Hmmm ... now that I've selected a part of my icon and moved it a little, the
Select > None menu item is greyed out, and not available.

So, I still don't know how to remove the selection when finished with it.

Why do simple things in GIMP need to be so obscure?

John, When you click in your image somewhere outside the selection then your original selection should disappear (hide). At least that is how I just tested it...

Thanks, Martijn, Yes, it's working that way now. Good. When I tried that last week, it didn't do that, but I must have not done what I thought I did. Best...
