Hi Monz,
I just found out about tonescape and it looks like its just what I've been
looking for for a long time.
Only problem is that it doesn't start up.
I am using XP, followed the instructions (updating etc.) but it stops after
showing the initial picture of a starshape lattice(?).
My DirectX vesion is the same as your version.
Do you have any advice for me?
Niels

hi everyone,
Just wanted to post a message here concerning running
Tonescape in Windows Vista.
The good news is that Tonescape is working fine
on my newest laptop (Toshiba Satellite A215-S5850)
in Windows Vista Home Premium. And it looks more
beautiful than ever!
But i have tried to install Tonescape on several
Vista machines for other people and have had problems.
It always installs fine, but then crashes when
trying to run. But installing it onto my own Vista
machine, Tonescape worked perfectly right "out of the box".
Most of the problems with Tonescape are because of
compatibility issues between different versions of
Microsoft's DirectX. But getting a Windows Update
in Vista can also actually break a working Tonescape
installation, as happened to me.
I brought my Toshiba laptop to the September MusicByComputers
meeting, and Tonescape mysteriously crashed on
trying to open it.
I say mysteriously because i have 4 (yep, four)
different linux distros on this machine and i use two
of them all the time, and never use Windows for
anything except Tonescape. I actually had not booted
into Windows since showing some things in Tonescape
at the August meeting.
I suspected that Vista had gotten an automatic update
which broke Tonescape, and apparently i was right.
After trying to uninstall and reinstall Tonescape
several times with different configurations and no success,
i finally decided that the only solution was to reinstall
a fresh factory version of Vista.
Luckily i didn't have to do that, because when i put
in the CD it asked me if i wanted to roll back to a
previous version of Vista, and Vista apparently keeps
a database of each change that is made to the system,
BACK TO A CERTAIN POINT.
The earliest version that i had available was from
August 31 2008, just before a Windows update. Then only
a few days after that the changes made were that i had
removed Tonescape, then the next one after that was the
new install of Tonescape.
So apparently the database goes back about 6 months,
and i was very lucky that there was still a version of
Vista in which Tonescape worked. So i was able to keep
all the settings and software i had on August 31 -- which,
since i haven't used Vista at all since then, means everything
-- and get Tonescape working again.
The caveat is that as soon as i restored to that version
of Vista, i turned off automatic Windows updates, which
means that i shouldn't go online with Vista anymore. So i
also turned off the automatic wireless.
So as long as i keep that version of Vista exactly as it is,
Tonescape will be working fine for me on the Toshiba.
I can show it off again at the March meeting.

Hi Oz,
I've sent them to your ozanyarman.com email.

Dear monz,
Thank you for your support. I followed your advice and ran dxdiag. My
DirectX is the same as your version. However, it seems that d3d8.dll
and d3d9.dll are not up to date. I tried a complete reinstallation of
a new download to no avail. These files simply won't update. There are
exclamation marks next to them with a warning saying that they are old
versions. Can you send me your version of these files and tell me
exactly where to copy them?
Cordially,
Oz.

Oh, i forgot to say: if viewing on the Yahoo website, click
the "Option" and then "Use Fixed Width Font" links to make
it look neat.

Tonescape microtonal music software
Monz, if my understanding is correct, different Direct X 9.0c versions
arise from SDK updates occuring every 2-3 months. Do you or Chris not
know which exact DirectX package works with Tonescape? It shouldn't be
too difficult to look up the version number on your computer. Were you
not anxious for me to try Tonescape? You are not making this easy for
me at all. Here I am finally ready to try it, and you send me fishing
software on microhorror's junkyard webpage. The least you could do is
send me the link to the DirectX version that you yourself use. Without
your assistance, I will surely drop the whole matter in exasparation.
Oz.

It's not so simple. If you read this blog and the comments
which follow it, you'll get an idea of how f***ed-up this
whole DirectX mess is:
http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000663.html
Chris is very busy now and as i said, we are at the present
time not able to officially offer tech support.
It seems that the only way you can hope to get Tonescape
working is to download and install every available version
of "DirectX 9.0c" from the Microsoft website. Try fishing
around here:

Thank you for all this information monz. It appears that the problem
is related to the MDX and the correct DirectX version. I believe I am
close to making Tonescape work. I just need the two components above.
Oz.

Dear monz,
I have installed the Microsoft .net 1.1 service pack 1, but still no
luck. Where do I download Managed DirectX API v.9.2 or above? And
which exact version of DirectX do I need? Can Chris help me?
Cordially,

Please be aware that Windows ME and Windows XP are
vastly different operating systems.
Microsoft originally created Windows as an application
that ran on top of DOS. With Windows 95 things changed
a bit: the user could still boot into DOS if needed,
but the OS was designed to boot directly into Windows,
and most users of Windows 95/98/ME never used DOS at all.
Members of the DOS-based Windows family, in chronological
order, were:
1985 Windows 1.0 (the very first Microsoft Windows)
1987 Windows 2.0
1992 Windows 3.1
1995 Windows 95 (i.e., 4.0)
1998 Windows 98 (i.e., 4.1)
2000 Windows ME (i.e., 4.9)
see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_9x
The NT family uses an entirely different kernel, and
was a fork off of Microsoft's work with IBM on OS/2,
which it was hoping would supplant DOS. Important
members of the NT family are:
1993 Windows NT 3.1 (the original NT OS)
1996 Windows NT 4.0
2000 Windows 2000 (i.e., NT 5.0)
2001 Windows XP (i.e., NT 5.1)
2007 Windows Vista (i.e., NT 6.0)
Microsoft used version number 3.1 for the original NT
to match it with the contemporary DOS-based Windows 3.1.
As you can see from the version number 5.0, Windows 2000
was the real successor to Windows 98 -- Microsoft
never intended to release another DOS-based Windows
after 98, and ME was only a sort of temporary fill-in.
Many users (including me) never thought it was very good.
Windows 2000 was intended for the business community,
and XP was the version of NT designed for home use.
It has proved to be wildly successful, and in fact
is still much more widely used than Vista.

What i really intend to do here is to incorporate some
other optional video modes, which require lesser hardware.
We designed Tonescape to look really good, and it seems
that it is that which is causing all of the problems.
As i said before, the problems are almost always due
to incompatible versions of DirectX. DirectX 9.0c
is the one you need, but there are other minor
version numbers after that, and if you don't have
exactly the one we had when we created Tonescape,
it won't work. I do intend to do something about this,
but for now, that's the situation.

Dear monz,
After installing DirectX 9.0c and .Net Framework 1.1, I can see a
lattice window when trying to start Tonescape, but the program still
gives an error afterwards and crashes. Something is missing, but what?
I think my Macbook Pro's video card is terrific. It is a NVIDIA
GeForce 8600 GT PCIe card with 512 MB of VRAM. My Guest OS is Windows
XP 2002 Service Pack 3. I even enabled DirectX shaders for Parallels
Desktop VM. If only we had a clue what is lacking to make Tonescape
work... I am currently migrating everything else from my old computer
to my Mac. Nothing has caused any problem so far. All the other
programs that worked in Windows ME work under the guest OS on my Mac
smoothly. Since installing the two components above improved the
situation, we seem to be on the right track. I shouldn't be required
to use another laptop for Tonescape if we can just isolate the problem.
Can you give a list of all the hardware and software requirements to
assure smooth running of Tonescape on your system? Maybe we can locate
the crucial element that Tonescape needs to work.
Oz.

We have never tested Tonescape on any kind of Mac, however,
i have tried to install Tonescape onto several different
virtual machines and have never had any success. It seems
to be too tightly tied in to the necessary Microsoft technology
to allow it to work under a virtual environment ... at least
with current hardware availability.
I have Tonescape running fine on a desktop Windows XP machine.
Trying to install it to a virtual Windows XP running on
top of that didn't work. On the same computer, i also tried
installing it under Wine in a virtual Ubuntu Linux, and that
also didn't work.
I also have Tonescape running beautifully on Windows Vista SP1
laptop. Trying to install it to a virtual Windows XP running
on top of that machine also didn't work.
You should note that many people have had problems even
trying to install it directly onto a real Windows XP or
Vista machine, and those are the only two operating systems
on which it *will* work.
I don't know why so many people have problems with it,
because it's always worked fine on any computer i have
which has the required hardware. You *do* need to have
a good video card, .Net Framework 1.1, and DirectX 9.0c.
The biggest problems come from Microsoft constantly
changing DirectX and not keeping it entirely compatible
with previous versions. Even if you have 9.0c, it may
not be the exact version number needed to run Tonescape.
Unfortunately the project has been dormant since 2006 and
we are presently unable to offer tech support. We do plan
to, at some point, port the graphics engine over to OpenGL,
to avoid the DirectX problems.
In some cases it will install just fine, but if your
video card is not good enough, there will be a warning
during installation that "Your video card may cause
the program to run slowly" (or something to that effect),
and in fact what will happen is the program will run OK
except that it will not display the Lattice -- the Lattice
window will be completely blank. Of course, the Lattice
is the whole point of Tonescape. But at least you will
have the Pitch-Height (i.e., score) window working OK,
and playing the piece will give both the audio, and the
video updating of the Pitch-Height window.
My advice, if you really want to use Tonescape, is to
use a real XP or Vista machine with all of the Microsoft
updates installed.
I just purchased my super-hot Vista laptop brand-new
about a month ago for only US $600. So the price of
the necessary hardware is coming way down. In this
country (USA) you can get a capable Windows XP laptop
for around $150-200.

Hi I'm new in all this matter of Just Intonation, I've been studying it

The installation went good, do I need to set up anything else???

I'm sorry that you're still having problems.
Unfortunately, several people who have tried Tonescape
have reported problems with DirectX. The problem there
is that Microsoft keeps changing it, and newer versions
are not always totally backwards-compatible with
older versions. We are currently hoping to get some
help from programmers to help us port the graphics engine
from DirectX to OpenGL.
The other problem you report is also unfortunately
rather common. Tonescape relies on very advanced 3-D
graphics, and if your video card isn't up to the task
you'll have trouble. I myself cannot run Tonescape on
my laptop because the video card is too outdated and/or
not powerful enough.

Thanks for your reply.
I (re?)did the installations you adviced me.
Then, I reinstalled Tonescape from scratch.
I still get error messages. First during the installation I get the
message:
"Your video adapter may cause the application to run slowly"
Then, i get plenty of error messages and Tonescape crashes due to
DirectX related issues...
Thanks for helping me, I really would like to use Tonescape. I read
something about the incompatibility with Dell video cards...

Your system needs to have Windows updates installed as
of the date of the Den Haag release, which was January 28
of this year. You need to be using IE as your browser,
and go to
http://www.update.microsoft.com/
There are additional installation notes on our website,
http://tonalsoft.com/support/tonescape/install.aspx
However, note that the information pertaining to activation
is now out-of-date, as the Den Haag version has been released
to the public fully activated.
I quote this from that webpage:
>> VERY IMPORTANT! After the installation is complete,
>> before running Tonescape® for the first time, be certain
>> that you have Microsoft .Net 1.1 Service Pack 1 installed.
>> Tonescape® will generate various errors if Service Pack 1

>> the Windows Update command that's built right into the
>> Windows start menu. When running Windows Update, ensure

After making sure that your Windows XP is fully updated,
try Tonescape again and let us know if there are still
problems.

Tonescape microtonal music software
Hello all,
I've made an interesting Tonescape file for one of my students
(he's learning the piece on the piano): an arrangement of the
March from Prokofiev's "Love for 3 Oranges".
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/tonescape_denhaag/files/pieces/prokofiev_love\
-for-3-oranges_march_699.99-ct-mt.tonescape
What makes it interesting is that i tuned it in a 31-tone
meantone whose generator-5th is 699.99 cents, so that it is
essentially a type of torsional 12-edo which allows all 31
common spellings in the meantone chain from Gbb to Ax,
and puts them all on the Lattice.
I suspect that for piano pieces of the "common-practice"
period and the 20th-century, i'll probably be using this
torsional 12-edo so that i can preserve the composer's
original spellings from now on, instead of true 12-edo.
Enjoy!

I finally got around to installing SP 2 on my old desktop system,
after clearing off some space, so I tried installing Tonescape to see
what would happen. I also get the warning about the graphics being
slow, and the lattice window doesn't show up. I have an Nvidia
GeForce2 MX. I used the Windows hardware wizard to look for updated
device drivers and installed them -- I probably should have gone
directly to Nvidia's web site and get the drivers from there but I'll
try that next. The Nvidia driver version is 6.14.10.4523.

Hmmm ... that's *very* much like a piece i started composing
a few weeks ago: a swing/bebop jazz piece in 13-edo. I set
up the Time Signature in Tonescape as "11/8: 3+3+3+2 as 6+5",
but my idea of how it feels is really a swing 4/4 which is
missing the final swing-8th, so that would make it 3+(2/3) / 4.

As long as i can use my spreadsheet, it's really not that
hard to set a Tonescape Time Signature. My idea was that
since we plan to eventually incorporate a real Time Signature
Editor, it made sense to put in the mental effort to figure
out the algorithm in my spreadsheet, and the added benefit
is that even before we get the Editor in there, it's fairly
easy for me to calculate any Time Signature accent pattern
that i can dream up.
Actually, the last work i did on Time Signatures before they
were implemented into Tonescape was quite systematic: i was
calculating every possible combination of accents for each
numerator ... but i only accomplished that for numerators
2 thru 11; after 11 i only put in ones that i had used in
compositions myself.

It's something that i've been wanting in a MIDI sequencer
for a long, long time ... along with easy input of microtonal
tunings, of course!
I might as well say it now: my goal in creating Tonescape
all along has been simply for *me* to have the music
composition software with all the bells and whistles
that *i* always wanted! And naturally, that makes it so
good that others are going to like it too. ;-)

Essentially one percussionist playing in 7+7+11 while another one plays
a different rhythm in 5+5+8 (with very slight changes in tempo so that
they both start at the same time). Another one of these bug temperament
sketches that I have (in a similarly early state of development) has a
meter of 4 + 2/3 beats per measure!

It wouldn't be worth the trouble for a rhythmic pattern that I'll
probably only use once. But if you had some kind of hand-editable file
for these (something that could be edited in Notepad), even if you don't
have a nice GUI for editing them inside Tonescape, I'd probably get some
use out of it. I just thought it was a pretty cool feature already to
have built-in preset rhythmic patterns more than just quantizing to the
nearest 16th note (as in a typical MIDI editor).

I'm pretty good at hearing complex meters, and can hear
the 7+7+11 in this in this short piece (which i really
like BTW -- sounds to me kind of like a steel-drum band
which got drunk *and* took speed! ;-) ). By "against",
do you mean some sort of tuplet configuration?
Anyway, our plan for Tonescape eventually is to have a
Time Signature editor dialog-box, which will allow you
to construct any kind of metrical pattern you want.
But with development stalled as it is right now, that's
certainly a long way off.
For now, we've simply supplied a long list of time-signatures:
(as usual with Windows, the ones from 10 to 19 should come
after 9 but instead are "alphabetized" to come after "1")
1: Neutral
10: 2+2+3+3 as 4+6

9: 2+3+2+2 as 5+4
9: 3+2+2+2 as 5+4
9: 3+3+3 Standard
9: Neutral
Even this is a far from exhaustive list, but it does
provide a good selection of built-in accent patterns,
especially considering how many users will probably
stick with "4: Rock", "4: Heavy 1", "6: 3+3 Standard",
etc. But i personally happen to really like crazy meters.

I actually created an Excel spreadsheet to figure out
the tempo and volume changes needed for these accent
patterns. Since the spreadsheet is already set up, it
would be easy to continue making the list longer ... but
as i said, it's not likely that the Time Signature features
of Tonescape are going to be updated any time soon.
However, if you (or anyone else) desires to use a particular
Time Signature which is not in Tonescape's built-in list,
simply let me know and i'll be able to set up a file for you
with that Time Signature included.

Nice! Will these be programmable? Could I set up a repeating pattern
with 2 bars of 7 against 5 followed by one bar of 11 against 8? :-)

I'd like to finish this someday, but the rhythms are so tedious to set
up by hand. (I actually used the Event List and a pocket calculator...)
But I don't suppose many composers will want to use this particular
rhythm....
