2 database that can be used to quickly
identify either partition-specific or global problems in the system. The
user interface is character-based and is similar in nature to many UNIX®
monitoring utilities. IBM Single System View Monitor for DB2 uses
the DB2 snapshot monitoring APIs to retrieve data. It uses both global
as well as partition-specific monitoring information to provide aggregation
as well as quick drill-down capabilities.
