Grapes for Red Wine   Message List

Hi folks,
I'm new to the group. I am a long-time organic gardener, but I've
never grown grapes. I am a believer in the health benefits of
moderate wine drinking, and I desire to make my own good red
wine from my own vines. I live in Central Texas near Waco, and I
am planning a small vineyard adjacent to my garden. My soil is
fairly heavy, but it has good fertility. I am wondering what grape
varieties other Cen-Tex growers have had success with. I am
told that both Champanel and Black Spanish are possibilities for
my area, but I'm unsure about their qualities for wine making.
Can anyone comment?
Thanks. Good day, everyone.
Fred

Although I have never tried either in wines, I have shot the bull with a bunch of local growers that tell me that the Black Spanish makes a good sweet wine.....
