Re: [texasgrapes] Re: This group is in need of some Texas grape growers...

Hi Bryce,

I've been growing my vines for a couple of years. My mother's black
spanish vines are over 15 years old, which leads me to believe that it
is a very hearty vine. For bugs and grasshoppers (of which I have
plenty where I live east of Georgetown, Texas) I use Malathion, which is
pretty harmless to animals and humans. However, the grasshoppers got so
bad last year (I had what was referred to as an infestation ... and
biblical in proportions) that I just gave up and quit spraying. By June
I was spraying more than once a week, and I didn't want that much in the
way of chemicals on my property. I haven't used any fungicides, but
intend to dust with sulfur this year, and as for herbicides, I use
Roundup (the concentrate) and a good, old fashion hoe. I definitely am
careful not to get any of it on the vines. I use my hands to weed
around the vine, a hoe just outside the vines perimeter, and spray with
a funnel every where else. Hard work, but my vines are still alive,
even with all the damn hoppers.

Since my vines are not very old, and the grasshoppers are great in
numbers, I haven't had much in the way of a harvest. But as soon as I
do, I'll make my own wine.

Regards,
Will
