Chuck, I watched the occultation through my 80mm refractor. I have seen some
close encounters, but not an actual moon occultation. It was neat to watch.

I shared the Io Europa occultation with lots of viewers at the Rippavilla space
themed Corn Maze. 6" Dob only showed moons as small bright dots, but I had
quite a view people come back to see the moons in different positions. They
were amazed that you really could see something move in space.

Ganymede is going to occult Io on Thursday, October 29, at 9:07 CDT.
The weather forecast is for clouds, unfortunately. Ganynede occults
Europa on Friday, October 30, at 10:59 CDT. Jupiter sets less than two
hours later, making it low in the sky at the time of the event. I think
clouds are in the forecast for Friday, too. I got these times from the
Abrams Planetarium Sky Calender.

Here is our shot at IC1396A, the Elephant's Trunk Nebula using the
AT8IN. Pretty tough target from our light-polluted skies. It took
several rounds of processing to get a result we were happy with. Turned
out pretty good considering we had about 19 mags/sq. arcsec conditions.

I know many of us were fixed on the actual occultation of Europa, but here is
something I came across on the Guide user group. This guy imaged and caught the
shadow of IO crossing Europa almost 2 hours after the occultation. Just click
on the link for the event - he does an awesome presentation. The video and
simulation is toward the bottom of his page. Awesome job!

Dear all,
sometimes I am using Guide8 to create a simulation video sequence. And this
feature works great.
On my overview page with links to all my PHEMU09 observations and reports
http://www.dangl.at/mutual.htm
you will also find an Io-Europa eclipse event
http://www.dangl.at/2009/occult_mut/091003ju1e2/091003ju1e2e.htm
For this 1E2 event I created a 50x time lapse video. The video link is
beside the data file and diagram links on the 1E2 page. The video consists
of a simulation video in a real video both running parallel. The little time
offset between reality and simulation of this eclipse event is clear
visible.
The main video is the real video recorded with the WAT-120N and the inserted
video is a simulation video created with Guide8.

Gerhard

I know most people willl be at home with candy and their telescopes
tonight, but if you don't get many trick or treaters, you are welcome to set up
your telescopes outside the Sudekum Planetarium this evening.
We had 250 people for Fright Light laser shows last night, and I am
expecting better attendance tonight. Shows are at 8, 9, and 10 pm. Bring treats
if
you want to share with kids and adults.
Hope to see you there, bwahaha.

Hi everyone;
The Hands-On Science Center in Tullahoma is having it's last public
Astronomy Night until Spring on Saturday November 7 from 7:00 PM to
8:00 PM any one interested can come to look through a telescope or
bring your own telescope and help out. Come on along if you are
close enough to Tullahoma for it to be worth the trip. Since DST
ended we can probably get in some observing time looking at Jupiter
before the program starts.
The weather forecast looks GOOD for a change!!!
I'll see you there if you can make it.

Herbert, I will be in the area. I'll bring a scope or two.

The VSSP site will be open about 4:30 Thursday evening. Looks like Thursday and
Friday are the best nights. Maybe Saturday will clear too.
There's an expanded parking area many new camp sites cleared. There's a new
shower (propane Triton hot water heater) on line. About 8 miles of trails are
cleared or mowed. Many have RSVP'ed and it should be a really good event. A
revised road and topo map will be on the TNastronomy group site under files/
directions.
Thanks,
Eric
The Barnard-Seyfert Astronomical Society will be having a private star party on
Saturday, November 14th at the turnout near where mile marker 435.5 would be on
the Natchez Trace. This is the first turnout south of where Highway 96 crosses
under the Natchez Trace.
We will start gathering, weather permitting, when it starts getting dark.
Cancellation notices, if any, will appear on the Yahoo tnastronomy news group.

Weather permitting, of course.

I am posting on behalf of someone else. If you are going to observe, can
I send this person your way?
I'm new to Nashville. Is there a group attached to the Sudekum that's
doing a viewing of the Leonids on the 17th? If not, do you know if
there may be a group not attached to the Sudekum I could contact?
Thanks!

I had figured on going to the Water Valley Overlook on the Natchez
Trace, weather permitting; however, it looks like the weather isn't
going to permit.
Does anyone have a favorite frequency for listening to FM scattering
from meteors?

I don't know about radio frequency of a local FM, but this is a good site to
listen to radar feed. They are based out of Texas and you will hear the
distinctive pings as the meteors streak by.

This year's star party at the VSSP dark sky site turned out pretty good. We had
intermittent haze but when it cleared it was great viewing. Thanks to all those
that could make it.
In the future, viewing there may be just a few days notice. It's just too
dificult to plan, organize and get everything ready in advance. I'll be setting
up a "bcc" list of when I'll be up there for a weekend. Reply to

Hi All,
Got to looking and realized we forgot to share this with you. Our first attempt

Wound up going with Starizona's method "2". Turned out pretty good, but still
have a lot to learn.

Tonight, Dr. Spencer Buckner of Austin Peay State University will talk
about How to buy astronomy gifts (or for yourself) from $10 to $10,000.
This program will start at 7:30 pm at the Adventure Science Center, and
admission is free. The Shop will also be open so you can buy a
Galileoscope or purchase the December 2009 issue of Sky and Telescope
which features SIX pages about our very on Sudekum Planetarium.
See you soon.

Thanks for posting your image and the Ha blending method. I heard Chris Schur
talk about a couple of good methods to blend Ha data with RGB to avoid the
dreaded Salmon color in 2006. The Starizona method also seems like an effective
one, and your image color is very nice. I haven't done much narrow band imaging,
but would like to do some this winter. In addition to using Ha, are you guys
doing any other narrow band imaging, like SII or OIII? I am collecting a dark
frame library for 15 to 30 minute subexposures so that I can start doing some
mapped color imaging in SII/Ha/OIII.

Thanks, Mark!
At this point, we're just trying to "get the hang" of Ha, and adding RGB to it.
No immediate plans to get into OIII or SII. I also looked-up some of Chris'
methods and will try some of those out. I've heard that Russell Croman has some
techniques as well, but couldn't find them just briefly browsing his site (will
look deeper next time).

The public star party planned for tonight at Shelby Bottoms is still on. The
weather forecasts have a very slight easing of the cloud cover. We are going to
give it a try. I doubt that the viewing will be great, or even good. You might
want to bring your less difficult to set up rig if you have one.
