Hi, what's the news on getting moved to sourceforge ?, I have a couple
of ideas i want to work on soon, and it'd make sense to get back to a
single code base first.
Thanks
Simon
Using 05232003 by rOD - could be the difference. Have you tried just removing the directory?

My latest efforts:
http://www.groovymother.com/archives/2003/05/23/syndirella_dragn.html
I hope to have a go at creating folders/trees and stuff over the (lovely
long) weekend.
In other news, there *is* now a SourceForge project for Syndirella, but I'm
wanting to hear back from Dmitry before I suggest we start using it.

Fantastic. Thanks rOD for doing the SourceForge bit, and thanks to both
for working together on a single codebase. :)
I'll contribute as and when I get time.
Err... Anyone know a good way to get bugs.syndirella.net data into
SourceForge tracker? Even better-- anyone seen bugs.syndirella.net up
lately?
I -think- I remember that Dmitry was taking an extended vacation
now-ish, but I'm not sure... Perhaps his server just crashed while he
was gone?

Simon,
Thanks for the contribution. I haven't DL'ed yet, but support
for gzip support and IBlogExtension are both good to have. I'm less
enthusiastic about xhtml:body, but hey, I'm not doing the work. :)
Did I read correctly [1] that this is a fork? Was there
something Dmitry didn't like about the changes, or is he simply
unresponsive? I see that home.yole.ru is down. It'd be a shame to fork
the code, if we could simply improve upon the existing app under one
effort. RSS has enough forks as it is.
BTW, it's currently spelled Syndirella-- It's a pun on
Cinderella not just using Syn for syndication, but "dir" for
directory... I think. I'd have no major issue with renaming it, but I
wanted to make sure your (mis)spelling wasn't just an accident.
Thanks,
Jeremy

The change from HttpWebRequest to WebRequest introduced a serious
flaw... now Syndirella does not sense the progress of the connection, and
always keeps it open, even though the actual request long has timed out.

Did you add devenv.exe.manifest file to VS.NET?
If so just add Syndirella.exe.manifest to the Syndirella directory OR
remove devenv.exe.manifest from VS.NET directory.

Sorry to join the mailing list with a tedious question.
I'm running Sydirella from source and have made some modifications to
it.
Its all going fine on that front, but what's not working is the loading
of
the images into the image lists (a piece of code I haven't touched)
I get the following error
An unhandled exception of type
'System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException'
occurred in mscorlib.dll

invocation.
at Line 842 of MainForm.cs :
this.imageList1.ImageStream =
((System.Windows.Forms.ImageListStreamer)(resources.GetObject("imageList

ageStream")));
And everywhere else an image list is used.
I'm a C++ and java developer normally and only know enough about C# and
.NET
to be dangerous, but I'd really appreciate some help sorting this out
because this problem aside I've quite enjoyed messing around with the

Well, I don't really like the remoting idea, because that locks people into
a .NET world, when you could almost as easily provide a webby format (call
it RSSS), which is open to any platform.
Also, Syndirella uses serialization as it's primary data store, and I've
never been comfortable with that. Serialization is very cool, and is a
cleverly cheap way to deal with data persistence problems, but it's a closed
format, and that makes me nervous.
I guess I prefer open solutions whenever it's cheap and easy to do so.
But besides that, I appreciate the comment about just using Sys.XML. I
guess I was thinking about making the RSS library a shield from the
volatility of the format. What I mean is, there are a variety of RSS
flavors, and for the most part, the sematics of RSS .9 are preserved.
The library I have in mind would consume any RSS flavor (including
ultra-liberal parsing), and provide a simple interface to the core
semantics, essentially tossing anything that wasn't "core". OK, that sucks
as versions meaningfully extend the information in RSS, because people are
supplying more info than the libary is going to expose.
With that in mind, I'd plan on extending the interface to include more
semantics, but still shield the client from worrying over which version of
RSS that was received, or indeed, if it was even RSS! Web feeds are a big
win in Syndirella.
The idea here would be to convert whatever data is originally received into
a sort of canonical RSS. If you've ever seen [canonical XML], you can
appreciate how this can simplify what the core parser needs to know about.
The state of RSS -is- pretty bad, though. You've really got a bunch of
different formats masquerading as "RSS", with various versions offering
technical variety, but little functional difference.
The consumer doesn't care about what the format is, as long as it gets them
site update information. RSS as a format has not had clear goals, leading
to seemingly-arbitrary, definitely odd, design decisions. I'm frankly
stumped over the decision to include [xhtml:body], as it pretty well
requires browser integration, and that doesn't seem a given to me, at all.
(Gears shifting)
There -is- value in stability and recognition, and I think that's what Dave
Winer was pointing out when he complained of people diluting the recognition
of the orange [XML button]. It wasn't about ego-- it was about utility. If
we want RSS to be useful to the masses, we can't count on them knowing what
RSS is, or liking your pretty RSS button.
Most people simply don't care. They just want it to work.
Given, the choice of orange and the label "XML" was probably overly
noticable and overly broad, but it is what it is. White text with
transparent background and anti-aliased dark halo, saying "News" might have
been better. But recognition was the point-- not "look at Dave Winer's ugly
button".
And, of course, there's the point that Radio almost certainly gave RSS the
critical mass it needed to explode into the value it has today, and that's
worth something.
To close, I -do- think the following would be useful:
0) A site for RSS efforts to be organized, and clear goals for the format
to be defined. Ad-hocracy is adding client complexity in this case.
1) An RSS library to handle different formats with same/similar semantics
2) Using RSS to aggregate RSS channels (RSSS)?
3) A simple RESTian HTTP server to get and put an RSS feed, with minimal
server requirements.
-Jeremy

I think it might be worth working on a core reader library, which
handles on the non-UI messiness that is RSS. I'd want
to put out feelers to the other .NET reader projects to see if they think that's
worthwhile, and indeed, if there is enough requirements overlap to make it
practical.
Using System.Xml is actually the best
way to go because when things change, you don¡Çt have to re-engineer the
entire library. Just adapt your UI to new stuff in the DataSet you pull in from
the XmlDocument.
