Hi Angela, I think Dan reappeared in either June or July in 2004!

I remember the previous year on holiday in Majorca, in Summer 2003,
when Dan was back at the BBC for three months and doing forecasts
mainly on BBC World - I was shocked to turn on the TV in my hotel room
and see him doing the forecast! He hadn't been on the BBC since 2000,
and then mainly on News 24, so it was amazing to see him back! Of
course then he disappointingly disappeared again, and like you in 2004
I returned from holiday to find him back on British screens, and for
good this time!
