Hi,
I've released a new version of QuickTimeTcl, 2.1.0 today. The only change
from 2.0.2 is that now you can optionally use QuickTime Movie controllers
with your movies. This is a good thing if you say have a QTVR movie which
up till now has been static. It also is a good UI for movies which stops
you from having to write your own in Tcl/Tk.
The downside to using a controller is that any events which occur in the
movie disapper into the movie controller. So, you choice is, good UI and
more movies work, but, less control, or, do it all yourself with full
control.
Great thanks go to Jim Ingham and Ray Johnson for their hints as to what
was necessary to get controllers to work with Mac Tcl/Tk.
Two people have stepped forward to help with the Windows port so that
should happen soon. Thanks.
QuickTimeTcl is at http://homepage.iprolink.ch/~bioneel/beo/homepage.html.
cheers
bruce

Hi All!
New version 1.2.4 of Paradigm Visual Make!
I have volunteered to develop and maintain this software. Please send
comments, suggestions, questions, and bug reports to dminer@...
You can find new versions of the software at:
http://www.nyx.net/~dminer/pvm
What's New?
-----------
Version 1.2.4
integrated small unreleased changes from Andrew
quick change to the toolbar to look like Win 97 apps
fixed scrollbars positioning
added simple undo/redo (unlimited, still alpha)
What is it
----------
PVM is software development environment, written in pure Tcl/Tk which
can be adjusted to different programming languages and source file
types.
It incorporates a text editor, simple software project (makefile)
editor and enables you to develop and build your software projects from
within single program. And for debugging your application, it can start
your favorite external debugger.
It also enables you to execute almost any external program (e.g. "diff"
or "dircmp") and capture its output into a specialised PVM text
window.
It looks like a MS Windows MDI application and has highly
reconfigurable visual appearance.

Many people requested a binary distribution for Windows
95/NT. Here it is...... See below :-)
The plus- patches consist of the following enhancements:
- tcl2c utility, and support to create your own standalone
executables
- Tk is now a normal package, which can be dynamically loaded
by tclsh, using "package require Tk".
- All tests are available as packages.
- Jeffrey Hobbs' TkCon console (version 1.1) is the standard
console for tclsh.
- many bug-fixes from Scriptics' patch resource.
Available are the following files:
ftp://ftp.nici.kun.nl/pub/tkpvm/tcl81a2plus.exe (3308848 bytes) NEW
Self-extracting binary distribution of a modified Tcl/Tk8.1a2 (with
plus-patch, dash-patch, img-patch and elide.patch already applied)
ftp://ftp.nici.kun.nl/pub/tkpvm/tcl8.1a2plus.patch.gz (153984 bytes)
plus-patch for Tcl8.1a2.
ftp://ftp.nici.kun.nl/pub/tkpvm/tk8.1a2plus.patch.gz (51928 bytes)
plus-patch for Tk8.1a2.
ftp://ftp.nici.kun.nl/pub/tkpvm/tcl8.1a2plus.tar.gz (2851807 bytes)
Complete distribution of Tcl8.1a2+ (with plus-patch already applied)
ftp://ftp.nici.kun.nl/pub/tkpvm/tcl81a2plus.zip (3268454 bytes)
The same as tcl8.1a2plus.tar.gz, only in a different format.
ftp://ftp.nici.kun.nl/pub/tkpvm/tk8.1a2plus.tar.gz (2264864 bytes)
Complete distribution of Tk8.1a2+ (with plus-patch, dash-patch,
img-patch and elide.patch already applied)
ftp://ftp.nici.kun.nl/pub/tkpvm/tk81a2plus.zip (2609088 bytes)
The same as tk8.1a2plus.tar.gz, only in a different format.
More information can be found at:
http://home.wxs.nl/~nijtmans/plus.html
IMPORTANT!!!!
Remember, this is an alpha release, and it is also the first release of
a self-extracting executable for Windows 95/NT. It is only tested with
Microsoft Visual C++ 5.0, but it should be not so difficult to get it
running with Borland as well.
KNOWN BUGS
The binary distribution for Windows runs, but is not yet complete. The
README and the help-file are the same as from the original distribution,
so they don't mention anything about the enhancements. Further on,
everything is compiled with MSVC 5.0++, so I wouln't be surprised if
there are problems with other compilers. In that case, you better
apply the patches by yourself, or download the full distribution in
zip-format.
Any feedback is welcome.
Regards,

Hi everybody: here is a new version of moodss.
Check it out! (at least the screenshot at
http://www.mygale.org/~jfontain/moodss3.jpg :).
### CHANGES ###
*** version 3.6 ***
pie charts now resize nicely (slices always leave room for labels as
BLT charts do)
uses stooop 3.6 and tkpiechart 5.2
drag circle cursor is no longer changed to double arrow when dragging
across
right side of a table
column resizing cursor no longer sticks in column title labels
dragging now possible only from selected cell or viewer element label
in graphs, flat 0 lines are now visible even with other lines in the
graph
graphs now handle void value with plot discontinuities
graph background is now black for better clarity
graph start plotting only when fed new values (no more initial flat
lines)
### README ###
This is moodss (Modular Object Oriented Dynamic SpreadSheet) version
3.6. Moodss is implemented in the great Tcl language (requires at
least versions 8.0 of Tcl and Tk, for UNIX or Windows).
Moodss is a modular application. It displays data described and
updated in one or more independent modules loaded when the application
is started. Data is originally displayed in tables. Graphical views
(graph, bar or pie charts) can be created from any number of table
cells through a simple drag'n'drop operation. Table rows can be sorted
in increasing or decreasing order by selecting any column.
Since module data access is entirely customizable (through C code,
Tcl, HTTP, ...) and since several modules can be loaded at once,
applications for moodss become limitless. For example, comparing a
remote database server CPU load and a network load from a probe on the
same graph becomes possible.
Apart from a sample module with random data, ps, cpustats and memstats
modules for Linux are included as examples
(running "wish moodss ps cpustats memstats" mimics the "top"
application with a graphic edge). Module contibutions are of course
welcomed and will be included in my home page.
Thorough help is provided through menus, widget tips, a message area,
a module help window and a global help window with a complete HTML
documentation.
One or more module names are passed as command line parameters. The
moodss core then loads the modules and starts displaying their data in
one or more tables, which are then updated at a user selectable
frequency.
The module code is the link between the moodss core and the data to be
displayed. All the specific code is kept in the module package. Moodss
goal is to become a complete and generic way of monitoring data.
Development of moodss is continuing and as more features are added in
future versions, backward module code compatibility will be maintained.
I cannot thank the authors of tkTable, BLT (official and unofficial)
and the HTML library enough for their great work.
In order to run moodss, you need to install the following packages:
obviously Tcl/Tk 8.0 or 8.1 at (or at a mirror near you)
http://sunscript.sun.com/ or
http://www.scriptics.com/
the tkTable widget at:
ftp://ftp.cs.uoregon.edu/pub/tcl/tkTable/tkTable2.00.tar.gz
and the BLT library at:
ftp://ftp.tcltk.com/pub/blt/BLT2.4a.tar.gzftp://ftp.neosoft.com/pub/tcl/sorted/devel/blt8.0-unoff.tgz
(see the INSTALL file for complete instructions, for UNIX and also
Windows platforms).
Whether you like it (or hate it), please let me know. I would like to
hear about bugs and improvements you would like to see. I will correct
the bugs quickly, especially if you send me a test script (module code
with a data trace would be best).

Hello world,
I hereby announce autodoc 2.0.
It is
An application to convert specially formatted documentation
embedded into tcl code into a cross-referenced set of
HTML pages describing this code.
Changes from 1.0
* **requires** tcl 8.x
* Updated to the changes made in Pool (1.0 -> 2.0, OO kernel).
* Factored out the HTML generating part and inserted API allowing other
generators in the future (text, SGML, ...)
* Updated HTML generator to changes between cgi 0.4 and 0.7
(cgi_anchor_name semantics changed). Cannot be used with cgi 0.4
anymore, at least 0.7 is required.
* Simplified interface between autodoc and '.doc' and '.predoc' files.
* Changes in recognized commands:
<> Replaced @member/@m with @var/@v.
Still recognizes the old forms and marks them as errors.
* Changes in cross referencing
<> Added <x ..> as shortcut of <xref ..>.
<> Added <v ..> and <var ..> to allow references to member
variables.
<> Added <i ..> and <img ..> to allow references to images
(as defined in '.predoc' files).
<> Enhanced method, option and variable references to allow
references without a classname. The class enclosing the
reference is automatically used.
<> Changed the separator character used by method, option and
variable references from '/' to ':'. Still recognizes the
old forms and marks them as errors.
<> Removed <e ..> and <ext>, recognizes <d ..> and <dep ..>
instead (external DEPendencies). Still recognizes the old
forms and marks them as errors.
The distribution can be found at

Fellow Tcl/Tk users,
I have uploaded TDebug-1.7.tar.gz to
ftp://ftp.neosoft.com/pub/tcl/sorted/devel/TDebug-1.7.tar.gz
or
http://www.neosoft.com/tcl/ftparchive/sorted/devel/TDebug-1.7.tar.gz
This version has a few minor enhancements and new features.
New since version 1.6 (From David Dougherty)
If tix is available a tixPanedWindow is drawn between the listing
and the variable window providing much better control over the display.
Add control to the Debugger Variable menu to control whether
variable values are wrapped in the widget or not also controlled by the
wrapvars variable.
Added searching to the variable display, regular expression is
applied to the variables and values on subsequent display.
New since version 1.5 (From David Dougherty)
Added new color control for more consistent display across
application.
Added find field for procedure name searches, activated by <Return>.
Fixed a bug in breakpoint routine caused by embedded []{}
characters. It's still not perfect but much better.
README is now solely maintained in HTML (this file).
For those of you that would like more information on TDebug:
TDebug is a Tcl debugger that uses a different approach other debuggers
I've seen for Tcl/Tk. Its concept is similar to the emacs-lisp debugger
`edebug'.
TDebug is solely based on Tcl/Tk, there is no C-code, which makes it
very easy to install. It works by parsing and redefining Tcl/Tk-procs,
inserting calls to `td_eval' at certain points, which takes care of the
display, stepping, breakpoints, variables etc.
TDebug was written by Gregor Schmid, David Dougherty is the current
maintainer.

Hi everybody: here is a new version of stooop:
### CHANGES ###
*** version 3.6 ***
the switched package is now installed by default (see the INSTALL
if you do not want to use it)
parameter passing by reference now works with virtual declarations
### README ###
This is stooop (a Simple Tcl Only Object Oriented Programming scheme)
version 3.6. Stooop is implemented in a single sourceable file and
uses simple techniques to provide object orientation to the great Tcl
language.
If you know C++ or Java, stooop will be easy to use for you. Using the
familiar class, new, delete and virtual keywords and a few coding
conventions, you can start object oriented Tcl code right away, as the
following simple example shows:
source stooop.tcl
namespace import stooop::*
class circle {
proc circle {this canvas diameter} {
set circle::($this,diameter) $diameter
set circle::($this,canvas) $canvas
set circle::($this,id) [$canvas create oval 0 0 $diameter
$diameter]
}
proc ~circle {this} {
$circle::($this,canvas) delete $circle::($this,id)
}
proc move {this x y} {
$circle::($this,canvas) move $circle::($this,id) $x $y
}
}
pack [canvas .canvas]
set c [new circle .canvas 50]
update; after 1000
circle::move $c 10 10
update; after 1000
delete $c
Stooop supports single and multiple inheritance, data encapsulation
(all member data is public), dynamic binding, nested classes, object
copy, runtime type identification, optional runtime procedure and data
access checking as well as tracing.
As stooop is entirely written in Tcl, it will run on all Tcl supported
platforms, including Windows and the Mac Intosh, if you have Tcl
version 8.0 or 8.1.
The class, new, delete, virtual and classof commands are implemented
as Tcl procedures.
Stooop was implemented with a constant concern for performance. Member
data is stored in Tcl associative arrays, which are best for random
data access. Classes are implemented as namespaces to improve
encapsulation and reduce naming interferences. Object oriented helper
code is kept as small and as efficient as possible. Typically, only a
couple of Tcl lines are added to a member procedure
definition. Program startup time will be slightly increased due to
some class and member procedures preprocessing, but runtime overhead
is kept to a strict minimum. Use of object oriented techniques may
actually improve the performance of your code.
A full HTML documentation, simple demonstration script, graphical
demonstration with composite pattern and test files are provided. You
may also run the test suite and look at the test scripts for
examples. There is also a utility for creating packages (in the Tcl
sense) from stooop compatible class files.
There is a companion package to stooop: scwoop (a Simple Composite
Widget Object Oriented Package). Scwoop is implemented in a single
sourceable file and uses simple techniques to provide composite widget
(also known as mega widget) support to the great Tk widget library,
and is compatible with the Tcl web browser plug-in. Moodss (a Modular
Object Oriented Dynamic SpreadSheet) implemented with stooop, scwoop,
tkTable and BLT is also available on my website.
Whether you like it (or hate it), please let me know. I would like to
hear about bugs and improvements you would like to see. I will correct
the bugs quickly, especially if you send me a test script.

A new release of the MetaKit structured data storage interface to Tcl.
The main changes are:
- a new mk::select command to select, search, and sort views
- streaming to/from a Tcl channel is now supported (binary mode)
- builds for Linux, Windows, and Macintosh are now all for 0.7
Note: the new select command supports range selections, regexp matching,
and keyword searches (word-based case-independent prefix matching).
The Windows and Mac downloads include ready-made shared libraries, see:
http://www.equi4.com/metakit/info/README-Tcl.html
The above link also describes the mk::... commands defined by mk4tcl.
The Linux download includes the Tcl interface source w/autoconf, and
requires the MetaKit 1.8.3 shared library, available as tar and as RPM:
http://www.equi4.com/metakit/info/README-Linux.html
This code is still "beta-quality". When ready for production use, it
will be released as version 1.0 (under the same terms as this release).

Things continue to go great at Scriptics, and we're beginning the
preparations for the launch of our TclPro product this fall. We're
now looking for three more people to join the company: Senior Technical
Support Engineer, Web Sales Manager, and Professional Services Manager.
These positions are described below in more detail. If you know anyone
suitable for one of these positions, could you forward this article to
them? This information is also available at our Web site:
http://www.scriptics.com/corp/hiring.html.
Sr. Technical Support Engineer
------------------------------
As Sr. Technical Support Engineer at Scriptics, you will be leading the
creation of our Technical Support services, responding to email, Web,
and telephone queries from Tcl developers. You will set up an infrastructure
for call tracking and bug response for our TclPro customers by September,
and then assist in growing the Support business by mentoring additional
staff and using leading-edge Web-based support solutions. You will take
responsibility for a satisfactory resolution to customer problems, working
as a liaison to product development and QA when required. You will also
help with product design and engineering efforts to ensure appropriate
supportability features and functions, assisting to identify and verify
installation, documentation, and proposed work-arounds.
Candidate Qualifications
The Sr. Technical Support Engineer must have 5+ years experience in
software technical support services. The ideal candidate will have a B.S.
or higher in Computer Science or other technical degree, be proficient in
Tcl, C, and C++ languages, and be familiar with supporting both Unix and
Windows platforms. Excellent problem solving, interpersonal and
communication skills, and a strong customer focus are a must.
Web Sales Manager
-----------------
Scriptics will sell the majority of its software development tools and
services over the web. As Web Sales Manager at Scriptics Corporation, you
will lead the creation of our telesales organization, which will be the
primary sales vehicle for the company. Working with marketing, you will
use your prior experiences to help specify and set up an infrastructure
to support and enhance web-based sales of our tools, support services and
training courses to corporate developers. Responsibilities include all pre-
and post-sales activities to generate revenues, including qualifying leads,
answering questions via phone or email, closing sales, and providing
customer follow-up. You will also serve as a key source of information
about our customers, and will work with marketing, product development
and services to understand how to best meet our customers’ needs.
Candidate Qualifications
The Web Sales Manager must be an aggressive and self-motivated individual
who wants to lead the charge for a new start-up company. The ideal candidate
will have 5+ years inside sales and software experience, and will have
significant experience in using Internet-based tools to leverage sales
efforts. Familiarity with software development tools is a big plus.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills are a must. Compensation
includes base + commission + stock options.
Professional Services Manager
-----------------------------
As Professional Services Manager at Scriptics, you will lead the creation,
development and on-going management of our world-class Technical Support,
Training, and Consulting Services. You will use your experience and
creativity to: plan and implement our internal and external processes,
programs and projects; work with marketing and sales on pricing and
messages; recruit and develop staff; be hands-on whenever needed; and
take significant responsibility for the company’s relationship with our
customers.
Technical Support: Your first objective will be to establish our Technical
Support Center, using leading and innovative technologies for Web-centric
support and our call-tracking infrastructure.
Training: You will plan the growth of our training business, staffing
appropriately with full-time employees and contractors, developing
materials for new courses, etc.
Consulting Services: Once Technical Support and Training are in operation,
you will plan our Consulting Services business to meet the Tcl market’s
demand for both expert technical services and project-based staff
augmentation services. As a member of the management team, you will
help drive the active growth and dynamic culture of Scriptics Corporation.
Candidate Qualifications
Our Professional Services Manager must be a responsible self-starter with
relevant experiences. We are looking for someone who will enjoy and excel
in the fast-moving world of a software start-up, be adept at juggling
lots of projects, be willing to provide hands-on help as well as managerial
direction, and who will bring both attention to detail and creativity to
the job. The ideal candidate has a minimum of 7+ years in software customer
service, training and support. Background should include demonstrated
experience in staff development, successful customer account management,
and strong project management, organizational and communication skills.
Experience in contractor and vendor management helpful. Familiarity with
Unix and Windows systems, C, C++, scripting languages, and Tcl is preferred.

Scriptics will officially open the doors of its Training department the
week of June 22nd, with our first two courses: "Building GUI
Applications with Tcl/Tk" (June 22 - 24), and "Effective Programming in
Tcl/Tk" (June 25 - 26)! These courses will be given in Palo Alto,
California. We will repeat these courses at the same location
during the week of July 13 through 17. We also plan to offer these
course at additional locations in the near future.
If you are a novice or beginning Tcl/Tk user, "Building GUI
Applications" is right for you; if you are a more advanced Tcl/Tk user,
or have gone through our first course, "Effective Programming" will be
a great benefit. Each student is provided with a laptop computer during
the course so they can learn in a hands-on environment and given a
book and extensive course notes to take home.
If you are interested in registering for these courses, please go to
our web site, http://www.scriptics.com/training. Take advantage and
register early! We have to limit each class to 20 students.
If you are interested in our Tcl/Tk training, but want to sign up for
different locations, corporate on-site classes, and/or later dates,
please also go to our web site and fill out our Training Needs Survey,
http://www.scriptics.com/training/survey.html, so that we can plan how
to meet your needs. We will be offering these first two courses on a
regular basis, and plan to develop additional courses as well on such
topics as object-oriented programming with [incr Tcl], Web
programming, and C/C++ programming for Tcl extensions.
Bonus offer: If you fill out our training survey you will be given
priority notification of new courses. This will let you register early
for courses and increase your chances of getting your first choice.
We are looking forward to meeting you in the classroom.
Happy Tcl programming!

This summer Scriptics is going to mount a major PR campaign to raise
the level of visibility of scripting in general and Tcl in particular.
The campaign will have greatest impact if we can point to 3-5 success
stories. We already know of hundreds of success stories, but almost
all of these are in the high-tech sector, which doesn't count for much
among the press and analysts (a high-tech company adopting a new
technical solution isn't hot news).
I'm writing to see if you can help us identify success stories outside
the technical sector. The ideal story will involve a large, very
conservative, company (banks, utilities, and insurance companies are
great examples) doing mission-critical things with Tcl and reaping
large benefits from it. We'll need for people from the company to talk
with our PR firm to work up the story, and then be available to talk
with the press and analysts when the story breaks. Potentially this
can provide good publicity for the companies in addition to helping Tcl.
If you know of a company that might be able to provide a nice success
story, or, even better, if you work for such a company, please send
me email.
Thanks in advance for the help. We hope that this publicity will help
everyone in the community by raising the general level of appreciation
for Tcl.

Student GUI Programmer Position Available
We are hiring a student to help us write the code for an innovative
GUI.
The system will be developed using Tcl/Tk. Knowledge of Unix is
required. Knowledge of C is desired. This is a good chance for a
student to participate in an advanced research project dealing with
GUI design, implementation and testing. The student will be working
directly with the scientists designing the system.
The kind of experience we are looking for includes:
- Programming ability in Tcl/Tk, some C.
- Familiarity with UNIX, particularly Solaris
- Ability to write reliable, maintainable code
- Ability to diagnose and analyze problems
- Demonstrated ability to learn new skills
- Good communications skills
- We would prefer a student at Rutgers University
These are areas that we would like applicants to show abilities but we
will look at resumes for anyone who has strong Tcl/Tk experience.
Wages would depend on experience.
Hours: About 40 hrs. per week during the Summer.
Please submit resumes by June 1, 1998 to Jose Perez-Carballo
(carballo@...). E-mail submissions should be
formatted in rtf or ASCII text. Examples of your tcl code would help.
(We do not check this group, so please send mail directly)
