Another interesting resource is the Eurêka Web Directory. Many translators
believe that the "Holy Grail" of Internet searching is a full-text search
engine, specially designed for translators.

This specialized search engine does not exist yet. In order to create it,
one would have to start with a good, well-maintained Web directory because
search engines must crawl from a starting point.

For a private company, the cost of building such a Web directory would be
prohibitive. What translators need to develop, as a community, is a
specialized ODP (Open Directory Project). The Eurêka database is the perfect
tool for that purpose.

* It is entirely free. Non-profit, I believe.

* Membership is open to all, and a click away
(http://www.foreignword.com/Eureka/adm_login.asp).

* Searching through the whole database or a specific category is easy. Enter
a keyword, and all entries containing that keyword will be listed. You can
search by language pair, by specialty/domain, by author (e.g. "my name" to
obtain a list of "my" entries), etc.

* You can extract the whole database of links and descriptions by clicking
on the Search button and leaving the search field empty.

* Searching through mailing list archives is difficult. Contributing to the
Eurêka database is the most efficient way of sharing resources, for our
global community.

* The Eurêka database can be used as a personal bookmark organizer.

* You can enter records in any language you want.

* You can edit other people's records, for instance if the URL of a glossary
has changed.

* You can add a shortcut to the "Create new record" page in your Quick
Strart toolbar (beside the Start button in Windows). This will allow you to
bookmark new glossaries as you find them.

* New records are posted on the Eurêka mailing list
(http://fr.groups.yahoo.com/group/eureka/).

Mailing lists and personal bookmark pages are useful, but they can only
complete a specialized Web directory, not replace it. With 3,000,000
translators all over the world, we should be able to create a wonderful
library of links. Eventually, someone will invest in a crawling applicance
(like the Google Search Appliance), and we can have the full-text search
engine we all yearn for.
