On Demand Webcast: EAI, ETL, EII,
SOA - Achieving Interoperability Among Multiple Integration Technologies
(http://www-306.ibm.com/software/sw-events/webcast/T247840Y94716N27.html)
In recent years, IT departments have
struggled to integrate application silos they deployed in the late 1990s.
These departments now face "meta-integration" projects
that stitch together multiple integration tools and technologies
into a cohesive integration infrastructure. This process is complex
and little understood, yet fundamental to data-grid and service-oriented
technology practices, as well as real-time and on-demand business practices.
Watch this on demand Web seminar and hear from TDWI and IBM Software
Group to learn how progressive IT departments are achieving interoperability
among multiple integration technologies. Watch the replay.

Product Announcement: IBM
DB2 Data Warehouse Edition V9.1 delivers a next-generation integrated platform
for data warehousing and analytic application support
(http://www-306.ibm.com/common/ssi/fcgi-bin/ssialias?infotype=an&subtype=ca&appname=plc_qmf&htmlfid=897/ENUS206-049)
IBM DB2 Data Warehouse Edition (DWE)
V9.1, the first fully integrated data warehousing platform from IBM, provides
deeper integration of metadata and runtime infrastructure. DWE helps you
achieve information on demand by integrating core components for warehouse
administration, data mining, Online Analytical Processing (OLAP), and inline
analytics/reporting along with the improved performance and usability of
business intelligence (BI) features for real-time insight and decision
making.
Key to this new release is an integrated
Design Studio. The Eclipse-based application opens up interoperability
with IBM's Rational development tools as well as allowing for custom plug-ins.
Tasks that were previously managed in a diverse way are now pulled together
into a single, Eclipse-based console that permits the architecture, design,
coding, and testing of all aspects of your data warehouse from a single
interface. This increases DBA productivity while opening the data mining
and OLAP areas to intuitive control.
DWE is based on the technology of SQL
Warehousing Tool, Intelligent Miner, Cube Views, and Alphablox. The Eclipse-based
Design Studio integrates Rational Data Architect plug-ins for physical
data modeling, together with other DWE components for modeling of warehouse-based
analytic structures.
DWE contains a full, unrestricted copy
of DB2 Enterprise Server Edition database, delivering to users a relational
database system with the ability to handle the most demanding OLTP work
loads. Featured is a loosely coupled, shared-nothing architecture that
permits linear scaling, lack of performance bottlenecks, and the most feature-rich
and fully integrated capabilities IBM has ever offered for enterprise data
warehouses.
Jay's note: with DB2 Data Warehouse
Edition V9.1, IBM is also announcing the withdrawal from marketing of DB2
Cube Views and DB2 Intelligent Miner. Going forward, these products
will be integrated into DB2 Data Warehouse Edition and will not be available
as separately orderable products. See http://www-306.ibm.com/common/ssi/fcgi-bin/ssialias?infotype=an&subtype=ca&appname=plc_qmf&htmlfid=897/ENUS906-047
for details.

1. FROM THE EDITOR: DB2 Magazine Quarter 1 Highlights
* The High Cost of Not Knowing
There's a funny turn of phrase in an article you'll read in this
issue. The writer has just shared an anecdote about being a customer
of four different divisions of one company. Instead of allowing the
company to capitalize on an extensive relationship, the author says
the multiple touch points turn into "a plethora of opportunities for
my financial provider not to know me."
Missed opportunities resulting from an inability to deliver accurate,
complete information where it's needed is a very common business
problem. IBM is betting that its customers are savvy enough to
recognize the potential to get in front of their competitors by
capitalizing on information. That's why it announced a $1 billion
investment in Information On Demand last month. Information On Demand
technologies combined with service-oriented architectures will produce
a "tectonic shift" in the way companies manage information, according
to Ambuj Goyal, general manager of IBM information services.

* Zooming In On Saturn
DB2 version 8.2.2 introduced new features for SAP users that are as
innumerable (and in some cases as invisible to the naked eye) as the
rings of Saturn. An SAP/DB2 customer turns his lens on the features he
expects will exert the greatest pull for SAP shops.
