Hi Group - Aleks sent out a link a while ago to "Pink Martini" on
YouTube. I bought the CD "Sympathique" as a result and found it to be
quite entertaining. I tried to buy it on vinyl, but at that time, the
only album done by Pink Martini was their "Hey Eugene" offering. If
anyone is interested, the 180 gram vinyl is available for the
Sympathique album through "Elusive Disc". At $15.99 U.S., it's not a bad
price either. The record is identified on their website -

I am selling my Denon 5900 to make room for some new equipment. It is an
outstanding DVD player and an amazing CD/DVD-A/SACD player. Built like a tank.
Seriously it weighs a ton.

Below text has been exchacted by an article of 22 tips to obtain better sound in
a high end system.
If it may be to your interest, you may follow rest of the article by the link
below
regards

4- Finding the Correct Listening Distance; the sound is spread in waves called
frequency. The volume of every frequency will be different in connection with
the distance from the speakers. In terms of the volume, frequencies will be up
and down when the distance is changed. Especially higher mids and treble
sections will vary between 20-5 centimetres. Such frequency peaks can be easily
recognized by listening.
a - Listen a test CD containing different test frequencies. For instance start
with mono 1000 Hz at the listening chair. Then stand up and walk very slowly
through your system. (Preferably with your eyes closed). You will immediately
realize that the signal will have ups and downs in volume while you are moving
as if somebody was turning on and off the volume control.
b - The main frequency of the music and the one which is closest to human sound
is 1000 Hz. 1000 Hz is your starting point. 1000 Hz will be at its peaks so many
times in connection with the distance of your listening chair. Find the closest
distance to your current listening chair that the 1000 Hz is at peak. The ups
and downs in that band should be changed around 50-70 centimetres. This is the
best location to hear the middle frequencies but it is not the best location yet
to achieve the best frequency spectrum. It is just the starting point.
c - Stick a rope to back wall that may come through your shoulders. Now close
your eyes and listen different frequencies such as 300-500-1000-2000-5000-10.000
Hz etc, move top of your body (while sitting) forward and backwards. Mark the
peak points of every frequency you listened on the rope. Our aim is to find a
particular point that most of the frequencies are at their peaks. If you are not
successful and these points are not closer each other, move your speakers 10
centimetres to front (or your listening chair to 10 centimetre front or rear)
and repeat the same exercises till you find a certain point that most of the
frequencies are at their peaks.
It is not an easy task, time consuming but free of charge. Once you have the
point, you will be very surprised with the improvement of the sound of your
existing system.

Yes, I finally managed to get there as well. It does look interesting
and a wonder that this has never been thought of long before. I guess
it's what they used to call "horizontal thinking". I will give it a try
as well.

Ken.

I've used this trick for subwoofer placement. It was handy for identifying where
the dips and peaks were in my room's bass response. I haven't tried it for
speakers, but I'm not sure how well it would work for my system. My two way
monitors are designed to work best with a reflective surface behind them.
Placing a speaker in the listening position would change their tonal balance a
lot. I guess it really depends on what kind of speakers you are using.

The rule I've always stuck with is to never have the same distance from the
speaker's cones to the back wall and side wall, since the same frequencies will
be reinforced in both directions. My system is in a huge open concept space
these days, so I use lots of toe-in to minimize room interactions (with very
good results, I should add!)

hope this helps,
Matt

Andre, my suggestion would be to go to their site and start with streaming
the live album. There are some pretty definitive versions of several songs
on it - offhand I'd say Misunderstood, The Late Greats, Hell Is Chrome,
Comment (this is a cover), and also One By One, and Airline To Heaven.
These last two are Woody Guthrie poems that Wilco and Billy Bragg set to
music in the late 90's, but these live versions are extra wonderful. Also
the sound quality on this live record is very good- tho it's the only one
that has never come out on vinyl sadly.

Wilco has won a few Grammys...and are still humble enough that they served
as openers for Neil Young on a good chunk of his tour here last fall. So
while I may have drunk-posted like a jerk on Sat.night, I know I'm not the
only jerk who enjoys the hell out of this group. :)

Btw, the tickets are now sold to a t-a member. Thanks for the bw. I will
try to shut up about Wilco now.

Further to what Noam said, the band Wilco, like all good things that have nuance
and endurance, takes a while for you to get into them, but once it clicks, you
really appreciate their artistry and brilliance. Also they're the type of band
that you won't get tired of with repeated listenings either. YHF does have some
self indulgent moments, but its generally recognized as being a landmark album.

hey music lovers, (anyone still out there??)

I have a pair of tickets for the first of the two sold out Massey shows. Not the
best seats but there aren't really any bad seats at that venue. Thought I'd
offer them here before putting them on CL. I need $100 all in for the pair,
which is about $20 below what they cost. I'm going to the second show instead.

If you haven't seen the 2004-2009 incarnation of this band play live, you ain't
lived. If you don't know the band in question, I just pity you.

cheers,

Bonjour Andre, I hope you're doing well. I only said I pity the people that
haven't ever heard of this band, and that's largely because while they've
released 7 studio albums (all on vinyl as well btw) and been around more
than 15 years, outside of favourable markets like Chicago they have only
finally received broad commercial radio exposure in the last 2-3 years -
thanks to the niche stations on Sirius and XM, and thanks to more agressive
campaigning by their manager. Anyways...YHF and Summerteeth were probably
their peak of creativity, but if you didn't care for it that's no big deal.
Some of their other stuff is more accessible, though the one A Ghost Is Born
has even less mass appeal. YHF did have a lot of hype partly because it was
their breakthrough release and partly because of the background story with
their label and the other tensions during its' making, these are well
documented in the Greg Kot book and the documentary film by Sam Jones.

I liked this band since the first Woody Guthrie record, but I didn't really
realize what else they were doing until several years later. Now I've seen
them play a bunch of times, they put on a fantastic show. The group now
includes two musicians who are considered to be world-class in the avant
garde of pop/jazz (Nels Cline and Glenn Kotche). Also FYI, the band streams
all of their music in pretty good sound quality on their web site, and
there's also an iPhone app that is pretty much a smartphone-friendly version
of their site.

cheers,
Noam

I have a pair of tickets for the first of the two sold out Massey shows. Not the
best seats but there aren't really any bad seats at that venue. Thought I'd
offer them here before putting them on CL. I need $100 all in for the pair,

I have a few pieces of working equipment in need of some minor
restoration/repair work

RECEIVERS

MARANTZ 2270
MARANTZ 2225
SANSUI 881
PIONEER SX-770

I had used a local fellow before who was recommended by a few in this
Group but I cannot get a hold of him and he prefers dealing with tube
equipment and does not do TTs or align tuners in receivers.

TURNTABLES

ROTEL RP-850
DUAL 1229 (currently at ALL IN ONE for repairs but the cost is pretty
high so I am looking for other sources if anyone knows of a local
person)
TECHNICS SL1700 MK II

TOSHIBA SR-340 (Japanese and very little on-line info)
REGA Planar 3 with RB300
DUAL 506

Other than the Dual they need new belts, lubrication and new cartridge
or stylus for the most part.
My youngest son broke the needle off each cartridge (including a Grace
Ruby F9E)

As a result of repair costs and space, I am going to sell the DUAL 506,
REGA and TOSHIBA.

Can anyone recommend an experienced reasonable repair person for the
Receivers and TTs as well as cartridge advice for the tables I will
keep?

Thx

I have been transfering to CD-Rs 14-16 inch old broadcast transcription discs (I
play them on my variable speed Lenco Turntable: B-61,or is it a 55?
Thick, old, heavy tone arm. Currently using Shure Lp Styli+Cartridge N-75-ED.
Thought of looking for something older, heavier tracking. Ted Syperek of Ring
Audio is my dealer. He's very good, usually able to get what I need from old
stock. If I wanted an older Shure cartridge and Styli, what would
be a good choice? I want something sturdy,of good quality,is there a difference
in the LP Styli and Cartridges between the Shure N-75-ED,Shure N-55, N-70-B,
N-44? I tried a Shure N-97,+ N-91-did not work too well for me. For 78s,I
like to use either Shure N-44, an N-75-ED, an N-70-B, or preferably a Stanton
500 or 683 series. Tried Ortofon for both 78s+LPs-I
wasn't happy with the results. Had borrowed a "Hush" but the sound of
many 78s sounded dead, hollow. Still using my Fisher Tube Preamp 400-C. Just
had it repaired. Works fine. Is it worth my while and expense to have
either a tape switch or a Vertical/Lateral switch installed in the Fisher?

I think my headphone amp may be a little weak.

Your other points are very illuminating for me and I'm going to follow up on
your leads.

Thanks very much! I think I'm on my way to knowing a bit more about the digital
audio game.

If you're using a headphone amp, you shouldn't be having problems
with things like impedance or gain, or frequency response.
Really, it's just a question of quality. A Macbook is marketed as
a multimedia machine, but it's not audiophile grade by my terms.
The components and design of the sound card in a laptop or any
consumer-grade sound card are chosen to meet a price point which
will satisfy most people. By definition, everyone on this list
has a much higher set of standards on the bell curve; we're
probably the pickiest 1% of consumers. So increasing the product
cost to satisfy us is economically infeasible for a computer
manufacturer. I'm surprised at the lack of true audiophile
portable music players, however, but I haven't researched
recently. I should add, however, that some computer-based pro
musician's gear definitely achieves quality that should be of
interest to audiophiles, particularly as commonly available DAC
chips improve, and the pricing for pro-gear is much more
competitive than audiophile stuff. This is because there is a
large demographic of musicians with average or below average
disposable income, so the sales are higher with smaller margins.

If you want to really improve the sound quality from your
computer, look into an external DAC and be sure to feed it
lossless audio. Some DACs have headphone amps built in, and can
be had for less than what I'd expect to pay for a decent CD
player.
Here are where the headphone enthusiasts are, and of course
there's lots of discussion about portable audio and DACs and
portable music players etc.
http://www.head-fi.org/

This is where the digital audio enthusiasts are. This is focusing
more on software, encoding, digital music production etc. Here's
the FAQs:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7516
I highly recommend that everyone should know about EAC, a program
which extracts music properly from a CD for your portable usage.
It's linked from the FAQs above.

Cheers,
Anthony

What are the thoughts on this? I guess I'm looking for things
like impedance, amplification, Hz and such.

I have a Macbook. And I have very new AKG 701 headphones along with a headphone
amp. And I guess the combo is ok. But I can't help but feel that the Macbook
is limiting my auditory experience in some physics-explicable way.

What are the thoughts on this? I guess I'm looking for things like impedance,

Below is a link to a composite audio/video of a
song whereby additional tracks were
laid in by different singers and musicians from different places around
the world.  The finished product is tremendous!

The song itself is the classic  "Stand By Me" originally released in 1955 by
The Staple Singers and released again in 1961 by the Drifters. Not to mention Ben
E King

A great reminder of why we got into this industry, and the power of music for
change.
