Dear TagMaps users

TagMaps will be offline on March 4 and 5 (PDT) while we upgrade our
servers and move them to a different facility. You will not be able to
use the TagMaps website, tag API or flash badge during this time.
Normal service will be resumed on March 6, 2009. We apologize for any
inconvenience that this may cause.

Happy TagMapping

Most of what we do in World Explorer / TagMaps is described in the paper
Shane Ahern, Mor Naaman, Rahul Nair, Jeannie Yang. World Explorer: Visualizing Aggregate Data from Unstructured Text in Geo-Referenced Collections.
http://yahooresearchberkeley.com/blog/category/publications/

Indeed, we do follow step B I listed below, using a "search by relevance and bounding box" to get the photos on the right pane. Yes, it seems to work better than tag search. A lot of it has to do with the bounding box restriction (see the paper "How Flickr Helps Us Make Sense of the World" for some actual evidence that the bounding box improves things).

As to your second question, our related tags are simply the other high-scoring tags in the same bounding box. Yes, using some correlations and better filtering may help!

I was hoping of jumping from (a) to (c) with the specific images that
TagMaps has recognized as relevant to that tag. At least from
appearances in the flash app, it seems that the number (and quality)
of images that appear for a specific tag seem to have been refined
from what I might find by doing a direct tag search via the Flickr
interface. Is this true or are my expectations just lower because I'm
used to unassisted browsing by tags?

In another direction entirely, can you tell me if you do any
correlation between the tags suggested by TagMaps and the tags that
Flickr seems to statistically predict with it's "getRelated" function?
(sorry I would provide the exact url for clarity, but it seems the
interface is down) By this I'm wondering if you leverage the tags
that you've found from one geographical area in TagMaps versus the
tags that may be statistically related to give the smaller list that
appears when I hover over an area. If not, how _do_ you create that
smaller list of suggested tags ;) ?

Thanks again and I look forward to working with this great data.

Eric

Great question and great idea! The way we get images from Flickr in
the TagMaps application, right now, is pretty "dull": we just use the
Flickr API to get photos with the selected tag from the immediate tag
area (using Flickr search API you can specify a bounding-box-and-text
query). So, what you'd want to do it:
a. Get the tags for each region/zoom level using the TagMaps API
http://developer.yahoo.com/yrb/tagmaps/
b. Get (however many) images for each tag on the map using a
text-and-bounding-box query from Flickr:
http://flickr.com/services/api/flickr.photos.search.html
c. Sort the photos however way you like :)

Does this make sense? Good luck, and let us know what happened!
Also, I am sure you are aware of the TagMaps widget you can use to
re-create the tagmaps experience? It's also available from
http://developer.yahoo.com/yrb/tagmaps/

Mor

p.s. You may want to check our publication page where we were playing
with similar ideas using image analysis:
http://yahooresearchberkeley.com/blog/category/publications/ (see "How
Flickr Help us...").

Hi,

Great work on this problem, kudos to your entire team. It's apparent
that your system does a great job of cleaning up/removing extraneous
images from flickr and provides a more succinct view of a
location-based tag.

Is it possible to get a data API call that will retrieve the relevant
images for a tag -- after they've been processed by TagMaps? I am
looking at research steps to re-order these images to get exactly what
a user is interested in and perhaps glean a little more information
about relevant tags from this visual cluster.

I'm trying to analyze how we can improve tag recommendation based on
TagMaps for a specific tag either with a content (image) analysis or
tag frequency analysis. Unfortunately, I can't access the image IDs
that popup in the handy flash explorer. So far, it looks like I have
to go back to the unstructured flickr data and start the process
myself (yuck!). Is there a way to get to these images over the API?
I can't count the ways that this could help improve location-based search.

Thanks for any advice!
Eric

Hello,
We already considered the quick fix solution and this
is what we are going to do. Even with ASCII support,
TagMaps is really a great tool. Thanks for making it

Hey Adrian! Yes, we have noticed that this is the case. For now, it
seems like we don't do a good job supporting unicode characters.
Unfortunately, I am not sure when we'll be able to fix that - stay
tuned... Quick fix is to map non-ASCII to ASCII (Château =>
Chateau)... I know, it sucks :(

Hello,
I am trying to develop an application based on TagMaps and I would
like to know if it is possible to display non-ASCII characters. I have
tags containing other characters but these last seem to be simply
ignored. For example Château de Versailles est affiché comme Chteau de
Versailles.

I found that the map disappears when it's clicked and then a mouse
scroll wheel is used. With JS you get an error screen and must refresh
the page. With AS the map returns fairly quickly. Try it on the
examples in the API manuals.

Is there a fix in the works?

Hi folks,
Good news on this -- yesterday we announced on the Yahoo! Developer Network blog that the embeddable version of TagMaps now makes a JavaScript callback to the page where you have it embedded. In the callback function, you can implement JS code to do whatever you want -- the TagMap will pass the tag selected by the user, along with the tag id (the guid field in the tag feed xml), the lat/long of where the tag is placed on the map, as well as a bounding box of the current map view (upper left and lower right corner lat/long). See the Badger Callback documention for more details.

I build a demo of this functionality, which I like to call the San Francisco Neighborhood Explorer, which shows the neighborhoods of San Francisco as tags on the map. Note that I created a custom tag feed using a static xml document  as my tag feed, as opposed to a dynamic feed that supplies tags according to the lat/long of the current map view, as the default tag feed does. A static tag document is limited, but it is a lot easier to create than a dynamic web service feed, and may be a good way to go if you just want to show tags for a single city or single zoom level. See the custom tag feed documentation  for more details on creating your own feed.

So with new callback feature, when the user selects a neighborhood tag, the TagMap calls my JS function, where I implemented code that looks up info about that neighborhood from Wikipedia, Craigslist, Flickr, Y! Video, and Y! Answers. I use JSON for the Web service calls, and then display all that info on the page. And by the way, I made heavy use of Yahoo! Pipes, an extreemly cool new service that lets you remix and rewire any Web service. If you are building mashups, you need to check this out.

We hope this feature gives you what you need to create  some cool new apps, we're looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Hi,

I've been playing with the TagMaps API and I've started building a demo with it.
I'd really like
to have images displayed when users highlight a tag, but I understand that this
functionality
hasn't been released yet in the public version of the widget.

Is it possible to somehow capture which tag is being higlighted, e.g. using
Javascript, so that
I could then implement some other mechanism to display images for that tag?

Thanks,

Patrick

Hey Mike -

You're right - the embedded object currently does not link out to the
photos. We do use the embed as some kind of a teaser, of course, but
we thought it would be interesting for visitors to any page or blog,
even without the photos. Anyone can move around the map for NYC, for
example, to see the interesting tags that show up and understand the
area better.

See other questions on this group; hopefully this prototype will
evolve to allow anyone to use it for many different purposes, building
all kinds of visualizations and information services on top of the
embedded object.

Hi Mike

The flickr.photos.search method
(http://www.flickr.com/services/api/flickr.photos.search.html) in the
Flickr API can take a bbox paramter that will return photographs
within the specified bounding box.

Thanks for the fast response. I did find MY mistake and fixed it, and
the tags are showing.

Now that I have it up there and the tags are showing, I am trying to
figure out what exactly this will be good for. How do you get the
information to display for the tags that are shown? I mouse over and
click them and nothing happens.

Is this just something that is to be used to get more visitors to
your world explorer (which sometimes the pictures it displays on the
side panel are so far off the panel you can't view them.

Hi Mike

It looks like you entered the TagMaps Data API as a custom data source
- TagMaps doesnt support authenticated RSS feeds as tag inputs which
is why the tags were not loading correctly.

If you'd like to use TagMaps as your tag source you should select
'World Explorer' as the XML data source on the badger page
(http://developer.yahoo.com/yrb/tagmaps/badger.html) which will give
you a working badge with TagMaps data.

More information...

so I had set the option on the embed page to "custom source" but url
was http://tagmaps.research.yahooapis.com/services/rest/taglookup.php?
minlat=28.3412518964369&maxlat=28.43246820620096&minlon=-
81.60867691040039&maxlon=-81.5049934387207&zoom=5&appid={removed}

I switched to "world Explorer" and the sample on the embed page loads
the tags.

Am going to go change the code on my page to the new code from the
embed page.

This mailing list is the place to discuss all things related to the
TagMaps APIs. TagMaps are a new way to visualize text on geographic
maps. They can be used to communicate key characteristics of
location-based data in an easy-to-understand way.

Our API documentation is available at
http://developer.yahoo.com/yrb/tagmaps/

On the off chance you've stumbled across this list without seeing our
web site, be sure to visit:

This site contains many demos of TagMaps technology and is a good way
to see the power of geospatial tags
