Hello tcl/tk users,

After the USENIX conference and CeBIT are over, it's time to focus on
the 1. European User Tcl/Tk User Meeting again. Many people well known
in the Tcl community will come to Hamburg and have a paper, among them
is even Jeff Hobbs for Scriptics. But there is still some time to fill,
so please contact me if you like to present your work.

I'm not really a marketing expert, so if you are talking which might be
interested to take part, please tell them about the user meeting. It
won't be that usefull if only the speakers attend . . .

The registration should start on friday, 17.th of march. The costs for
the meeting will be 100,- DM (~50 EURO).

This includes

	 - one seat per person
	 - printed proceedings
	 - coffee / tea and cookies for the breaks

Not included is accomodation, lunch or dinner.

As I planned the budget tight, there is no discount for speaker
available.

More information about accomodation etc. is available on

	 http://www.tu-harburg.de/skf/tcltk

Looking forward to see you in Hamburg, Carsten

Subject: trf 2.0p6
a.kupries@...
Send Email Send Email

Hello world,

I hereby announce trf 2.0p6.
It is
A loadable extension to Tcl providing commands for data conversion,
message digests, zlib based compression, error-correction,
	 channel-based manipulation of binary data.

Trf extends the language at the C-level with so-called
``transformer''-procedures. With the help of some patches (*) to the
core the package is able to intercept all read/write operations
on designated channels, thus giving it the ability to transform
the buffer contents as desired. This allows things like
	 transparent encryption, compression, charset recoding,
etc. Build upon this framework (and as proof of concept) a
collection of tcl-level commands was implemented. Additionally
some binary data support is put in as well.

A separate package containing encryption transformation is available
at the same site carrying this package.

(*) The patches are only necessary for Tcl 8.0.x and 8.1.x. Since
Tcl 8.2 the Trf patch is an official part of the core.

Changes from 2.0p5 to 2.0p6

* Bugfixes

	 - in the TEA configure related to md5-crypt (Sigh).
	 - A memory leak.

* Better/more support for building Trf as static library.

The distribution can be found at

Subject: ANNOUNCE: GVI: The Graphical Voter Interface
paielli@...
Send Email Send Email

GVI, the Graphical Voter Interface, is a GUI (graphical user interface)
for voting. It has a BSD-style open-source license and can potentially
be used in most private or public elections. It can handle write-ins and
multi-language elections, and it can automate voting along party lines.

GVI can be used for Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) and Proportional
Representation (PR), advanced voting systems that allow each voter to
rank the candidates (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) according to preference. IRV
and PR are the most important advances in the mechanics of democracy
since voting itself, because they give minor parties a fair chance (see
http://www.fairvote.org).

This is not just another application. It goes right to the heart of
democracy. If you think the Democrats and Republicans need some
competition, then check this one out. I am an aerospace research
engineer, and I did this in my free time. It is my first-ever release
of an application for public use, so I'm sure it can use some work, but
I think you will like it.

The code can be found on my homepage at
http://home.pacbell.net/paielli/GVI-1.0.tar.gz. So far I have only
tested it on Unix, but it shouldn't be too much trouble for someone who
knows MS Windows (i.e., someone other than me) to get it running on
Windows. Have fun!

#586 From: Eric Melski <ericm@...>
Date: Wed Mar 8, 2000 6:08 am
Subject: ANNOUNCE: tcllib, the Tcl Standard Library
ericm@...
Send Email Send Email

In response to popular demand, the Tcl core group is introducing tcllib,
a Tcl standard library. This meta-package will contain many modules,
each of which is itself a standalone Tcl package. The intention is to
provide commonly used functions and libraries, bundled together under a
single license (BSD), and with no binary dependencies. This will
encourage use and growth of the library. Once tcllib is downloaded and
installed, users will be able to "package require tcllib" or
"package require any_module_in_tcllib".

Releases of tcllib will be made mostly independently of releases of the
Tcl/Tk core. This will allow a faster release cycle, which is important
in the early stages of development. It is possible that future releases
of the core will include a snapshot of the tcllib.

Initially, we have seeded the library with several modules, some written
in-house at Scriptics and by the core group:

   * struct: Tcl implementations of common data structures
   * profiler: Function level Tcl profiler
   * cmdline: getopt style command-line parser
   * base64:    base64 encoder/decoder
   * fileutil: Tcl implementations of file utilities (grep, find, ...)
   * pop3:      pop3 client
   * math: math functions (min, max, ...)

We want this to be a community-driven library, so we encourage submissions
to this library. If you have a function or set of functions that you find
you use frequently, send it in! Ultimately, we want community members to
be responsible for modules in tcllib, having CVS write access directly to
specific modules in the tree. Please do not feel that you must have a
"complete" module in order to contribute -- individual functions are
welcome as well.

In order to encourage growth and use of tcllib, there are some ground
rules that modules added to tcllib must follow:

   * the module must be Tcl only: no C extensions. This minimizes the
barrier to use -- not everybody has the means or desire to compile
extensions. We may someday start another meta-package of C
     extensions.

   * The module must use a namespace for its commands and variables
   * The module must be a proper Tcl package
   * The name of the package must be the same as the name of the namespace
   * The module must be released under the BSD license. If you cannot
accept the terms of that license, please feel free to release your
package independently of the tcllib. We feel that this license (the
same one that Tcl itself is under) is the most conducive to use.

   * The module should have both documentation (in XML or man form) and a
test suite. The module _must_ have either documentation or a test
     suite, and preferably both.

   * The module should adhere to Tcl coding standards. See:
	 http://dev.scriptics.com/doc/

   * The module should be of general use to a large number of programmers.
We don't want tcllib to become the dumping ground for every tcl
     programmer's personal, highly specialized functions.

We feel that these rules will help to encourage contribution to the
library and use of the library. Remember that almost everybody can use
the BSD license, and not everybody is willing or able to compile
extensions. Our ultimate goal is to encourage the use of Tcl by
providing a broad, robust library of functionality.

The current status of tcllib is open alpha. We would like users to
check out the current module, and see what they could add. After some
period of discussion (a couple of weeks), we'd like to settle on
something for an initial 1.0 release.

With regards to stdtcl, tcllib superceeds that module. Some of the
packages from stdtcl were moved into tcllib, some were not. Those that
were not were left out because they did not follow one or more of the
guidelines above. cgitcl, for example, is not in a namespace. ftpd
lacks documentation and a test suite. tcldebugger is only really useful
to people with tclpro debugger. Proper replacements for these would be
welcome.

Combat -- A Tcl language mapping for CORBA
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I am pleased to announce the availability of Combat (formerly TclMico)
version 0.6. Please visit its home page at

   http://www.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de/~fp/Tcl/Combat/

Combat is a loadable Tcl module that seamlessly integrates Tcl and Tk
into the world of CORBA. It provides a complete Tcl language mapping,
so that you can access and implement CORBA servers with Tcl's usual
productivity.

   - Straightforward IDL to Tcl mapping.
   - Client-side scripting.
   - Server-side scripting with full POA support.
   - Asynchronous invocations.
   - Extensive test suite and easy-to-understand demos.

Combat requires Tcl 8.0.3 (8.1 is recommended) and a CORBA 2.3-compliant
ORB with a C++ mapping (for example, MICO). For server-side scripting,
you also need [incr Tcl] 3.0.

On the home page above, you will find for download

   - the Combat source code,
   - a ready-to-run Tcl loadable module for Win32,
   - documentation in ps and pdf format,
   - a graphical administration tool for your CORBA Naming Service,
   - an Interface Repository Browser,
   - as added goodie, a standalone iordump tool.

Previous users of TclMico should read the file PORTING that comes with
the source distribution, which describes the user-visible differences
from the last version.

We here in the Dallas, North Texas, area are going to attempt
to resurrect the Tcl User's Group.

Presently, we are in the infancy stages and are looking for a
place to meet. Once that's accomplished, we'll move on
with other stuff.

We hope to serve the Tcl community in this area the best we
can. We hope to get visits from the Tcl dignitaries like John O.
Jeffrey H. George H. Michael M. etc. etc. etc. over the course
of time. But, our primary goal will be to promote Tcl/Tk by
its use where ever we can and making our own sessions of
how to do "such & such".

There's no way to predict whether we'll survive, or not, but
there's a few of us that will give it our best shot.

If your in this area, please join. Don't know if we'll have any
costs, so we don't know if there'll be any membership fees.

When we meet for the first time, I'd like to discuss formulating
the group into a regional one, incompassing "North Texas"
instead of just Dallas. If we do that I think we can entice
more to join us, and if that ever grows out of proportion, say
in the year 2005, then we can split back into smaller groups.

I'd like more members. I'd like feedback. I'd like ideas.

Hell . . . . . :^) :^) :^) :^) :^) I'd like a millioin dollars!

Hi,

I just uploaded tkGeoMap1.3. This is the latest version of my software
for drawing and interacting with geographic maps in tcl/tk under X11. It
draws dots and outline maps, and allows users to bind events to them. It
is not meant to be a full-featured GIS, rather it is for people who want a
relatively quick and simple way to produce geographic maps. I use it in
my meteorology work.

Source code, documentation, and screen shots are available through

Hi everybody: here is a new version of moodss.

Check it out! (or at least the screenshots at
http://jfontain.free.fr/moodss3.gif or
http://jfontain.free.fr/moodss4.gif :).

Note: versions 10.x and above releases are for Tcl/Tk 8.3, with
corresponding releases using the 8.x version numbering for Tcl/Tk
8.0. Once Tcl/Tk 8.3 becomes part of the main Linux distributions,
development of the 8.x versions will stop.

### CHANGES ###

--- version 8.13 ---
added snmptrap module (requires scotty to be installed)
data cells can now be multiline (can contain one or more \n
characters) and be properly displayed in data tables
when any (synchronous or asynchronous) module is updated, a
corresponding message (one for each module) is displayed at the
   bottom of the main window
added --title option to snmp module
random module now generates multiline data
successfully tested with BLT 2.4p (official and stubs enabled
   versions)

### README ###

This is moodss (Modular Object Oriented Dynamic SpreadSheet) version
8.13. Moodss is implemented in the great Tcl language (requires at
least versions 8.0 of Tcl and Tk, for UNIX or Windows).

Moodss won in the Best System Admin Technology category (Tcl Tips and
Tricks, Valuable Real World Programming Examples) at the O'Reilly
Tcl/Tk Conference on August 24, 1999.

Moodss is a modular application. It displays data described and
updated in one or more modules loaded when the application is
started. Data is originally displayed in tables. Graphical views
(graph, bar, 3D pie charts, ...), summary tables (with current,
average, minimum and maximum values) and free text viewers can be
created from any number of table cells, originating from any of the
displayed viewers.

A thorough and intuitive drag'n'drop scheme is used for most viewer
editing tasks: creation, modification, type mutation, destruction,
... Table rows can be sorted in increasing or decreasing order by
clicking on column titles. The current configuration (modules, tables
and viewers geometry, ...) can be saved in a file at any time, and
later reused through a command line switch, thus achieving a dashboard
functionality.

The module code is the link between the moodss core and the data to be
displayed. All the specific code is kept in the module package. Since
module data access is entirely customizable (through C code, Tcl,
HTTP, ...) and since several modules can be loaded at once,
applications for moodss become limitless. For example, one can
compare a remote database server CPU load and a network load from a
probe on the same graph, or build a dashboard of CPU and memory
utilization for a group of servers.

Apart from a sample module with random data, ps, cpustats, memstats,
diskstats, mounts, route, arp, kernmods modules for Linux, ping, snmp
and snmptrap for UNIX, apache and apachex modules are included
(running "wish moodss ps cpustats memstats" mimics the "top"
application with a graphic edge). Module contibutions are of course
welcomed and will be included in my home page.

Thorough help is provided through menus, widget tips, a message area,
a module help window and a global help window with a complete HTML
documentation.

Development of moodss is continuing and as more features are added in
future versions, backward module code compatibility will be maintained.

I cannot thank the authors of tkTable, BLT, wcb and the HTML library
enough for their great work.

In order to run moodss, you need to install the following packages
(unless you can use the rpm utility, see below):
obviously Tcl/Tk 8.0 at (or at a mirror near you)
   http://www.scriptics.com/ or ftp://ftp.scriptics.com/
the latest tkTable widget library at:
   http://www.hobbs.wservice.com/tcl/main.html
and the latest BLT library at:
   http://www.tcltk.com/pub/blt/
(see the INSTALL file for complete instructions, for UNIX and also
Windows platforms).

You also have the option of using the moodss rpm file (also in my
homepage), if you are using a Redhat Linux system (5.1 or above). The
required tcl, tk and blt rpms are part of the Redhat distribution,
whereas the tktable rpm can be found at:
ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/contrib/libc5/i386/tktable-2.2-1.i386.rpm.

Whether you like it (or hate it), please let me know. I would like to
hear about bugs and improvements you would like to see. I will correct
the bugs quickly, especially if you send me a test script (module code
with a data trace would be best).

###

you may find it now at my homepage:

http://jfontain.free.fr/moodss-8.13.tar.gz
http://jfontain.free.fr/moodss-8.13-1.i386.rpm
http://jfontain.free.fr/moodss-8.13-1.src.rpm

a bit later at:

ftp://contrib.redhat.com/libc6/i386/moodss-8.13-1.i386.rpm

or somewhere in:

ftp://ftp.neosoft.com/pub/tcl/

Enjoy and please let me know what you think.

March 19, 2000

I am pleased to announce the release of XBIT v2.4,
an extension of Tcl and Tk for image acquisition,
processing, presentation and production. A free package
of XBIT (binary) and its related Tcl scripts documents are
available at http://www.geocities.com/~chengye/soft.html

This release is the XBIT v2.4, an update of XBIT v2.3.
The changes include:

1) Modified code to be compatible to the Tcl/Tk 8.3.0.

2) Added a new color binning capability into "rimage gisoc"
to enhance the initial classification with the option -sb.

3) Integrated a pixel table into "rimage gisoc" to efficiently handle
    8bit image classifition with a multi-dimentional histogram.

4) Modified text editor "tedit" to support program source code editing.
Only those files with a ".doc" extension will be saved as tagged text
widget documentation. All other text files will be saved as pure text
    files.

5) Included a modified bgerror.tcl to prevent "hanging up" in wish's
error reporting when the main window is iconified.

6) Fixed a bug in Xbit package installation.

The updated DLLs include xbit76e.zip, xbit80e.zip, xbit81e.zip, xbit82e.zip
and xbit83e.zip for tcl7.6, 8.0, 8.1, 8.2.1 and 8.3.0 respectively. Other
updated files include xbitlib.zip and xbitdoc.zip.

XBIT is based on Tcl/Tk. The author is grateful to Scriptics
Corporation and Tcl community for their efforts in developing
and supporting Tcl/Tk. Reading and writing JPEG images are
handled with the library routines developed by the Independent
JPEG group. Reading and writing TKPHOTO images are benefited
from the Tk photo originally written by Paul Mackerras,
as well as its Img extension written by Jan Nijtmans. Utilities
for compressing and decompressing scripts have used the zlib
library written by Jean-loup Gailly and Mark Edler.

WHAT: tktable v2.6alpha, 2D editable table/matrix widget

WHERE: http://www.purl.org/net/hobbs/tcl/capp/
	 in CVS see http://dev.scriptics.com/software/tcltk/netcvs.html
	 module name is "tktable"

REQUIREMENTS: Tcl/Tk8.0+, compiling is required
		 Compiles everywhere Tk does!

This isn't the final 2.6 release, but it does have several bug fixes
since 2.5. The big change is that the source structure was completely
revamped, stubs support was added, and the whole thing is now in the
Tcl Developer Xchange CVS repository.

I've successfully compiled this version with stubs support (same DLL
works with 8.1+) on Windows, AIX, Solaris, Linux, HP and IRIX. I'm
sure to have botched the Mac projects, but if someone wants to look
at it and fix them for the new structure, that'd be great.

BASIC FEATURES:
  * multi-line cells
  * support for embedded windows (one per cell)
  * variable width columns / height rows (interactively resizable)
  * row and column titles
  * multiple data sources ((Tcl array || Tcl command) &| internal caching)
  * supports standard Tk reliefs, fonts, etc.
  * x/y scrollbar support
  * 'tag' styles per row, column or cell to change
    colors, font, relief, image, etc...
  * in-cell editing - returns value back to data source
  * support for disabled (read-only) tables or cells (via tags)
  * multiple selection modes, with "active" cell
  * optional 'flashes' when things update
  * cell validation support
  * Windows and Mac support
  * Unicode support (8.1+)

Subject: ANN: AlphaTk release 7.3b11 -- a tcl/tk text editor
vincentdarley@...
Send Email Send Email

After numerous improvements and fixes in the last month or so, I've
placed another release of AlphaTk at:

ftp://ftp.ucsd.edu/pub/alpha/tcl/alphatk/

in either .zip or .tar.gz form.

------------------

AlphaTk is a text editor, useful for editing Tcl/Tk, TeX, Java, C, C++,
HTML etc. (about 20 'modes' are provided). It has decent syntax
colouring, automatic indentation/code-formatting, word/command-
completion (avoids typos...), unlimited undo/redo, sophisticated
search/replace functionality, and can interact with common applications
(e.g. send a web page to your browser, compile a java file, run
procheck on a .tcl file, perform a diff, send commands to a separate
tcl/tk interpreter, upload .html files to your web-server,...)

For more information, please see the documentation which comes with
it. It should run fine on Unix/Windows with Tcl 8.1 or newer. It may
run ok on MacOS (see readme for details).

It is shareware, but until a first complete release is available, it
can be used completely for free.

-----------------

Recent changes:

7.3b11 - released

Allow save to pretend to be 'save as' when the window as never been
saved before.
Message when files are saved...
Replacement version of 'tkTextInsert' which doesn't use 'catch'
'balance' (cmd/alt-b) completely implemented now.
The 'funcs' menu {} in C/C++ modes now works nicely (there was a
regexp difference between Alpha 7.x and Tcl 8.x). The marks menu
still doesn't quite work for these modes.

7.3b10 - released

WWW menu actually works properly now. You can browse simple web pages
from within AlphaTk. Of course since www menu was created for Alpha,
it provides only limited web page display capabilities. Using one of
the existing html-widgets for Tk would be much better.
Delimiter matching now checks for unmatched delimiters in all cases,
and throws an appropriate error (should avoid all possible infinite
loops).
Better handling of windows created with strange names (including
directory delimiters etc.).
Added few more keysyms to those known from MacOS and converted to Tk.

7.3b9 - released

AlphaTcl improvements as ever
Workaround for windoze titlebar fonts not containing ellipsis
Implemented autoSave/changesLim.
Fix to silly problem with submenus whose name contains '.'
Better error reporting when trying to use commands which require
an open window when there isn't an open window.
More robust handling of original icon names for toplevel menus
to avoid possible name clashes with internal submenus. Avoids
potential infinite loops.
Better beginningOfLine, endOfLine, beginningOfBuffer, endOfBuffer.
Alpha can occasionally get into very long (and perhaps infinite?)
loops searching for matching braces/parentheses etc. You should
now be able to stop these with Alt-. (Mod1-.). Actually it doesn't
quite work, because these loops never let the event loop in...
Diff mode handles win pathnames and window movement a little better.
The core .tcl and Help files (which are stored in macRoman encoding),
are now transparently converted to/from that encoding when editing
them using AlphaTk. (They always were decoded when using 'source').
This will form the beginning of encoding support for arbitrary files,
so you can edit any encoding from within AlphaTk.
Better compatibility with Alpha w.r.t. 'goto' and stuff like that.
The electric templates stuff should now work very well (before it
worked ok-ish, with various "quirks").
Cmd-keys now match in dialogs: the first button or checkbutton which
begins with the key pressed is activated (e.g. Alt-S matches the first
button starting with 'S' on windows).
www menu almost working in AlphaTk

7.3b8 - released

I noticed a problem with preferences saving -- it could be possible
for preferences to be saved in two forms, both with and without the
leading '::'. This could only occur for array element preferences
(e.g. your Current Project if document projects package is on).
To fix this, open your 'arrdefs.tcl' preferences file, and globally
replace '(::' by '('. The problem should not reoccur. Alternatively,
simply remove the entire file if you don't mind losing the saved
items.
Improvements to multisearch code (e.g. quick find backwards works).
Better windows-specific file opening code.
Added command in fileUtils menu to associate a given file type with
Alpha (so you can double click on files to open them). This only
works on Windows right now. The menu command will associate the
extension of the currently open window with AlphaTk.

7.3b7 - released

Exit is ultimately via 'destroy .' not 'exit'. This works around
a bug in MacTk (it seems), and is perhaps a better way to go all
round.
New options to 'dialog' command to avoid destruction/recreation
of the entire dialog for each 'Set...' button pressed. Works
for most items now (all except 'SearchPath' prefs, I believe).
'dialog' is also now re-entrant, which makes such hierarchical
dialogs more useful.
Fixed confusion between nativename/not of files after 'saveAs'.
Made listpick dialog scroll to display the selected item.
Windows whose associated files have been modified behind AlphaTk's
back now receive a green icon in the top right.
saveAs now defaults to directory of second from top window if top
window hasn't ever been saved.
Learnt some focus/dialog/parent interaction from comp.lang.tcl,
so fixed various dialogs so they have proper parents, and avoids
problems with focus always going to '.'

7.3b6 - released

Better multiline searching, including better handling of patterns
which can match the empty string, even if only in certain locations
(e.g. ^...*$ which can match empty lines of text only).

Further fixes to searching, and colouring: now always uses singleline
searching which means it's fast even if the multiline feature is
turned on.

Subject: ANNOUNCE: Threads in Tcl/Tk, Metawidgets, and more
mmg_kraus@...

I dare to go public with the packages we use in some of our projects...
Comments, critique, bug reports are of course welcome.

WHERE:

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/mmg_kraus/TclCornr.htm

WHAT:

mkWidgets:
Written in pure Tcl without other package dependencies. Provides a method
for defining metawidgets (no, not megawidgets. That's owned by Mr. Hobbs
;-), i.e. potentially complex widgets that consist of several regular
widgets. In addition, a collection of metawidgets, e.g. a grid and a tree
control, is included. Screenshots for Windows
(http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/mmg_kraus/demoWin.gif ) and Linux
(http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/mmg_kraus/demoLin.gif ) available.

mkThreads:
Adds thread support to Tcl and Tk. Conceptually similar to the testthread
command as described on Scriptic's web site, but completely new developed
with additional features. Works on Windows, Linux and on other Unixes.

mkGeneric:
Just a small collection of new commands that I miss in the standard core.
Many new list commands, two new loop types and new math expressions. Also a
"try" command, an option parser, and a command to comment out blocks of
code ( like the /* */ in C ) etc.

mkClasses:
Provides a(nother) way for object oriented programming with Tcl. Classes
and methods can be defined, and objects can be created with private and
class-common variables. Classes can inherit the functionality of other
classes.

mkTables:
A collection of Tcl commands that allow for operating on tables (i.e.,
regular Tcl lists where each of the elements is itself a proper sublist).
The commands provide column oriented manipulations and are in most cases
similar to the command names for regular lists: The equivalent to lindex is
tindex and so on.

REQUIREMENTS:

Tcl/Tk 8, since the extensions (written in C) make intense use of the
Tcl_Obj* structs introduced with 8.0. The packages run on Windows NT and
Linux 2.2. The should run without trouble on other Windozes and
Unixes. Most of them are stubs enabled.

### README ###

Tkpiechart is a Tcl only library which allows the creation of pies
with labels in Tcl canvases.

This is version 6.2(5.4). It was tested with Tcl/Tk 8.3(8.0) on both
Linux and
Windows platforms (it should work on all Tcl/Tk supported platforms).

It is object oriented using the stooop (Simple Tcl Only Object
Oriented Programming) extension (version 4.1(3.7) or above, tcl file
included).

Run the demo script to see what it looks like, read the man pages to
understand how to use it.

Whether you like it (or hate it), please let me know. I would like to
hear about bugs and improvements you would like to see. I will correct
the bugs quickly, especially if you send me a test script.

If you find a bug in the Tcl code and correct it yourself, please
email the modified code so I can include it in the next release. The
same goes for improvements.

### README ###

This is moodss (Modular Object Oriented Dynamic SpreadSheet) version

###

you may find it now at my homepage:

http://jfontain.free.fr/moodss-8.14-1.i386.rpm
http://jfontain.free.fr/moodss-8.14-1.src.rpm

a bit later at:

ftp://contrib.redhat.com/libc6/i386/moodss-8.14-1.i386.rpm

or somewhere in:
