You are quite welcome. I can't count the number of times I've had bugs
that plagued me for hours or days that were only a single character
like that.

Great. That's fixed it Graham. Thanks.

Colours do work under cygwin but the standard black shell background
makes the darker hues harder to read.

e.g. I found the following easier to view ...

# === PRIORITY COLORS ===
PRI_A = YELLOW # color for A priority
PRI_B = LIGHT_GREEN  # color for B priority
PRI_C = LIGHT_PURPLE   # color for B priority
PRI_X = WHITE # color for rest of them

Cheers.

Licensing is GPL, which gives you full permission to modify it to C#,
or any other language. As far as the thumb drive, C# may not be the
best choice. C# is going to require the .NET runtime on any computer
you run it on.

However, if you still want to do it I would be willing to help out.

I was thinking of doing a ruby version. I don't know if it would be
worth it with the python version and all, but I am wondering if there
might be interest from people who are in to Ruby on Rails, and who
don't want to install cygwin or python on their machine as well. So

The way it's going, someone may as well do the base library of it in C/C++, then use something like SWIG ( http://www.swig.org/ ) to let everyone write their connections to the library in the language they want.  ;)

Jimmy,

I've never worked on an open source project before.  I thought this would be a good project to start on.  I am away on business for the rest of November so I probably won't start until after then.  If you are still interested, let me know and I'll set something up in the early part of December.

Thanks,

todo.sh currently has this as its first line:
#! /bin/sh

This works on systems that link sh to bash, such as Ubuntu 6.06, but
it actually uses extensions provided by bash that are not present in
the regular Bourne shell.

Systems that use a regular sh, such as Ubuntu 6.10 [1], fail. The easy
fix is to just change the first line to:
#! /bin/bash

When invoked as sh, bash don't use the featured extensions. That's a
reason why I usually invoke as /bin/sh in the scripts I create, to
ensure backwards compatability.

I can't believe that Ubuntu 6.10 uses a regular sh instead of
bash. Instead, after following the link, I see Ubuntu changed bash for
dash! Another good reason for keeping on using Debian instead. :)

Cordially, Ismael

This is almost off-topic, but i thought I'd post here because of all the
discussions of forking the todo.sh project lately. My biggest problem
with todo.sh, the remind script, and services like 30boxes and Google
Calendar is that there are features from each one that I like, but
they're not really compatible.

Well, someone took the ideas behind todo.sh and wrote a perl script that
uses 30boxes.com as a back-end. I like this concept because it allows
me to use the command-line whenever I am at one of my own computers, but
if I want to use my phone, or someone else's computer, I can just go to
30boxes.com to see what I need to be doing.

Anyway, the script is at the link below, and I was wondering if anyone
had tried it. Also, I'd love to hear about other ways to integrate these
types of services.

Bugs that should be fixed (in my opinion):

* #!/usr/bin/env python
* Case-insensitive sorting

An idea:

* "t do p:project" or "todo.py do @tag" to mark all related tasks done?

Here are three mods that I've been using for a while,
the first two aims at reducing information, making
listings easier to read and more concise:

* Hide listed tag out of listing
* Hide WAIT and done entries out of listing
* Include front end to birdseye.py in todo.py

Patch that hides current tag, as well as WAIT and finished tasks.

Hi Vidar,

I commited a new version to the svn repository at google with some of
your suggestions applied (<http://code.google.com/p/todo-py/>).

I introduced a new configurable boolean variable sortIgnoreCase which
can be used to set the sort method. So you can choose the desired
behavior.

> An idea:
>
> * "t do p:project" or "todo.py do @tag" to mark all related tasks
> done?

that's not so easy. Someone like me could use @Wartet instead of WAIT,
so it wouldn't work in that case. Maybe we provide a configurable list
with stop words, which will be suppressed in any output. Could you work
on something like that?

> * Include front end to birdseye.py in todo.py

[x] done.
You have to copy birdseye.py into a convenient location so that the
import statement will find the module.

Thank you very much for your work. Please test the new version!

have fun

most excellent, Graham ! loving it !
one (ok, two) small things;
1) there's no -V (version) option, and the -h text still says "Version
1.5.2-python" even thought it isn't, and
2) a tiny rfe; I'd like it if, when entering initial todo text, a
leading single upper case letter was immediately recognised as the
priority level (I know, all I have to do is enclose it in quotes, but
that involves holding the shift key, pressing the "9" key, entering
the priority, while holding the shift key AGAIN, and then, as if that
weren't enough, holding the shift key AGAIN while hitting the "0"..
and that's just TOO HARD !      ;-)

thanks for the fine work !

My version of todo.sh adds a comment feature that is similar to what you want. To make this work properly each note has a unique alphanumeric ID. So after I add a new todo item I can add a note by "t comment ID This is a comment." and to view the comments on an item all I have to do is "t show ID". The only problem is it's only available as a shell script and your existing files have to be modified. The problem with adding notes/comments to the existing structure is the numbers change depending on where in the todo.txt file they are. This is why I changed to using a unique ID for each item. To make the changes I include a migration script. Check it out at http://lorance.freeshell.org/todo/

I believe that it would be easier to add to the todo script the ability to read "n:XYZ.txt," where "XYZ.txt" is the notes for that particular entry.

That way your notes about an entry could be more than one line; instead, it could be all the reference info related to a topic. That way also multiple todos could reference the same note.

Then in the todolist folder, you could have a subfolder that all the notes would reside in.

The todo script could then be modified to append to the notes file (t n) or display the contents of the notes file (t lsn) or delete the note (t deln).

I may have to work on this tomorrow morning.

This would be brilliant as my sometimes cryptic todo begs for further details.
Is there current thinking along these lines ? How would they be added ? how would they be read ?

maybe
t a "(B) @comp do important stuff p:cli-wellness n:install and test todotxt plug-ins, integrate remind functionality and establish reporting approach"
or
t a "(B) @comp do important stuff p:cli-wellness"
then
t n (or note) 57 "install and test todotxt plug-ins, integrate remind functionality and establish reporting approach"

then
t ls @comp
57 (B) @comp do important stuff p:cli-wellness
or
t lsn (or lsnote)@comp
57 (B) @comp do important stuff p:cli-wellness
note: install and test todotxt plug-ins, integrate remind functionality and establish reporting approach

whadya think ?
ps. I'm using (and loving) todo.py

Quotes are not required when adding text using todo.py from the
command line unless the text includes characters that the shell
interprets to mean something.

These must be quoted since they mean something in bash -- ymmv:

!, #, (, ), $, &, *, \, |, ;, <, >, `, ~

These don't need to be quoted iirc:

@, %, ^, _, :, ,, ?, ., =, +, [, ], {, }

Hope this helps,

Graham

I added your suggestion as RFE (<http://code.google.com/p/todo-py/
issues/list>). Your idea sounds good for me. Are there any objections
here from the list?

ouch ;-) The prepend function now preserves any priority, which
stands at the beginning of a todo. Please test the new version 1.7.8-
py from <http://todo-py.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/todo.py>

have fun!

Ok - looks like things are moving forward swiftly thanks to Karsten.
He submitted a patch that handles priorities with the prepend function.

As I see it we have several options to consider to give priority
functionality to the add function:

todo.py add A task
todo.py add [a] task
todo.py add {a} task

I worry that your suggestion is not fail safe -- ie. new people will
accidentally add 'A task' not realizing this feature exists. The []
and {} both have the advantage over () that they don't need escaping -
at least on the bash shell.

Any other thoughts before we implement this?

Graham

Well I went ahead an added functionality as follows:

t add [a] task 1
t add {b} task 2
t add "(c) task 3"
t add task 4
t add A task 5
t add task [a] 6

which gives:

   1: (A) task 1
   2: (B) task 2
   3: (C) task 3
   4: task 4
   5: A task 5
   6: task [a] 6

Hopefully that will work for everyone -- if not we can always revert.

I've recently become enamored with the idea of using todo.txt and your
todo.sh script.

I downloaded cygwin, and have been trying to get todo.sh to work, but
I can't figure out how to keep .todo as ".todo" in windows. Is there a
way to rewrite it so that the todo.sh script can pull from a renamed file?

Sorry... I'm really new to the bash scripting side of things.

open source is NEAT !
:-)
i think the [a] or [A] option is best.. or laziest, anyhoo, almost as lazy as [a

would the square be translated to the (A) ?

y'know what I'm struggling with now ?
the schmoo that yahoo groups responses puts into gmail, thats what !
makes editing resposes mildly infuriating !

amusing things I might try to get some other python pals to play with;
integrating palm data using pclt

and printout to index cards ala hipster PDA

Not only would it be easier to keep comments in another file, it may
be more according to the "Getting Things Done" way of doing things.
Information you need in order to get something done would go in your
Reference file, in order to not clutter up your To Do list.

By the way, David, according to GTD, each one of your stuff in your
"do important stuff" example would be its own to do item, since you
can only do them one at a time, and they are separate tasks.

Hope that helps!
