Hi,

Are there any specializations for software engineering artefacts such
as use-cases? Not required to be exactly UML, but similar formats
would be useful.

Via wiki templates it is clear you can ensure the consistency
required, but I am looking for a way to ensure use case authors always
structure their use cases or other partial artefacts in a consistent,
re-usable way.

Regards... Matthew

Topic

Juniper Networks has focused on an topic-based documentation and publishing approach for their product documentation for the past 5+ years. Come explore their journey as they began as a vision for "operation efficiency" by migrating from Frame Maker to xml, to a vision that offers a "business value proposition" with topics by offering services to customers to create dynamic content. This presentation will provide an opportunity to learn about our experiences and give you some valuable tips on how to leverage a topic-based approach.

About the Speaker

Rajal Shah is the Director of Document Engineering in the Foundation Technologies group at Juniper Networks. FT is the corporate R&D Group at Juniper Networks. His group is responsible for facilitating and promoting a unified documentation and publishing approach across all five business groups at Juniper.

I thought that this might be of interest as it's DITA focused and there's been a lot of interest online, on many of the DITA mailing lists, and elsewhere about integrating DITA and Wiki.

"IBM DITA Wiki--One year retrospective"
Presented by Don Day, IBM

Date: Saturday, 26 September 2009, 9:00-10:30 AM Pacific/US

Topic

The IBM DITA Wiki is an internal application created originally to demonstrate the feasibility of using native DITA in a collaborative authoring tool. It is positioned today as a key means for capturing the writings of Subject Matter Experts within the company in the reusable, easily repurposed DITA format.

The wiki is now a hosted service within IBM that enables contributors whose jobs are NOT technical writing to move their content development into the DITA standard. The collaboration aspect in particular has appealed to programming and education teams, and we are exploring the wiki's suitability for other domains as well, such as engineering and support professionals.

This presentation will provide some background on DITA and this project's history before delving into some of the experiences and successes of various user communities to date.

About the Speaker

Don Day is an advisory software engineer for IBM. For the past 15 years, he has designed and supported publishing tools for IBM's Information Development community. Don provides XML expertise for Information Design and Development in IBM's e-business Operating Systems Solutions area and for IBM Corporate User Technology. He has represented IBM on the W3C XSL Working Group and is presently IBM's alternate rep for the W3C CSS Working Group. Don holds a dual-major Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Journalism and a Master of Arts degree in Technical and Professional Communication (with a minor in Computer Science) from New Mexico State University.

Topic

IBM’s long standing commitment to our clients is to deliver the right content to the right person at the right time and in the right place. To that end, IBM has embarked on a multi-year development initiative to create an end-to-end life cycle information management system. The system, known internally as IDCMS Blue, is intended to integrate and automate IBM Information Development processes and tools.

A significant element of IDCMS-Blue is information quality management.  Information quality management begins with information architecture  and extends through content authoring, editorial review, defect management, customer collaboration and feedback, and a variety of information usage statistics that when combined,  form the IBM quality management strategy based on structured authoring with DITA, Arbortext Editor, Acrolinx IQ, IBM Task Modeler and the IBM Eclipse Help System.

About the Speaker

Mike Iantosca is the corporate product development team (PDT) lead for IBM DITA Authoring Tools and Content Management Systems for IBM Information Development worldwide.  A founding member of the team that ushered in the era of SGML and XML/DITA in IBM Information Development, Mr. Iantosca has served multiple roles including systems analyst, architect, senior advisor, project, and product manager. Mr. Iantosca led the worldwide conversion of millions of pages of IBM product documentation to structured formats and has served in additional roles in IBM Information Development as a writer, instructor, developer, tester, and evangelist of structured document solutions in IBM for more than 25 years.  He is also a former executive board member of AUGI.

I am interested. There is lots of support on user lists, but sometimes I feel I would like to just talk about problems and ideas. For example:
- The basic problem of 'easily' rendering DITA is still not solved, as far as I can see.
- There are some fundamental usage issues that I still don't get.
- I still find organizing DITA information difficult.

I would like to discuss these sorts of things. Not just how others solve problems with available tools but also how they would rather do it if they could have better tools. I find discussions on lists clumsy. Meetings can be very encouraging.

I would also prefer to meet downtown Toronto.

I know the admin for the group is on leave at the moment, and it looks like we're building up some spam members.

So some pertinent questions:
- is there still interest in having this group? or are people getting enough support and contact around DITA through other channels (like the main dita-user list)?
- if there is still interest, what level? meetings with scheduled presenters, or more informal/social?
- and do you have a location preference? eg downtown TO vs Markham?

If there are presenters, I can plan to come to town, so yes, I'd be interested in that. Or maybe we could have a panel - I'm willing to moderate. Downtown is fine with me as I stay near the subway when I come to town, but I can also do Markham.

I would be interested in meetings with presentations, depending on the
subject.

As for the location, the IBM Lab might as well be on the dark side of the
moon, as far as getting home by transit after 9:00 p.m. Downtown, or
somewhere on the subway system would be preferable.

Want to know why structured, topic-based authoring is the technical communication solution of the future? Been asking what DITA is really all about? Want to know if it's the right direction for your organization? Confused about how to get started? The JoAnn Hackos Workshop Series invites you to a weeklong intensive DITA Boot Camp in Quebec City, Canada September 29-October 3, 2008.

DITA Boot Camp will cover the concepts needed to move to DITA successfully. This workshop has combined four of JoAnn Hackos's workshops, Minimalism, Structured Writing, XML and DITA to give attendees a strong foundation for topic-based authoring.

Managers, this is a great opportunity to get your staff expertly and efficiently trained to implement DITA in one all-inclusive workshop. There's more to using DITA correctly than just the DTD. Your staff will learn what they need to know at DITA Boot Camp!

Sorry to hear that.

Look on the good side though - it gets you out of snow shovelling for the
next couple of months.

Hope you have a good recovery.

Unfortunately I will have to cancel this mtg as I fell on the ice this
weekend and broke my wrist, and will not be in the office to host the
meeting.

I will likely reschedule Michael's presentation sometime in the New Year.

Thanks!
