Subject: Problem with print.exe on 2.4.4

I have recently installed and am now getting familiar with Gimp 2.4.4.
So far, excellent, very competitive with Photoshop. However, one
problem. When I attempt to print, the printer window comes up but when
I click "print" I get the message:

GIMP Message
Plug-in crashed: "print.exe"
(C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plur-ins\print.exe)

It then advises me to close. Any advice.

Hi all,

I received a .pdf file from someone with a logo in it for their new
website. I got it into GIMP, and removed the white background. The
problem is that the logo, which is in the shape of an oval, has jagged
edges along parts of it. How do I get rid of those? I tried having two
layers of the image, gaussian blurring the bottom one and then shrinking
the top one by 1 pixel, but it still looks jagged. Any ideas would be
much appreciated.

Thanks,
Riva

I am not an expert at all, but if the logo is a
circle, you could make a circle that is slightly
larger, fill it with the same color as the logo, and
put it on the layer below the logo.

Thanks for the reply Eric. The logo is an oval shape with a burgundy
"swish" on one side and a brownish "swish" on the other side. I want to
put the logo on either a tan or a burgundy background.

You can also select the feather edges option if you are using the
circle select tool. Set it to around 2-5 before you select the oval,
then when you cut the circle/oval it will give you nice clean edges.

The feather edges selection is also available if you are using the
select by color tool. Just set the radius to around 2-5 after you
click the feather edges checkbox.

I downloaded and installed the latest gimp_scripts_2.4_tested.tar.bz2
and I get an error and a very hard (for me) to understand fix for the
problem:

# begin error

Plug-in "script-fu"
(/opt/gnome/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/script-fu)
attempted to register the menu item "<Image>/Filters/Decor" for
procedure "script-fu-addborder".
The menu label given in gimp_install_procedure() already contained a
path. To make this work, pass just the menu's label to
gimp_install_procedure().

# end error

I don't understand the 'fix' part of it. What is the menu label? What
is gimp_install_procedure()?

TIA,

Wade,

Sorry for the late reply. Anyway, I'll try to explain something about
PNG images and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

This browser has problems with transparency in PNG images with a full
color palette (RGB). If you would remove the alpha channel from the
PNG images then IE should display the image as normal. However, then
you also removed the transparency from the image and some images just
need this.

If the transparent image should display on a background with only one
color then you can also paint this color on the background of the PNG
images. However, then you still lost the transparency in the image.

With "PNG-8" a PNG image with a maximum of 256 colors (= 8 bits) is
meant. You get this by reducing the amount of colors in an image. To
do so you open an image and go to the menu Image > Mode > Indexed...
From there you can choose to generate an optimum color palette with a
maximum of 256 colors.

Doing so will also create a smaller final image size (which is nice).
When I use images on the web in general I try to reduce the numbers of
colors used in the image using this function. For most images the
result is fine.

However, you should check the result of reducing the number of colors
in your image. You can make a duplicate of your image using the menu
Image > Duplicate (CTRL+D). Then you can compare your image before and
after reducing the number of colors.

Instead of fixing your images you could of course also fix this
IE-browser (or at least make it behave like a more standards compliant
browser):

- http://code.google.com/p/ie7-js/

Hi everyone,

I've just recently started playing around with GIMP. I wanted an on-
line resource to talk with others, since the tutorials I've looked
up haven't worked. I don't know how to go about fixing what's not
working either.

I want to learn Gimp for basic Photo Manipulation, and banner,
signature making. But not for gaming, and all the tutorials I find
have alot to do with that.

Only been working with GIMP for about two weeks now. Just really
wanting to learn.

I've found good tutorials but most of them seem to be missing steps
in them becuz people familar with GIMP run on automatic when writing
them. So, most of the time it seems like steps are missing, and I
haven't been able to put it together on how to move on from certain
points in the tutorials I've been trying. I hope that all made
sense. Glad to be here.

Just tell us what you would like to achieve and whether you already

You could zoom in and use the lasso selection to cut the background
from around her without using paths. Be sure to click feather edges
and set it to around 3 or 4. That way you will get a nice clean edge
around your cut-out.

Make sure the layer has an alpha channel added or else it won't cut it
out to a transparency. You add an alpha channel by going to
layer--->transparency--->add alpha channel. You can use the delete key
to get rid of the unwanted background. I usually cut it out piece by
piece so I don't loose my selection. You can also right click and cut
the unwanted background out also.

I'm not sure I've ever heard of gimp being able to add sound to an
image. I thought it was more an imaging program. I know you can make
animated gif images with gimp by specifying a specific frame-rate
change on each layer. If you are using xp, look in your program files
for a program called windows movie maker, its a free program that
ships with the xp operating system and it allows you to add sound and
transition effects for images or groups of images. Movie maker is
probably more along the lines of what you have in mind. Its really not
that hard to figure out, and can produce some cool animation sequences
complete with sound.

Brian's right about Window Movie Maker.

It would be your best bet for doing what you want to do. I've taken
photo's with my point'n'shoot camera, and little video's and put
them together in a "movie" type format with W.M.M.

Got an answer in the GUG forum. Apparently v2.4 manual was not
updated with respect to this function. Most of the info from the

Sandy,
You have to download the help files from the same site you got the
program. Here is the link:
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html
Look in the "Additional Packages" window and download the appropriate
file (the last one is an English language only version if that works
for you). You then run the program and it installs all the help
files. You can then access help from within the program.

For image size adjustments go to Image/Scale Image/ and make your
adjustments. You can do it by pixels, inches, etc. Just do one
dimension and the program will maintain aspect ration and do the
other. If you want to change aspect ratio, do that with crop tool
first (you can do it free hand or enter an aspect ratio to constrain
it) then resize. Depending on how you intend to use the resized image
(screen only, print, etc.) you may also want to adjust the resolution
setting in the scale image window when you resize it.

  Hope this helps,
Steve

Is there a print preview? I just printed out my picture that I resized to 2
inches and it printed out full screen but only the top corner so it would be
16 inches across if I print the rest.

I want this to print at 2 inches.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Sandy,
Well, what we apparently have here is a case of the blind leading
the blind :-) Can an experienced user help us out?

I'm relatively new to Gimp and use it for more complex editing only
(e.g., layers). My primary program is ACDSee Pro and that is the
program from which I print.
So I pulled up a picture in Gimp and tried to print it. I have the
same problem you do: though I want a 4" x 6" printout, an entire 8" x
10" sheet of paper is filled with what appears to be just the upper
left corner of the photo.
I noticed there is another image function, print size, just below
the scale image option. You can also set the print size from the
'image settings' tab in the print file pop up window. However,
setting print size from the location in the image drop down menu does
not change the settings in the 'image settings' tab of the print
dialog window.
   I tried (attempting a 4" x 6" printout)
-scaling the image only
-setting print size only
-scaling image and setting print size

In all cases, I still get a tiny piece of the picture printing out
to fill an 8.5" x 11" piece of paper.

Sandy and I would appreciate any help others can give on this.
Thanks,
Steve
