Emmanuel Santos
The Passing of Light II: The Book of Illumination
February 12 - March 14, 2009
Opening reception on Thursday, February 12, 6pm

In 2007, Emmanuel Santos exhibited The Passing of Light, the first part of a
series of photographs drawn from the holy scriptures of the Bible, the Torah,
and the Koran. Santos returns to Silverlens with The Passing of Light II: Book
of Illumination. The show will have an opening reception on February 12,
Thursday at 6pm and runs until March 14, 2009.

Santos will be giving an artist talk on February 14, Saturday, from 3-5pm on
how music played an important role in the creation of the exhibition.
"Photography is my song, a monochromatic ballad of expressions between birth and
death, says Santos. "A melodic song that appears like scenes devoid of dress
rehearsal and images that were formed in the shadows of the earth’s surface…
silent and mute, craving to be told. The chorus often lasts with unending
refrain of joy and sorrow, a continuous pattern in human cycle."

Family Spaces
Stella Kalaw
January 8 - February 7, 2009
Opening reception on January 8, Thursday, 6pm

Silverlens Gallery welcomes 2009 with a photography show by United States based
artist Stella Kalaw. Over the last fifty years, the Filipino diaspora has
altered the landscape of families and the relationships that bind. Kalaw, having
left the Philippines over ten years ago, returns to show Family Spaces, a series
of photographs of her immediate family members' homes all over the world.
Continents apart, each home is a glimpse of interconnectedness through objects
of the everyday Filipino. Worn tsinelas on a stair landing, a tabo floating in a
balde, the Sacred Heart of Jesus--all markers of Pinoy identity, they are
umbilical cords to the familiar. The color photographs present cultural identity
through markers that belong to one extended family, but stand in for any
Filipino family anywhere in the world.

Stella Kalaw (b. 1969 in Manila) graduated with a degree in Professional
Photography from the Brooks Institute of Photography in California, under a Fuji
Scholarship and worked as an intern in Irving Penn’s Studio in New York City
shortly after. Kalaw has been part of group shows in Washington, New York,
California and at the Ayala Museum in Manila. Her works have garnered awards
such as a Honorable Mention in the Polaroid International Awards and the Gold
Prize in American Photo Magazine’s New Views Awards.

Family Spaces by Stella Kalaw opens at 6pm on January 8, Thursday and runs until
February 7, 2009. There will be an Artist Talk by Stella Kalaw on January 10,
Saturday, from 3-5pm. Family Spaces will be shown along with Library Bookworksby
Renato Orara at SLab (Silverlens Lab).

Renato Orara
Library Bookworks
an exhibition / hidden installation
Opening reception on January 8
Thursday, 6pm

Beginning 2009, fifteen Philippine libraries will be participating in a
permanent public installation of artworks by New York-based artist Renato Orara.
The installation, consisting of drawings hidden in library books, will be
heralded by Library Bookworks, his one-month solo show at SLab.

For his first gallery exhibition in the Philippines, Orara renders human ears in
library books and produces corresponding photographic prints with the books'
call number labels affixed to them. The library books are shelved in libraries,
while the photo prints are displayed in the gallery. These prints also serve as
maps that disclose the locations of the drawings. To begin the search for the
original artworks, one may come to the gallery to view the photo prints, jot
down the works' call numbers, and obtain a list of participating libraries. Thus
the gallery becomes a library while the libraries become the galleries.

For over a decade, Renato Orara¢s works have garnered international critical
acclaim. His works are simple yet extreme. Orara's ballpoint ink works on paper,
meticulously rendered and densely layered, seem to embody a reality that
transcends that of the object that serves as his subject. Viewing reproductions
of his work is not enough preparation for the astonishing experience of seeing
the original work. His works have been featured in exhibitions in many cities
including New York City, Paris, Brussels, Basel, and Miami, and are in the
collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Museum of Modern Art in
New York.

Library Bookworks by Renato Orara runs from January 8 to February 14, 2009 at
SLab (Silverlens Lab). There will be an opening reception on January 8, Thursday
at 6pm. Renato Orara will have a live online artist talk on January 17, Saturday
at 12pm. Library Bookworks will be shown along with Family Spaces by Stella
Kalaw at Silverlens Gallery.

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 3-5pm

Silverlens Foundation (SLF) grantee Gina Osterloh will be giving an artist talk
this coming Saturday, Nov. 22, from 3-5pm at Silverlens Gallery. Osterloh is a
Filipina-American artist who works with installation, photography and

treats the body and its surrounding environment as symbiotic physical and
psychological spaces. In the series Shooting Blanks, the room itself is treated
as a second skin created with hundreds of paper cutouts. Osterloh graduated with
a Bachelor of Communications/Media Studies from the De Paul University in
Chicago and has a Masters of Fine Art from the University of California Irvine.
A Fulbright grantee, Osterloh is the sole recipient of the 2008 Silverlens

November 11-29, 2008
Opening Reception, Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 4 – 6 pm

Artist Julius Clar exhibits his shadow box Assemblages at SLab's 20SQUARE
gallery. Assembled from objects and photographs collected over the years, Clar
arranges vintage toys and other banal objects in whimsical grids within a frame.
“These ideas or thoughts can never pursue a narrative thread, and I would only
liken it to a verse of a song, or a stanza of a poem. The box is a frame, or the
frame is a box, to flat or three-dimensioned objects which are dependent on
outside references and are put together at calculated randomness in logical or
illogical juxtapositions.”

Julius Clar is known for employing alternative photographic processes such as
the Van Dyke method of printing. He was Chair of the Photography Program at the
De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde. In his career spanning over 30 years,
Clar has shown work at the Ayala Museum, Lopez Museum, Cultural Center of the
Philippines and Art Center, among others.

Twelve artists push the boundaries of traditional photography and its

We have done it again! Opening October 16, Thursday, SLab (Silverlens Lab) is
the second gallery to be designed by Anna Sy of C/S Design Consultancy and Tisha
de Borja, the first being the museum-quality space Silverlens in 2006. The two
spaces mirror each other in design, one previously a piano warehouse and another
a former auditorium. Connecting them is an ambitious 12-meter bridge, uniting
the two independent buildings along Pasong Tamo Extension.

Illustrating the architecture of SLab for the online community, we are launching
our website today. It was created by multi-awarded designers Rex Advincula and
Joyce Tai of Ink Surge. Inspired by the architect's architectural vector images,
the site lets visitors interactively enter SLab.

The SLab website will also have a groundbreaking new feature, the online
backroom, which will feature the gallery¢s curators choices and collectors
pieces. In this password-protected area, Silverlens and Slab collectors get a
peek into projects that the gallery¢s artists and curators are working on, new
pieces consigned and works by fresh young artists. Artworks will be available
for online viewing for a limited time only.

A highly anticipated exhibition in a much-awaited space: the Silverlens Gallery
Group is proud to open their second gallery, SLab (Silverlens Lab), with visual
artist Patricia “Patty” Eustaquio. Opening on October 16,Thursday, 6 pm, the new
gallery is connected via bridge to Silverlens.

Death to the Major, Viva Minor is Patricia Eustaquio's first solo show in four
years. In that time, she made headway as a sought-after designer making
sculptural art worn as clothing. She continued to paint and sculpt for various
group shows in that time, and her pieces were consistently sold out whether here
in Manila or in Kuala Lumpur, but is only now making a firm return to her
primary medium at SLab.

A Magna Cum Laude graduate of the UP Fine Arts Program, Eustaquio's paintings
and sculptures are commentary to J.S. Bach's piano exercise The Well Tempered
Clavier . There are pianos made of leather and lace, a ceramic violin with an
anatomic heart, and birds--odes to music in silence. Her shaped canvases of
floral silhouettes filled with feathers are fine examples and color and
technique in the tradition of the Dutch masters. Eustaquio's thought processes
in creating her pieces are as well honed as her technique, making her an
exciting contemporary artist.

Death to the Major, Viva Minor by Patricia Eustaquio runs from October 16 to
November 22, 2008 at SLab. Eustaquio will be having an artist talk and film
screening on November 15, Saturday, from 3-5pm.

Accompanying Eustaquio’s show will be an exhibit of new works by SLab
represented artist, Mariano Ching. Ching will be the first to exhibit at
20SQUARE, the smaller gallery for artists, curatorial projects, and collectors /
artists consignments.

His work can be viewed until November 8.

Noelle Katigbak Tan
August 14-September 27, 2008
Opening reception, 6pm on August 14, Thursday

Silverlens Gallery is proud to announce the opening of the first solo show of
Noelle Katigbak Tan in Manila at 6pm on August 14, Thursday. The show will run
until September 27, 2008.

For her show, Noelle Katigbak Tan will be exhibiting two sets of works, Drawing
and Untitled. According to the artist, “These bodies of work depict landscapes
that hover between emerging and being, the seen and the subliminal. They
challenge the viewer to question what it is they can actually see in the
photograph.” Aptly called Drawing, Tan’s series of 18 darkroom printed
photographs seem like sketches made with pencil at first glance. Bathed in pure
white, Tan’s panoramas blind viewers and hint of familiar scenery. A stark
contrast to Drawing, Untitled is a collection of 13 silver gelatin prints in
rich black with spark-like bursts of light.

Paul Roth, Curator of Photography and Media Arts at the Corcoran Gallery of Art
describes Tan’s work: “Noelle Tan makes photographs that are at once conceptual
explorations of our current social unease and technical forays to the medium’s
outer limits. In contrasting tones of black and white, her photographs elide
detail to suggest submerged truths; and dissipate reality to explore the
unknown.“

Noelle Katigbak Tan was born in Manila in 1969. She earned her Bachelor of Fine
Arts degree from New York University and her Master of Fine Arts degree from the
California Institute of Art. She has had solo exhibitions at Civilian Art
Projects, Project Gallery 4, and DC Arts Center in Washington; the Center for
Photography at Woodstock, NY; School 33 Art Center in Baltimore; and the

Silverlens Foundation (SLF) proudly announces the winners of their 2008 Grant
Program. This year, SLF received over 30 applications for the four grant
categories. Similar to last year¢s Grant Program which had numerous
international applicants, applications came from as far as Israel, United States
and Australia. Out of these, only 3 were selected.

SLF Acquisition Grant. The Board of the Silverlens Foundation selects completed
bodies of work to be acquired for the SLF Collection. The 2008 SLF Acquisition
Grant is awarded to second time winner Conrado Velasco for PIXEL TOWERS 1-6:
Deadpan Aesthetics, Lossy Compression & Post-It Notes, and to Lena Cobangbang
for Overland. In Pixel Towers, Conrado Velasco transforms pixilated images of
the Bechers¢ water towers into photographic installations of pink Post-Its,
exploring pictorial issues brought about by technology. Lena Cobangbang¢s
Overland series, on the other hand is a group of photographs using food as
material for recreating miniature landscapes. In these fantasy topographies,
Cobangbang tries to create what is truly utopian.

SLF Completion Grant. Completion Grants are awarded to photographers and visual
artists working with photography to finish an ongoing project or body of work.
The 2008 SLF Completion Grant goes to Filipina-American artist Gina Osterloh for
her Shooting Blanks series, currently being exhibited at Green Papaya Art
Projects. Shooting Blanks is composed of 14 photographs of room-size paper
environments created by Osterloh, which focus on sensations of muteness, the
desire to connect, and rashes - all non-verbal sensations of the body upon her
moving to Manila.

There is no winner of the SLF Curatorial Exhibition Grant for 2008. The Asian
Cultural Council (ACC)-SLF Fellowship Grantee will be announced in June. The
works of this year¢s SLF Grantees will be exhibited at Silverlens Gallery in
December 2008 and will automatically become a part of the Silverlens Foundation
Collection. The SLF Collection is the first permanent collection of photography
in the Philippines. Since 2006, SLF has been accepting applications from
photographers and artists working with photography for acquisition, completion,
curatorial and fellowship grants. Complete grants can be viewed at
www.silverlensphoto.com

The call for entries for the SLF Grant Program 2009 will be announced in October
2008.

Visit Silverlens Foundation 2/F YMC Building 2, 2320 Pasong Tamo Extension,
Makati. Hours are from 10am to 7pm Mondays to Fridays and 1pm to 6pm on
Saturdays. For more information, call 8160044, email manage@...

And of course I brought my trusty 20d with me. I took over 900
shots... no I did not put them all online... only 500... just
kidding.

The new folders are Deli and Agra:

With my 20d of course! I have to admit though I was jelous of one of my
coworkers who has a 40D. The bigger LCD screen is really nice.

I had the honor of being invited to a traditional Indian wedding in
Tumkur this past weekend. I've updated my online photo album with shots
of the wedding and of Tumkur and surroundings. You can find them here:

The dogs roam freely in Bangalore. I'm not sure if they actually belong
to anyone or if people just adopt them. They're not wild just free, but
then the cows and goats appear to be also.

Here are the shots I've collected thus far:

Hi All!

Last week I was looking for some good courses online about Digital Photography
and I found this. It has been very useful for me and I wanted to share it with
you. I really believe that if one wants to be a real professional someday we
have to know what professionals know. That's why I think this is a very good
oportunity to learn. Here it is:

Hello,

Here are 10 new shots of the Vatican which you may not have seen before:

http://tinyurl.com/yplx5n <http://tinyurl.com/yplx5n>

Next week I head off to India to promote my book "The Sorcerer's Song
and the Cat's Meow" and to get some more beautiful photos of this exotic
land. I look forward to sharing those with you in the future.

I bought a new Tamarak backpack to haul my 20d and associated equipment
around. I found that my upper back was getting sore using my labtop
backpack so I bought a camera specific backpack that will also fit my
laptop. It really is a beautiful piece of luggage.

Have a great day!

Arthur
