What is the appropriate image for Charles Darwin?   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #1405 of 1433 |
The Royal Mint[1] is to celebrate the 200th anniversay of Darwin's
birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin Of
Species with a special coin.

Am I the only one to think that putting his image face-to-face with
that of a monkey shows a lazy lack of originality? Darwin's ideas were
sparked by examining finches and giant tortoises, not monkeys. A finch
would have been far more appropriate if an animal had to be included.[2]

The general public might readily associate Darwin with apes but this is
surely the opportunity to correct that misconception not reinforce it?

Yours,
Disappointed of Tunbridge Wells.

[2] I realise that there might be a rule requiring something to
accompany his head lest people be confused as to which represents the
monarch.

Personally, I like it. It reinforces the fact that our closest non-human relative is the chimp. Actually, every time I look into the mirror, I see a chimp. :)...

I have no problem with Mr. Darwin looking at a chimp (on a stamp), but they might be well advised to focus on the finch as there's less hot air and anxiety...
