Absolutely, because the VDP is a V-9938 or V-9958 rather than a
TMS-9918A or TMS-9928A, etc.

I'm not sure what happened when I just a few moments ago sent the message below.
Hmmmm, well here goes again:

Does anyone have the email address for Mike Wright? I need to get in touch with
him and all I can find is the address on the CaDD site which I am not certain is
godd anymore.

The BIOS revision for Intel made boards is shown when you go into the BIOS
setup. It'll be a P with two numbers after it.

Retail and many OEM Intel made boards will have either a white label or
silkscreen with INTEL TYPE: What follows that is what model the board is.

There is usually a string that starts with E silkscreened on the board. It has
nothing to do with the model of the board and the same exact string has been
used on widely different Intel motherboards.

Also look for a white label with some letters and numbers where one string
starts with AA. That's the revision code. In some cases where a board has had a
lot of revisions, Intel will have a different BIOS for different AA code ranges
due to some big change in configuration that make it impossible to write a BIOS
that'll cover the entire revision history.

IMHO when it gets to that point, Intel should give the board a new model
designation.

When my previously well behaved desk-top started randomy crashing it turned out
to be the RAM chips. Eventually, after many rebuilds I changed the ram, and the
problem was fixed

Nadav, it is one of the better peripheral cards for the TI out there. It
also has other advantages, in that it works in building-block fashion with
the other SNUG cards. The EVPC video cards are the first block (and they
work without any of the others), followed by the HSGPL card (probably the
best GRAM card ever designed) and the SGCPU card (which also has built-in
AMS memory). Those three all work together, and you can add the HRD-16 card
to the set too, as it works best with them--and works great without them
too. The ASCSI card is a very stable SCSI interface, and the SPVMC is an
outstanding replacement for the speech synthesizer.

Mark,

I've tested the RAM dozens of times. No problem ever found.

All the crashes I've talked about occur when the PC is idle. You know
left on over night. Next morning dead. Never happens while I'm using it.

Of course, the problem now is that it only boots up in Safe Mode.

Sounds like the power supply, actually. The symptoms you describe say that
the 12V rail is probably going bad. . .12V goes, HD stops turning, and at
the next page swap it crashes. . .

Mark,

I've tested the RAM dozens of times. No problem ever found.

All the crashes I've talked about occur when the PC is idle. You know
left on over night. Next morning dead. Never happens while I'm using it.

Of course, the problem now is that it only boots up in Safe Mode.

I would like to express my gratitude to all for your kind words and thoughts
on my induction into the TI99ers Hall of Fame. It is indeed an honor the be
in the HOF with the likes of Paolo Bagnaresi, Bill Gaskill, Beery Miller,
Charles Good, Barry Boone, Cheryl "Regena" Whitelaw, and so forth. I'd list
them all, but you can always go to the HOF website at http://www.ti99hof.org
and read up on all of them yourself.

Thank you one and all for your congratulatory messages. And a special thanks
to those who helped write my Bio, especially Terrie Masters who was the main
person who worked up the Bio.

I hope not as this particular PC is on its 5th power supply now. It was
purchased new in October of 2003, and it has had 3 motherboards, but
only two CPUs (first was a 2.4 GHz P4 and then a 2.0GHz AMD motherboard
and now an Intel motherboard with the 2.4GHz P4). Also 3 or 4 hard
drives and a couple of dual layer cd-rom drives.

Very unlike my dual 850Mhz PIII Intel Server with dual "hot" 350 Watt
power supplies (both original), embedded SCSI (replaced 2 18GB drives,
and added 2 x 9GB drives and a 35GB drive) and one cd-rom drive
(original) purchased in January 1999 from the same vendor. I added a
DDS3 tape drive, a 640MB Optical drive, a 1.44MB/1.2MB combo floppy
drive in addition to an LS-120 floppy drive.

Maybe I should just turn the PIII Server into a Win98SE TI/Geneve
peripheral? Although I do have VMware 3.02 Workstation, so I could keep
it as a Linux LAN Server, and just host Win98SE via VMware, but I don't
think I would get all the TI/Geneve peripheral benefits this way.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. I am thankful for all of you, your
conversation, friendship, and support!

By permission of Edward Dohmann, I am releasing the EPROM version of TI Workshop
and its related documentation. Edward has graciously agreed that I can put this
download on www.hexbus.com. The only restrictions related to it are that you
can't sell his program, and must freely distribute it. You can burn it to an
EPROM, use it in an emulator, whatever. Please just give him credit if you do
redistribute it.

The version available for download is the 74LS379 version, which works with the
64K cartridge board out of the box. You will need a 27512 or 27C512 EPROM to
burn it.

TI Workshop was released in 1986, and is the largest cartridge program ever
released for the TI-99/4A. It includes the following:

1) Full debugger based on SuperBug by Edgar Dohmann
2) A full memory manager (view, edit, and save memory)
3) A full program loader (load, load/run EA/3 and EA/5)
4) A full disk manager
5) A sector editor
6) A full editor/assembler package

There are some limitations to the module, but Edgar seems OK with us modifying
it if needed. Some that I know of include:

1) Your RAMDisk might get wiped unless it's write protected when using the disk
manager
2) You need to use this cart by itself (i.e. not in a Gram Kracker or Cartridge
Expander)
3) The Disk Manager and other file operations can only do DSK1 to DSK9

Enjoy the program, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank You Jon. Thank you Mr. Edward Dohmann. Thank you "ALL". It appears the
TI-99/4A Community has traveled a long way in the past year.

Happy Thanksgiving - As any teacher can explain. Our rewards are of giving
from our hearts.

Enjoy the Day,

Postle
