Hi all.
I haven't checked out my groups in quite a while , and it looks
like others haven't with this group either. The Tomy Tutor truly is
a rare computer and information about it seems to be almost non
existent. I haven't posted lately. In the future I will and hope
others will too. This Group keeps the Tomy Alive.

Hi.

Sounds like you have a nice system there. Are Tomy Tutor's rare?
Not really. I would say that for anybody that wants one, they can
usually be found on Ebay if one is patient, on a regular basis.
During the course of a month, you might see 3 or 4 Tomy Tutor
systems show up for auction. For the serious, long term collector,
everything you have is rather common.

Tomy Tutor's usually go for around $35.00 to $45.00 If they include
a few games and a cassette player.

Since yours is an all boxed system and would appear to be in
excellent condition, yours should go higher..

S&S,
And that's a shame. Only two years ago they went for $75-100 working. I
bought two w/o boxes and spent about $140 without any games. The nicer
one I owned had a capacitor melt-down. I repaired it but the ROM was
damaged. Altogether I'd say I spent almost $300 on Tomy Tutor stuff and
still don't have Frogger!

But I privately bought a TI-99/4 (no a) in the box for $75 and was
offered $150 just for the box! And you don't want to know what I've been
offered (& refused) for the Aquarius 32K RAM from Australia that I
bought on eBay for $11.00. Then there's my early ROM (white on black
screen) Panasonic JR200 (no U) that I got cheap...

Of course the way things are going right now I may soon be selling all
my classic computer equipment. Times change eh?

Davey,

Nice to hear from you. Yes, prices have fallen a great deal in the
last couple of years. I blame it on the recession and 9-11. Even I
have stopped buying as much as I used to. I think everybody is
being cautious now. I too have contemplated selling a few items in
my collection..

Oh, I can imagine what you have been offered for that 32k
cartridge! I still have one myself.. My boxed one got sold long
ago..

Send me a private email sometime.

Updates have (finally) been completed to the Little Orphan Tomy Tutor page.
It's been a long time in coming, but I think you'll all find it worth the
wait. :)

The URL: http://www.floodgap.com/retrobits/tomy/

Updates this time around:
* A completely new and separate section for the Tomy Pyuuta series, with
complete photographs of the inside and out of the rare Japanese Pyuuta and
the even rarer Pyuuta Mk II, and screen shots and manual scans where
available. (Pyuuta Jr. section coming soon when I land one of them. ^^)
* Redone photographs of the main unit and motherboard, including how to take
apart the unit and identify major components, as well as new photographs
of packaging, ad copy and peripherals.
* Additional screenshots and cartridges in the Incomplete Catalogue, including
   the "3-D" series.
* GPL LIVES! Raphael Nabet provides new information that an unusual variant
of GPL does indeed lurk within the Tomy (rats!) on the TI vs. Tomy section,
and also contributes large amounts of information to update the Memory Map.
* Hardware page updated with new information about Tutor hardware mappings
   and ROM banking strategies.
* Various custodial updates.

Please let me know about any questions or inaccuracies. Have fun!

Score one for obscurity -- bought a Tutor with joy controllers, Scramble
(boxed no instructions) and Hyperspace in its (thrashed) original box for
$15 from a consignment sale. No one knew what it was, how much it was
actually worth (I tried very hard not to snicker), or if it was tested.
Dragged it into the apartment, placed it on the test bench and she fires
right up. w00t.

While I'm keeping the machine itself as a spare unit (it's a little yellowed
but otherwise in reasonable condition), I already have Scramble boxed, and
I already have Hyperspace loose. So, I'm offering them up as trade bait.
Just as clarification -- this is a loose Hyperspace cartridge (no box, no
instructions), and a Scramble cartridge in its original box in good condition
(a box crease), but no instructions. Both cartridges are fully tested and
work (in fact, I used them to test out the new addition to the family).

Things I'm looking for are a Torpedo Terror, Demon Diggers, Bombardier or
Triple Threat cartridge (loose *or* boxed), or box and instructions (I don't
need the cartridge) for Hyperspace or Jungler. Willing to do trade + cash as
well if you want. Replies off-list, please.

SUMMARY:

The Copyright Office seeks to examine the issues raised by “orphan works,”
i.e., copyrighted works whose owners are difficult or even impossible to
locate. Concerns have been raised that the uncertainty surrounding ownership
of such works might needlessly discourage subsequent creators and users from
incorporating such works in new creative efforts or making such works
available to the public. This notice requests written comments from all
interested parties. Specifically, the Office is seeking comments on whether
there are compelling concerns raised by orphan works that merit a
legislative, regulatory or other solution, and what type of solution could
effectively address these concerns without conflicting with the legitimate
interests of authors and right holders. ....

1. If by electronic mail: Send to orphanworks@... a message containing
the name of the person making the submission, his or her title and
organization (if the submission is on behalf of an organization), mailing
address, telephone number, telefax number (if any) and e-mail address. The
message should also identify the document clearly as either a comment or
reply comment. The document itself must be sent as a MIME attachment, and
must be in a single file in either: (1) Adobe Portable Document File (PDF)
format (preferred); (2) Microsoft Word 2000 or earlier; (3) WordPerfect 8.0
or earlier; (4) Rich Text File (RTF) format; or (5) ASCII text file format.

Yeah, I saw that -- I got a lot of referrers on my page from it. I wonder
why they used the InfoPyuta emulator, though, when MESS's Tomy Tutor driver
probably would work. (Dunno, never dumped the ROMs in my Pyuuta to find out.)

Hi,

Just yesterday I got a Pyuuta Jr. It works, but it didn't come with a

I am *told* but have not been able to confirm that the Tomy Tutor uses
the TI 99/4A pinout. However, I do not have any TI joysticks to test it
with. It is definitely not the same as the Atari/Commodore joysticks.

You cannot and they are. There are some ports of Tutor games to the Myarc
9640, but those required some tweaking and did not run directly.

Where did you find your Pyuuta Jr? I have a Pyuuta and a Pyuuta Mk II, but
I've been trying very hard to land a Jr without success. It's the last system
I'm missing in my Tomy collection (I have several Tomy Tutors, of course).

I've got a couple TI-99 joysticks floating around, I'll try them out
with the Pyuuta Jr. tonight. However, as of right now I don't have
any games for the thing (In a few weeks I'll have Scramble and
Frogger). The Pyuuta Jr. does have a built in painting program of
some sort, though, so I'll try to test the joysticks with that.

I picked it up on Yahoo Auctions Japan. I forget how much I paid for
it, but it wasn't much. Around 1000 yen ($10). After shipping fees
and surcharges it probably cost me less than $50, although I used
cheap shipping so it took 2 months to reach the US. But it didn't
come with anything but the unit itself and the power cable. No box
or games or joypads. I think it was sold as untested, too, but it
seems to work at least with the built in software. It only outputs
RF, so to get the picture on a US Television you need to set the
Pyuuta Jr. to channel 2 but turn your TV to channel 95 or 96.

I didn't realize you could do that; I had to use my Pyuuta Mk II (which is
also RF only) with my Mac's TV tuner card set to Japanese frequencies. I'll
try your method and see how well it works. It might also work for my
Commodore Ultimax, but I don't remember if it tunes to channel 2.

Fortunate that the Pyuuta has composite output. By the way, any chance of
seeing the internals of the Pyuuta Jr? I'd like to see how the ROMs are
laid out. Does it only allow GRAPHIC, or does it have BASIC (I can't imagine
how, but ...) Is there any GBASIC support?

It's worth a shot, but it depends on the system and it depends on
the TV. I've had success with a few Japanese systems like the Pyuuta
Jr., Cassette Vision, and Super Cassette Vision. All of those work
on channels 95 or 96. But my Famicom won't work on any channel for
some reason, and I ended up having to mod it to output composite.

Also, for reference: The Pyuuta Jr. appears to run fine off US
power. Japanese stuff tends to run a bit hot on our power, but I've
yet to have any problems with power supplies blowing out or
anything. And I've tried with quite a few Japanese systems, like the
X68000 and FM Towns and X1 and MSX and so on. I've been running my
MSX off US power for over a year now and it still works fine and
dandy.

Sure, will do. I intend to take it apart to look at the joystick
ports anyways.

Does it only allow GRAPHIC, or does it have BASIC (I can't imagine
> how, but ...) Is there any GBASIC support?

I'll check again tonight, but I'm pretty sure the only option is
GRAPHIC. Speaking of which, do you know if graphic can be controlled
via joystick?

And speaking of joysticks, now that I think about it I'm pretty sure
the TI-99/4a joysticks aren't completely compatible with the Pyuuta,
because the TI-99 sticks only have one button rather than two.
Perhaps it does work but with just one button, but I'm going to do a
little more research on it before I plug the TI-99 sticks in. I
don't want to burn the port out or anything, so I'm going to at
least ensure that the ground pins are in the same place.

Were these all tunable to 2/3, or 3/4?

I'm too antsy to do that with my Japanese systems, though, especially
since they were imported at considerable cost. The $30 I spent for a fuse
protected 100<->117 transformer at Fry's seemed very inexpensive insurance.
I'm also not sure what this would do to the power supplies long term running
them at USA mains voltage.

That would be fabulous. Pictures would be excellent.

Good point, I'd forgotten about that. You can control GRAPHIC mode with
the joystick, although the keyboard is needed to switch modes and select
colours. I don't know how the Pyuuta does it, but it's probably done with
the console buttons. I'd like to hear what you discover.

I think they were 2/3, but I'll have to check. The Cassettevision's
have tiny little trimpots recessed into the bottom of the case that
lets you fine tune the video signal, which is helpful if you get a
fuzzy picture.

Eventually I'll probably go the same route, but I'd probably have to
buy a couple since I've got systems in different places throughout
my house. Plus, several of the Japanese systems I have use external
power supplies, which would be trivial to replace if they died.

I'll let you know what I discover, but I can't really compare the
Pyuuta Jr.'s operation to a normal Tomy Tutor or Pyuuta because I've
never used either before.

LOL, some years back my big brother measured our AC voltage, and found
that it was 95 volts AC. I'm sure that it's been upgraded and improved
since then... but you never know without testing.

On the other hand, my NEC Trek runs hot, very VERY hot -- I never work
it without a fan to blow air onto it.

I'd probably be hesitant about using something as old and rare as a
NEC Trek without proper power. My NEC PC-8801 seems to like US power
just fine, though, and those things are a dime a dozen to replace
anyways. The only one I'm really worried about is my Sharp X68000
since those are notorious for having bad power supplies in the first
place. I'm lucky mine works at all, and running it off US power would
just be tempting fate. Plus I use it nearly every day, whereas most of
my other old Japanese stuff (other than the MSX) only gets pulled out
every once in awhile. I also noticed my FM Towns Marty heats up quite
a bit, you can feel it even through the plastic case.

Well, I just tried the TI-99 joysticks with the Pyuuta Jr, and they
don't appear to work at all. I'm pretty sure the joysticks work, but I
suppose it's possible the joyport on the Pyuuta is bad considering what
I paid for it. Or maybe the joystick doesn't work with the Jr version
of Graphic.

I should have several Pyuuta games coming my way within the next few
weeks, so I'll be able to test the joystick thing for sure when they
arrive. Here's the games I'm getting:

Scramble
Frogger
Bermuda Triangle
Don Pan
Jungler
Triple Command
Mystery Gold
Mission Attack
Monster Inn

All Japanese versions. And there's one more that's missing a label,
so who knows what it'll turn out to be.
