Hi!
today I received my Lubitel U!!!
It looks quite intuitive to use, though I haven't
really tried (I know I will regret this statement).

QUESTION TIME:

1) is it normal not to see the focus in the finder? It
always shows infinitive on focus... do I have to
calculate the space with the numbers on the small
lense, or there is something wrong in my camera?

2) When I load the film does it lock when it is in
place, or I have to stop looking the back window? So,
2b) is it possible this way to take multiple exposure?

Thanks!!!

J.

I didn't think focusing was making any difference in the viewfinder
either when I first got my Lubi but it does. You have to peer pretty
closely at the central circle but you can focus with it. There is of
course also the flip-up magnifier which might help.

Alternatively, focus into the middle distance, use f22 and hopefully
everything will be sharp...!

No, you wind until the next number appears in the ruby window.

Yes!

The Lubitel finder is not a true reflex finder in the sense that the finders in
the Rolleiflex, Yashica, or even Hasselblad or Kiev are. It is really a
"brilliant" finder with a small focusing spot
on the centre. This ground spot allows some sort of focusing, though it can be
hard.

>2) When I load the film does it lock when it is in

The winding system uses the same winding/frame positioning system introduced in
the early Kodak box cameras more than 100 years ago. The only way the frame can
be positioned properly is to wind it as far as where the printed numbers on the
backing paper (as seen through the window) would tell. Since no double exposure
prevention mechanism is present, it is possible to make double or more exposures
on the frame. It goes without saying that its possible to make blank frames as
well- by winding the film without exposing. Its also possible to make
overlapping frames if the winding is carried to far or too short.

Just shot two rolls through a used 166B today. Will be getting

Just got the rolls back from the lab and they look pretty darn good!
Was lucky enough to be shooting in good daylight and use f/16 or f/22
so focusing was not much of a problem. Exposures with both HP5 and
Velvia seem pretty close as I was using the 'Sunny 16' rule. Not as
sharp as the Yashica 124G I was borrowing but for $20 I can't
complain. I will post the images after I scan them in.

You might need to adjust the focus or check for
fogging in the lens. My Lubitels compare with my 124G
pretty well, particularly when the Lubitel is placed
on a tripod. I think it's pretty easy to mishandle a
Lubitel and cause blurring just because of the
placement of the shutter release, and the rotational
force you place on the camera to release it.

Try your Lubitel on a tripod, or use the shutter cable
when shooting handheld. You might find better
sharpness as a result.

Also, to be sure, how are you scanning those in? Are you scanning
from prints or negatives? If scanning from prints, remember to
sharpen the images after they're scanned, as even the highest quality
professional scanners most often produce a result noticeably softer
than the original.

Hello Anthony,

You have a good number of excellent pictures there, I especially like
markoman and little brother, but all of them have something special to
me, thanks for sharing!

Hi all,

First, I always was too reluctant to write the following, but now it
seems to be the time.

Does anyone here know, what happened to Tommy Poulsen of Denmark who
is the only official moderator in this group? In the member list you
can see that his mail account is not disclosed and already appears
under the bouncing accounts. A couple of weeks ago I sent him an email
to his website which is shown under the public profile, asking if he
still acts as a moderator. Actually I was seeking for one person who
could report the for months defective photo section to yahoo. I never
got a reply, and let us all hope that no serious thing happened with
him. Perhaps only loss of interest..

Maybe some of you could also send a mail to him, and when that turns
out with no result, we then should discuss what to do, at least for
having again a proper photo section. Shipping around that with
uploading to the file section is cool with me, but when this one is
full (at 18% only now) we´ll rock the next problem.

Hello! I just received my Lubitel 166U and I am facing a newbie
problem. Despite my reading of an english translated manual I couldn't
get to load a film... Ok, stop laughing :-) If I understand well the
film is to be placed in the bottom receptacle of the camera and then I
have to unwind the film up to the take-up spool (the receptacle under
the viewfinder). But where can I "attach" the film in the take-up
spool ? Do I have to use (and therefore buy) a rollfilm holder or
something else ? I can't figure out how I can place the film so that
it will wind when I turn the knob.
Sounds funny eh ? I am a realy newbie in medium format and 120 film.
Please help !
Best regards.
