Subject: User Manuals Wanted
swap_and_shop

As I was browsing through the photo gallery I realized that with the
switch over from yahoo clubs that the cartridge manual pages no
longer show up very well...

I will attempt to fix that problem, and I will also add instructions
for Hyperspace very very soon.. Was wondering if anybody would be
willing to scan instructions for Pooyan, Traffic Jam, and Deep
Six... I don't think Tomy is going to care?

I have managed to find several websites with classic basic programs..
Here are a couple of links;

From Sky and Telescope Magazine...

Not sure how many of these might work on a tutor... This are
astronomy based programs...

http://skyandtelescope.com/resources/software/article_326_1.asp

The next link is for Classic Basic Programs. These should work on a
Tutor or any other computer, but may require some modification...
These are from Creative Computing I believe....

http://www.moorecad.com/classicbasic/home.html

At any rate, I will be adding some of these into the files area of
the club after I test them out on a tutor..

Thanks

The Swap..

I would like to thank Swap_And_shop for the web addresses for the
Programs written in Basic . Quite interesting .
Does anyone have a Manual for the Tomy Tutor? Would even be
interested in a photo copy of one or scanned for this group.

Hi,
I don't have the manual, but I have compiled an extensive keyword list,
including undocumented keywords, their syntax and use. I'm out of town
this weekend, but I could send you this list (when I can locate it on my
HD) or I could post it to the files section here at the club. The list
BTW is based on a list from Cameron Kaiser with contributions from my
personal hacking of the Tutor.

Now I'm off to the Dayton Hamvention for the weekend!

Have a look at the full keyword list in the files area, as tokens.txt

<==

There's no documentation there.

Someone should redo this list some time.

TT BASIC is very similar to the BASIC for the TI 99/4a.

You can see some programming examples in the files area too.

<snip>

I have the "YOUR TOMY TUTOR COMPUTER" manual. It is a spiral-bound, 80-odd
page manual designed to prop-up on the desk and flip through both ways --
first half on one side of the pages, then turn around the other way to read
the second half. Kind of like those drink or dessert menus you see at
restaurants.

I think Cameron Kaiser has a copy of the manual, too. I have not seen any
scans of it on the web or ftp sites. As far as the documentation goes, I
suppose it is sufficient, but not nearly as good as the manuals that came
with a 99/4A.

I have two of them, but before I get besieged with requests for the other,
I'm keeping one in its "pristine" condition and the other is the dogeared
well-thumbed manual I actually use.

I have one of the flip-books too. It's only useful as a jumping off
point; it's incomplete and contains too many inaccuracies.

If you don't believe me, ask Wizard Kludgefinder, who wrote some of

The BASIC manual doesn't say anything about playing more than one
note at a time!

Well, the Tomy Tutor seems to be a sort of clone of the TI 99/4A.
This is kind of a shame, 'cause a VPEEK and VPOKE command would have
made the Tomy Tutor more useful.

P.S. Animated GIFs suck. I wish Internet Explorer had a
checkbox, "do not animate animated GIFs." I can barely type, 'cause
MS I-Explorer is too busy animating the ad above, "Message Alert."

Hey,
According to Cameron Kaiser the book (which I've never seen) even
mentions the use of MID$ (as in M$ BASIC) when the actual statement is
SEG$, the same as TI BASIC. I've discovered more by applying my
knowledge of TI BASIC to Tomy BASIC, as they are very similar.

Hey,
I don't know what version of M$IE you use, but the earlier versions of
it allowed you to turn off all graphic loading. You might want to turn
that off when you're here, then turn it back on when you cruise other
parts of the web. I've never seen any version of M$IE past 4.X, which
started crashing my system regularly, so I've switched to Netscape 4.XX
when I'm in Windows, same as I use when I'm in OS/2. And I do most of
my Yahoo replies through my email program, so I'm seldom actually at the
Yahoo groups.

And I'm not sure what any of this has to do with Star Wars ;)

Good deal! I'll look forward to seeing these newsletters soon. BTW,
what format are you going to use to post them?

Also, missed you at the CCAG show today. I managed to fill the

bring mine again as I did last year. Wish you'd been there.

I have just recently had a chance to go through the newsletters, and I
thought I would take a moment to share some general information.
Right now I am at work and do not have the newsletters in front of
me.. But here are some discoveries;

1) Tomy Tutor Demonstration Cartridge.--- This is mentioned in the
Tomy Tutor Newsletter. Surprise Surprise!

2) Apparently a club member published a Tomy Tutor Book. This would
probably not have an ISBN number, and there are various ways to
publish a "book". It could be nothing more than typewritten pages
that were spiral bound... More info on this will follow..

3) Tomy Tutor Game Cassettes... These apparently were basic programs
that club members programmed and then sold through the club newsletter
for about $10.00. The cassette titles do not appear to be very
original, just adaptations of basic programs from other computer
systems.

4) A few cartridges that appear to be Pyuuta cartridges that I have
not heard of, I will need to compare this list with Kameron Kaiser...

5) Interesting history of the old Tomy Tutor club, seems like only
about 9 or 10 newsletters were published. It went down really fast
from what I can tell. Apparently the last surviving club members
attempted to order bulk cartridge titles from Japan. The cost was
very prohibitive as the club was only allowed to buy titles in massive
quantities, and apparently they could not afford the project.

It looks to me that the Tomy Tutor Newsletter lasted about a year and
a half.

Anyhow, just thought I would share my preliminary observations..

Think you might be referring to the tutorial written by Dr. Dinovo.
I have a couple of chapters of this. It was pages printed out on his
dot matrix printer, then xeroxed.

I had one of these, a cassette with two GBASIC programs. I could
never get it to load. I don't know where I put it in the intervening
years (17 years, now). Too bad; with what I know now, I could
probably resurrect the picture at least.

If the copying machine here ever gets fixed, I'll send you and Davey
what I have -- I also have the pinout diagram for one of the ports,
as well as the schematic for the printer interface. Cameron already
has copies of what I've got, made before the demise of the copier.

And, of course, I have some of the listings of BASIC programs, that
you could get by mailing one of the members. I've put some of those
in the FILES area

Try typing them in!

James,
On my old computer the Adobe software was agonizingly slow and prone to
crashing so I avoided anything in .pdf format. That's why I actually
typed the docs for the Aquarius and MC-10 in text format and put them on
my website. I started on the TS1000 and TI-99 docs but never finished
them. I don't own the book for the Tomy Tutor so I can't even begin to
do that. I have a scanner but OCR was also slow and didn't work very
well. Come winter I might get back to my docs project, including the
aforementioned books and the JR200U manual.

Davey Brain
PS: If anyone has the Tomy book and wants to copy it for me I can see
about getting it up too.
