Search engine Optimization is a big business. Many people are trying
to get their site into the top 10 rank for the search engine(s) of
their choice. In past newsletters I've mentioned keywords and
descriptions. Those are great, and every site should have them. But,
some search engines don't just use keywords to rank a page...




Take search engine giant Google. They use keywords, sure. But they
also have this wonderful algorithm that does more before it ranks your
page. Google's "bot" also looks at what OTHER Internet sites (not
yours) link to your site. They call it "link popularity". The more
sites that point to your domain, the more "popular" your site must be.
It gets more in-depth than even that. Google also mathematically
decides the "value" of the links. For instance, a link from your
kid-brother's Geocities website will not have much value, whereas a
link from a high-traffic site (like Yahoo) would. There's so much to
learn.




I personally believe that buying programs or services that promise to
get you in the top 10 may be a waste of money. Find out about them.
Make sure they aren't just plunking your URL (that you worked hard to
get just right) into a script and hoping it works. Make sure that you
personally take the time (or pay someone trustworthy) to get your URL
on "valuable" pages.




For instance, if you are in the pen business, try to get your links on
complimentary sites. These might include ink distributors, plastics
manufacturers, and even pencil companies. Asking these companies for
a small link on their "links" page will only help your traffic flow!
Some may ask for a reciprocal link, which is only fair. (You don't
want to link to your distributors, though!)
