Hi!
My name is Esther, I'm a wife, mother to 4 and grandmother to 10.
I've had a digital camera for about 8 or 10 years now (first one had 1
megapixel, imagine that!) but only started to "do something" with my
pictures in the last 2 or 3 years. Mostly scrapbooking.
I've become fairly familiar with Photoshop Elements, but I'm just not
willing to pay for an update every year.
My brother suggested I try the Gimp, so just last night I downloaded and
installed it. I'll have to get used to the interface, it is quite
different from PSE, yet much also seems quite similar.
I'm hoping to learn here, ask my questions, and in due time also be able
to help others.

Greetings from Beautiful British Columbia
Esther

Hi Esther,

Welcome to the group. :-)

I have been using GIMP for so long that I don't remember how to use Photoshop anymore!

Best,
Riva

Hi,
I'm new to GIMP. Does anyone know how to use it in place of Paint Shop Pro? I
have a macintosh and PSP doesn't work on it but GIMP does and I'm just wondering
if you knew how to use it in place of PSP. Also is there something that I need
to download so that it can read PSP files. I'm using it to make my own
stationary. Thank you so much for your time.

Hi Tonya,

Welcome to the group. I cannot answer your question, but maybe if you post more specific questions, someone can help.

Hi Tonya,

  >> I'm new to GIMP.

Welcome! And you're by no means alone ;-))
I just started using the Gimp a week or two ago.

  >> Does anyone know how to use it in place of Paint Shop Pro?

I have never worked with PSP, I "cut my teeth" on Photoshop and lately
have been using Photoshop Elements.
What I would like to suggest, rather than trying to figure out how to
replace PSP, is to forget about PSP for now, and start with the Gimp as
a completely new toy. Learn to use the basics, and then build on that.
As to getting information to learn, do a Google search and you'll be
amazed at the information available.
Also, open up the Help file and skim through it. You'll likely find
items that you want to know more about and learn.

As to reading PSP files, my suggestion would be to save them as .png
files from PSP, so you can open them in the Gimp.

"How to use the Gimp in place of Paint Shop Pro" is a huge question,
much more than can be dealt with in a single message, so again a
suggestion: Start using the program, then come back to the list with
specific question, like 'how do I make round corners on a square shape'
or 'how do I make a brush larger or smaller' or... well, you get the idea.

Above all: Have fun learning!

Esther

Hi.

Gimp can load Paint Shop Pro files, but cannot save to them.
If you continue using gimp, I suggest saving to gimp's own .xcf format files.

Hello, I'm Maria. I just installed GIMP and have been experimenting with it. I
am playing with the banner template. So far, it looks like fun!

Maria,

Welcome to the GIMP group. Good to see that you are already experimenting with
GIMP. That is the best way to learn its possibilities. When you do not know how
to do things you can always look it up online.

When you have created a nice banner you can upload it into this group. You can
go to the GIMP2-website, click on Photos, create your own photo album and upload
one or more pictures.

Greetings,

Martijn

Hello Everybody!!!!

I am a beginner with gimp, but have a little photoshop experience.  Right now I have what I am guessing is a simple problem, but I am stumped.

I used the "text circle" (create>Logo>text circle) and I would like to move individual letters closer together and basically just tweek the font and make it more appealing.

I don't Know how!!!!  I feel I have tried everything, but to no avail.

Any ideas????

I have my photo, it's a head shot. I used the dropper to pick the color from the
background. Than I clicked on Fuzzy Select tool. The head is surrounded by the
dashed lines, but I don't know what to click next! How do I remove the
background?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome.

I haven't used the text circle, but what about cutting out each letter and putting them on different layers? You can duplicate the layer and then delete all but on letter on each layer...

Try pressing Ctrl+x and see if that takes out the background (once it is selected).

Josh,

I have been looking at how the Text Circle works.
However, I do not see an easy option to tell the spacing between the characters.
It looks like the script calculates how big the circle should be and then places
the characters along the circle. The script calculates the spacing.

You could make the Radius of the circle smaller so the characters get less room
and are closer to one another. You could also change the Start Angle (where the
text should start on the circle) and the Fill Angle (how much of the circle
should be filled).

Martijn

That's exactly the tutorial I thought Cassandra might need Martijn.
I can't find the original at the moment but I'm sensitive to plagiarism so I
feel annoyed about that link and Rea Maor for not crediting the original source
or at least stating his is a derivative work. He may have reworked the tutorial
in line with newer versions of GIMP but he could still have said where the work
originated. (grumpy growls and a link to http://www.plagiarism.org/ ;) )

AFAIK the tutorial works; good luck to Cassandra

or at least stating his is a derivative work. He may have reworked the tutorial
in line with newer versions of GIMP but he could still have said where the work
originated. (grumpy growls and a link to http://www.plagiarism.org/ ;) )

You know what happens -- just after you post --

the original plastic text tutorial :
  http://gug.criticalhit.dk/tutorials/tomcat1/
doesn't have a date on it but predates 2007 by a few years :)

Yes a shiny surface like making skin look wet, oily, or a plastic look like doll
skin.

I did find a very good tutorial on youtube I believe do make water drops.
That is the look I want but all over the surface.

Thanks everyone.

Hello.

I often have to put several pictures side by side to make one picture. Doing it
with the mouse is not very precise. Is there a way to do this quickly and
precisely, at least by moving a selection or a layer with the keyboard (for
instance: "46 px down")?

This is how i do it, i've been using gimp for 2 years now so i've learned my way around gimp by teaching myself even if its not the correct or right or easiest way to do it.
I open a new screen that would be big enough for you to work with, open both pictures in the same window by going to file > open as layers, use the scale tool to down size them and put the together. :) hope this works.

Thank you,

Nola Folse

Is this any use to you?

http://stitchpanorama.sourceforge.net/

"Stich Panorama is a plug-in for the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) which
takes digital images and overlays one atop the other to make a panorama. With
multiple applications of Stitch Panorama, any number of images can be combined
into a large panorama. Features include image blending, color balance, and
distortion matching. "

Alternatively, http://www.shallowsky.com/software/pandora/

"Pandora is a GIMP script which helps in stitching together multiple images to
make a panorama.

It does not find image matches automatically, but it does automate the most
tedious part of making a panorama: creating a large image in which your
component images are loaded as separate layers, with initial spacings and layer
masks."
