My mother told me to always wipe spills immediately. I'd say to always have a
towel on the floor (an old black one) and wipe up any wetness immediately.

It depends on what kind of dirt you have on your floor. I'd mist the floor with
orange cleaner from the dollar store and then wipe the floor with a towel using
your foot. This will pick up 90% of the dirt. Don’t worry about the rest. It
is good for spilled food and dog tracks.

You say the dirt dissolves into the floor. Are we talking about gasoline and oil
tracked in from the garage and driveway? Automotive grease can be removed from
the hands or other surfaces with margarine. If it is dissolved into the floor,
you are out of luck.

A dog carried a bottle of sulfuric acid drain cleaner up from the basement and
spilled it on my vinyl kitchen floor. It made a large black stain. This is
permanent.
