Monthly DB2 Update - Template
All,
Happy New Year!!! Here are new
DB2 related topics over the past month or so.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DB2 UDB for z/OS: Design Guidelines
for High Performance and Availability
(http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247134.html)
Conducting business via the Web and
remaining open for business 24 hours a day, seven days a week is now commonplace.
Customers come in with unexpected workloads through the Web and operate
in a self-service fashion with mostly context-sensitive metadata to guide
them. The strong requirement is availability. However, even with new Web
applications, most of the core business systems considerations still apply,
and performance is critical.
Technology has been accelerating for
mainframe systems. They had become adept at providing business resiliency
accommodating strategic software that has been around for the last several
decades such as IMS™ , DB2® , and CICS® , and they have also become a
host for developing and running Web applications built in Java™ accommodating
the latest business requirements. Businesses need to leverage, extend and
integrate the strategic assets which represent multi-year investments to
support leading edge technology.
DB2 for z/OS® has come a long way and
provides facilities to exploit the latest hardware and software technologies,
accommodating a majority of user requirements. However, special considerations
are required to build high performance applications. If you want to achieve
high performance or high availability, you must use the design, programming,
and operational techniques applicable to DB2.
In this IBM Redbook we discuss many
of these techniques and provide guidelines for database and application
design. We expect the best practices described in this IBM Redbook will
help DB2 professionals design high-performance and high-availability applications.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Implementing High Availability
Cluster Multi-Processing (HACMP) Cookbook
(http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg246769.html)
This IBM Redbook will help you install,
tailor and configure the new HACMP V5.3, and understand the new and improved
features like Dynamic LPAR integration, Virtual I/O, and Disaster Recovery
(DR) configurations.
This redbook gives a broad understanding
of the HACMP and HACMP Extended Distance (HACMP/XD) architecture. If you
plan to install, migrate, or merely administer a high availability cluster,
this book is right for you. Disaster recovery elements and how HACMP fulfills
these necessities are also presented in detail.
This cookbook helps AIX professionals
that are seeking a comprehensive and task-oriented guide for developing
the knowledge and skills required for HACMP cluster design and implementation
as well as for daily system administration. It is designed to provide a
combination of theory and practical experience.
This book will be especially useful
for system administrators currently running both HACMP/ES and HACMP Extended
Distance (XD) clusters who may want to consolidate their environment and
move to a new HACMP V5.3. There is a detailed description of a node-by-node
migration to HACMP/ES 5.3 and a comprehensive discussion about how to prepare
for an upgrade or migration.
(Jay's Note: not exactly a DB2
topic, but a lot of DB2 customers use HACMP in the AIX environment for
high availability of their UDB applications)

Publishing IMS and DB2 Data using
WebSphere Information Integrator: Configuration and Monitoring Guide
(http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247132.html)
This IBM Redbook provides an overview
of IBM's event publishing solution delivered via its WebSphere Information
Integrator Classic Event Publisher and WebSphere Information Integrator
Event Publisher products, and documents the procedure for implementing
a replication and event publishing solution using these products.
The book is aimed at an audience of
IT architects and database administrators (DBA) responsible for leveraging
the WebSphere Information Integrator event publishing capabilities in a
variety of business solutions involving replication and event alert systems.
Using an insurance industry acquisition
scenario involving auto insurance and home insurance companies, this book
documents a step-by-step approach to implementing an integrating Customer
Information Facility (CIF) application, and an Event Alert System application
using WebSphere Information Integrator Classic Event Publisher and WebSphere
Information Integrator Event Publisher.

DB2 Cube Views Version 8.2 Best
Practices
(http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/db2/library/techarticle/dm-0511pay)
DB2 Cube Views is an optional add-on
product to DB2 Universal Database that enhances DB2 to improve OLAP (OnLine
Analytical Processing) performance. DB2 Cube Views helps build the most
cost-effective summary tables in DB2 by leveraging or rediscovering the
metadata in existing OLAP tools.
When you install DB2 Cube Views, metadata
tables are added to DB2, extending the database catalog and making DB2
OLAP-aware. Cube models and cubes are built using metadata imported into
DB2 Cube Views from enabled third-party BI (Business Intelligence) applications,
ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) tools, or modeling tools. The Cube Views
Optimization Advisor is then used to generate SQL to create DB2 summary
tables and indexes. Once these DB2 summary tables are created and refreshed,
SQL queries generated by third-party BI applications are rerouted to these
DB2 summary tables instead of the base DB2 tables. This results in a dramatic
improvement in performance because the data is pre-computed and pre-aggregated.

Understanding locking in DB2 Universal
Database
(http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/db2/library/techarticle/dm-0511bond)
The how and why of locking in DB2 is
one of its least understood features. This article walks through an example
of a common locking scenario and explains what locks are held and why.

1. FROM THE EDITOR: THE BLOG LOG
* Big Iron Bigots in the Blogosphere
Wouldn't that be a great name for a mainframer's blog? It doesn't have
quite the tongue-taunting twist of, say, Bob Loblaw's Law Blog, but it
captures the unabashed admiration for and admitted bias toward the
mainframe I've noticed in many DB2 blogs. Of course, distributed DB2
enjoys a healthy blog presence, too, as do other information
management topics. In fact, a search for DB2 on blogsearch.google.com
turns up more than 26,000 results. Here's a list of the most useful,
up-to-date, entertaining, and surprisingly funny entries I've found.
(Of course, these selections represent my humble opinion. Which blogs
do you read? Drop me a line at db2mag@... to share your
favorites.)
