It'd be very hard for Oracle to do that without imposing just the sorts of
controls you cite for other resellers. It's too bad, really. Oracle
doesn't have any tier 1 products that aren't under the metals support
program -- and that'd require an active patch and upgrade program for TOAD,
as well as internal testing, and a release schedule that matched server
upgrades.
I know a rework of SQL*Plus is in the works, but I have *no* idea what they
have in mind for it. TOAD would make a nice replacement... ;)
Oracle consultants tell their clients about TOAD, though, and that can't
help but increase its penetration.
> tool, which is maybe why Oracle is TOAD's single largest user :)
No surprise there... Oracle staff recognize great tools when they see 'em...

I received an email this morning in response to the message in the fixes.txt
file. The following is my response to that email. I thought you all might be
interested or might have comments.
> I understand turning down a lousy offer like the buyout but what's wrong with
marketing Toad? If you pair up with a reputable firm that understands the
market, you could do a lot better than the puny cash offer you had. I think
that most of the current users would gladly pay for Toad if it were fairly
overpriced.
The problem with a co-market arrangement is loss of all control. Releases would
be determined by marketing calendars. Versions would be planned at meetings;
not by what I feel like doing at any given moment. Guys in suits start exerting
influence over design issues and TOAD becomes just another Sql NaviGuesser or
Sql PlayStation. The reason TOAD has become one of--if not the--most popular
Oracle tool in such little time is that it fits developers. (No, it isn't just
the money.) I can't tell you how many emails I get from people who really hate
the interfaces of all of the commercial tools. They would rather use TOAD (and
possibly forego some features) than use the bloated commercial tools and give up
speed, ease of use, etc. Everything that makes TOAD so desireable to tens of
thousands of users would be lost the moment TOAD goes commercial unless I
commecialized TOAD myself. Which is something I have neither the knowledge nor
inclination to do.
> Since you know when Platinum has been hitting Toadsoft, you must have other
infomation available. ... one thing I'd really like to see on the web is a list
of everyone that uses Toad.
That will never, ever happen. If Platinum offered 10 million for Toad on the
condition that they get the web log files, I'd tell them which appendage to...
No one but no one will ever see the log files, any list of users, any list of
registrants. Period. I send out license files everyday but I only know the
most recent registrant because I don't keep records and I always overwrite the
same file. The log files are private - PERIOD. I only post the Snooping page
because the intense snooping by Platinum is very humorous and because such
blatant corporate "snooping" deserves public recognition.
I will tell you this, if you started a list of every major firm in every
industry, TOAD is probably used in 2 out of every 3 names you could come up
with. Or has at least been downloaded by same. TOAD isn't just used by
small, el-cheapo organizations looking to save a buck. The log file is full of
firms that are the tops of virtually every industry. Firms that could easily
afford to buy any other tool but choose to use TOAD because it works for them.
If anyone thinks Toadies are just being cheap, the log file proves otherwise.
> ... although I would hate to see TOAD continue without you at the helm.
Which would be probable following a buyout. Why would anyone keep me around?
Besides, who would buy TOAD to keep it as a product? Quest and Platinum's own
products are loosing serious share and $$$ to TOAD, so why would either of them
buy TOAD unless to kill it off entirely? Actually, Platinum doesnt have a
low-range product like TOAD but TOAD does compete directly with NaviGuessor.
The only way I could see TOAD being purchased yet remaining available would be
if Oracle itself decided to ship TOAD. I have no idea how that would or
whether it even could ever happen. TOAD is unlike any existing Oracle dev tool,
which is maybe why Oracle is TOAD's single largest user :)
As TOAD becomes more popular, it is inevitable that buyout rumors will surface.
And you just have to realize that they are just rumors. Although I heard a
"rumor" that Platinum was buying ERwin and Logiworks. Which turned out to be
true. "Rest in peace, sweet Erwin. Alas, we knew thee well."

I have to manually switch that when I dial in to the db from home. I guess I
should have mentioned it in the Solving Connection Problems FAQ. Or TOAD should
check for it following an ORA-12154 error?

Can someone help regarding an NT equivalent?

Another little gotcha - and admittedly this has
nothing to do
with TOAD per se: sql*net easy config is sooo
helpful, there was
so much pain in the early days of sqlnet2 w/o
it.
However, the versions Ive used dont ask for a
port number; they
assume the Oracle default of 1521. So be ready
to edit
tnsnames.ora if yours is different.
The real misery is when you get a working
tnsnames, and then add
or modify another entry. All your ports are then
reset to 1521 - whether they should be or not. Always seems to catch you
just before a
demo :-(

I too, have recently had a connection problem (ORA-12154). In my case, SQL*Plus
was fine, so was TNSPING, and SQL*Net Easy was also good. There were no recent
client software installs. I even created a brand new alias which still didn't
work. Everything in SQLNET.ORA and TNSNAMES.ORA looked okay. The solution was to
explicitly set the TNS_ADMIN parameter. There are several ways to do this based
on your platform. I'm on NT, so I chose to create a registry entry
(local_machine/software/oracle) called TNS_ADMIN and set it my

In my case, I had installed PO8 lite; since I could connect w/sql*plus
over a dial-up line, I assumed TOAD would work (tho it didnt).
According to Jim below, that was an incorrect assumption. The solution
was to remove PO8 off the machine (an event in itself) and install
sql*net from the d2k CD.

The 2k products are infamous for squashing oracle client settings. You have two
choices: install sqlnet from a client CD or uninstall Dev 2K. In either event,
you will probably have to go back into EasyCfg and reconfigure your databases.
I always copy the contents of Orawin\Network elsewhere when installing anything
that comes from Oracle.

These are all questions I've answered in the last week or so.
* I don't need to see the Access or Sequences tabs on the Browser, can I remove
them?
Go to the TABS portion of the Object Browser tabs and right-click with the
mouse.
* My server has a thousand schemas although most of the users are only used for
secure logins. I only want to see certain schemas in the Schema lists in TOAD.
How can I do that?
Go to the View Menu and select Oracle User's List. This is a complete list of
the schemas/users in your database. TOAD will display all of the SELECTED
schemas in the schema lists. If you want to restrict the schema lists, select
only the items in this list that you want to see.
* When I create a new Procedure or Package in the Procedure Editor, it has a
default template. I would prefer the template look like our standard Procedure
(headers, comments, etc.)
Look in the TOAD\TEMPS directory for NEWFUNC, NEWPACK, NEWTRIG, and NEWPROC.
These are the files loaded by TOAD when you click the New button. You can edit
these are you wish.
* There are some Oracle reserved words not supported in the syntax highlighting.
Look in the TOAD\TEMPS directory for SQLWORDS.TXT and PLSWORDS.TXT. You can
edit these as you wish.
* Whenever I want a list of column names, I open an Object Browser next to a Sql
editor so I can see the columns to type.
First, you can multi-select and copy (Control-C) from the list of column names
for a table on the Object Browser. You can also copy or drag-n-drop from the
Columns Select Dialog window. This window is displayed by clicking the
next-to-last button on the second row of buttons on the Sql Editor and the
Procedure Editor.
* I only see one row of buttons on the Sql Editor?
Go to the Sql Editor and right-click while the mouse is anywhere in the top
editor portion of the window. Select the option to Show Edit Toolbar
* When I am using the Object Browser to look at the source code of a Procedure,
it would be nice to be able to open a procedure editor without having to cut and
paste the source code.
Go to the Browser and select the Procs tab. Select a procedure you want to
edit. Click the second button (it has a lightning bolt).
* When I use the Browser to peruse the data in tables, I would prefer to select
only a sampling of the data. I dont want to fetch all of the rows in the table.
Go to the Options window, select the Browser Options tab. There is an option
to Limit Data Grids to xxx number of rows. This setting will affect ALL data
grids in TOAD including the results of adhoc queries executed in the Sql Editor.
When TOAD ceases fetching data because this limit is reached, a message will
display.
* On the table create window, I would like to be able to type the first
character of the data type when selecting the column data type. When I type V,
TOAD shows VARCHAR. But when I type V again for Varcahr2, nothing happens.
This is standard listbox behavior. If you want Varchar2, type V to get
VARCHAR and then type space to advance to VARCHAR2. The space bar goes to the
next item on the list. In fact you could space bar through all of the items.
Also, if you want to use the drop-down list but dont want to reach for the mouse
when you've tabbed to the data type column, type Alt-DownArrow. That is also
default list box behavior.
* I would like to export the contents of a grid in the Sql Editor to a
spreadsheet. Can TOAD export to Excel?
No, but TOAD can save data in tabbed delimited or comma delimited formats
which can be loaded by Excel. Select the data you want, right-click over the
the grid, select SaveAs.
* Whenever I select an individual Procedure on the Object Browser, I get an
error message.
TOAD uses the All_ARGUMENTS and USER_ARGUMENTS views to display the arguments
for a procedure. These views weren't available until 7.3. If you are using an
earlier database (7.1-7.2) and have access to a 7.3 database, you can actually
have a SYS user compile the views from CATALOG.SQL included with 7.3. I don't
want to make the view scripts available with TOAD because that just wouldn't be
kosher. there are other methods for finding arguments (such as SYS.ARGUMENT$)
but using these public views is then only method that doesn't require special
privileges for TOAD users.
* I've added a table using SqlPlus and when I return to TOAD, the table doesnt
appear on the Browser. How can I refresh the table names without closing and
restarting TOAD?
TOAD caches table names for performance reasons since they are used on so
many windows throughout TOAD. You have several choices top refresh the table
names. (1) you can set the Options\BrowserTab to Refresh Table Names on Every
Display. This option causes the table names to be requeried every time a list
of Table names is displayed. This deafeats the internal caching. (2) Click the
refresh button at the top-right of the Browser.

Frequently, people download TOAD and are unable to connect to a database they
can reach using Sql*Plus or other Oracle tools. NOTE: SqlPlus doesn't depend
on SqlNet so a working connection through SqlPlus does NOT validate your Sqlnet
installation. You will know when your client is properly configured for Sqlnet
and has valid TNS entries because TOAD will connect. If TOAD does not connect,
your client is not properly configured.
Unable to load OCI dll or OCI not properly registered. Either of these messages
means Sqlnet is not present or that the installation of Sqlnet was botched in
some way. A later release of an Oracle tool could have obliterated your
settings. Re-install SqlNet from the Oracle client CD.
Invalid TNS names. "But it's the same alias I use from SqlPlus" Again, that
means nothing once you leave Oracle's own tools. Go to your Oracle_Home\Bin
directory and run EasyCfg. Do you see your alias there? EasyCfg is the
fastest method to confirm a TNS entry. If you can see the alias from EasyCfg,
TOAD should connect if SqlNet
is also configured. Note that having multiple Oracle Homes could mean that
EasyCfg sees one TNS configuration while Sqlnet and TOAD see another.
Have you installed Dev2000 recently? Or PO8? Or an update of OEM? All of
these applications are known to stomp on existing SqlNet and TNS configurations.
Almost any connection problem (other than simply missing TNS entries for a
database) will require a re-installation of SqlNet. Some problems could be
manually fixed; however, using the Oracle install is the simplest.

2 questions really.
1. How do you open toad connections to 2 different servers at the same
= time?
2. Having done that, how do you keep track of which windows refer to =
which databases?
-- snip --
Clive,
Make sure that you have multiple sqlnet aliases created (ie you should be
able to connect to all database instances via sqlplus). In TOAD, you can
open multiple connections, the dropdown list will include all sqlnet aliases
available. If you create a new alias while you have TOAD running, and
want to connect to it, you will need to exit TOAD and restart it to see the
new alias.
**** Jim, any chance of the drop down list refreshing every time it is
opened so that we don't have to exit and restart ?? *****
Once multiple connections are made, each screen has the connection
stated in a box in the lower left of the screen, easy to see.
Regards
Bryan Bell

By way of explanation<s>
I want to look at the *real* database and our Development Database at the same
time, obviously most
of the objects, owners etc. will be the same. The Toad window captions do not
seem to carry
connection info.

Does anyone have any interest in ponying up $50-$100 each to
send to Toadman in appreciation of his efforts? Judging from the
level of response he gets, he could be in for a pile of money, at
least enough for a fairly rambunctious weekend on us. I don't
know that he needs or wants it, but I thought it would be a nice
gesture. If he objects, he can return it. I have had a note on my
screen for months, reminding myself to send something, but hadn't
gotten around to it (read procrastination). Anyway, if you're
interested, flood the guy.
Toadman, if you're reading this, and object to some reciprocal
largesse, please let us know right away.
Thanks,
Geoff Houck

This was a little tongue in cheek, and it was a "pressure group" for a debugger
not a better editor. The guy (Jim?) has said he's willing to do a debugger.
It's just that he reckons it would take him 4 weekends to do it and would mean
that he wouldn't be doing lots of small mods which is what he likes to do.
He's also worried that not everyone writes a lot of pl/sql and so it would
be a lot of effort which wouldn't help everyone. If anyone else (like me)
has to maintain code written by people from France, Germany, Switzerland,
England,Denmark,India and Croatia then having a debugger would surely be
on the top of their wants list and I can't see the harm in asking for it.
The guy is an absolute star - no question.

PS - there's no point forming a "pressure group" to get a better pl/sql
editor included - there's only one guy writing this in his spare time, not a
whole corporation. Besides, it's free software! Give the guy a break!
(and credit for what he's done).

Totally agree, Jim must be living on a planet with a 48 hour day going by
the amount of work he gets through.

I use TOAD happily at work, and just set up my home machine to
dial in to our company network over tcp/ip, using a hardware device
known as the "defender".
I installed SQL*NET v2 from my dev2k CD, and after defining an
instance via sql*net easy configure, I was able to access said
instance via sql*plus on my Win95 desktop.
So, in great anticipation, I fired up TOAD and entered the
machine/user/pw, and got the &^#@* "TNS12154-could not resolve service
name"
Im at a loss to understand how sql*plus could work but not TOAD.
Any help greatly appreciated; Id rather go into work than telecommute
if it means using sql*plus instead of TOAD.

Okay, let's give this mailing list thingy a whirl...
On the Trigger tab in Obj Browser, the schema name is alway prepended
to the trigger name. If the Procedure Editor option to include the
owner in the extracted source is set, the schema name is included
twice. This causes a compilation error which give a rather obtuse
message.
Thanks, Rich.

Hi -
There seems to be a problem with version 4.07.20 with table create
scripting. TOAD does not seem to create constraint clauses or indexes for
UNIQUE constraints (unless it's a PRIMARY KEY).

Hello there,
Great idea to have a toad mailing list. Am I the
first???
My name is Gary Dean and I'm developing applications
in pl/sql and forms 4.5 / 5.0 in Switzerland.
Toad is a wonderful tool, but it does need a pl/sql
debugger. Who'll join me in forming a pressure group???
Ciao,
GD

I recently installed Oracle's Developer 2000 product, and the installation seems
to have updated my SQL*Net client as well. Now when I attempt to log in with
TOAD, I get ORA-03121 "no interface driver connected - function not performed".
According to the Oracle message manual, "This message occurs usually because the
SQL*Net driver is not loaded into memory or there is a mismatch of the version
of the driver." I suspect the latter because of my recent installation. I can
connect with no problems through SQL*Plus, so I know that the connection itself
is fine and the database is up.
Here are the versions of various Oracle components which are currently
installed:
SQL*Net 2.3.4.0.0
SQL*Plus 3.3.4.0.0
Oracle7 Server Release 7.3.2.2.0
PL/SQL Release 2.3.2.2.0
I *think* that my previous SQL*Net client version number was 2.3.2.1.4.
Any thoughts on the matter?
