Sorry, didn't mean to help increase your exasperation.

Actually, yes, it's a simply matter to find out everything
there is to know about the DirectX installed on one's
machine ... assuming, that is, that Parallels on Mac
works exactly like regular Windows XP.

Simply click on the "start" button and click on the
"Run..." link on your start menu. It should be the last
entry on the right-hand side of the main menu. It will
open a small dialog box with a text-box entry area.
Type in "dxdiag" (without the quotes), then the "OK"
button, and that will open another larger dialog box
with several tabs.

On the first tab, at the bottom, your exact version
of DirectX will be listed. On the machine i'm typing
from right now, which runs Tonescape fine, my info is:
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

There's another tab which lists all of the DirectX Files.
If you click the "Save All Information..." button it
will save a text file of everything on this dialog box
(but it's not necessary -- you can just look at the info
by clicking the tab). Here is the complete list of
DirectX files on my machine:

(I've left out the "language" and "attributes" columns,
since they were all the same -- English and "Final Retail"
respectively -- in the interests of trying to keep each
entry on a single line. I also know that the Yahoo website
is going to make it look ugly, sorry)
