Redbook - LOBs with DB2 for z/OS:
Stronger and Faster (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247270.html?Open)
The requirements for a database management
system (DBMS) have included support for very large and complex data objects.
DB2 UDB for OS/390 Version 6 introduced
the support for large objects (LOBs): they can contain text documents,
images, or movies, and can be stored directly in the DBMS with sizes up
to 2 gigabytes per object and 65,536 TB for a single LOB column in a 4,096
partition table. The introduction of these new data types has implied some
changes in the administration processes and programming techniques. The
book Large Objects with DB2 for z/OS and OS/390, SG24-6571, introduced
and described the usage of LOBs with DB2 for z/OS at Version 7 level.
Major enhancements for LOB manipulation
have been introduced with DB2 UDB for z/OS Version 8 and DB2 Version 9.1
for z/OS (DB2 9 in this book). These enhancements include performance functions
such as the avoidance of LOB locks and DRDA LOB flow optimization, usability
functions such as file reference variables, FETCH CONTINUE, and the automatic
creation of objects. DB2 utilities provide integrated support with LOAD
and UNLOAD, Cross Loader, REORG, CHECK DATA, and CHECK LOB.
In this IBM Redbooks publication, we
provide a totally revised description of the DB2 functions for LOB support
as well as useful information about how to design and implement LOBs. We
also offer examples of their use, programming considerations, and the enhanced
processes used for their administration and maintenance. We also detail
how SAP solutions use LOBs.
This book replaces the previous book,
Large Objects with DB2 for z/OS and OS/390, SG24-6571, for DB2 Version
8 and Version 9.1.
Redbook - DB2 9 for z/OS Technical
Overview (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247330.html?Open)
IBM DATABASE 2 Version 9.1 for z/OS
(DB2 9 for z/OS throughout this publication) is the thirteenth release
of DB2 for MVS.
It brings improved synergy with the
zSeries hardware and more opportunities to drive business value in the
following areas:
-- Business insight innovations
- Rich hybrid support for relational
and pure XML data.
- Enhanced support for key business
partners that allow you to get more from your data in critical business
disciplines like ERP.
- A brand new user interface for the
Query Management Facility to view and analyze data from either a workstation
client or an ordinary Web browser.
-- Cost savings through optimized innovations
- Streamlined security and regulatory
compliance through the implementation of roles, network-trusted contexts,
and enhanced auditing.
- Performance-boosting innovations such
as load and reorg CPU reductions, improved varying length data, logging,
and insert performance.
- Query management enhancements to make
accessing data even faster and more accurate with indexing improvements.
-- Business resiliency innovations
- Database on demand capabilities to
ensure that information design can be changed dynamically, often without
database outages.
- DB2 restart improvements enhancing
performance usability and availability in data sharing environment.
This book introduces the enhancements
made available with DB2 9 for z/OS. Its helps you understand the new functions,
justify investment in migrating, and plan for exploiting the key new capabilities.
Redbook Draft - DB2 9 for z/OS:
New Tools for Query Optimization (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/abstracts/sg247421.html?Open)
he cost-based optimizer of DB2® for
z/OS® has continually evolved since its initial inception. Support has
included new optimization algorithms, join methods, complex relational
data structures such as star schemas. DB2 for z/OS V8 has provided access
path visualization and a Statistics Advisor function through a brand new
Visual Explain.
DB2 9 for z/OS starts addressing the
challenge of reducing cost of ownership by extending query optimization
through expert based query and workload analysis, server enhancements and
an Index Advisory function. These functions are delivered with new functions
in DB2 9 for z/OS and two tools: IBM DB2 Optimization Expert for z/OS and
IBM Optimization Service Center for DB2 for z/OS.
This paper book helps you understand
the installation, customization and usage aspects of the tools. You are
guided through scenarios of gradually increasing complexity where the functions
of the tools are exploited for query optimization.
An Expert's Guide to DB2 Technology
(by Chris Eaton) - Threaded Engine in DB2 9.5 (http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/database/technology/archives/threaded-engine-in-db2-95-20638)
One of the biggest new features in DB2
9.5 (and one of my personal favorites) is the new threaded engine. In DB2
9.1 and all prior releases on AIX, HP-UX, Solaris and Linux, the DB2 engine
was process based. That means that all functions run in operating system
processes. For example each db2agent is an individual process; all page
cleaners and prefetchers were operating system processes; the log writers,
readers and archivers were all processes.
Now in DB2 9.5 all of these (and more)
are all threads within a single DB2 process. So what's the big deal? Well
having a threaded engine gives every a number of benefits:
* The first being performance
gains since the overhead and context switching is reduced significantly
* Memory savings since
all threads share the same address space and now DB2 has a lower per agent
footprint (around 1MB per DB2 agent savings)
* But the most important
reason in my mind is that it dramatically improves usability in several
key areas
An Expert's Guide to DB2 Technology
(by Chris Eaton) - Automatic Compression in DB2 9.5 (http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/database/technology/archives/automatic-compression-in-db2-95-20027)
I have written a number of blog postings
on Compression in DB2 9.1 (just search my blog by putting the word Compression
in the search box on the top right corner of this page to find them).
Now there are some nice new enhancements
to compression in DB2 9.5.
An Expert's Guide to DB2 Technology
(by Chris Eaton) - Compression of XML in DB2 9.5 (http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/database/technology/archives/compression-of-xml-in-db2-95-20079)
In my last entry I posted about the
new Automatic Compression capability in DB2 9.5. In this posting I wanted
to talk about inline XML as well as compression for XML.
An Expert's Guide to DB2 Technology
(by Chris Eaton) - More Compression Enhancements (http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/database/technology/archives/more-compression-enhancements-20727)
In a previous posting from late last
month I talked about the new automatic compression capabilities in DB2
9.5 as well as the compression for in-lined XML. There are two other compression
enhancements that you should be aware of in DB2 9.5.
An Expert's Guide to DB2 Technology
(by Chris Eaton) - New Administrative Views in DB2 9.5 (http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/database/technology/archives/new-administrative-views-in-db2-95-20528)
I'm just back from IDUG in Athens where
I attended many great sessions and found lots of new material for my blog.
I have already written many blog postings on the new administrative views
in DB2 9 (search my blog for SYSIBMADM). So let's start off with some new
administrative views that I learned about from Jessica Escott's session
on monitoring your database through SQL.
An Expert's Guide to DB2 Technology
(by Chris Eaton) - Simplified DPF backup (http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/database/technology/archives/simplified-dpf-backup-20823)
In previous postings I mentioned that
there were simplifications to the restore and rollforward commands (including
the RECOVER command) that helped to make recovery simpler in DPF. Now in
DB2 9.5, IBM has added simplification to the BACKUP process for DPF customers.

Redbook - Best Practices for SAP
BI using DB2 9 for z/OS (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg246489.html?Open)
Clients want to know how to exploit
the new features of both DB2 V9 and SAP in their SAP BI environments. This
IBM Redbooks publication describes the benefits of DB2 V9 for SAP Business
Information Warehouse. It covers best practices and provides performance
and tuning recommendations.
SAP Business Information Warehouse is
the central reporting tool for almost all SAP business solutions. It is
based on building blocks called InfoObjects that contain data about customers,
sales, and business information. InfoObjects include InfoSources, DataSore
objects, and InfoCubes. The business intelligence solution from IBM and
SAP can help you aggregate and leverage this information, giving you a
system-wide view of your business data and delivering it across your enterprise
to support sound business decisions.
This book describes best practices for
this product on a zSeries platform, and provides performance and tuning
recommendations for loading and querying data. It also addresses general
system administration and troubleshooting.
The audience for this redbook includes
SAP and DB2 administrators. Knowledge of these products and of the z/OS
environment is assumed.
Redbook - Leveraging DB2 Data
Warehouse Edition for Business Intelligence (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247274.html?Open)
In this IBM Redbook we describe and
discuss DB2 Data Warehouse Edition (DWE) Version 9.1, a comprehensive platform
offering with functionality to build a business intelligence infrastructure
for analytics and Web-based applications, and best practices for deployment.
DB2 DWE integrates core components for data warehouse construction and
administration, data mining, OLAP, and InLine Analytics and reporting.
It extends the DB2 data warehouse with design-side tooling and runtime
infrastructure for OLAP, data mining, InLine Analytics, and intra-warehouse
data movement and transformation, on a common platform based on DB2 and
WebSphere. The platform pillars are based on the technology of DB2, Rational
Data Architect (for physical data modeling only), the SQL Warehousing Tool,
Intelligent Miner, DB2 Cube Views, and Alphablox. DWE includes an Eclipse-based
design environment, DWE Design Studio, that integrates the DWE products
(with the exception of Alphablox and Query Patroller) with a common framework
and user interface. The new SQL Warehousing Tool enables visual design
of intra-warehouse, table-to-table data flows and control flows using generated
SQL. DB2 Alphablox is the tool for developing custom applications with
embedded analytics-based visual components. DWE enables faster time-to-value
for enterprise analytics, while limiting the number of vendors, tools,
skill sets and licenses required.
Redbook - DB2 9 for z/OS Performance
Topics (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247473.html?Open)
DB2 9 for z/OS is an exciting new version,
with many improvements in performance and little regression. DB2 V9 improves
availability and security, as well as adds greatly to SQL and XML functions.
Optimization improvements include more SQL functions to optimize, improved
statistics for the optimizer, better optimization techniques, and a new
approach to providing information for tuning. V8 SQL procedures were not
eligible to run on the IBM System z9 Integrated Information Processor (zIIP),
but changing to use the native SQL procedures on DB2 V9 makes the work
eligible for zIIP processing. The performance of varying length data can
improve substantially if there are large numbers of varying length columns.
Several improvements in disk access can reduce the time for sequential
disk access and improve data rates.
The key DB2 9 for z/OS performance improvements
include reduced CPU time in many utilities, deep synergy with IBM System
z hardware and z/OS software, improved performance and scalability for
inserts and LOBs, improved SQL optimization, zIIP processing for remote
native SQL procedures, index compression, reduced CPU time for data with
varying lengths, and better sequential access. Virtual storage use below
the 2 GB bar is also improved.
This IBM Redbooks publication provides
an overview of the performance impact of DB2 9 for z/OS, especially performance
scalability for transactions, CPU, and elapsed time for queries and utilities.
We discuss the overall performance and possible impacts when moving from
version to version. We include performance measurements that were made
in the laboratory and provide some estimates.
Keep in mind that your results are likely
to vary, as the conditions and work will differ. In this book, we assume
that you are familiar with DB2 V9. See DB2 9 for z/OS Technical Overview,
SG24-7330, for an introduction to the new functions.
Redbook - Dynamic Warehousing:
Data Mining Made Easy (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247418.html?Open)
Data mining has evolved from the ethereal
domain of the highly-skilled mathematician to the expert data miner's workbench
tool and ultimately to widely accessible business applications. For decades,
industry and academia have been engaged in far-reaching research and development
of data mining. At the same time, businesses have been leveraging this
research, exploiting a handful of algorithms most useful in finding information
to help resolve business problems.
Recent trends have made these algorithms
and systems, which are rooted in solid research, available to a wide range
of business users in easy-to-use forms. Large numbers of business analysts,
who may not be data mining experts, can now solve high-value business problems
using data mining technology embedded in database-resident business applications.
In this IBM Redbooks publication, we
discuss the methodology and selected techniques of embedded data mining
and show how sophisticated technologies can be used in today's business
environment to create significant business value. All this is enabled by
the IBM DB2 Warehouse (DB2W) data mining capabilities. Using DB2W, we show
examples of using data mining capabilities for such analytic functions
as data modeling, scoring, and visualization. In addition, there are scenarios
and examples that help in understanding where, when, and how to use data
mining. For techniques, technical details, and practical examples, this
is the book you need.
Redbook - Database Partitioning,
Table Partitioning, and MDC for DB2 9 (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247467.html?Open)
As organizations strive to do more with
less, DB2 Enterprise Server Edition V9 for Linux, Unix, and Windows contains
innovative features for delivering information on demand and scaling databases
to new levels. The table partitioning, newly introduced in DB2 9, and the
database partitioning feature provide scalability, performance, and flexibility
for data store. The multi-dimension clustering table enables rows with
similar values across multiple dimensions to be physically clustered together
on disk. This clustering allows for efficient I/O and provides performance
gain for typical analytical queries.
How are these features and functions
different? How do you decide which technique is best for your database
needs? Can you use more than one technique concurrently?
This IBM Redbooks publication addresses
these questions and more. Learn how to set up and administer database partitioning.
Explore the table partitioning function and how you can easily add and
remove years of data on your warehouse. Analyze your data to discern how
multi-dimensional clustering can drastically improve your query performance.
Redpaper - Index Compression with
DB2 9 for z/OS (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpapers/abstracts/redp4345.html?Open)
In data warehouse applications, it is
common to have many very large indexes defined on large tables. It is also
possible that the index spaces exceed the size of the tables upon which
the indexes are based. As one way of helping you to manage the cost of
ownership, in
DB2 9 for z/OS (New Function Mode) you
can choose to compress your indexes and you can define indexes with a page
size larger than
4 KB. All references to the DB2 product
refer specifically to DB2 9, except where the release level is explicitly
mentioned.
Compression has been available for table
spaces on z/OS since DB2 Version 3. This IBM Redpaper explains some of
the significant differences between data and indexes in the way that compression
is managed, as well as a comparison of the performance characteristics.
A limited set of performance measurements
obtained in a laboratory setting are described in this paper, but the main
spirit of this paper is not about specific performance numbers. In other
words, the paper describes how the implementation methodology affects the
performance of both data and index compression, and the authors hope that
the reader does not get too focused on the path lengths of the implementation
or the performance of any specific hardware. User experiences will vary.
It is difficult to predict the impact of index compression on performance,
but in this paper we attempt to provide a methodology that will give some
insight about how to predict the effect of index compression on the CPU
utilization.
blog - Simplified Restore and
Rollforward Command (http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/database/technology/archives/simplified-restore-and-rollforward-command-19608)
For those that have been using DB2 for
some time or those coming from other data servers, you are likely familiar
with the RESTORE command. With RESTORE, you specify the backup image you
want to restore (indicated by the timestamp the backup was TAKEN AT) the
media you are restoring from and the database name you are restoring to.
Then if you want to roll the database forward to end of logs or a point
in time you follow the restore with a ROLLFORWARD command.
What many may not be aware of is that
in V8 there was a simplification of this process. The RECOVER command not
only combines the above two steps into a single step but it also focuses
on what you want to accomplish rather than how to accomplish that task.
What I mean by this is you simply specify at what point in time you want
the database to be at after the recovery and DB2 figures out the best way
to get you there.

samples for data loading, database administration, and reports that are
useful for DBAs. The testing section provides procedures and tips for conversion
testing and database tuning. The laboratory examples are performed under
Oracle 10g and DB2 Version 9. However, the migration process and examples
can be applied to Oracle 7, 8, and 9i.
Redbook - Developing PHP Applications
for IBM Data Servers (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247218.html?Open)
PHP is one of the world's most popular
programming languages for building dynamic data-driven Web applications,
and IBM data servers store a majority of the world's data -- combining
these two technologies is a natural step for any Web developer.
This IBM Redbook provides lots of information
for developers, including code samples for creating PHP applications with
DB2, Informix Dynamic Server (IDS), and Cloudscape. We use the latest PHP
data access extensions including: PHP Data Objects (PDO) and the native
ibm_db2 extension for PHP.
We describe the installation and configuration
details for setting up the IBM data servers and Apache Web application
server for PHP applications. We include Zend Core for IBM, Zend Studio
installation, and configuration.
In addition, we discuss the process
of porting PHP applications from MySQL 5 to DB2 UDB V8.2.
Redbook (DRAFT) - High Availability
and Scalability Guide for DB2 on Linux, UNIX, and Windows (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/abstracts/sg247363.html?Open)
As organizations strive to do more with
less, IBM DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows provides various built-in high
availability features. DB2 further provides high availability solutions
by leveraging enterprise system resources with broad support for clustering
software such as HACMP, TSA, and Microsoft Windows Cluster Server.
This IBM Redbook describes DB2’s high
availability functions and features focus on High Availability Disaster
Recovery (HADR) in OLTP environment. This book provides detailed discussion
on HADR including setup, configuration. administration, monitoring, and
best practices.
We discuss how to configure cluster
software HACMP, TSA, and MSCS with DB2 and how to use these products to
automate HADR takeover.
DB2 also provides unprecedented enterprise-class
scalability to 32-bit and 64-bit Linux, UNIX, and Windows platforms. We
introduce DB2 Database Partitioning Feature covering installation, configuration,
and scaling a database partition.
Redbook (DRAFT) - Index Compression
with DB2 9 for z/OS (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/abstracts/redp4345.html?Open)
In data warehouse applications, it is
common to have many very large indexes defined on large tables. It is also
possible that the index spaces exceed the size of the tables upon which
the indexes are based. As one way of helping you to manage the cost of
ownership, in DB2® 9 for z/OS® (New Function Mode) you can choose to compress
your indexes and you can define indexes with a page size larger than 4
KB. All references to the DB2 product refer specifically to DB2 9, except
where the release level is explicitly mentioned.
Compression has been available for table
spaces on z/OS since DB2 Version 3. This IBM® Redpaper explains some of
the significant differences between data and indexes in the way that compression
is managed, as well as a comparison of the performance characteristics.
BLOG Entry - Chris Eaton - New
ROLLFORWARD option in Viper 2 (http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/database/technology/archives/new-rollforward-option-18171)
Some of the new features in DB2 Viper
2 will probably never get much press attention or even be in a presentation
at a conference because they are pretty small. But they can sure
help make your life easier. This is one example of such a feature.
DB2 has supported online backups for
many years. To restore those backup images you must roll forward
to at least the end of the backup time to ensure the database is consistent.
In a DPF environment if you want to recreate the entire database
you have to roll forward all partitions at least to the end of the most
recent backup. Finding that time and putting it into the rollforward
command can be a pain. Now there is a new option on rollforward to
take you up to the minimum recovery time for the database. Simply use
DB2
ROLLFORWARD DATABASE dbname TO END OF BACKUP
Optionally if you are using DPF you
can add
ON
ALL DBPARTITINNUMS
to the end of the command and it will
roll forward on all partitions to a consistent point in time (the minimum
recovery time).
It's a small addition but sometimes
it's the little things that go unnoticed but that make life just a bit
easier.
BLOG Entry - Chris Eaton - Viewing
HADR status through SQL (http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/database/technology/archives/viewing-hadr-status-through-sql-17733)
Based on the number of questions and
comments in my initial HADR posting I know that many of you are using HADR
for high availability or disaster recovery. If you are using HADR, here
is an administrative views that you can use to monitor your cluster via
SQL.
The view is called SYSIBMADM.SNAPHADR
and gives you a SQL interface to monitor your HADR cluster. In this view
you can see the primary and standby configuration information like the
hostname, port numbers, role, syncmode, etc. As well you can see the monitor
information like which log file and log page each server is currently working
on, what state the pair are in (i.e. PEER, REMOTE CATCH UP, etc) as well
as the current log gap (if any) between the two servers.
As an example, you can monitor the connection
state and the log gap with
SELECT HADR_STATE, HADR_LOG_GAP FROM
SYSIBMADM.SNAPHADR
One thing you may want to do is run
the following query every 5 minutes over the course of a single day. This
will give you a profile of you cluster on a typical day showing you the
number of concurrent connections and the HADR log gap between the two systems.
The log gap should be close to zero if the standby is able to keep up.
Don't worry if it's not exactly zero even if you are using sync mode because
the reports of where each database is in the log file are not taken simultaneously
so when compared there may be a small gap. If you find a log gap appearing,
you can add a lot of detailed information from the SNAPDB view to isolate
any issues (note you need to first create the table that will store the
snapshot info which I call MYHADRMONITOR)
INSERT INTO MYHADRMONITOR
SELECT D.SNAPSHOT_TIMESTAMP, HADR_STATE,
HADR_CONNECT_STATUS,
HADR_PRIMARY_LOG_PAGE,
HADR_PRIMARY_LOG_LSN,
HADR_STANDBY_LOG_PAGE,
HADR_STANDBY_LOG_LSN,
HADR_LOG_GAP,
APPLS_CUR_CONS
FROM SYSIBMADM.SNAPDB D, SYSIBMADM.SNAPHADR

What is IBM Single System View Monitor
for DB2?
This tool was developed by IBM technical
field specialists and development labs for the purpose of quickly and efficiently
monitoring a complex DB2® Database Partitioning Feature (DPF) environment.
It uses simple and familiar monitoring user interfaces and combines DB2
snapshot information from all partitions in a DB2 DPF system in order to
provide a unified view of the database.
How does it work?
This monitor for DB2 UDB is specifically
designed for DPF environments. It provides a unified, "single-system
view" of a multi-partition DB2 database that can be used to quickly
identify either partition-specific or global problems in the system.
The user interface is character-based
and is similar in nature to many UNIX® monitoring utilities.
IBM Single System View Monitor for DB2
uses the DB2 snapshot monitoring APIs to retrieve data. It uses both global
as well as partition-specific monitoring information to provide aggregation
as well as quick drill-down capabilities.

Redbook - DB2 for z/OS Administration
Tools for Enhanced Change Management (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247441.html)
A database administrator (DBA) has a
challenging job trying to maintain databases in today’s nonstop 24x7 environments.
This challenge is compounded by the complexity of database structures and
the time pressure of trying to be up again as soon as possible without
making mistakes.
When business expands, several DB2 subsystems
have to be maintained, such as multiple development systems, function test,
acceptance test, volume test, and production systems. Often changes have
to be implemented across multiple DB2 subsystems.
The two IBM DB2 for z/OS tools that
help database administrators to implement database changes are the DB2
Administration Tool and the DB2 Object Comparison Tool.
In this IBM Redbooks publication we
show how, with Version 7.2, the two tools offer an enhanced Change Management
function to manage and track the changes of your DB2 objects. We show how
the tools help you define changes, resolve conflicts, register the changes,
analyze the changes to generate a work statement list that applies the
changes, and then run the changes in the correct order. The Change Management
functions also allow you to back out completed changes and facilitate the
management of a convenient audit trail.
This book contains a major update to
the Change Management functions described in DB2 for z/OS Tools for Database
Administration and Change Management, SG24-6420-01.
Redbook - Database Partitioning,
Table Partitioning, and MDC for DB2 9 (Draft) (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/abstracts/sg247467.html)
As organizations strive to do more with
less, DB2 Enterprise Server Edition V9 for Linux, Unix, and Windows contains
innovative features for delivering information on demand and scaling databases
to new levels. The table partitioning, newly introduced in DB2 9, and database
partitioning feature provide scalability, performance, and flexibility
for data store.
Redbook - Best Practices for SAP
BI using DB2 9 for z/OS (Draft) (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/abstracts/sg246489.html)
Clients will want to know how to exploit
the new features of both DB2 9 for z/OS and SAP in their SAP BW environments.
This IBM Redbook will describe the benefits of DB2 V9 for SAP Business
Information Warehouse. It will cover best practices, and provides performance
and tuning recommendations.
SAP Business Information Warehouse is
the central reporting tool for almost all SAP business solutions. It is
based on building blocks called InfoObjects that contain data about customers,
sales, and business information. InfoObjects include InfoSources, ODS objects,
and InfoCubes. The business intelligence solution from IBM and SAP can
help you aggregate and leverage this information, giving you a system-wide
view of your business data and delivering it across your enterprise to
support sound business decisions.
However, this structure can lead to
slow performance if the system is not set up and managed according to good
database principles. This redbook describes best practices for this product
on a zSeries platform, and provides performance and tuning recommendations
for loading and querying data. It also addresses general system administration
and troubleshooting.
The audience for this redbook includes
SAP and DB2 administrators. Knowledge of these products and of the z/OS
environment is assumed.

1. FROM THE EDITOR
* DB2 Magazine gets the community spirit
Some of you have noticed that the first DB2 Magazine issue of the year
is a few months later than usual. If you've visited DB2mag.com in the
past week, you've probably guessed why: We've been busily working out
the next chapter in the magazine's history. The latest issue
(available in print and online) includes great how-to articles on data
governance, DB2 security, Informix SQL scripts and performance tuning,
plus coverage of IBM's FileNet acquisition and the Informix Dynamic
Server (IDS) "Cheetah" beta program.
But we're trying something new, too: We're asking you to get involved,
share your best ideas, comment on the new blog (eventually, blogs),
give feedback, and generally share your opinions and experience. Help
make the new DB2 Magazine Community Wiki the best online technical
resource for IBM information management outside of IBM itself. Share
those ideas and tips you've been trying to get into the print magazine
for years. Contribute all that pent-up advice to the community.
You can help make this Web site the resource you want it to be. What
are you going to make of it?

3. ASKED AND ANSWERED
* How do you clone a portion of a database?
Let's say you want 10 percent for the overall size; would you take 10
percent from a primary file and then make sure all the referential
integrity is maintained for all the other files? Some files would need
to be copied in entirety.

Rational Data Architect is an enterprise data modeling and integration
design tool which works with all the major databases, including Informix,
DB2, Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, Sybase, and many others.
Some examples of its capabilities include:
Create logical and physical data models.
Discover, explore and visualize the
structure of data sources.
Discover potential relationships and
identify relationships (through mapping) between disparate data sources.
Compare and synchronize the structure
of two data sources/targets.
Analyze models and data sources for
conformance to enterprise standards.
New release features integrations with
IBM Rational Software Architect, Eclipse 3.2 and IBM Information Server;
additional mappings and expanded support for XML, DB2 V9, Sybase, Informix
and MySQL.
