See http://seattle. craigslist. org/sno/pho/ 1402859122. html for complete
listing

1971 Celestron Pacific C-5 astronomical telescope

This is an older Celestron C-5. It is f-10 with a focal l250mm. The optics
are superb and many have commented on the quality of the images. It comes
with a heavy duty tripod made for the 14" telescope providing a very stable
scope. The drive system is with the dual synchronous AC motors and comes
with a drive corrector that can run off 120vac or 12vdc. The finder is a
"red dot" finder. Also has a piggy-back mount for a camera.

Attached are two photos taken with this telescope. The eclipse shot was
taken in Cabo San Lucas during the 1991 total solar eclipse using an Olympus
OM-1 & 100asa Fujichrome film. The other pic is of Comet 17-P Holmes taken
with a Meade CCD camera on October 30th, 2007.

Price is $450.00 firm. Please be serious about this if you contact me. If
you are new to Astronomy, I will offer assistance setting up the scope and a
night of observing to help you out.

One light bulb at a time

Check your labels
......................................................................................................................

Check this out. I can verify this because I was in Lowe's the other day for some reason and just for the heck of it I was looking at the hose attachments. They were all made in China. The next day I was in Ace Hardware and just for the heck of it I checked the hose attachments there. They were made in USA. Start looking.

In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else - even their job. So, after reading this email, I think this lady is on the right track. Let's get behind her!

My grandson likes Hershey's candy. I noticed, though, that it is marked made in Mexico now. I do not buy it any more. My favorite toothpaste Colgate is made in Mexico now. I have switched to Crest. You have to read the labels on everything.

This past weekend I was at Kroger. I needed 60W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets. I was in the light bulb aisle, and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off brand labeled, "Everyday Value." I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price. The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - the USA in a company in Cleveland, Ohio
So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here.

So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets....yep, you guessed it, Bounce cost more money and is made in Canada. The Everyday Value brand was less money and MADE IN THE USA! I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using for years and at almost half the price!

My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors!

If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others in your address book so we can all start buying American, one light bulb at a time! Stop buying from overseas companies!

When General Eisenhower was President the country also went through a severe loss of jobs. He provided leadership from his office by organizing a "Buy American campaign". It was a resounding success. We should have awakened a decade ago and done the same......

Let's get with the program....  help our fellow Americans keep their jobs and create more jobs here in the U.S.A.

Our greatest glory is not in never falling-but in rising every time we fall.  Confucius 551 BC-479 BC

I conduct boat tours of the Narrows (among other places ) and noticed an observatory above the Narrows and the railroad tunnel at Salmon Beach.  I was looking for some general information about the structure to include in my tour narrative.

Can anyone there tell me a bit about it?

Tacoma Astronomical Society hosted an LCROSS breakfast bash at the W.M. Keck Observatory at the PLU campus.  We had a BLAST even though we didn't see one!!  (LOL)

We filled the observatory...overflowed to the telescope field...then overflowed to 3 different classrooms for live NASA feeds!  In attendance were visitors from the PLU area, PLU students and faculty, TAS members (and some new TAS member wannabes), KIRO TV, KOMO TV, and KOMO Radio.  We made the NASA list of observing sites and later today I will write up our report to send back to the Observing Campaign.  All-in-all we had a great time and consider the event a success.

Special thanks to John Pettit, Michael Williams (both of whom looked great on the 11:00 news!) Jerry Cody and wife, Bill Briggs, and Bob and Greg Harris, whose prep work and day-of labors made this a great event!

I posted the fall newsletter today. Among other things, there is a good
piece on observing quasars by Jerry Cotey. If you have anything
suggestions or content for the winter edition, I'd appreciate it.

Our little dry streak is about to come to an end. But if you looked at Mt. Rainier today, you would have known that already.

Take a look at some of these incredible clouds captured over Mt. Rainier today.

Those are called "lenticular clouds"  They're caused when the air flow is just right so when it flows over Mt. Rainier , the air gets pushed upward where it cools and condenses into clouds.  Depending on how smooth the flow is, you can get some amazing clouds formations as we've seen so far today.  Here is more information on what causes them from an earlier blog entry.

It's usually a sign of rain within 24 hours because typically the moist flow that precedes a storm around here is the perfect set up for these clouds.

We are now taking pre-orders for the 2010 Royal Astronomical Society of Canada's (RASC) Observers Handbook.  This is one of my "must haves" for each year, I highly recommend this book!  A description of the contents can be found here:

http://www.rasc.ca/handbook/

The TAS member price for the book is $17.00 (retail is 25.95) so if you are interested please email me directly and I'll put your name on the list.  Bring your check to the next General meeting, the annual Holiday Party, or mail it to the club P.O. Box 8881 Tacoma WA 98419.  If you have friend that would like the book we can order it for them at the discount (non-TAS member) price of $20

Cheers,

Upcoming lectures will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings through
October and November in Kane Hall, Room 120. Speakers will include Steve Brenner

I just confirmed with the homeschool coordinator and we are "Go!" for this Friday's starparty/outreach event.  They are expecting around 25-30 kids plus their guardians.

We are holding this event regardless of the weather and could really use some volunteers.

Clear weather activities will be focused on making and using planispheres and viewing at the telescopes

Bad weather activities will be inside and focused around making and using planispheres, paper-tape scale of the solar system, moon phases, how telescopes work (light bench activities), telescope show and tell (you and your telescope inside) and we can open up the long hall and put objects at the opposite end to view

This Friday we have a star party outreach event at the Olympic Flight Museum.  Joe Witherspoon started this partnership several years ago and it has always been a fun event with lots of people....rain or shine!
We can start setting up around 6pm.  The have a darker spot for us behind the hanger so you will be able to drive in, unload, and then move your car back to the parking lot.

If it rains we will be inside the museum and hanger(s) with hands on activities (would love to see folk bring their scopes inside!), a scavenger hunt, and a movie.  Please let me know if you can make the event and what equipment you are bringing, I would love to make different telescopes part of the scavenger hunt.

The student have their final Jeopardy! game that night so they won't be able to help out so I will need more help from the general membership.

Don't worry if you don't have a telescope!  I could use some help with other activities not involving glass and mirrors.

Excellent!  Thanks for the reply...how about if you bring the 6" newtonian then I can add your telescope to the scavenger hunt (there are always dobs!).  If it ends up being cloudy then I would love to have you bring your scope inside and be in charge of the "How telescopes work" section.  I'll bring the optics box for you.

See y'all Friday!

Directions: 7637 A Old Highway 99 SE Olympia WA 98501

Thanks a million!

Alice

Alice,

I can attend this event, I have 3 scopes I can use a C14 with 2 types of cameras, 10" DOB, and a 6" Newt on a EQ mount.  I also have a C5 camera.  Let me know what you would like for me to do.
