Yes, you have a newer version of Nero than I do, mine doesn't have
a "digital quality" option. But it's all digital, so what the heck
does that mean?

Hi Mick, not sure which version you have, but there's another optopn -
nero digital quality - I might try that as well and test it on a few
players.

I always try for 320kb (cd quality), but sometimes have to settle for
192kb.

What do the other members here use to burn music to cd's?

Nero gives you 3 choices of audio discs: (1) Standard CD audio (2) MP3
Audio disc, and (3) Windows Media. You can play the CD audio format on
any CD player (it's the same format as the CDs you buy), but MP3 audio
discs can only be played on a CD player that will play MP3 discs.

Re: audio quality; for MP3's, the very best quality would be 192kb
bitrate or the highest quality setting of variable bitrate audio, but
160kb is usually fine. For standard audio discs, I'd burn the tracks
at
the highest variable bitrate setting. They say that 128kb is "CD
quality" but I haven't found that to be true, it's more like 192kb.

Hey guys.
Another question for you.

We are looking at buying an MP3 player and would like
any recommendations for brand, etc.

We are obviously looking at the ipod but want to explore choices.
What about the Dell DJ? They are on a great sale right now.

I'm concerned with being married to a music service such as
itunes or (sorry) Napster. I know there are only about 3 of us left
who ever post here but I'm anxious to hear your views (Sonoma!).

Thanks so much!

Cleaning the CD will often correct this, if it's not defective, which
can be the case with some of the off brands of CDs.

I hope this isn't just a two way conversation, Sev. Hello, Hello,
is anyone in there?!

Yes, the well known paid services, such as Rhapsody and iTunes are
legal and they pay royalties to the artists. I don't know about
companies like the one you asked about though. Which paid services
are good? That really depends on what genre of music you're looking
for. Some have bigger catalogues in certain genres than others. So
the best thing to do is go to a company's website to see exactly
what music they offer. - Mick

Yeah, well, I did that once, gave a company like this my e-mail
address. The end result was a ton of spam from their "associates".
Open a new e-mail account that you can use for potential "junk mail"
companies like this one, give 'em the address and see what they tell

I'm still using Kazaa Lite but I'm about to abandon it because I can

Hey guys.
I know this is off topic but you all are so much
smarter than I am and I need some help.
While I was in Berlin, I bought a Nena DVD.
After waiting until the right time, I anxiously
slid it into my player (Sony PS2) and sat down for
some great music.
Well, I now know about "DVD regions". I bought a
DVD for region 2-6 and I live in region 1.
I never knew about this 'region phenomenon' until
now and am not a bit happy with it.

Is there anything I can do to get around this
restriction? C'mon y'all, you've always helped me
in the past!

I'd have to think about it but a few that come to mind are Johnny
Cash's 'Folsom Prison Blues', Jerry Jeff Walker's 'Mr. Bojangles'
("met him in a cell in New Orleans I was..."), Bob Dylan's 'I Shall
Be Released', Elvis Presley's 'Jailhouse Rock'. There have GOT to
be prison songs newer than these though!

Sounds like Samuel Johnson would've put Procol Harum's 'Salty Dog'
in this category.

OK ... I'm putting together a special collection of JAIL/PRISON
songs!

Suggestions would be VERY appreciated.

My first inclination is to check JOHNNY CASH's discogrophy. :)
Beyond that ... I'm stumped.

Thx, StoneSoul

Hello all, I am writing a story for a college class about the
evolution of the music industry and was wondering if anyone here used
Napster, then went over to Morpheus or Kazaa, and now owns an ipod and
uses itunes or some other pay service for their music gathering and
why you use that now. And do you think that music downloading hurts
the cd industry, or stimulates it because mp3s allow lesser known bands
to become known.

I've only used WinMX once or twice but I may give it another spin to
see if I can find some files there that I can't find on Kazaa (Lite).
I recall that I didn't like the way WinMX operates though - the
different types of search hits you mentioned. Kazaa is a lot simpler,
you can either find and download a file when you search for it or you
can't, and if you can't, wait a few minutes, search again, and it may
show up.

Well, I suppose he meant 44.1 as in 44,100 = .wav audio file. Winamp
has a free plug-in for DJ's that converts MP3 audio into .wav out. I
don't remember the name of it. I had downloaded it from either
download.com or Winamp.com/plugins, and decided I didn't have a use
for it. It's designed to be used for broadcasting an audio stream
through a server. It doesn't really change the quality of an MP3
though, just decompresses it and turns it back into .wav audio. That
is to say, once an audio file has been compressed below about 96kb,
you can not recover the sound quality you've lost from compression.
For this reason, I don't bother downloading MP3's that have a
bitrate lower than 96kb.

Hi Warren, Many thanks for the info, that price is a little rich for
my blood I'm afraid ;-( Free is a little more in my league ;-)

One thing, I thought the higher the bitrate, the better quality it
would be?

...ok, off topic, but a recent edition of the Tudogs newsletter
pointed me in the direction of a great FREEWARE utility for Excel
that any regular spreadsheet user will appreciate.

It's called "ASAP UTILITIES" and the author, Bastien Mensink
eGate of Internet Solutions in The Netherlands, describes it
as, "ASAP Utilities is a free and easy to use Add-In for MS Excel
97/2000/2002/XP/2003. The utility contains over 300 functions to
make your work easier and faster done."

WinMx. I don't DL or share a lot, so I haven't looked into Kazaa.
Some files DL and UL very easily, but lately these boots that I'm
after have been real difficult.
