Try importing your document into Open Office and use that to place and size your hires image. Once you get it set there, Open Office will allow you to resize the document and export as a PDF.
May I ask why you are specifying 6"x9"? That is a non-standard format and will not fit well on store shelves or among other books in a bookcase. Here are the standard formats:
"A Format" paperbacks are 110 mm x 178mm (4.33" x 7.01")in size "B
Format" paperbacks are 130 mm x 198mm (5.12" x 7.8"), while "C Format"
(trade paperbacks) are 135 mm x 216mm (5.32" x 8.51")

Help please! doing a self published photo book, 6" x 9", did my GIMP images at that size, commercial printer needs 8.5" x 11" due to bleeds of some images. Cannot get the images to print at right size, they come out at about 4+" x 6+". I did some tests by creating a new image at 8.5 x 11, then pasted in an image that was 6x9, same scaled down size! have tried different combos of parameters, incl. set image, layer, print size, page size at 8.5 x 11. My offsite printer needs images in pdf so am using a converter, it has you open your GIMP image then "print" it (thru GIMP) to the converter, it is creating the pdf with images scaled down, so dont think its my printer, maybe something in the GIMP print function? thanks, Owen

I'm not sure if this helps, but check if your images are RGB (as
opposed to indexed or grayscale). That often helps. Have you tried
setting your default resolution to 300 dpi and then restarting GIMP and
creating the size you want?

I'm making small images for a website, and they are pretty small in terms of
dimensions (text buttons). The automatic ppi in gimp is 72, which makes the
text very badly pixelated that small.
If I create a new image, with the size of .5 inches by .3 inches, with a ppi of
300, the quality of the image is great, but the image is actually bigger than it
should be, when viewed at 100%, and when uploaded to the site.
If I create a new image, with a size of .5 in by .3 inches, with a 72 ppi, it is
smaller in dimension when viewed at 100% and uploaded, but he text is pixelated,
fuzzy.
I've tried creating big images and shrinking them, but the results are never
right.
If pixels are defined by the resolution, and don't have definite size, why are
my images changin dimension when I want to have more pixels within the same
areea.

I would like to learn how to do "gel letters". I dont think thats the offical name for it but it looks like gel letters. and the color starts and fades in to each individual letter. If you need a preview of what im talking about please let me know.

Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) is an experimental Alpha version and is
buggy. The latest stable version is 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope).
Unfortunately, I don't believe there is any way to downgrade short of a
clean install.
That being said, try opening a terminal window and type gimp (no
quotes). Please reply with any error messages you receive and I'll try
to help you figure out the problem. If you don't get any error
message, type gimp; echo "Exit status is $?"

Thanks for the help people gave me figuring out this problem. Apparently it did
not like Gimp and Gimp Shop together. I went into terminal and typed 'Gimp' and
Gimp Shop came up! So I removed both programs then reinstalled Gimp. Now it
comes up :)

I've tried to send this reply multiple times, but it wouldn't go through when I replied via email:
What version of Ubuntu are you using? I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty)
and the version of Gimp I have is 2.6.6. That is also the version
listed in Synaptic Package Manager. I know Ubuntu sets certain
versions of programs as the default version for each version of
Ubuntu. For instance, Firefox will never automatically upgrade 3.5 in
9.04, because 3.0 is the default version of Firefox for 9.04. If
you're using an earlier version of Ubuntu (Hardy, Intrepid, etc...) you
may want to consider upgrading. http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-upgrade-ubuntu-810-intrepid-to-ubuntu-904-jaunty.html

Well, that's why there are package managers :)
My results for Debian, once I had the testing package lists downloaded, was that
it broke 4 packages ( libc6-dev libc6-i386 librsvg2-common locales) as well as
updating 29 existing ones and installing 23 new ones.
Upgrading GIMP outside the standard cycle is not easy and compiling it isn't the
easiest route but if you want to help out in the GIMP application itself you
have to be able to manage all the things you are doing.
The other usefulness of package managers is they manage the updates for you.
You'll now have to do as you are doing every time there is an update.
Good Luck

Hi Michael
I dont know Ubuntu well, I use Debian.
2.6 is definitely out there (esp on Windows platform) but you need to check if
it is in the official Ubuntu repositories - the place(s) where you download your
updates and new installs from.
I think Ubuntu has aptitude and you can use that on the command line.
I use it that way to update my machines, install new packages, find out info
about a package. In fact every operation surrounding the maintenance and use of
packages.
To find out what gimp are available on the repositories you access, open a
console and type in
aptitude search gimp
I get a list of about 40 packages returned some of which are installed - they
have an 'i' at the front, some are straight packages that aren't installed they
have a 'p' in front and some have a 'v' in front for virtual package.
All these packages are available on the Debian repositories I access.
I have specified these via my config file in /etc/apt/sources.list
To find out what info I have on the gimp I then type in
aptitude show gimp
and get a lot of info on the gimp package including the version number.
I have no idea if the Ubuntu GIMP package will be more up to date than the
Debian stable one which is currently sitting at 2.4.7
There doesn't seem to be anything more up to date in testing at the moment.

L.

Tia,
This 4 MB is this the file size or is this the size that GIMP indicates in its status bar ?
If 4 MB is your actual file size then I guess you should try changing the color palette of the image (by using the menu Image > Mode > Indexed). GIMP works in RGB mode by default, because most operations work in this mode.
When you want to save your image in JPG format then you can just leave it in this RGB mode. However, when you want to save your image in the old GIF format then you should convert your image to a color pallete of 256 colors maximum.
When you want to use the newer PNG format then you have the choice between saving in RGB or saving as indexed. When you save as PNG with RGB pallette then the resulting file size will be bigger. When you convert to indexed first then you will have a far smaller resulting file size. However, when converting a picture to indexed your image might change. So you should always watch what the result of converting from RGB to indexed are.
You can always undo the convertion from RGB to indexed. It is also possible that before you convert the image from RGB to indexed you first duplicate the RGB image (by using the menu or CTRL+D). In that way you can have the "before" and the "after" image and you can decide whether it has "harmed" your image.
When your image does not have many colors (for example a logo or a drawing) then you can better convert from RGB to indexed. When you however work with pictures then it is better to leave them in RGB (and save them in JPG format).
On the other side you should also be aware of the JPG-compression which can create artefacts when your image does not have very much colors. Otherwise your nice clean red (or whatever color) part of the picture will have all kinds of reds after saving in JPG format.
I'm having a problem running GIMP under Mac's OS X. My current attempt is with V 2.6.7, although I've observed the same issues with early versions. When I Launch GIMP, The splash screen shows, and there appear to be some large letters scroll across the splash, but not on the background. Then, I get a full sized empty canvas with no ability to resize it other than minimize it. Below that full sized canvas, the tool window appears on the LH side of the screen and some other window appears on the right. If I Click on, any of the buttons that would write to the tool bar that is often at the top of the screen, I get what appears to be a completely empty toolbar that's about two rows high.
I've had the problem with OS X Leopard as well as OS X Snow Leopard running in either 32 or 64 bit kernel. My computer is an early 2008 Macbook Pro with 4 gigs Ram.
I found an "experimental" release that uses the Cocoa interface rather than X11 which runs properly. I'm using Version 2.3.4 which ships with Snow Leopard. Prior to that, I was using the 2.4 which was downloaded from the internet.
I've tried creating a new user and running GIMP as that user; I get the same results as when I run as myself.
Any ideas where to start troubleshooting? As it works the same with Leopard and SL-32 and SL-64, I don't think that Snow Leopard is part of the problem.
Tia,
This 4 MB is this the file size or is this the size that GIMP indicates in its
status bar ?
If 4 MB is your actual file size then I guess you should try changing the color
palette of the image (by using the menu Image > Mode > Indexed). GIMP works in
RGB mode by default, because most operations work in this mode.
When you want to save your image in JPG format then you can just leave it in
this RGB mode. However, when you want to save your image in the old GIF format
then you should convert your image to a color pallete of 256 colors maximum.
When you want to use the newer PNG format then you have the choice between
saving in RGB or saving as indexed. When you save as PNG with RGB pallette then
the resulting file size will be bigger. When you convert to indexed first then
you will have a far smaller resulting file size. However, when converting a
picture to indexed your image might change. So you should always watch what the
result of converting from RGB to indexed are.
You can always undo the convertion from RGB to indexed. It is also possible that
before you convert the image from RGB to indexed you first duplicate the RGB
image (by using the menu or CTRL+D). In that way you can have the "before" and
the "after" image and you can decide whether it has "harmed" your image.
When your image does not have many colors (for example a logo or a drawing) then
you can better convert from RGB to indexed. When you however work with pictures
then it is better to leave them in RGB (and save them in JPG format).
On the other side you should also be aware of the JPG-compression which can
create artefacts when your image does not have very much colors. Otherwise your
nice clean red (or whatever color) part of the picture will have all kinds of
reds after saving in JPG format.

Nola,
A simple Google search (gimp glitter) reveals these sites:
Instruction video's at YouTube:

Glitter brushes (have a look at the usage rights):

Or there are websites that can do it for you:
But it is always nice when you can do it yourself using your favorite graphics
software.

Thanks to all those who helped me with the text path stuff yesterday. Now that I have that down, I was wondering if someone can teach me how to download and use glitter in gimp. Like how to make a graphic have glitter, doesnt have to be animated. I hope someone can help because I've always wanted to know how to do it and couldnt find anybody to teach me. Thank you in advance.
Try using Inkscape since it is a vector graphic editor whereas GIMP is for bit-mapped images. I use both programs and they are each great in their own way.

Inkscape is also a free, Open Source and cross-platform (Windows, Mac & Linux) application with plenty of video tutorials.

I am not sure why this is happening, but you could
try checking a few things - first, check that the "chain" is not
showing next to the eye on the layers panel - that could be "binding"
the layers together. Also, I noticed in the latest version of GIMP that
you have to choose which image you are working on in the drop down box
at the top of the layers window - pretty frustrating to have to do that
all the time, but maybe try that and then choose your layer and see if
that helps.
Let us know if any of these work for you.

I just can't find out is a change with the layers. I usually work with
a few layers at a time, but now anything I try to do to with the tools
on the top layer, I do to all of the layers. Like, if I erase, it
erases through all of the layers so that all I have is white. And if I

it, it selects and moves all the layers! It is very frustrating, and
even though I really enjoy gimp, I am not very savvy of it, so I can't
work it out.... So that is my question: how to fix my layers or tools
so that anything I do is only done to the layer I have selected. I hope
all of this makes sense and thankyou all in advance for your help!
Stacy,
Could you please post your message in a smaller font ?
Or even better: just use text format when you send a message to Yahoo groups.
That would very much be appreciated.
About your question:
do you perhaps mean this free Photoshop plugin: www.geocities.com/why2kspace/ ?
This tells you how one could replace Photoshop with GIMP:
http://laptoplogic.com/resources/configuring-gimp-2.6-to-replace-adobe-photoshop
It's about GIMP 2.6 and also points to the article that I mention here below.
This tells you how to enable Photoshop plugins within GIMP:

Hello. i was wondering if you can still use eye candy with gimp? i have read on the older boards that you can use eye candy with older gimp versions but not sure on how to install it with the newer versions of gimp. i currently use gimp 2.6 and have windows xp so if anyone can help me that would be great!
I know your frustration because I've done that too. The selection tools
penetrate all layers. I use two ways of dealing with the problem. First, select
Layers from the top menu and drop down to Stack. This allows you to change the
active layer where you want the changes to take place without flubbing up all of
the other layers. The second method I sometimes use is Dialogues and then
dropping to Layers, this allows you to switch on or off your layers, among other
things. I think on the new versions it's under something like dockable settings
or something like that. I'm using a gimp 2.47 because the newer ones aren't
working good with my computer even though I like them better - maybe. Perhaps
someone with the newer versions can help you more. Hope this helps some.
