Yes.

We're just finishing up TealTime, a world clock/stopwatch/timer app, and our
second for the Palm Pre. The first was TealShopper, a supercharged task list
app with subcategories and prices. We're waiting to get our apps into Palm's
beta store. If we can get some apps up and generating some income, we can start
some larger projects like porting over TealAuto to webOS, which is often
requested.

Does anybody here have the development ROMs and might be interested in doing
some beta testing? Alternatively, is anybody here familar with the homebrew
installers and whether we can use this to send you beta versions?

Also, for you Palm Pre users out there, what's the thought on pricing? What
would be fair for different types of apps? iPhone apps seem like they are often
much cheaper than PalmOS ones were, but then again a lot of them are throwaway
apps. Keep in mind that Palm will take 30% and our major onging cost is for
support. It costs us about $4 on average to answer an email.

We've been buried in development and haven't had a chance to explore these
issues, but please help us put together some really nice webOS apps.

Subject: Approved - TealShopper for webOS
tealtex

Good news!

Palm just approved TealShopper, our shopping/errand/task manager app for webOS
for sale on their Palm store. Hopefully it will appear in the catalog shortly!

It seems like Palm has really worked hard to make submission process friendly to
developers, and because of this, our current plan is to develop more webOS apps.

With this announcement, I thought I'd share some thoughts about our future
development roadmap, since we've been getting many emails about us adding
support for webOS, iPhone, Blackberry, and other new platforms.

Here is a summary of our thoughts:

webOS

Palm charges $99 per year plus $50 per app to develop for webOS. The fees are
actually a good thing for commercial developers like us, as they help control
the flood of "hobbyist" apps that have inundated the iPhone store.

In addition, Palm has created tools to develop for webOS under Linux, Mac, or
(our preference) Windows, and uses standard technologies/languages (Javascript,
CSS, HTML).

The real plus for us, however, is the refreshingly fair way Palm has set up the
approval process. There is a clear list of criteria you must meet when
submitting an app to Palm. When an app is rejected, Palm gives a clear report
of issues found, the ability to resubmit after making necessary changes, and the
presumption that an app will be accepted once all the issues are resolved. Best
of all, however, is the speed of the process, which so far for us has taken
anywhere from a single day to two weeks to get feedback on a submitted changes.

All these factors make webOS our current platform of choice. We'll see how
Palm's policies actually translate into sales, however. We're almost done with
TealTime, and will likely start TealAuto for webOS next.

iPhone

Despite Apple's mammoth marketing muscle, the iPhone market, we understand, can
be a challenging place to sell apps. Apple uses a proprietary language for
development (obj-c) and require Macs for development, and seems to have actively
destroyed any efforts by others to create third party development tools that run
on other platforms.

The real problem, however, is the marketplace itself. The store seems to have
become overrun recently by cheap throwaway apps. While a few apps sell
extremely well, many other quality ones get lost in the growing sea of apps,
reportedly only earning a few hundred dollars. As a result, we understand
developers are now resorting to "gaming" the store, releasing trivial updates to
keep on the "what's new" list. This process seems oddly reminiscent of the
PalmOS market in later years, and we expect the situation to get worse as more
and more apps compete for shrinking slices of the iPhone app software market.

Another roadblock, however, is Apple's anti-developer policies. Apple reserves
the right to reject apps for any reason, or no stated reason or response at all,
and seems to do this quite often.  Even worse, they take a long time to respond;
six months, reported one former PalmOS developer. Since developers cannot
guarantee they will even be allowed to sell their apps at all, many are
understandably reluctant to put a lot of effort into developing a complex app.

Because of the high cost of entry, the stiff competition (for eyeballs), and the
potential of not being able to see any return on investment, we are holding off
developing for iPhone for now.

Blackberry

Blackberry devices run Java applets. We aren't Java programmers, which is a
significant barrier. It can also be a lot of work to create an attractive
interface in Java.

Symbian

As we understand, Symbian is a low level operating system for phone makers, but
the interface that third party apps use varies greatly from model to model
device. Because of this, apps usually need to be written specifically for each
model device. It would be very hard for us to do this cost effectively except
for the simplest of apps.

Android

We're not sure about Android. We have some concerns that its Open Source
origins might lead to a lot of free open source apps that will "poison" the
market for future commercial apps. We're also not sure if Android's "geek"
appeal might lead to a largely techie customer base that might be more likely to
hack or roll their own apps instead of purchasing them. Still, it's hard to bet
against Google, and Verizon seems to be getting behind the platform as well.
We'll probably take a second look at Android in the future once we see what
happens with webOS.

PalmOS and Windows Mobile

We'll continue to support our PalmOS and Windows Mobile apps, fixing bugs and
resolving issues where necessary, but new apps for these platforms will be
unlikely for the near future, except for quick ports of TICL-based apps
(TealDoc, TealPaint, etc) to Windows Mobile if there is sufficient interest.

thanks,

Subject: TealShopper for Sale / Pricing
tealtex

TealShopper 1.0.3 is now for sale on the Palm App Store. A quick fix for long
lists (1.0.4) has been submitted and should soon be up. I don't know why the
screenshots are missing, but we'll try to get Palm to fix this.

A number of you have commented on the lack of info about TealShopper on the web
site. I apologize. We've been concentrating on development first, and hope to
at least add a TealShopper page to the web site soon.

Lastly, that for those of you who have sent us your thoughts and support
regarding pricing of webOS apps. I thought you might be interested in a recent
Newsweek article detailing the recent souring of developer experiences with the
iTunes App Store.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/216788

In summary, it's not that the store itself is doing poorly, but that the flood
of new (and mostly cheap or free) apps at the store--due largely to over-hyping
by the press and Apple--have made it now a very challenging environment for
developers. It seems that even many developers that were celebrated as early
successes on that platform are now struggling to stay profitable.

Hopefully, Palm will avoid the "more and cheaper is better" mentality when
managing their own store, and will limit the forces that will drive app prices
down and the numbers up too fast.

I think this is a question you should post at precentral.net. You will get tons
of replies and great input. For what I see, there is a cry for a great mileage
tracker application:
http://forums.precentral.net/webos-apps-software/198110-app-request-mileage-trac\
ker.html

I am sure there has to be a number of former TealAuto users for the Palm and
Windows Mobile who would purchase a webOS version. There have been a couple of
mileage applications released for webOS, but nothing like TealAuto.

I am not a developer and don't know how much you should charge for such an
application. But one thing to keep in mind is that a number of your
Palm/Windows Mobile users probably have/had the desktop version. For me it
would be huge to be able to sync with the desktop version. The maintenance
tracker is also huge. Maybe you could develop a "lite" version that only tracks
mileage and a "pro" version that tracks maintenance and allows sync with desktop
version. As a "former" owner of both the Palm and Windows Mobile versions, I
would pay almost anything for a webOS version that has all the capabilities that
we are accostumed now. I am tired of keeping copies of everything and entering
them on the desktop when I get home.

I agree with what cash1970 said. Check out the precentral.net website. actually
that's how I found your first app and this group page.

I'm very interested in the Teal Auto app especially for maintenance tracking.
There's nothing in the Palm catalog currently that could do this.

I know many developers use the homebrew scene at Precentral to "preview" a lite
version of their apps. Many users seem to like this aspect of homebrew.

If your still looking for beta testers let me know, i'd be willing to help out.

From the overwhelming response, I think a version of TealAuto is a strong
possibility for the next app we'll do. Off the top of my head I think we'd do
the full version right away, as there aren't too many apps in the App Store yet,
so visibility is not a problem.

I'm not sure about how we'd handle synching, or if we'd have to add it in an
update. I believe apps can only communicate with the outside world through the
web, so it would be tricky to do. Javascript is also not the ideal language to
deal with the binary data format used by the desktop, palmos, and windows mobile
versions of the app. At the very least we'd allow you to export reports either
to a web page or via email, but we haven't looked into how that part of webOS
works yet.

The only thing holding us up right now from fully moving on to the next project
is getting our existing apps approved. Palm is apparently very backlogged right
now but is working hard to clear the log jam, probably to coincide with the
release of the Palm Pixi. There must be a lot of apps about to go into the
store.

The version of TealShopper in the store was an initial version we had to write
months ago using only the simulator. Even though we submitted a new version
soon after with lots of improvements and fixes to all reported bugs, we're still
waiting for it to make it into the store. If any of you have the older version
and know how to install apps through developer mode, contact us directly and we
can send you an ipk with the patched files. Also please consider helping us out
with good reviews, as this will really help support our webOS efforts.

We also have a new app TealTime, that we've submitted and are waiting a
response. We added a page on our site today, so check it out at
www.tealpoint.com/softime.htm .

That is very good news. Your mileage tracking, maintenance log, and trip log
are
invaluable for me. It is awesome that at tax time all I have to do is print a
report.

Would it be possible to something similar to what Chapura Pocket Mirror does to
sync?
That is what I use to sync my Pre with MS Outlook. From their website:

"How it Works

PocketMirror Standard provides wireless synchronization over your local area
Wi-Fi
network. The synchronization and data transfers are made only over the local
network,
Calendar and Contact information is never passed over the internet. The PC and
Pre must
be connected to the same Wi-Fi network and Wi-Fi is required to use this
product."

I'll be checking out your other products...and feel free to contact me if you
need any beta testers.

Hello, I'm new to this group. I've had Teallock on my Centro for a while now.
In the past,I've mainly used autolock. I'm now trying automatic hide/mask of
private records but it does not seem to be working. Regardless of the setting,
Teallock does not seem to keep private records marked as MASK.

I have the following settings:
- btwn 12:00Am to 11:59PM
- 0 mins after power off
- 0 mins after last activity
- if powered up between 12:00AM and 11:59PM
- on reset

If I understand correctly, with the above settingd, any Palm record
marked as private should eventually end up MASKed.

Help on how this feature works is greatly appreciated !

I found the answer here:

deleted orphaned prefs then reinstalled Teallock. AutoHide now works.

Hi. The encoding codec uses brute force pattern matching, so it's kind of slow.
On my pc it takes about 10 times the actual play time to encode a video.

Here are some other tips: AVIs are a shell format that use separate codecs to
decode video, and that the TealMovie encoder uses Microsoft's Video for Windows
media services to decode the video. This means that you need to have the
appropriate VFW (16-bit) codec installed for whatever encoding scheme is used in
a video. Windows Media Player doesn't use VFW codecs anymore, but uses the
DirectShow (32-bit) play-only codecs instead. So if you run into problems where
you can play a video in WMP but can't see it in TealMovie, you may need to
download the appropriate VFW codec for Windows. The freeware utility G-Spot is
useful for detecting which codecs of either kind are installed on your PC

Tex,

Any chance that an item in TealShopper for WebOS could be assigned to a specific
store? There are several items that I can only purchase at a specific store.
The ability to filter items by the store I am in would be great. I am presently
using another product under Classic and would really like to go with a TealPoint
product because of the support you provide.

Thanks

Any guess as to when the WebOS version of TealAuto will be released? I have a

Classic is ok for the short term, however an app designed for finger use is the
best!

Subject: TealTracker Reports Question

Send Email Send Email

Greetings,

I am a long time registered user of many, many great Teal Software Programs. As
you consider the future of Teal software, I am hopefull that you don't forget
about incorporating Palm OS in any changes or future products, but I am thankful
for what I have gotten so far.

I use TealTracker on my TX and also on my Windows desktop. The problem I am
finding is that I often work varied shifts and charge different rates based on
overtime as well as day/night hours. I am trying to find the easiest way to
create a report that shows the hours reported on the day they were worked.

When I work a shift for two weeks, Monday - Friday starting 7:00 pm and ending
7:00 am the next day, I log the start and end on the same item for different
days, but the reports show all of the hours on the same day, when they are
actually spread over the two days. I am required to submit reports showing
hours by calendar day. Is it possible to create a report that would show
something like:

Monday, 19:00 - 24:00: 5 hours
Monday Total: 5 hours

Tue, 00:01 - 07:00: 7 hours
Tue, 15:00 - 24:00: 9 hours
Tuesday Total: 16 hours

Wed, 00:01 - 05:00: 5 hours
Wed, 19:00 - 24:00: 5 hours
Total: 10 hours

Thu, 00:01 - 10:00: 10 hours
Thu, 19:00 - 24:00: 5 hours
Total: 15 hours

Fri, 00:01 - 07:00: 7 hours
Fri, 19:00 - 24:00: 5 hours
Total: 12 hours

Grand Total: 58 hours

Currently, the reports show something like:

Mon, 19:00 - 07:00: 12 hours
Tue: 15:00 - 05:00: 14 hours
Wed: 19:00 - 10:00: 15 hours
Thu: 19:00 - 07:00: 12 hours
Fri: 19:00 - 24:00: 5 hours
      Total: 58 hours

Thanks,
Dwight...

Good idea. As with most things in webOS, the trick is fitting everything into
the already cramped interface. Essentially a store entry would be a kind of
second category, so we'd need a way to both select it and display this extra
information. We're open to suggestions on this.

presently using another product under Classic and would really like to go with a
TealPoint product because of the support you provide.

We're working on it now. It's slow going as we're also doing some contract
work, but it's underway. We're trying to make a common database platform that
will act as the basis for not only TealAuto, but several similar programs as
well.

Classic is ok for the short term, however an app designed for finger use is the
best!

deal with the binary data format used by the desktop, palmos, and windows mobile

Good idea.

Yeah, we really didn't consider the case of tasks spanning midnight and needing
to separate them by days, so right now it's not supported. The only way right
now to get such a report is to manually create a time split at midnight so that
the times appear separately. I'll make a note that this ought to be changed in
TealTracker, or at least made an option, as others might encounter it to.
Alternatively, we could add a simple function that goes through the database and
automatically add the split at midnight. This might be easier to implement with
the current code.

Either one of those options seems like it would be great.  Just the tone of the response, with the implication that there is hope for future development on any palm device, gives me great joy and happiness.  FWIW, I currently work around by setting the option to end "forgotten" tasks at midnight.

Thanks Again for the Great Products and Support!!!

Subject: TealAuto, TealTracker, TealPaint, etc on WebOS
tealtex

A lot of you have been asking about webOS versions of some of our apps, so we
wanted to give you a quick update:

PREVIOUS PROGRESS USING SDK

Up to this point, Palm has required apps to be written in Javascript in their
exclusive web-based SDK, which means that any apps would have to be re-written
from scratch to run under webOS. While we write six new apps for WebOS,
rewriting a sizeable app like TealAuto was quite an undertaking and we'd been
making only slow progress.

NEW PROGRESS USING PDK

Recently, however, they've released a beta version of their new PDK development
environment, which allows developers to compile native code for webOS. After
only a week of development, we've successfully ported over a rough version of
our TICL app framework to the PDK, and now have a working alpha version of
TealAuto running on the Palm Pre.

There is still much to do, however, as we need to alter the framework to add a
webOS look and feel. Also, there's also no way yet to get beta versions out to
you unless you're a developer. But be assured that apps based on our TICL
framework such as TealAuto, TealTracker, TealPaint, and others as well will be
on their way.

DATA COMPATIBILITY AND UPGRADING

These TICL apps will save and load data from the USB volume, so you'll be able
to use your data files from existing PalmOS/Windows Mobile versions. Palm
doesn't have an upgrade mechanism right now, but due to the low price points in
webOS, we'll likely set the full price below what we normally charge for an
update anyway.

FUTURE FOR HACKS AND SIMILAR APPS

However, webOS still restricts apps from communicating or interacting with other
apps. Because of this, it's still not possible to do webOS versions of apps
that interact with other apps or their data such as TealLock, TealBackup and
TealScript. Doing so would require breaking rules that must be met to get into
the online App Catalog, which makes this second type of app a financial
non-starter until Palm changes this policy.

Thanks,

Yes!! After two months of turmoil, we've finally gotten through the quirks and
bugs in the pdk submission process and gotten TealAuto into the Palm App
Catalog!

TealAuto for WebOS is our first app of many using the Palm PDK, and is fully
data-compatible with its PalmOS, WinMo, and PC cousins. Its interface will be
very familiar for users of the previous versions, though souped up graphically
to match the WebOS visual style of course. It is currently only available for
the Palm Pre and Palm Pre plus due to screen space requirements.

Please try the app, and if you like it, it would really help us if you would
post a 5-star review.

As usual, please contact us first if you run into any issues, suggestions, or
concerns. We'll continue to improve the app, so please let us know your
suggestions and findings first. We found a couple of bugs and minor limitations
in the current Palm PDK that we're prodding Palm to address, but we think you'll
really enjoy this new release:

TealAuto for WebOS is $4.99 and available on your phone in the App Catalog or
at:

http://developer.palm.com/webChannel/index.php?packageid=com.tealpoint.tealauto

PS: Next up... TealSafe for WebOS is already done but awaiting clearance from
the US Department of Commerce (because it uses encryption) before Palm will let
us sell it. TealTracker for WebOS is in an operational state but needs more
visual UI tweaks.

Excellent! I just downloaded, now I just need to export the data from my Centro
and import it.

One VERY minor bug, when entering a zero into the vehicle name field, instead of
the normal Orange button click then @ to get a zero, I had to hold the Orange
button and @ to get a zero. Not a big deal, just threw me for a minute.

Glad to see Teal Auto on WebOS.

We've already had TealSafe done internally for over a month, but haven't been
able to release it because Palm requires any apps with encryption to get
certified though the US Department of Commerce. We've started the process to
try to submit the proper forms, but never heard anything back.

Will fix it. The Palm PDK (unlike the SDK) actually does not support 2-press
shift functionality, so we had to implement our own and must have missed this.
