I'm a new Gimp user, but used PS for years. One thing that I never
really got into is the use of Layer Masks. I know they are powerful
and can allow you to do alot of things.

Any good tutorials on how to use layer masks to their full potential
would be appreciated.

Here is what inspired me to use them,
http://www.home.unix-ag.org/simon/gimp/globes.html

This is a pretty cool tutorial, but I loose him early on. He doesn't
really explain the 'convert to RGB alpha' or its settings. He also
doesn't explain applying a layer mask, and its settings.

I am trying to get rid of the ocean portion, but aside from
painstakingly erasing all the ocean part, I don't know how to use
layer masks to do this.

-sorry this post is so long.

Go to:

http://gimp.org/tutorials/

and look at the stuff there, especially the tutorial on contrast
masking. Layer masks are used for so many things that it is a fairly
long learning curve to know when and how to use them. Once you've
learned a bit, you'll find yourself using them all the time, so the time
and effort is worthwhile.

I know a woman who took a Photoshop class, and she almost went off the
deep end when they hit layers, and she's not a dummy; so, be prepared to
spend time and energy to learn them.

If I can help, just let me know.

Good luck,

Jim

So is pasting a image from the clipboard the only way to get a jpg or
any image on to a layer? I was looking for a "insert image" command
or something of that nature.

You can always try Open as Layer under the file menu (in the picture). I
use that a lot.

or if you see it in windows explorer you can just drag it on top of the picture.
i think it will open as a new layer of that image.
actually quite niclely named as the filename.
it works in linux from konqueror and i think it works from windows explorer.

i almost always use the clone tool.
clone the type of skin i want over that spot.
if i need to i might blur the edges.
and almost always use a fuzzy tool. don't use a sharp edged circle.

same as when you paste something... before you copy choose "feather"
under the select menu and feather by 4 or 5.

At page 82 of the manual, it reads "Click the layer of the first image
in the layers dialog and while holding the left mouse button down,
drag it on the image window of the second image and release the mouse
button."

I have done as directed, including all sorts of variations and have
been unable to insert one layer from another layer. I have two images
on screen, I do as instructed above and cannot make it work!

What am I doing wrong?

Please help an 83 yr old trying to avoid memory loss by learning to
use Gimp 2!

what operating system do you use?
               Mac OS, MS Windows, Linux?
What version of GIMP do you have?
probably under help menu choose "About"
if you have two images open...
resize windows so you can see both images.
     Click on the first image.
Choose "Dialogs" menu and select "Layers" or press CTRL-L on the keyboard.
click on the layer and drag it to the second image... the image you wish to
copy the layer to.
the layer should be copied to the second image and placed in the middle of
the image.

or try this...
     Open your First Image.
From the menu choose File / Open.
     Find your second image.
Click on it and drag it out on top of your first image.
now you can cancel from the "Open" dialog.

and finally
From windows, mac, or a mac file viewer you can drag the icon onto the
opened gimp image.

for some hints on how to do things go to youtube and search on gimp.

Hello..I saw this group on GIMP on the internet.
I am from South Africa, happily married 28 yr old mom to two kids.
I have been using GIMP for about two years, firstly just as a photo
editor : resizing etc, but then I started to do digital scrap booking
in it as I learnt it was a mimic of PSP and I am basically self-taught
in it. I now design digital scrap booking kits in GIMP which I sell
online. But It is still a learning process...at the moment I am
hunting for a sticker tutorial. My sister, who uses PSE and photoshop
said to make a sticker you open it in a transparent bg, then select
all, float, defloat, selection expand or something like this...GIMP (I
have version 2.2.15)does not have defloat, only float. I see it does
have "grow"...my quesion is: Does anybody know how to make a sticker??
Thanks a lot..Bronwen.

Anyone able to help? I am teaching myself how to use Gimp so I can go
on to teach pupils in my school. I have had very little training as
most of the computer graphics I have worked on have been vector
graphics using CorelDraw. I am hoping the kids will download the Gimp
at home to use on a regular basis as well as produce work for their
GCSE's. At the moment I have produced some tutorials to produce web
buttons. For their exam they need to be interactive or animated, has
anyone any suggestions they would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Geoff,

You could look into the GAP (GIMP Animation Package) - I am not very
familiar with it but I know it exists and may be able to help you find
the answers you need.

Good luck.

I am trying to learn Gimp in order to teach it to my pupils. I have
created a number of tutorials one of which I tried to upload.
Unfortunately the file size has prohibited this. If anyone is
interested in looking at these and hopefully returning constructive
criticism I would be grateful. Some are very basic and most are
examples found on the net which I have adapted. The files come in the
form of flash files that riun in explorer. The total size is almost
100Mb which means they will need to be sent on a disc. If anyone is
interested please contact me. As I don't know many millionaires I will
be restricting the number of discs I send out unless anyone can tell me
how to post them on the net. As well as my yahoo email I also have a
hotmail account with messenger installed. sgauk@...
Look forward to any replies.

(I have 2.2 myself.)

Geoff,

YouSendIt has a maximum file size of 100 MB: www.yousendit.com
So if you can get your content in under 100 MB you can send it to gimp
(at) startpagina.nl
You could perhaps also divide the content into smaller parts and send
them individually. I guess that's better than burning it to a CD and
sending it by snail mail.

Thanks in advance,

I have just downloaded GIMP and have several problems. Perhaps I'm
being a bit impatient (though I did work my way through the basic
tutorials) but would really appreciate some help.

First, I can't figure out how to make the help system work. I
downloaded the files but there is no installer that I can find.

Second (more important, perhaps) what I'm really trying to do is to
change the perspective of a photograph. I have a 3/4 view of a
building facade that I want to change to a flat rectangle. I have
tried using the perspective tool, moving the dot in the middle as well
as the corners in various tries, and the "gas meter" at the bottom of
the image indicates that some sort of computation is taking place, but
the resulting image is identical to the original. Can someone tell me
what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks

Hi Rick,

I cannot help with the help system, but as far as perspective goes, did
you click the Transform button on the window that comes up? I have no
problems with that. Make sure you are on the right layer also (if the
layer you are trying to change perspective on is the background layer,
it is a good idea to copy that layer, make the original layer invisible
and try the perspective on the copy layer.)

I have just started a video podcast about the Gimp. The perspective tool
is not covered up to now, but I'll do that too in the near future.

The URL is http://meetthegimp.org

Hope it can help you.

Quick tip for the perspective tool:

set the options to "backward" and preview "grid only".

Click into the image and grab the grid. Deform it so that it runs
parallel with the lines you want to have corrected. Click on OK to run.
