JAMES ROBERTSON'S NEWSLETTER

No 13, November 2007

Dear Eric,

My latest newsletter is now out and can be read in full at:

http://www.jamesrobertson.com/newsletter.htm

Here is a summary of the contents:

1. Almost all the post-mortem and commentary about Northern

Rock, sub-prime mortgages, credit crunch and possible

worldwide financial crisis fails to address one of the root

causes. I suggest a possible solution.

2.  Margaret Legum's death is a great sadness and shock. She

chaired the South African New Economics Foundation (SANE) with

real energy and impact, and will be greatly missed.

3. My book, a Junior History of Money for French teenagers,

has come out. It's been well-produced by Autrement, the French

publishers. The conclusion is that the history of money is not

yet finished, and that that faces young people with an

important challenge for the world of tomorrow.

4. In 'The Big Earth Book: Ideas and Solutions for a Planet in

Crisis' James Bruges presents a wealth of information in

simple language. It's easy to read and beautifully

illustrated, and infused with passion and anger at what we

humans are doing to one another and the world.

Among my comments is that we must look at the potential

opportunities the present crisis gives us to move to a new,

more advanced stage of human history, as well as at the

threats which we have to meet. One of the merits of this

informative and very well-produced book is that it provokes

serious thinking. It would make an excellent Christmas

present.

5. Shorter notes about other new books are about a family in

the shadow of cancer, people-centred global governance, the

real threats to our world behind "the war against terror", the

case for promoting "Idleness", and links between communities

in richer and poorer countries in a converging world facing

global change.

6. A stop-press announcement is on a potentially crucial step

towards controlling international business corruption.
