No, what I said was that Synchronet does not currently support birthdates
beyond the year 1999 or before 1900. If/when a user who is born on or after
the year 2000 logs onto your BBS (probably not before the year 2010), their
age would be computed incorrectly unless someone fixes this before then.
Rob
I just completed about a 10 minute test.
I downed all nodes, Netmodem, and my other servers. Reset my for 12-31-99
11:59:50 pm.
I watched to pc click over 2 2000. I then ran Netmodem and node 2. I
telneted into it and logged on. My account was alive and my age was correct.
So I reset the date for 9/19/2001, and logged in as a new user. Posted a
message, logged off. Then I logged in as sysop, header information was
correct,
date for message and user base was correct. Sync showing the year 00, but the
real neat things was the birthdate and age were correct.
I seem to remember Rob saying that Sync was y2k compliant, but the user
base was not, but would work.
That was the all I did, I then restored to bbs from the backup,
not wanting to go backwards in time having been logged on in 2001.
I did not try doors or anything but messages and userbase. Also Syncedit
quit working, but the internal editor worked fine.
I think that The Talamasca in and of itself is ready for whatever is to
come.
Any thoughts on this Rob?

No, I have not yet received it. I was beginning to wonder why it
was taking so long. How did you ship it, and to what address?

I was browsing the synchronet chat board today ...
http://www.burnettweb.com/synchronet/wwwboard.html
...and I came across a message about NetXpress which mentioned a
source for free uucp service:
http://www.bungi.com/bungi.html
It might be worth checking out. I just retired my copy of
NetXpress (partly because my ISP discontinued support for uucp),
but it gave me a number of years of very satisfactory service.
It's a very easy program to install and maintain. Running under
OS/2 it is an extremely stable program. I think it's probably the
easiest way to add e-mail and mailing list capability to
Synchronet. And using VMODEM you can use the built-in uucico
dialer to make telnet connections, which would enable you to use
the bungi.com uucp service via telnet, thereby avoiding long
distance phone calls.

The problem is that, although your telnet address works
perfectly, I got an error message when I tried the above website
address.

I didn't know till after writing this that you were referring to orders I
thought that there may have been changes, new release, or something like
that...
I would like to know more about it though... beyond your website....
Well The Talamasca just went thru a rough 3 hours. My ISP in the
throes of upgrade regonfigured my IP number to 206.190.157.250. The left a
message on my machine.
Well I got home, and the Talamasca had already figured out it had
a new IP and was awaiting calls. The problem was talamasc.madnet.net was
still attached to the old ip which is no longer a telnet server.
Anyway, that was resolved in the last few minutes and
talamasc.madnet.net is once again my valid address.
Just so everyone knows, if The Talamasca appears to have
disappeared just check my web site. www.madnet.net/~tomyknor. A new address
will appear up there in emergencies.
As it ends up, we come out all the better. I am once again
routed thru digital switches with the teleco, and we now have a stable
50000 for a connect rate. This also seems to have fixed my dropped carrier
problem as well as a password error that would sometimes defeat Dunce.

This is really quite a simple project. I suggest you study your current
command shell. Most of what you need is already there, just needs some
tweaking. I was tweaking my command shell within the first week of running
Synchronet, and this was with no programming or Baja experience. It takes
some time and effort on your part, but just learning how to do it yourself
will probably be easier than trying to explain what you want to do to
someone else.
Log on to The Talamasca. Create an account and let me know you are
a Sync sysop. That gives you access to all the Dove Net forums. Then when
you are trying to get a piece of Baja code to work, you will have a bunch
of great Sync Sysops to help answer your question.

I need help in modifying the main menus on my BBS but am having trouble
finding the time to learn BAJA. I really want to get my BBS reopened but the
menus must be fixed first!
We need the BBS to display 2 ANSI screen to the user each time they leave the
Main menu. The first screen is to display a screen announcing the area of the
BBS they are going into (doors, files, messages, logout, whatever) the second
is to be a randomly selected artwork.
Not knowing if it could even be done I emailed Rob Swindell, who said that it
could be by modifying the main menus only. After the user selects where to go,
the BBS should swap out to a subroutine specifically for that selection,
display the first screen, then cut to a subroutine that selects the random
artwork from a general art directory, display that ANSI and then return to the
main BBS program and move the user into the selected area.
Can anyone tell me how to quickly set this up?

It does 3 things, actually..
1: it continuously scans your netmail directory for internet e-mail to be sent
2: is a server on port 25 (smtp) that will get incoming mail, then run your
echmail
importer
3: is an identification server (pidentd)
It works great here under os/2, i've been running it on the ozone bbs for the
past 3
years. some people have reported that it dies after mail comes in, but I havn't
been able
to reproduce this problem on a win95/osr2.5 machine.
Its free! =)
btw, anyone experiancing the problem with mserver in windows, please send me all
the
files required to reproduce the problem and I'll try & fix the bug asap!

I notice that Enigma has put an e-mail server for BBSs on his
website. Enigma, if you are reading this, would you like to say
a few words about this -- what it can do and how it works?

Ok here is the top portion of the code I am having trouble with.
This is the main menu and web listings menu for websites.
The problem is this. Hitting a key that is not listed as a command key just
reprints the menu, and does nothing else. This works perfectly on both menus,
except hitting 'n'. If I hit n, the first time it prints the statement about a
wrong key, then gives the hit a key pause. At this point if you hit n
again, it
will then print the command prompt, but not the menu.
The same thing happens if for example you hit a q which is an invalid
key. It will print the wrong key statement and pause. If you hit any key
except
n it will clear the screen and reprint the menu and prompt just like it
should.
If you hit an n it clears the screen and reprints just the prompt.
To see this bug in action logon to The Talamasca
talamasc.madnet.net
and run Internet Resource Listing from the main menu.
Here is the code...

Seeing as how you are new here, you must have an interest in Synchronet. If
so you need to stop by The Talamasca and make yourself known to the Sync
community.

Hi everyone, theres a new version of mtelnet for OS/2 and windows on
http://ozbbs.ml.org/ !!
This new version fixes a ton of bugs since beta4 =)
For those of you who don't know what mtelnet is, well, its a telnet client to
replace those crappy default telnet clients. mtelnet looks and feels just like
and oldschool terminal program, it has a phonebook, backscroll, zmodem and
tons of other neat things. Its freeware, too! =)
Hope everyone has had a joyous Christmas, and if Christmas isn't your
thing, a really super excellent day!
Just thought I'd take a moment to say h'lo to everyone <virtual wave> and
may the new year bring prosperity <sp> and happiness to all. May Martha's
Vineyard actually become MARTHA'S Vineyard and Kevin Mitnick get connected
(or at least give the guy a laptop and a copy of Doom); may road rallies
come back to Barbados; may Smeg be crowned Quake demigod of the millennium
and write a really bitchin' Baja mod for it; may "Weedpuller" become a
household name; may Frank be granted twelve
new 450 mHz quads; may a balloon full of Moosehead land in Craig's
backyard; may Steve edge out MSNBC and also develop a new HTML standard
that recognizes Ctrl-A codes; may Tom help him with this and earn enough in
dividend cheques to build a car and race it in road rallies in Barbados (or
at least sit on the beach and listen for the results on shortwave radio);
may Chuck become president of the United States; may Angus head a branch of
SETI and be the first to discover that we are not alone and that they
really think BBSing is cool; may Rob and the band cut a CD that is an
international sensation; may everyone that I've missed not be pissed
that they were missed...
Happy Holidays everyone!
Sidenote: The Serial Port BBS has been running for the past few weeks on
the ol' 5x86 board running DOS 5 and Desqview. Been about as stable as
nitroglycerin during an earthquake but at least we're online and answering.
:)
Can't get Dove yet but hopefully the next day or so will change all that.
Take care all, UCD
Hi Lance,
Congrats on the expansion plans.
Happy Holidays to all!
