All,

Good news. KDE2.0 will have Tamil as one of its
language. just made it with the bare minimal
translations.
they have frozen KDE2.0 source code. you can expect
RPMs/DEBs soon.
so whoever wants to try KDE2.0, dont forget to
download the Tamil pack too
It needs some hacking to get this working. I will send
instructions later.
Get ready to have fun :-)

Subject: linux/open source essays in tamil
naadodi@...
Send Email Send Email

Hello all,

Some of you might have noticed that I write a series of essays in tamil on
linux and open source movement. These appear in tamil ezine thinnai.com

I was expecting reactions/corrections/suggestions from some of our friends
here, nothing till date. This is a focused effort to introduce linux at a
deeper level for the tamil audience. I would be very very glad if our
knowledgeable friends comment on it and give suggestions. I have been
receiving few private mails criticising my essays, particularly pointing the
shortfalls of current commercial copyright of multinationals. Most of them
do not know the deeper implications of these copyright and when I rightly
point to the proper statements from microsoft/adobe etc., they agree with my
point.

So far four essays have appeared,
1. Brief introduction to linux
2. What is possible with linux
3. Why open source is superior
4. The limitations of patended software, the ironies in patending.

Some of the forthcoming topics include

5. History of open source movement
6. It is possible to commercially succeed keeping the source open
7. Open source and us - how and why linux is suitable for india
8. The culture of open source, copyleft, etc. in tamil dating from sangam
period
9. The available free sources to use tamil in computers (for all OS with
stress on linux)
10. Invitation to join, directions to take

the future plan is tentative and flexible, please give your suggestions.

As you can understand I write these essays based on the available open
source literature and internet resources. If any of you have pointers to
these in any direction, please help me. I plan to acknowledge all people
who have thus far contributed (keepin with the spirit of open source), so
any help will be acknowledged in a suitable manner.

I can continue to write these essays with my understanding, but I want to
shape them better with collective ideas. Like any open source initiative
even propaganda is better done with colloboration ::-))

Looking forward to hearing from you,

anbudan

Dear sivaraj,

How did you get this message!!! I have been trying in the past to look into
gnome and kde localization teams in other languages to know their strategy
and progress, only in vain. For example the only indic language that can be
seen in the kde localization efforts is tamil. Do these people really work
on the localization or they are just squatting on it.

Another strange and interesting fact to note is that while the efforts are
centered around IIT madras, there is no mention about tamil in the whole
mail. Wonder why?

These people should realize that open source is and can never be done in
isolation. Does anyone know the progress in other indian languages?

modules (but the period can be cut short if users find it easier to
digest the lessons and the discussions seem sufficient).

Course material will be delivered at the TUGIndia web site in pdf
formats (both screen and print versions) and TeX sources will also be
made available.

All your questions, doubts (whether trivial or not) will be patiently
answered by a team of resource persons specially set up for this
tutorial.

As the efforts for this are enormous, we would request you to send this
note to any person whom you think might be interested in TeX, so that we
cover the maximum number of academics, researchers, students in this
country. This mail can be freely distributed.

The tutorial will start by the first week of October 2000. The first
three chapters of the tutorial is available at:

Hello Prabhu,

Is the display problem only for Aaraamthinai or for all Tamil
sites ?

If it is for any Tamil site, your installation still has problems.

If it is for Aaraamthiani only, read below.
Aaraamthinai is one website, where I could not display Tamil
chars. on my Sun workstation. I thought I identified the problem
and I wrote to them looong back, only to hear - 'we are working
   on it'.

But, I'm still puzzled, as their pages display correctly on
     my Slackware linux.

My advice - do not rely on Aaaramthinai pages to check your fonts.
Instead, try some other Tamil pages.

- Anbu.
PS: Thanks for that informative Font-Howto.

Hi,

Use the following steps
-------------------------
Obtain and install a Tamil font on your UNIX system

     1. Create an empty directory for storing the font
Download this [3]Tamil bitmap font for UNIX.
If you have downloaded the compressed version, uncompress the font
files in the subdirectory by using the command gunzip.

Example

# gunzip tamilnet18.bdf.gz
# gunzip tamilfix18.bdf.gz
# ls -l
drwxr-xr-x 2 kokyong staff 512 Aug 7 18:14 .
drwxr-xr-x 7 kokyong staff 512 Aug 5 15:47 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 kokyong staff 25522 Sep 20 15:05 tamilfix18.bdf
-rw-r--r-- 1 kokyong staff 25507 Sep 20 15:05 tamilnet18.bdf

     2. Create the font directory file by running the command mkfontdir.
This will create the file 'fonts.dir'.
        Example

# mkfontdir
# ls -al
drwxr-xr-x 2 kokyong staff 512 Aug 7 18:14 .
drwxr-xr-x 7 kokyong staff 512 Aug 5 15:47 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 kokyong staff 148 Sep 20 14:07 fonts.dir
-rw-r--r-- 1 kokyong staff 25522 Sep 20 15:05 tamilfix18.bdf
-rw-r--r-- 1 kokyong staff 25507 Sep 20 15:05 tamilnet18.bdf
#
     3. (Optional) If you look into the file "fonts.dir", you should see
        something like
        Example

# cat fonts.dir
2
tamilnet18.bdf -irdu-tamilnet-medium-r-normal--18-100-75-75-p-80-govin-0
tamilfix18.bdf -irdu-tamilfix-medium-r-normal--18-100-75-75-m-80-govin-0
#
which shows the X11 logical font name of the two Tamil fonts.
     4. Next, you need to tell the X-Server to look for the Tamil fonts in
this directory by executing the command "xset +fp directory_name"
        Example
  pwd

Note that you must specify the full pathname of the directory where you
fonts r
eside! Do not use the dot . to specify the current path - it won't work.
See [4]Common Problems below for the error.

(Optional) To verify that you have correctly installed the Tamil
font, use the command "xlsfonts" to check that the font is
correctly registered and "xfd" to check that the font can be
        display correctly.
        Example
# xlsfonts | grep tamil
-irdu-tamilnet-medium-r-normal--18-100-75-75-p-80-govin-0
-irdu-tamilfix-medium-r-normal--18-100-75-75-m-80-govin-0
#
If you see the above message, the Tamil font has been correctly
        registered in the X server.

#xfd -fn '-irdu-tamilnet-medium-r-normal--18-100-75-75-p-80-govin-0'
You should see a window pop up with Tamil characters
        inside.

Friends,

I just joined this list (couple of days ago I think) and feels good to be in.

Has anyone tried any OpenType fonts with FreeType for Linux ?
The latest version of FreeType is suppose to understand some of the tables in
OpenType that's required to render Unicode Tamil Text.

about Quantum Computing, I commented in the forumhub sujatha thread about
it. Look at the kind of reaction I got for that, so I refrained from
commenting about this elsewhere. Pl. see

http://forumhub.com/tlit/20295.08.43.42.html

These kinds of statements from someone who has cult followers (for many of
them what sujatha says is the last word) does a lot of damages. I am
planning to increase the awareness about the whole initatives in popular
media.

BTW, I have a written a whole article about Quantum Computing which is
expected to appear in my usual science column in thiNNai tonight. Pl. send
in your comments about it. (http://thinnai.com ). Members of this
discussion group with interest in computers and tamil should comment on it.

I need to study it further to understand what it really does. But
as you said it may not help in remote login cases.

I am extremely sorry. I was trying the entire installation of
consoleTamil under Xterminal. all the errors are due to that. When i
tried in plain text login it is working perfectly.

If it can be done using console-tools,please do suggest the mechanism
and it is fine . But in any case my work is not for console
input. It is for terminal input and people doing remote login also get
this facility apart from people doing console input. We must make use of
Linux's open source nature as effectively as possible.

Hello Everyone,

It is a great feeling to be a part of the fledgling community (at last) of
tamil linux enthusiasts.

BTW, I'm sure you'd have come across the disparaging remarks made by
Sujatha about tamil linux efforts in his column "Kattrathum Pettrathum" in
Anantha Vikatan. I was rather disappointed by his comments.

In that article he says that "other people like the Germans do not waste
too much time on internationalization, so why should we?". May be he
doesn't know who is leading the KDE project. He also probably doesn't
know much about the Thai linux distribution that is deployed widely in
Thai schools.

The overall impression that I got was that he was talking about it without
a good understanding of the underlying issues.

Any comments?

Dear friends,

Mr.Vinod is the author of "Tamil support in Linux kernel" paper
presented in Tamil Inaiyam 2000 conference. He has changed the
kernel to better support Tamil in Linux. You can read
the paper from Tamil Inaiyam 2000 site at
http://www.tamilinaiyam2000.org/conference_hub.html

Vinod:

This is just a proof-of-concept work. I wanted to show that it is
possible to display Tamil in console. Reading the Tamil text using
current font needs a relearning of Tamil :-(.
But since most of the distorted characters are somewhat rarely
used, the text is still legible in most part.

I do not like this option since it reduces the displayed text on
the screen by half. Besides, most softwares assume an 80 char
screen width. Variable width character support in console will be
great but it is a distant dream. But there seems to be some
support for half-width and full width characters to display
Hangul (Chinese) script (Half width = 8x16, full width = 16x16).
I am not sure how this is done.

Please have a look at the console-tools package. This is a
replacement for old kbd package. I feel that the work you have
done in kernel can be better done in console-tools. Let us know
what you feel.

We should plan on full unicode support for Tamil in kernel.
consoleTamil bypasses the unicode and screen font map mechanism
and links the application character set directly to the font,
which is a short term solution.

BTW, I am out on a training for the next two weeks from tomorrow,
so my replies might be delayed.

Regards,
Sivaraj.

Hi Saravanan,

I am at a loss to explain why this is happening. I am tried two
different versions of console-tools and it is working ok.
Get the console-tools code and try debugging it.
You can get it from lct.sourceforge.net or from metalab.

The consolechars.c program is in screenfonttools directory
and set_kernel_font function is in /lib/kernelfont.c file.

>can you pl. send me the source code of consoleTamil-0.4?
>(I hope it is GPLed :-)

Of course it is GPLed. And you have got all the source
already in consoleTamil-0.4.tar.gz package.

In this everything other than the font file are in plain text.
The font was created using fonted, fonter and recently cfe
and is based on default8x16.

Nanbargale,

  Vanakkam.
I am Vinod from IISc - intha minanjal kuzhivin puthu varavu.

I had a look at the Tamil Linux console work.
  - I must first say it is a good effort.

Some of the characters like the moonru suzhi nuu, ( even moonru suzhi in)
are distorted beyond recognition because of constraint of width of 8
pixels for each character.

This problem can easily be overcome if we set the textmode screen to 40 *
24 instead of 80 columns * 24 rows. In that case width of each character
is 16, so we can display the characters legibly and in superior font
style. Can anyone suggest how to change the screen mode in Linux ?
  ( btw , 40 * 24 textmode does exist )

Redhat linux 6.2 on a IBM-PC300GL.

Regardless of Unicode being accepted as the singular encoding standard
in the world, most major operating systems have started converting to
Unicode. (I hear that east asians - chinese, japanese and korean -
have some reservations in using unicode).

Linux kernel handles all text internally as Unicode. Text in
other encoding is first converted to Unicode before displayed.

Major open source projects also are slowly converting to unicode.
QT 2.0, hence KDE 2.0 will be fully Unicode based. GLIB 1.4 and
GTK 1.4 will be unicode based, and so will be Gnome 1.4 (or is it 2.0?)
which will be based on GTK 1.4.

Even Mozilla handles all the text internally as Unicode. This is the
reason why we are not yet able to build Tamil support into Mozilla.

So, to be future proof, we have to follow unicode in all our developments.
While 8-bit encodings will be relevant for websites and mailing lists
for some time to come, the debate is over on the system front.
All 8-bit encodings should be handled through convertors from and to unicode.

BTW, I do have a convertor between UTF-8 and TSCII used in Pango.
I will try to release it seperately.

Regards,
Sivaraj.

Try giving the fullname of the font file as
consolechars -f ta_tscii.psf.gz

If this doesn't work, please send me the details of your distribution
and the version of console-tools you are running.
If you are running rpm based system "rpm -q console-tools".
