Hi Rich;

Almost.

It was before that - it was "One-List".

Back in those days I was single.

Since then I've gotten married, have two grown kids, I've worked for 4
different companies, worn out 4 PC operating systems, 6 computers,3 digital
cameras and I'm on my 3rd vehicle. Still live in the same house, but the
historical society is starting to take interest. Retiring in a few years.

Hey, I don't feel that old, but since I can remember when Tim joined the

my AARP card?!?!

While the Sober worm spoofs the From: field, it doesn't disguise the
originating IP address (or it hasn't done so up till now). Mails generated
by it are consistently traceable to the IP address contained in the header
and so, in the case of most home PCs, potentially to a specific location. I
do know what I am talking about, by the way: I have been able to help rid a
number of PCs of this worm by using that information. In most cases the
owners were not aware that they had contracted the worm - it seems to do
nothing else but mail copies of itself to addresses found on the PC, so
victims might notice a slower connection and (if they knew where to look) an
increase in outgoing traffic but that is all.

> 2.) it doesnt mean this person is from the netherlands
In this case, I think it does (see above). I had several dozen mails from
the one location (which was a network name indicating a cable connection
from a Dutch ISP company). Most of the spoofed mail addresses in the From:
field were Dutch, though I have to say that I recognised none from the
Terragen list. Sober spoofs the From: field using addresses harvested from
a list of file types existing on the infected PC, so I could conclude that,
if not Dutch, the owner of the infected PC had strong connections in that
country.

> 3.) yes, very off topic.
I warned people that it was "off topic" (i.e. not about Terragen) in the
Subject line. This is only good netiquette, as I'm sure you're aware.
Though off topic, it was, nevertheless, a relevant message and I think your
flame was out of order. You may have been the only one to reply but the
source of my irritating yellow warning screens dried up very soon
afterwards. This, it is true, could have been a coincidence or a result of
the message I sent to Planet (to which they never replied).

> 4.) it doesnt need to be anyone whos even remotely on this
> list, addresses get harvested.
4.) I agree that addresses get harvested and it is quite possible that my
email address resides on several Dutch PCs without my knowledge, however, as
the Terragen list (and Terragenfriends) are the only two places where I
regularly correspond which also have a number of Dutch subscribers, it was
logical to issue the warning in the place where it was most likely to be
seen by the owner of the offending PC.

I am not one of those who issue warning messages at the drop of a hat. (I
am more often to be found educating people about using email, including the
proper way to deal with hoax mails and random virus warnings.) I hope you
will see from the above, though, that I felt I had a good and logical reason
to post in this particular instance.

yours sincerely,

Andrew Kendon

Hi Fras;

Enabled the Google Analytics, but it still wouldn't run. Hmmm. Seems that
there's an issue with Firefox sometimes needing Flash reinstalled after
upgrading. Since 1.07 was released and installed, I guess I had not
reinstalled Flash. Oddly enough, I didn't miss it either. 8-) I'm not
against Flash per se, but there seem to be more awful uses of it than there
are good ones. So I reinstalled it.

Re: your use of the Virtual Postcards - I like the content - especially the
trees you've added to Terragen and Mojo? Images. Mt Shuksan's North Face was
particularly good. The number and spacing of the trees seems close to the
real thing for that area.

Navigation is simple and direct. You can right-click as well for additional
enlargement/zooming if needed. The panning effect is novel.

Hi Tim,

A simple Google of Google Analytics would tell you that Google Analytics is
just another traffic monitor, this one run by, believe it or not, Google ;o)
. I'm sure that you're aware that many such services rely on embedded
Javascript snippets. If you want to prevent them from running, that's your
choice. I'm not that anal about my traffic monitoring, it's interesting to
see where the visitors come from and where they go (to a degree) but it's
not the end of the world if somebody opts out. I use Firefox too but I
guess I'm a bit more trusting than you (or I've got my setting screwed up).

Thanks for having a look. What did you think of the 'postcard' flash?
I know you've been down on Flash in the past (me too!) but this one seems
small and unobtrusive.

cheers

Hi Fras;

I can understand (and allow) scripting on that site from terrography.com,
but I'm curious about the scripts trying to run from google-analytics.com.

FWIW, I use Firefox and the "NoScript" plugin that allows me to be selective
about what scripts are allowed to run on any given page. The
google-analytics script and others are trapped and the user can permanently
or temporarily allow a set of scripts to run ... or not.

Hi All,

It's also good to see a few of the old 'faces' popping up to comment on this
thread. I've been more into photography recently than Terragen but I've
still got some of my work up at
www.terrography.com<http://www.terrography.com>
.

If anyone's interested, I've also been playing with a free Flash viewer from
Airtight Interactive (
http://www.airtightinteractive.com/projects/postcardviewer/) and, as an
experiment, I've also transferred my virtual work to a site based on that
viewer. I'm considering the pros and cons of moving my photos to that format
as well so, I'd appreciate and comments and thoughts. My experimental flash
based site is here http://photos.terrography.com/postcards/ .

BTW: This is a bit off topic so please send any responses to the
TerragenFriends list.

best regards
Fraser

Andrew;

Glad to be of assistance.

The beard is still there, and I am often in the area of the park. Anything
is possible with the internet and Photoshop. I understand about the internet
business and romantic dealings. I'm also in the final phase of getting $27
million posted to my bank account by a nice chap in Nigeria. Pity about his
family, but that's the breaks, eh?

Thanks for that link, Tim. I have been (perhaps unwisely) engaging in an
Internet friendship with a young lady who seems very personable. Having
checked out her driving licence, I can definitely say that I have been
hoodwinked.

You have saved me at least $3000 in air fares and hotel expenses, &c.

Ever grateful,

Andrew Kendon

PS ... I checked to see if yours had been removed yet. It seems these
things take time, however! My, your beard has grown a bit since last I saw a

The easy way is to assume all communications are spoofs.

In the current environment, no responsible organisation is going to
contact customers by e-mail for this sort of information. If any bank
I was with did, I'd close the account immediately.

none of my banks/credit cards/ebay/paypal legitimately try to contact me
through email..

1.) all the accounts are in my wifes name (as primary), so them
contacting me is a pretty good red flag
2.) all of our accounts have a message center in the account itself,
where the company contacts us
3.) never trust anything claiming to be something.

Hmm, I've just had one purporting to come from Lloyds-TSB (my bank). I
simply assume that my bank never sends me e-mail and deleted it. It,
too, had an address that was subtly different from what I would expect
but near enough to fool anyone a little less savvy.

To Oshyan, Bill and Peter,

This kind of mail is likely to come to anyone, which is why I sent my
message to most people in my address book. If you have no account with the
place it purports to come from then, of course, it is almost laughably easy
to eliminate. If you do have an account (as I do with Paypal), then it is
worrying to think that people a little less careful than myself might be
taken in by it.

Yes, Oshyan. You and I hover the mouse over the URL given (or look at the
HTML). I was concerned at how many of my friends might just click on the
link and follow the instructions on the screen. Unfortunately, I have now
deleted the mail but the real URL was much less obvious than the one you
gave as an example. It saddens me to think that that mail probably was sent
to tens of thousands of people. If only 1% of them went so far as to enter
their details, that's several hundred people who are poorer.

Andrew

Surf using a Linux machine or an Apple Mac - it's the only safe way.

Then the only exploits you need worry about are those using social
engineering.

Further proof (and this is the simple method I always use) is that the URL
is *never* actually www.paypal.com, which is where Paypal actually sends
you. There may be "www.paypal.com" in the URL they send you to, but it's
*always* prefixed by something else, often just an IP like
http://55.24.234.124/www.paypal.com/ That first part of the URL is your
biggest clue IMO. And since my mail reader shows me URL locations before I
click on them, I can tell right in my mail client that it's fake and not
even have to visit the site, which mind you might also attempt to install a
Trojan, spyware, or other nasty.

Friends,

I recently received a very convincing looking email which
purported to be from Paypal, with whom I have an account.
Here is an extract from the message:

	 "Dear valued PayPalR member,

Due to recent fraudulent transactions, we have issued
	 the following security requirements.

It has come to our attion that 98% of all fraudulent
transactions are caused by members using stolen
credit cards to purchase or sell non existant items.
Thus we require our members to add a Debit/Check card
to their billing records as part of our continuing
commitment to protect your account and to reduce the
instance of fraud on our website. Your Debit/Check card
will only be used to identify you. If you could please
take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and
renew your records you will not run into any future
problems with the PayPalR service. However, failure to
confirm your records will result in your account suspension."

There is a link to click to 'log in' to your Paypal account. If
you click on it it takes you to a form which is identical to the
Paypal login screen and if you enter your Paypal username and
password you then see a very official looking form in which to
enter your FULL credit card details - including your PIN number!

*** ON NO ACCOUNT SHOULD YOU USE YOUR REAL USERNAME OR PASSWORD
OR FILL IN YOUR DETAILS ON THIS FORM, HOWEVER CONVINCING THE
EMAIL SOUNDS. ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR BANK FIRST, EITHER BY
EMAIL OR PHONE ***

I proved that this was a spoof site by the simple trick of
entering a false email and password at the login. If it had
been a genuine Paypal login, it should have rejected my attempt!

There are a number of emails such as these circulating
purporting to be from legitimate banking facilities. Of course,
if you don't have an account with the institution it purports
to come from, you are unlikely to be fooled but if you do it
is very easy to be taken in.

*** IF YOU ARE IN DOUBT ABOUT THE VERACITY OF AN EMAIL LIKE THIS,
DO NOT CLICK ON ANY LINK IN THE EMAIL - INSTEAD, GO TO YOUR
BANK'S OFFICIAL WEBSITE AND LOOK AT THEIR SECURITY POLICY.

*** IF POSSIBLE, REPORT THE EMAIL TO THE BANK, COPYING THE
COMPLETE HEADER AND BODY OF THE MAIL IF YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS.
IF THERE IS NOT A FACILITY FOR THIS, SEND A QUERY TO CUSTOMER
SERVICES ASKING THEM TO CONFIRM THAT THIS IS A SPOOF.

Clues to identify a spoof mail
------------------------------
1) The mail is addressed "Dear customer" or some such, instead
of to you personally.

2) The contents of the mail, while appearing to encourage
security, ask you to enter personal details, suggesting that
your account will be disabled, perhaps, if you do not do so.

3) If you click the link to 'log in to your account' and enter a
FALSE (made-up) username and password, your log in is NOT rejected
but you see a form asking for full details.
